Editorial Review:

This title provides an excellent case selection for sharpening diagnostic skills in this challenging subspecialty area. Emphasis is on differential diagnoses and pertinent radiological findings, but the relevant clinical points are also covered. This second edition contains numerous new images (more than 400 total images) as well as an addition of fifty cases. It is cross-referenced to GU RADIOLOGY: The Requisites, 2e.

  • Volume in the Case Review series, covering brain imaging, targeted towards residents, fellows and practicing Radiologists

  • Cases are randomly organized and then divided into three overall categories reflecting three different levels of difficulty.
  • Over 400 state of the art images
  • Can be read cover to cover in a short period of time

Editorial Review:

What happens when a baby is born with "ambiguous" genitalia or a combination of "male" and "female" body parts? Clinicians and parents in these situations are confronted with complicated questions such as whether a girl can have XY chromosomes, or whether some penises are "too small" for a male sex assignment. Since the 1950s, standard treatment has involved determining a sex for these infants and performing surgery to normalize the infant's genitalia. Over the past decade intersex advocates have mounted unprecedented challenges to treatment, offering alternative perspectives about the meaning and appropriate medical response to intersexuality and driving the field of those who treat intersex conditions into a deep crisis. Katrina Karkazis offers a nuanced, compassionate picture of these charged issues in Fixing Sex, the first book to examine contemporary controversies over the medical management of intersexuality in the United States from the multiple perspectives of those most intimately involved.

Drawing extensively on interviews with adults with intersex conditions, parents, and physicians, Karkazis moves beyond the heated rhetoric to reveal the complex reality of how intersexuality is understood, treated, and experienced today. As she unravels the historical, technological, social, and political forces that have culminated in debates surrounding intersexuality, Karkazis exposes the contentious disagreements among theorists, physicians, intersex adults, activists, and parents--and all that those debates imply about gender and the changing landscape of intersex management. She argues that by viewing intersexuality exclusively through a narrow medical lens we avoid much more difficult questions. Do gender atypical bodies require treatment? Should physicians intervene to control the "sex" of the body? As this illuminating book reveals, debates over treatment for intersexuality force reassessment of the seemingly natural connections between gender, biology, and the body.

Superficial material 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book was far too superficial to use as a review book for shelf exams or to obtain an adequate understanding in general surgery. I would recommend the Lawrence surgery book, which takes longer to read, but at least you are gaining a better grasp of the material.

Not that good. 3 out of 5 stars.

I used many of the blueprints books during my clincal rotations in medical school. This one was by far the worst one. The information is more of a cursory overview of several topics. There is just not enough scope or detail in this book for it to be useful. I used this book in conjunction with "Surgical Recall" which is an excellent book. I also referred to the "Essential of General Surgery" book on some specific topics such as fluid and electrolyte management that are not well covered in either book.

Perhaps future editions of this book will be better.

Editorial Review:

Just 1 of 5 successful titles in this USMLE Step 2 & 3 Review Series. The goal of "Blueprints in Surgery" is to enable the reader to review the core material quickly and efficiently. The topics within this review book were chosen after analyzing over 2,000 review questions representative of the Surgery questions on the USMLE Steps 2 & 3.Rather than comprehensive coverage of Surgery, this book is composed of the "high-yield" topics that consistently appear on the exams. All material in this book is presented either as the work-up of a symptom, or as a discussion of a particular disease, to better prepare you for the new "Clinical Vignette" format of the USMLE Board Exams.

A wise and wonderful book. 5 out of 5 stars.

THE WATER OF LIFE : A Treatise on Urine Therapy by John W. Armstrong. Saffron Walden, Essex : The C. W. Daniel Co.Ltd., 2nd Edition 1971, Twelfth Impression, 1998.

Since its first publication in 1945, 'The Water of Life' has achieved something of the status of a classic. Having just finished reading it, I can understand why. Armstrong, who was a British naturopath, was a very modest man who never intended to write his book. But after repeated requests, and after considering that he had a duty to his fellow men and women to reveal the details of the miraculous therapy he had discovered, he went ahead, and we should all be intensely thankful that he did. The book is a goldmine of good sense, practical advice, brief though fascinating case studies, and astute observations on a wide range of matters.

His discovery - or perhaps rediscovery is a better word, since urine therapy was and is known and practised in many cultures and is even known to the animals - came about in a curious way. As a young man he suffered from consumption, had been passed through the hands of a whole slew of orthodox medical practitioners, none of whom had been able to cure him, and some of whom made his condition worse.

But he seems to have been a religious man, and one day, while pondering Proverbs V.xv : "Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well," he had a flash of inspiration which led him to link this passage with a few tales he'd heard about the curative properties of urine. Could this reference to "waters," he wondered, be a reference to the body's own water - urine? Having nothing to lose, he decided to give it a try.

He began drinking his own urine, was restored to health, and went on to lead a vigorous and productive life by helping to restore the health of many others, both human and animal. Incidentally, one of the interesting features of his book, which indicates something of his kindly and unselfish nature, is that he has included a Chapter XVI 'Urine-Therapy on Animals.'

In 'The Water of Life' he has provided details of the threefold 'urine fast' method he worked out, details which will be found enough to go on by mature adults of average intelligence who have a bit of common sense.

The most important point to understand, which he emphasizes throughout, is that one should NEVER attempt to use or ingest any substance other than urine and pure water - whether chemicals, drugs, alcohol, denatured foods, etc., - when undergoing a urine fast or 'penance' as he liked to call it.

The whole idea is to allow NATURE to take her course with as little interference from us as possible. A fast of urine and pure water, plus frequent, lengthy, and thorough urine massages, and, if necessary, the application of urine compresses, would, he felt, cure pretty well anyone of almost anything if undertaken long enough for the body to rid itself of toxins.

Armstrong's 'The Water of Life' is a very rich book, crammed with fascinating and useful information, and interwoven with brief case histories of almost every conceivable ailment. I couldnt even begin to do justice here to the wealth of ideas it contains.

Four books on urine therapy are currently available : those of Armstrong, Martha Christy, Coen van der Kroon, and Flora Peschek-Bohmer. Of these, the Peschek-Bohmer may be ignored as being both superficial and highly misleading on essential matters. The remaining three all serve to complement each other in different ways, with one providing what the other lacks or hasn't gone into as fully.

The serious practitioner would be unwise to overlook Armstrong. True, his is an early book and we know more about the actual constituents of urine and how it does its work today. But he was a unique character, and in his own way he was a very wise man, and I think he will always have a lot to teach us all.

Editorial Review:

In this revolutionary treatise, J.W. Armstrong puts the compelling case that all diseases (except those caused by traumatism or structural disorders) can be cured by one simple means. The therapy is an entirely drugless system of healing that treats the body as a whole. Moreover, the only ingredient needed is a substance manufactured in the body itself, rich in mineral salts, hormones and other vital substances, namely human urine. It may seem strange to take back into the body something that the body is apparently discarding. Yet the theory is similar to the natural practice of organic composting. Fallen leaves, when dug back into the soil, provide valuable mineral salts to nourish new plant life. The same principle holds true for the human body.

Great reference for EMBs! 5 out of 5 stars.

I ordered this book when I needed to master the diagnostic criteria for a wide ranger of endometrial pathology commonly seen in biopsies. I was amazed by how easy a read it is, as well as how informative and useful the book has been. A little pricey, but definitely worth purchasing.

Easy to read 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a concise and easy-to-understand overview of the topic. Unlike a lot of textbooks, this one can be read cover-to-cover without too much effort. Once you've read it, you're equipped to handle endometrial currettage specimens in your daily pathology practice. The only down-side is that many of the pictures are in black-and-white. But there are color photos as well. Overall, this is a wonderful book!

A pathology resident must-have book! 5 out of 5 stars.

An excellent and concise review of the common endometrial biopsy. Simply a must-have for pathology residents!

good companion 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have bought this book at the begining of my pathology residency. Decision proved to be wise. It is concisely writen, language is plain and easy to understand. Photomicrographs are clear, subtitles are informative. But of course this book alone shall not make you master of the craft. The real value is shown, when using the book as the companion to daily practice. For novice path residents, combined with sound knowledge of general pathology it should make "pimping behind the scope" bearable.

Outstanding text, but consider "The essentials" for a lighter read 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

No doubt, this is a terrific textbook and is a great resource for Nephrology fellows, ICU fellows and general physiologists. However, for the med student or housestaff who would like to digest the basics of renal electrolyte handling and acid-base homeostasis, I'd like to recommend "Renal Pathophysiology the Essentials" by B.D. Rose and H.G. Rennke (ISBN: 0683073540). It is from 1994 and may lack some of the molecular details, but is an even more "readable" text.

Excellent introduction 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

An impressively lucid and detailed account of renal physiology, with a close focus on the clinical causes and implications. It is intensely practical, with up to date references (at time of publication) and sifting exerecises at the end of each chapter.

It is precisely what far too many 'nephrologists' have all but forgotten in their obsession with immunology, studying the aetiology of injury is all well, but without a text like this it's difficult to appreciate the intricacy, beauty and sheer majesty of renal physiology. Can you tell the difference between tubulo-glomerular feedback and glomerulotubular balance? - shame on the 'forensic pathologists' who can't! This book will provide rapid relief.

Editorial Review:

This superbly written text gives students, residents, and practitioners the edge in understanding the mechanisms and clinical management of acid-base disorders. Presents the core information to understand renal and electrolyte physiology, and reviews the treatment rationale for all major acid-base and electrolyte disturbances. The entire text is exhaustively revised, and now includes questions and answers in each chapter.

Editorial Review:

This year, 200,000 men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. An even greater number will seek help for problems caused by prostate enlargement and inflammation. This book is for them -- and for the wives, sisters, and daughters who often take responsibility for educating men about health matters and encouraging them to see a physician. Written by the world-renowned Johns Hopkins surgeon who devised the new, nerve-sparing surgical procedure for treating prostate cancer (generally known as the "Walsh procedure") and an award-winning medical writer, here is an accessible and authoritative resource about the three most common prostate disorders: prostate cancer; benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, commonly known as enlarged prostate); and prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate).

The good news of the book is that effective treatment -- and relief of symptoms -- is available for all of these disorders. It's especially good to know that prostate cancer, when caught early, is curable. By alleviating men's fears about treatment and assuring them that many men can lead normal, active lives after prostate surgery, the authors hope to encourage men to seek medical attention for their prostate problems and help them to understand the options that are available.

Good overall source for men over 40 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Don't let the title fool you. This book is not just about Testosterone ("T"). It is about all aspects of men's health after age 40. I found the advice good, on topics like sleep (which affects both "T", and health in general), mental attitude, and things like obesity. The discussion on how being obese basically turns men more feminine makes you want to go out and exercise right now ! I found this book well-written, scientific, but at the same time, like a friendly conversation. The doctor says up front that he wants it that way, and thus, it is not a "too scientific" book, but there is "enough" science in it. I learned for instance about the hormonal systems, and how things like coffee and alcohol affect them. This is a very useful book for men over 40. I think any man will find tons of useful health tips in here.

Editorial Review:

In The Testosterone Factor, the first practical all-natural guide for midlife men, Dr. Shafiq Qaadri offers a groundbreaking strategy for assessing and overcoming—without hormonal supplements—the symptoms of male menopause, including depression, fatigue, explosive anger, loss of ambition, and, perhaps most widely recognized, loss of virility. He offers comprehensive worksheets to help readers quantify their symptoms and gauge their level of andropause, then arms them with specific, personalized strategies for improving their overall wellness. He also tackles that most sensitive of issues—"plumbing problems"—and discusses the pros and cons of Viagra and its cousins. By offering clear information in an upbeat tone, as well as a variety of lifestyle approaches, natural exercises, and step-by-step techniques, The Testosterone Factor helps the midlife andropausal man identify his priorities and follow a strategy that's best for him.
