STEP 3 PREPERATION 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A very good book to review for step 3. Its not enough by its self but a very good complement to other books like Swanson Family Medicine.

not very helpful despite good potential 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Basically, it is very skeletal review with too little detail and too many missing topics. It does overall good job to address some (yes, only some of the vast amount of step 3 facts) of the high yields topics though.

The cardiology section is unacceptably brief and missing out too many facts such as the management of the major valvular disease, which is critical on step 3!

So if you go over the online Q banks, especially usmleworld qs (very picky and detailed oriented questions) you would keep searching for the better explanations, which are completely missing out on this book.

Of course, I am referring to a review book, not a major text book. But even a review book, it must be reasonably detailed with sufficient coverage of the related topics.

This book would have been much better if the authors would add more details and add more diseases such as Rocky mountain spotted fever, Hyper/hypothyroidism in pregnancy, Geriatrics, opthalmology, trauma medicine, and Pediatrics/Adolescents medicine of better coverage.

It is simply too "lazy" book that hampers the hard earned good reputations for the FA step 1 and 2 in which I did use them extensively for the step 1 and 2.

Best Recall Book - Use it to prep for pimping 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Surgery is a difficult rotation in terms of content and time commitment. Therefore, it's best to study to maximize your time. This book will prepare you for surviving rounds and those pimp sessions while you are retracting. The book is well organized by topic and great to quickly review before discussing/encountering a particular patient. The book saved me several times during a long surgery. However, of note, to survive the shelf exam and osce, you will need a textbook as well. Good choices to supplement this book would be Essentials of General Surgery or First Aid for the Surgery Clerkship.

    Editorial Review:

Popular pocket book in its Third Edition is made to accompany third and fourth year medical students on surgical clerkships. This reference enables for quick study and easy access in a rapid-fire Q&A format. A double-column layout is featured with bookmark provided to cover the right side pages' answers while looking at the left side pages' questions. A perfect fit for a lab coat pocket, this book is commonly used as a quick review prior to surgical rounds as well as an easily carried tool for board review. Contains updated content, with newly added select power reviews, plus includes 25 new illustrations.

A Good Prep Book 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Over the summer of 2008 I prepared for the PCAT mainly with the Kaplan 2008-2009 PCAT test prep book. The chapters of the Kaplan book covering the verbal, reading, writing and biology sections are all great review with lots of good information and great tips for performing well on those sections. The two practice tests at the end were also fairly helpful overall for extra review and getting acclimated to the actual length of the PCAT.

That being said I felt that the Kaplan book did a somewhat poor job with the math and chemistry review. The organic chemistry chapter in the Kaplan book is a joke and does not go into enough detail. It merely covered basic functional group identification, simple IUPAC naming, and basic molecular orbital theory (sigma/pi bonds, bond order). The actual PCAT asked a good number questions pertaining to aromaticity and predicting products of basic organic transformations like SN1 reactions, hydride reductions, oxidations, and addition-eliminations. However, the Kaplan book did NOT even mention ANY actual organic reactions. And although the general chemistry review is good preparation, the math chapters fail to cover a small portion of calculus and trigonometry. Kaplan's review of calculus like basic derivatives, integrals, and limits is helpful but it did not address implicit derivatives and integrations by parts--both of which were on the actual PCAT. Although, there were only two or three trig questions on the actual PCAT, I feel that a small trig review would have been useful. Despite those faults, the Kaplan book does a great job reviewing statistics, algebra, and pre-calculus. The majority of PCAT math questions tested knowledge of the latter math topics, which Kaplan reviewed very well.

Overall I would recommend purchasing this book for PCAT preparation--especially if you're in need of a great biology review. However, I would take the official PCAT practice tests to prepare for the math and chemistry sections and treat the Kaplan review of these topics as more of a supplement to your main studies.

Excellent book plagued with inconsistencies. 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a very nice, dense, textbook of anatomy for serious anatomy students (e.g. future surgeons) that I would give five stars were it not for inconsistencies and errors that plague the book. No, there are not 12 cervical vertebrae! That is the most obvious error I've found so far. There are several, but considering the size and density of the text the number of plain errors is not grossly out of proportion. The more serious offense this book commits, in my opinion, is to disagree with itself, which can seriously hinder learning the material. Often, Moore will say one thing in the text, another in the summary text, and yet another in the illustrations he refers to! For example, Moore says that the right bronchial artery often is a branch of the 3rd posterior intercostal artery, but the illustration he refers the reader to clearly shows the right bronchial artery as a branch of the FIFTH posterior intercostal artery. In the abdomen chapter, Moore says the arterial supply to the anterolateral abdominal wall includes 11th posterior intercostal artery, but the table and illustration referred to also includes the 10th posterior intercostal artery.

I'm sure that some of these discrepancies can be chalked up to normal anatomical variations, but for God's sake tell us that or we have no way of knowing whether it is an error or variation! Anyway, these discrepancies happen with a high enough frequency that it warrants a two star deduction on an otherwise pristine textbook of anatomy.

    Editorial Review:

Get ready for straight bullet point details. 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is very intense. For those of you familiar with the BRS series the golden books of the series include physiology and pathology. These books are very well written and easy to understand. This is in direct contrast to what this book is. I would compare it to the BRS neuroanatomy. These books are extremely long and very detailed! Much too long for a quick board review book, so don't be deceived by the title. I cannot over emphasize enough how weighed down in detailed these books are. Although high yield facts are present in the books, they are mixed in with very low yield subjects and this makes it difficult to discern what the most important things to remember are. In other words, reading this book is not going to be pleasant. After reading the BRS neuroanatomy multiple times, I feel like throwing up every time I consider that I might read it again to refresh. This book gives me the exact same feelings. You are hardly reading anything. It is just fact after fact given in bullet point format with no flow between information, making 100% recall almost impossible even after reading each chapter 3 times (unless of course you have idiot savant capabilities). You will definitely understand anatomy more fully by memorizing this book, but be prepared to make a major investment of time and effort. As an alternative, take a look at high yield and USMLE road maps.

    Editorial Review:

Now in its Sixth Edition, BRS Gross Anatomy is a primary course review and textbook for medical students in first-year anatomy courses. Written in concise, bulleted outline format, this text offers USMLE-style questions with answers and explanations at the end of each chapter and in an end-of-book comprehensive exam. Other features include nearly 150 two-color illustrations, 50 radiologic clinical images, Clinical Correlations boxes, end-of-chapter summaries, and muscle tables. New to this edition are highlighted "Development Checks" sections on embryology. Terminology has been updated to conform to Terminologia Anatomica. The fully searchable text and a question bank will be available online at thePoint.

Terrific 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've tried Dale Dubin on three different occasions and always gave up midway. This book is easy to read, keeps up your interest, doesn't clog you with unnecessary information, has a good summary at the end of every chapter, good clinical examples are provided and the best part is that it is quite funny. I actually laughed out aloud where he says wolff-parkinson-white and lown-ganong-levine aren't the names of lawfirms!
I managed to finish it in two weeks and it is refreshing to come across an ekg book that doesn't make you want to take extended break times!
Only thing is I wish the author had used more arrows to point out the specific abnormalities and that the last section of practice EKGS was a little more comprehensive.
But I think it is a good resource for residents and students. And I would pick it over Dale Dubin anyday.

    Editorial Review:

Now in its updated Fourth Edition, this popular and practical text presents all the information the clinician needs to read EKGs efficiently and accurately. It is an ideal reference for medical students in ICM courses, house officers, or anyone directly involved in patient care, whether student, teacher, or practitioner. This edition includes new information on pacemakers, ischemic heart disease, and myocardial infarction treatment. The book features more than 200 facsimiles of EKG strips and numerous case studies and clinical examples. Also included is a pocket-sized review section that can be removed from the book and added to a pocket notebook.

WARNING --EDITION #7 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The 7th edition has inexplicably omitted most of the gross dissections of the previous editions!

Good Atlas, but hard to read 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Haines Atlas has some strong points and some weak points. If the option was given, I would have given it 3.5 stars because it probably is above the average when it comes to atlases and I have not used a different atlas to compare it to.

    Strong points:
-The real images are great (CTs and MRIs).
-Cross sections and coronal sections are also well done.
-USMLE style questions at the end of the book are great for medical students (such as myself) and helped me do very will on the NBME Neuroscience shelf exam.
    - Online version is a great tool

    Weak points:
    - As a text, this atlas is VERY confusing.
    - Although the diagrams are decent, the color scheme is not explained very well and they use a lot of abbreviations that aren't intuitive, constantly need to be checked, and often times differ from one diagram to the other

This atlas would be best used with a different textbook (I personally recommend Basic Clinical Neuroscience by Young, Young, and Tolbert).

Also, if you are a medical student, combine the two books above with the Pre-test for Neurosciences by Allan Siegel for review of NBME shelf exam and USMLE step 1 exam.

    Editorial Review:

Now in its 25th year, this best-selling work is the only neuroanatomy atlas to integrate neuroanatomy and neurobiology with extensive clinical information. It combines full-color anatomical illustrations with over 200 MRI, CT, MRA, and MRV images to clearly demonstrate anatomical-clinical correlations. This edition contains many new MRI/CT images and is fully updated to conform to Terminologia Anatomica. Fifteen innovative new color illustrations correlate clinical images of lesions at strategic locations on pathways with corresponding deficits in Brown-Sequard syndrome, dystonia, Parkinson disease, and other conditions. The question-and-answer chapter contains over 235 review questions, many USMLE-style. Interactive Neuroanatomy, Version 3, an online component packaged with the atlas, contains new brain slice series, including coronal, axial, and sagittal slices.

The best option... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I feel that this is the best currently available option for ObGyn clerkship. Easy read and sufficient for passing mock boards - good luck!

Perfect! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is perfect for clinical rotations in OB/GYN. Although most blueprints are very helpful, this is my favorite out of the series because it gives you everything you need to know for your exams and clerkship, as well as helpful review questions in the end (like all blueprints). Very easy to read. I carried it with me throughout my rotation and excelled on the test.

    Editorial Review:

More than just Board review for USMLE Steps 2 and 3, Blueprints can help you during clerkship rotations and subinternship. They are especially helpful when studying areas outside your specialty. Physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and osteopaths find Blueprints a helpful companion to their study materials as well. / Concise, accurate, clinical high-yield content covers all you need to know for the USMLE and rotations / Includes USMLE-style questions with full explanations provided in the answers / Updated with the help of residents to maintain a student-to-student approach / Key Points in every section highlight the most important, high-yield information for each topic / Color-enhanced design increases the usefulness of figures and tables
