a must have for any horse owner 5 out of 5 stars.

No book is a subsitute for a licensed veterinarian. Now having said that...

I've had this book for years and wouldn't be without it. It got me through my first foaling and also caring for that foal (including vaccinations). While I've not read this book front to back, the signs & symptoms section in the front is invaluable. The chapters are easy to read, yet they are informative and allow you to ask intelligent questions of your veterinarian when it becomes necessary for them to be there.

My mother recently bought her first horse and this book was the first thing I told her to go get.

Editorial Review:

Completely updated with the latest information on infectious diseases, parasites, breeding and foaling, and alternative therapies, the Horse Owner’s Veterinary Handbook, Third Edition is still as useful and easy to navigate as the original, classic text. With an index of signs and symptoms, a guide to the organs and body systems, a general index, cross-references, and a helpful glossary, this book will help you diagnose and treat your horse. You will appreciate the well-organized contents, which will help you find the information you need quickly, when your horse needs your help most.

This is a great book. Its packed with information to help you with basic horse care and to identify and treat numerous injuries and ailments. It has lots of pictures color pictures and it organizes the information in an easy to read format. I would recommend it.

Editorial Review:

Widely acknowledged as the best guide to veterinary care available to the horse owner today, this comprehensive manual is now fully revised to include up-to-the-minute advice on the latest defence against new threats to the horse?s health.

Every horse owner has experienced that feeling of helplessness when something is wrong with his or her animal. Correct diagnosis of any equine disease is a complicated business, but this excellent reference book provides a comprehensive and instant guide to equine health, and shows clearly when expert help is required. It offers two cross-referenced routes for the reader to find the necessary information: via an index of known equine diseases throughout the world, covering the symptoms, causes, diagnosis and treatment of each, or via an alphabetical encyclopaedia of specific diseases. Specially taken colour and black-and-white photographs aid in the identification of specific conditions.

Editorial Review:

Lameness, one of the most common and most troublesome of all equine ailments, remains the primary reason why horses are unable to fulfill their potential and their riders' and trainers' expectations. More preparation time is lost, more competitions are missed, and more careers are prematurely ended because of lameness than any other condition.

This book analyzes the causes, diagnoses, and management of the myriad causes of lameness:
--Defining and identifying the lame leg; spotting gait abnormalities and non-muscular causes; physical examinations and evaluations; diagnostic tools and other tests; the role of the veterinarian and farrier in pre-purchase examinations.
--Physical therapies; the applicability of rest, medications, and other veterinary procedures.
--Hoof conformation and shoeing options.
--Joint, bone, muscle, and tendon and ligament problems.
--Neurological, dermatological, and developmental orthopedic causes of lameness.
--Treatment of specific conditions to the foot, pastern and fetlock, cannon and splint bones, knee, upper foreleg, hock, upper hind leg, and back.

No other book covers this vital subject in such a comprehensive and understandable fashion. For that reason, no other book deserves a more prominent place on the shelf of anyone who owns, trains, rides, or drives horses.

Great Resource 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was a required purchase for a recent home practitioners course in equine Acupressure and Photonic Acupoint Therapy. I find that I am using and refering to charts from this book several times a week. It is a fantastic resource that is easy to read, easy to understands and is very helpful. After major bodywork on a horse recently I showed the book to our equine physiotherapist while we were working out the horse's treatment plan until his next visit to the horse and he thoroughly approved of my proposed treatment plan according to the charts in the book. Not just an endorsement of the quality of the information from myself and the lecturers, but also from our own equine physiotherapist.

Editorial Review:

This user-friendly guide to acupressure is filled with easy to follow photographs, charts and illustrations. The acupressure meridian system, acupoints and treatment plans are explained in detail along with complete charts showing the location of the points.

Acupresure is a safe, noninvasive and powerful way to participate in your horse's optimal health. This book inlcudes the basics of equine acupressure, plus 15 specific treatments for common equine physical and training conditions.

Editorial Review:

Proper formulation of diets for horses depends on adequate knowledge of their nutrient requirements. These requirements depend on the breed and age of the horse and whether it is exercising, pregnant, or lactating. A great deal of new information has been accumulated since the publication 17 years ago of the last edition of Nutrient Requirements of Horses. This new edition features a detailed review of scientific literature, summarizing all the latest information, and provides a new set of requirements based on revised data. Also included is updated information on the composition of feeds, feed additives, and other compounds routinely fed to horses. The effects of physiological factors, such as exercise, and environmental factors, such as temperature and humidity, are covered, as well. "Nutrient Requirements of Horses" also contains information on several nutritional and metabolic diseases that horses often have. Designed primarily as a reference, both practical and technical, "Nutrient Requirements of Horses" is intended to ensure that the diets of horses and other equids contain adequate amounts of nutrients and that the intakes of certain nutrients are not so excessive that they inhibit performance or impair health. This book is primarily intended for animal nutritionists, veterinarians, and other scientists; however, individual horse owners and managers will also find some of this material useful. Professors who teach graduate courses in animal nutrition will find "Nutrient Requirements of Horses" beneficial as a textbook.

Not specific enough 2 out of 5 stars.
50 of 50 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be good for novices, but it lacks in-depth information about treatment. For instance, under parasite control it says "talk to your veterinarian" No list of common wormers, their activity, safety and recommended dosing schedule. At least here in Guatemala, the vet prefers for you to participate in the possible diagnoses and treatment options to make an informed decision. This book leaves me in the cold. I recommend you check out Dr. Giffin's manual for horse owners - much more detailed.

Editorial Review:

Breeders, trainers, owners, racers and veterinarians will find The UC Davis Book of Horses indispensable for helping them better understand equine health and behavior. Backed by the authority and experience of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine -- and featuring the most up-to-date research information available --it is a sophisticated source of medical information readers know they can trust. Chapters include everything on the selection, nutrition, anatomy, disease and emergency care of horses. Helpful appendixes, a glossary of equine and medical terms and an index for quick reference are also included, making this a particularly easy to use, and highly readable guide.

Anatomy of the Horse Volume I 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Equus Illustrated handbook on the anatomy of the horse was exactly what my 14-year-old granddaughter wanted for her birthday. She plans to be a veterinarian and is collecting books to read and study. It was so easy to find the book, order and have it shipped to her. It saved a trip to the bookstore and or the post office. Marvelously easy.

Editorial Review:

The EQUUS Illustrated Handbook of Equine Anatomy offers a graphical view of the horse s musculoskeletal system and the anatomy of movement and locomotion. Beginning with an overview of biomechanics, the handbook then illustrates equine conformation, including the shoulder, forearm, carpus, hoof, legs, back and neck. Adapted from the popular Illustrated Atlas of Clinical Anatomy and Common Disorders of the Horse, this handbook is a convenient, pocket size guide to equine anatomy and locomotion. Includes 158 color illustrations.
