What a great starter book 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was encouraged to buy this book when I was talking about starting a worm farm for the output from my juicer. It is a great over view then detail explanation of what to do to get off to a great start. The observations and insights gave me enough comfort to just start a bin rather than over thinking it. I created my own version of a bin system that is expandable using 50 plastic barrels.
What a great and interesting topic.

Informative book 4 out of 5 stars.

Very good intro book on the worming composting process. My worms are happy and doing well. Very informative. We use the square worm tower with the 5 levels. We are working on the first one right now. Very easy was to compost and there is no smell.

*** update it is now Nov 1st and my worms are still doing very well. Worm composting has been very easy. I am in search of the perfect scraps container though. Right now I just use a plastic bowl with lid. The amount of worms I have has doubled if not tripled from May to Nov.

Easy to read and follow - a must for everyone 5 out of 5 stars.

Great little book that covers it all in an easy to read format. Explains the process and how to accomplish your own vermiculture products at home and at the same time reduce the amount of waste going to the dumps. It's an easy to learn win win situation.

Updated with the latest information on canine breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club, this lavishly illustrated volume is a treasure house of information for dog lovers, owners, breeders, and prospective buyers. It begins with a detailed discussion of breed evolution, focusing on the physical and behavioral traits that distinguish one canine breed from another. The book’s main section profiles more than 150 breeds, arranged in the general categories specified by the AKC—Sporting Group, Hound Group, Working Group, Terrier Group, Toy Group, Non-Sporting Group, and Herding Group. Each profile tells how and why the breed was developed, and how selection to perpetuate specific traits affects a dog’s suitability as a pet. Advice for prospective dog owners will help them be sure they are choosing a breed that is compatible with their own situation and needs. They will also find information on each breed’s vulnerability to specific health problems, longevity, exercise needs, compatibility with children, and much more. A gift to dogs and their humans 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I love any information that allows us to better understand a species that doesn't communicate via human language. Dogs certainly have a wonderful ally in Jean Donaldson. Her explanations are clear and insightful, based on science rather than subjective interpretation. Anyone who reads this book will have a much better understanding of how to interact respectfully and effectively with dogs. And isn't that what dogs really and truly deserve?

Editorial Review:

*The Culture Clash is special. Written in Jean's inimitably informal yet precise lecture style, the book races along on par with a good thriller. *The Culture Clash depicts dogs as they really are - stripped of their Hollywood fluff, with their loveable 'can I eat it, chew it, urinate on it, what's in it for me' philosophy. Jean's tremendous affection for dogs shines through at all times, as does her keen insight into the dog's mind. Relentlessly she champions the dog's point of view, always showing concern for their education and well being. Without a doubt, Jean's book is the hottest doggy item on the market. Best Training Book Of The Year! (Maxwell Award)

short but delightful... 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

James Herriot's Favorite Dog Stories is a short but delightful book written by the world famous veterinarian. It is beautifully illustrated by Lesley Holmes.

This book consists of ten stories from Herriot's previous books that feature dogs that he has treated over the years. It's difficult to pick a favorite as they all have amazing personalities. There is Brandy, who is such a scrounger that he gets his tongue stuck in tin cans that he digs out of the trash can. TrickiWoo, a Pekingese, picks winning horses at the races. And Gyp, an epileptic sheepdog, only barked once in his entire life. Although all the dogs have special characteristics, it is obvious that it would take a veterinarian with compassion and humor to see that these animals are more than just pets.

I truly enjoyed Favorite Dogs Stories. However, if you've already read Herriot's other books (which I haven't), you will find that they're repeats.

Editorial Review:

Vibrant watercolors accompany a heartwarming collection of ten beloved stories about dogs--from border collies and sheepdogs to the exploits of Tricki Woo, the unforgettable Pekinese--by the late author of All Creatures Great and Small. 850,000 first printing. Editorial Review:

Widely known for her innovative teaching philosophy stressing body awareness, the value of "soft eyes," proper breathing, centering, and balance, Sally Swift has been a pioneering riding instructor for half a century. In book form for the first time, her methods enable horse and rider to achieve harmony, working together naturally, without pain.Unlike traditional teachers, Sally Swift does not believe in forced training techniques that cause stiff bodies and tense riding. Instead, through the use of vivid, unusual, and highly creative images that transcend mechanics ("Pretend you're a spruce tree; the roots grow down from your center as the trunk grows up"), plus a thorough knowledge of human and equine anatomy, this wise and inspiring teacher enables the conscientious equestrian to reassess habitual responses, in order to ride in natural positions, break through frustrating plateaus, and achieve ever-rising goals with comfort, vitality, and precision.Precise illustrations and photographs never before used in riding books explain anatomy and image work to give mind and body new and relaxed approaches to the inner process of riding.Centered Riding is for those with little experience all the way up to world class.

Was a great book in its time. 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

There is no question that the author was a world class dog trainer. It is just as obvious that the book was written decades ago when beating the dog was an acceptable form of discipline. We are a little more sophisticated than that today.

The training techniques and protocols are timeless and I highly recommend them. I used them to train my Lab and the results have been great. But I don't beat him!

Incorrect Discipline Says My Vet 2 out of 5 stars.

My Vet was very unhappy to see that this book suggested corporal discipline for canines. Overall, a good training guide.

Excellent book. Haven't got the dog yet, but really enjoyed reading it and hopefully the ideas written in it will help me train a champion retriever.

If you love your dog and want it to fulfill its potential instead of having a disobedient house pet that is useless, then this is a must read. I love his no-nonsense approach to dog training. He helps you realize that your dog is smarter than you think. Every page is filled with useful and applicable information to help you train your dog to any level you wish.

"Chickens in your Backyard" 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Chickens In Your Backyard: A Beginner's Guide
This summer I decided to adopt a few chickens to keep for eggs. A city girl in reality but a farm girl in my heart, this brought a few challenges. What to do and where to buy. I found where to buy but now what to do? I purchased Chickens In Your Backyard: A Beginner's Guide. It arrived in a timely manner and I began to read. Well it worked. I now have a small flock of 6 beauties, no eggs yet but this book told me why. When I have any problems, all small, I refer to this book for the answers.
I am patiently waiting my first fresh eggs, and with the help of this book they will be fresh and delicious.

Editorial Review:

Your backyard can be the source of the best eggs and meat you've ever tasted. The answer is chickens--endearing birds that require but a modest outlay of time, space and food.

As they learned to raise chickens, Gail and Rick Luttmann came to realize the need for a comprehensive but clear and nontechnical guide. Their book covers all the basics in a light and entertaining sytle, from housing and feeding through incubating, bringing up chicks, butchering, and raising chickens for show.

Througout the book, the Luttmanns express their wonder at the personalities of chickens--the role of brash protector played by roosters, and the instinctive motherliness of the hens. Given some freedom and attention, these birds can become much more than the egg-and-meat machines of commercial hatcheries and broiler factories. Chickens provide backyard farmers with enjoyable pastime, as well as a supply of good food.
