Necessary Evil 4 out of 5 stars.

The program that I am in requires that I write all of my papers in this style, so I was forced to purchase the book. I do highly recommend the spiral format, as it is awfully easy to use.

Editorial Review:

In addition to providing guidance on grammar, the mechanics of writing, and APA style, this manual offers an authoritative reference and citation system. It also covers the treatment of numbers, metrication, statistical and mathematical data, tables and figures for use in writing, reports or presentations. This new edition has been updated to include: guidelines and examples for referencing electronic and online sources; avoiding plagiarism; presenting case studies and the construction of tables; copyright and permissions issues for writers; and reference examples for audiovisual media and patents. Writers, scholars and professionals will also find guidelines on how to choose text, tables or figures to present data, writing cover letters, the retention of raw data and on establishing written agreements for the use of shared data.

Editorial Review:

Music can move us to the heights or depths of emotion. It can persuade us to buy something, or remind us of our first date. It can lift us out of depression when nothing else can. It can get us dancing to its beat.  But the power of music goes much, much further. Indeed, music occupies more areas of our brain than language does—humans are a musical species.

Oliver Sacks’s compassionate, compelling tales of people struggling to adapt to different neurological conditions have fundamentally changed the way we think of our own brains, and of the human experience. In Musicophilia, he examines the powers of music through the individual experiences of patients, musicians, and everyday people—from a man who is struck by lightning and suddenly inspired to become a pianist at the age of forty-two, to an entire group of children with Williams syndrome, who are hypermusical from birth; from people with “amusia,” to whom a symphony sounds like the clattering of pots and pans, to a man whose memory spans only seven seconds—for everything but music.

Our exquisite sensitivity to music can sometimes go wrong: Sacks explores how catchy tunes can subject us to hours of mental replay, and how a surprising number of people acquire nonstop musical hallucinations that assault them night and day. Yet far more frequently, music goes right: Sacks describes how music can animate people with Parkinson’s disease who cannot otherwise move, give words to stroke patients who cannot otherwise speak, and calm and organize people whose memories are ravaged by Alzheimer’s or amnesia.

Music is irresistible, haunting, and unforgettable, and in Musicophilia, Oliver Sacks tells us why.

Good, But Not My Favorite 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I read this book based off an amazon recommendation. I was excited to read it since I have heard great things about Jon Kabat-Zinn and there was a CD included, plus I love psychology with a bit of an Eastern influence.

I wanted so badly to love this book. The truth is, it was alright. The reader has to be very dedicated to doing the meditation excersises, while I was more interested in the self-talk and cognitive approaches mentioned.

I think this book would be of great help to some people. I recommend more highly Dr. Daniel Amen's "Change Your Brain, Change Your Life" and Dr. David Burns "Feeling Good."

Editorial Review:

The Mindful Way through Depression draws on the collective wisdom of four internationally renowned cognitive therapy and mindfulness experts, including bestselling author Jon Kabat-Zinn, to help you break the mental habits that can lead to despair. This authoritative, easy-to-use self-help program is based on methods clinically proven to reduce the recurrence of chronic unhappiness. Informative chapters reveal the hidden psychological mechanisms that cause depression and demonstrate powerful ways to strengthen your resilience in the face of life's misfortunes. Kabat-Zinn lends his calm, familiar voice to the accompanying CD of guided meditations, making this a complete package for anyone looking to regain a sense of balance and contentment.

Great reading, thought provoking! 5 out of 5 stars.

Dr. Weiss has written an easy to read and fascinating book on the concept of reincarnation. It's made me think more about this belief and makes me want to read more about it and what spiritual journeys we're following. Very thought provoking.

Many lives, many masters 5 out of 5 stars.

"Many Lives,Many Masters" has explained many experiences and stories that I could not understand before. The reincarnation and the wisdom passed on by the masters are very similar to the belief of Buddhism. I am not a religious person but born in a Buddhist family. I refuse to read religious books because I simply felt that they are written to sell their religious believes. This book certainly will help me understand the purpose of life & religions better.

It is highly recommended for all. The interesting experiences of Catherine and the messages from the Masters will makes you think and help answering many soul searching questions.

Editorial Review:

The true story of a prominent psychiatrist, his young patient, and the past-life therapy that changed both their lives.

As a traditional psychotherapist, Dr. Brian Weiss was astonished and skeptical when one of his patients began recalling past-life traumas that seemed to hold the key to her recurring nightmares and anxiety attacks. His skepticism was eroded, however, when she began to channel messages from the "space between lives," which contained remarkable revelations about Dr. Weiss' family and his dead son. Using past-life therapy, he was able to cure the patient and embark on a new, more meaningful phase of his own career.

An interesting read. 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This was the first stand alone book on Bipolar I have read, and the only one most of my family has read. It is based on the lived experiences of a Bipolar I sufferer (lack of a better word). Kay is a good writter but gets bogged down in accademia speak which is a bit distracting. Unlike the text book she has co written, in comparison, this is easy to read. I still sugest you read it, and keep it on your book shelf, as it promotes bipolar as something normal inteligent successful people can have, instead of the stigma that all people with Bipolar are stupid and dangerous.

Really Helps to Understand 4 out of 5 stars.

Like others, I came away from this book with a far greater understanding, and more sympathetic view of those people in my life who suffer with manic-depression. I have good friends and cousins who wrestle with this disease, and though I tried to empathize, of course I couldn't.

The one question I have, though, is that I thought people with manic depression who are on lithium should NOT drink alcohol? Certainly, the good doctor doesn't sound like an alcoholic, but there's plenty of mention of drinking... someone, please set me straight...

Good Intro to Social Psych 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Its an older book so the information might be a bit dated. Its a lot of what you will learn in an intro psych course or soc psych course.

Good book for lay person though. Its entertaining and well orgainized.

Editorial Review:

Influence: Science and Practiceis an examination of the psychology of compliance (i.e. uncovering which factors cause a person to say "yes" to another's request). Written in a narrative style combined with scholarly research, Cialdini combines evidence from experimental work with the techniques and strategies he gathered while working as a salesperson, fundraiser, advertiser, and in other positions inside organizations that commonly use compliance tactics to get us to say "yes." Widely used in classes, as well as sold to people operating successfully in the business world, the eagerly awaited revision of Influence reminds the reader of the power of persuasion. Cialdini organizes compliance techniques into six categories based on psychological principles that direct human behavior: reciprocation, consistency, social proof, liking, authority, and scarcity.

This book was recommended by my phychologist. He couldn't have been more right on. This is the first real help I have had in solving a lot of anxiety and stress in my life. It is so down to earth on what we know but what we so easily overlook in our fix for the human condition. The work pages allow you to really personalize the advice. I would buy it again and I would recommend to all who want to improve their life.
