Editorial Review:

For thousands of years, Chinese women have trusted traditional Chinese medicine to help them conceive. A recent medical study found that women who augmented Western fertility treatments with TCM, traditional Chinese medicine, doubled their chances of a succesful pregnancy. THE INFERTILITY CURE gives women an effective, natural means of supporting their efforts to get pregnant. Based on techniques and remedies drawn from traditional Chinese medicine, this program shows readers how to increase their overall health and well-being, strengthen the organs and systems vital to reproduction, heal specific conditions that may affect fertility, and even support Western-based reproductive technology such as IVF and hormone therapy. Dr. Lewis' easy-to-follow program begins with diagnosis, using an extensive questionnaire to determine each reader's unique diagnostic category. The next three steps involve bringing a woman's body back into balance through diet, acupressure, and Chinese herbs. By following this program, women will be able to create a welcoming physical and emotional environment for what they desire most: a child.

The best IC book I have purchased 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was diagnosed with IC 3 years ago. I joined the IC Association and buy books they suggest and other items. I could not put this book down. It answered alot of my questions. It is not just a cookbook. She has IC and has friends with IC. They experiment with products they hear could help with symptoms of IC and she puts the results in her book. The recipes are great and she discusses each food in detail why IC sufferers may have flare ups from them. She gives alot of websites for information about IC and other illnesses related to IC sufferers. There is alot of reading and if you skip over you may miss something you could use. For example, this is the first I have heard of this but she tells of using alittle baking soda in a glass of water for burning pain. The other night I had a flare up and felt like I was on fire. The burning was so bad. I remembered that she said baking soda worked for her. Even though it tastes yuk, when you are in so much pain you don't care. I used it and within a few minutes the burning was gone. I used it three times so far and had the same great results. She also has in the back an index for vegetarian recipes, and Low Oxalate recipes. Would recommend to all IC patience. She describes how to test food also to find out what flares IC symptoms. Thanks to the author. Lora

Worked for me 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Three months ago I took a PSA test and it came back 8.79 ng/mL. I had no other symptoms and started looking for an alternative to what the doctors wanted me to do. I found this book and followed the instructions which include a strict diet, exercise and 20+ vitamins. I took another PSA test two weeks ago and just received the results today: 4.5 ng/mL. Still elevated but quite a remarkable improvement in just two months. It will be interesting to see what it will be six months or a year from now.

As an added bonus I haven't felt this healthy or had so much energy for quite a long time.

Good introductory book 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Very good book, everything is simplified, easy introduction into subject, it is almost like being spoon fed.
Pathologic correlation's are given, it does not have all the biochemistry but major subjects are covered and author has conceptualized that makes everything easy.

Renal Physiology Made Easy 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Real Physiology provides the basics needed for a medical school renal unit. By purchasing this book, a medical student is able to focus on the renal system in more detail than in some basic physiology texts.

Simply the best 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is simply the best in its class--a foundation of my medical education. The diagrams are excellent. Text explanations are clear, detailed, precise and, most importantly, succinct. When I die, bury me with Vander's Renal Physiology.

Editorial Review:

This concise overview of renal physiology introduces basic science principles and their relevance in the clinical expression of disease. Each chapter incorporates a wealth of pedagogical aids including: study questions, learning objectives, and clinical examples. Also serves as a good review for the USMLE Step 1.

DSM Rehash 2 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

After hearing several positive things about Blueprints Psychiatry, I decided to go to the store and buy it. Didn't want to work too hard, didn't want to look like a total moron. Then I picked it up, and I think I've seen bulkier books written by another doctor (Seuss, that is). But brevity isn't necessarily bad, so I checked it out at the library instead and read it in 3 days of semi-hard studying. Yeah... I think should've gone with the other book, Green Eggs and Ham.

The problem with Blueprints is that it largely rehashes DSM-IV guidelines. That's OK, and it's a big part of psych, but you can get that with the Current Clinical guidelines pocketbook. What I was really expecting/wanting was something that (1) had bits of annoying trivia pertinent to the exam (2) more information on psychoactive drugs (3) described in more detail patient presentations and (4) discussed how other medical diseases could present like psych disorders. Blueprints skims these issues.

I would buy First Aid for the Psych Clerkship instead. It's a quick read as well but provides more info. I had a good score on the psych shelf, and I think switching primary sources had a great deal to do with it. If you like the Blueprints series, just check it out or borrow it from a friend. Blueprints Q&A, though, is an excellent question resource.

Editorial Review:

More than just a Board review for USMLE Steps 2 and 3, Blueprints Psychiatry, Fourth Edition can help you during clerkship rotations and subinternship. This popular Blueprints book has been refined and updated while keeping the concise, organized style and clinical high-yield content of previous editions. Features include USMLE-style questions and answers with full explanations; Key Points in every section; and a color-enhanced design that increases the usefulness of figures and tables. This edition has more questions and answers and greater coverage of pediatric and geriatric disorders. Each chapter ends with evidence-based references (journals) for students to do additional reading/research.

Editorial Review:

David M. Friedman's A Mind of Its Own is a cultural examination of the penis, from ancient Sumer to the present. Friedman convincingly suggests that humankind's various and contradictory attitudes toward the penis have been instrumental in mapping the course of both Western civilization and world history.

Friedman begins with pagan attitudes: ancient Greeks considered the penis a measure of a man's proximity to "divine power," while the Romans, whose generals were known to promote soldiers based on penis size, saw it as an indicator of earthly strength. Thanks to the spread of Christianity, the "sacred staff became the demon rod"--a fearful manifestation of the devil. Theology gave way, grudgingly, to science. In the Renaissance, anatomical discoveries allowed for the possibility that this "agent of death" was, in fact, only a "blameless instrument of reproduction." Subsequent chapters discuss the penis's role as a racial yardstick; its "defining role in human personality" as asserted by Freud; its politicization; and finally, through the likes of Viagra, its objectification as a "thing ... impervious to religious teachings, psychological insights, racial stereotypes and feminist criticism."

Friedman's study of what he calls the "symbolic muscle" is filled with fascinating side trips (castration cults, ancient graffiti, the anti-masturbation "semen-retention movement," aphrodisiacs through the ages, and, to modern eyes, risible medical practices with the likes of monkey glands), as well as a rich cast of characters (Leonardo da Vinci, John Kellogg of cornflake fame, Kate Millet, Clarence Thomas, and Walt Whitman). The book is informal, but well researched (and documented), entertaining but not cute, wide-ranging but not sketchy, and simultaneously irreverent and respectful. --H. O'Billovitch

Hearing that you have prostate cancer, or even that you may have it, is very scary. But this disease, in many cases, is curable. Even if you have advanced cancer that's spread beyond the prostate, many treatments help extend your life for years. You need good information to help you with the decisions that lie ahead, and this book provides you with this information.

Prostate Cancer For Dummies explains the key issues and problems that are associated with prostate cancer, and assures you that although the initial impact of being diagnosed is devastating, you can take action to extend your life.

You don't have to read this book from the first page straight on through, although you can. You may want to read the first chapter and then move to the chapters that affect you the most. In Prostate Cancer For Dummies, you'll gain insight into

  • Discovering the key symptoms of prostate cancer
  • Recognizing the risk factors, and who's most likely to have prostate cancer
  • Getting a diagnosis, and what's involved
  • Getting well again, and how you can work with your doctor to come up with a plan to cope with your cancer
  • Changing your lifestyle to decrease your risk of a recurrence
  • Coping with the aftermath, from temporary to permanent side effects
  • Handling work and family, and how to help others understand what you're going through

It's extremely hard to hear from your doctor that you or a loved one has prostate cancer. But after you recover from the initial shock of diagnosis, you need to educate yourself, and, with the help of your physician, make a plan for getting the best treatment possible. Prostate Cancer For Dummies will help you achieve these goals and encourage you to maintain your commitment to managing your health.
