Editorial Review:

The Pacific Northwest experiences the most varied and fascinating weather in the United States, including world-record winter snows, the strongest non-tropical storms in the nation, and shifts from desert to rain forest in a matter of miles. Local weather features dominate the meteorological landscape, from the Puget Sound convergence zone and wind surges along the Washington Coast, to gap winds through the Columbia Gorge and the "Banana Belt" of southern Oregon. This book is the first comprehensive and authoritative guide to Northwest weather that is directed to the general reader; helpful to boaters, hikers, and skiers; and valuable to an expert meteorologist.

In The Weather of the Pacific Northwest, University of Washington atmospheric scientist and popular radio commentator Cliff Mass unravels the intricacies of Northwest weather, from the mundane to the mystifying. By examining our legendary floods, snowstorms, and windstorms, and a wide variety of local weather features, Mass answers such interesting questions as:

Why does the Northwest have localized rain shadows?

What is the origin of the hurricane force winds that often buffet the region?

Why does the Northwest have so few thunderstorms?

What is the origin of the Pineapple Express?

Why do ferryboats sometimes seem to float above the water's surface?

Why is it so hard to predict Northwest weather?

Mass brings together eyewitness accounts, historical records, and meteorological science to explain Pacific Northwest weather. He also considers possible local effects due to global warming. The final chapters guide readers in interpreting the Northwest sky and in securing weather information on their own.

Editorial Review:

September 8, 1900, began innocently in the seaside town of Galveston, Texas. Even Isaac Cline, resident meteorologist for the U.S. Weather Bureau failed to grasp the true meaning of the strange deep-sea swells and peculiar winds that greeted the city that morning. Mere hours later, Galveston found itself submerged in a monster hurricane that completely destroyed the town and killed over six thousand people in what remains the greatest natural disaster in American history--and Isaac Cline found himself the victim of a devestating personal tragedy.

Using Cline's own telegrams, letters, and reports, the testimony of scores of survivors, and our latest understanding of the science of hurricanes, Erik Larson builds a chronicle of one man's heroic struggle and fatal miscalculation in the face of a storm of unimaginable magnitude. Riveting, powerful, and unbearably suspenseful, Isaac's Storm is the story of what can happen when human arrogance meets the great uncontrollable force of nature.

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Any home library strong in field guides probably has more than one bird book; but this is something different, offering an interactive format in audio word as well as written language and visual images. Some seventy unique birds from Eastern North America are featured in a book which offers one-touch buttons of digital audios to pair with descriptions of songs, calls and behaviors. Home birders who want to identify by more than pictures will find this an easy, appealing guide with a difference.

Contentless, poorly illustrated. 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I got this book when I was a child. I was already older than its target audience, but even at that age I thought it was too simplistic for its intended audience as there's almost no substantive content to be found. There are some good pictures of fossils, but the life restorations are all sculptures, most being ugly, inaccurate, outdated or some combination thereof. The book is also needlessly huge, it wouldn't even fit between the shelves of my rather large bookshelf.

If your child has anything more than a passing interest in dinosaurs, they will be better suited with something else.

Grandson's gift 5 out of 5 stars.

Big Book of Dinosaurs
I bought this book as a gift for my 5 yr. old grandson who says he's going to learn more about dinosaurs than anyone else! As soon as I gave this to him, he sat down with it and started "reading" it! Even ignoring the remote control monster truck his uncle had given him.

Editorial Review:

A first book of dinosaurs for young children.

The Big Book of Dinosaurs is an enticing collection of dinosaurs that is sure to excite any child. It is packed with full-color photographs of life-like models plus detailed illustrations. The simple text describes interesting features, while questions encourage children to compare various dinosaurs.

Editorial Review:

Deep in the Grand Canyon, a misty waterfall splashes into an aquamarine pool. An orange and red sunset glows against the rippled dunes of White Sands National Monument. Wispy clouds cloak Washington's rugged, snow-dusted Mount Shuksan. Dramatic, pristine, and grand in scale, each of these full-color images is an impressive tribute to the power of North America's wilderness.

Editorial Review:

The current frenzy over global warming has galvanized the public and cost taxpayers billons of dollars in federal expenditures for climate research. It has spawned Hollywood blockbusters and inspired major political movements. It has given a higher calling to celebrities and built a lucrative industry for scores of eager scientists. In short, ending climate change has become a national crusade.

And yet, despite this dominant and sprawling campaign, the facts behind global warming remain as confounding as ever.

In Climate Confusion, distinguished climatologist Dr. Roy Spencer observes that our obsession with global warming has only clouded the issue. Forsaking blindingly technical statistics and doomsday scenarios, Dr. Spencer explains in simple terms how the climate system really works, why man's role in global warming is more myth than science, and how the global warming hype has corrupted Washington and the scientific community.

The reasons, Spencer explains, are numerous: biases in governmental funding of scientific research, our misconceptions about science and basic economics, even our religious beliefs and worldviews. From Al Gore to Leonardo DiCaprio, the climate change industry has given a platform to leading figures from all walks of life, as pandering politicians, demagogues and biased scientists forge a self-interested movement whose proposed policy initiatives could ultimately devastate the economies of those developing countries they purport to aid.

Climate Confusion is a much needed wake up call for all of us on planet earth. Dr. Spencer's clear-eyed approach, combined with his sharp wit and intellect, brings transparency and levity to the issue of global warming as he takes on wrong-headed attitudes and misguided beliefs that have led to our state of panic. Climate Confusion lifts the shroud of mystery that has hovered here for far too long and offers an end to this frenzy of misinformation in our lives.

I had this calendar for 2008 and loved seeing all of the beautiful pictures of the birds on every day of the month. I will definitely order it for 2009.

Ordered wrong item 3 out of 5 stars.

I should have read the description:wall calendar. I was looking for the tablet calendar with a page (and new bird) each day. That item doesn't appear to be available this year.

Editorial Review:

For America's 70 million birders, 365 Songbirds presents the thrill of a new sighting every day. Close-up and in vivid full color, these are the familiar warblers that flit around the yard, perch on the feeder, and bring music and beauty to our daily lives. An American Goldfinch decked out in bright summer plummage, a robin's nest with a clutch of blue eggs, a Northern Cardinal perched on a snow-covered branch. Plus woodpeckers, jays, meadowlarks, sparrows, orioles, and jewel-like hummingbirds. In addition to the daily featured birds, one species is celebrated in depth each month, with a large photograph and detailed text.

Excellent - So happy with this one 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I love the Sibley guides. The one criticism that I have heard and will agree with is that some of the drawings are a bit "dull" in comparison to other guides. Having said that, this has never deterred from my ability to identify a bird in the field. I both watch and study birds and absolutely adore these guides. Everyone who I've spoken to agrees that these books are excellent. Probably the best feature to me is how each species is depicted in flight as well as percing. Arrows highlight key features to look for. Juvelniles and females depicted. Other unique characteristics noted or depicted (e.g. diagnostic flight patterns or other movements). Wonderful! (Western edition too).

Editorial Review:

This field guide covers the avifauna of eastern North America using detailed artworks, maps and text. Lighter than the original North American Bird Guide", the book is designed to be suitable for regular field use and has a fully integrated format allowing quick and easy reference. "The ideal identification guide." Birdwatch
