I was a lousy science major in high school. Looking back, I have no idea why I chose the subject I did anyway. The point is, I never understood half the stuff we were going through. Now, 10 years later, I've forgotten the few things I did understand.

Thanks to the magic of Larry Gonick I get now get it! At first glance it still looks hard. They really dive right in with formulas and stuff, but after a little while it feels natural. I just wish my teacher back then had put this book in my hands. Or maybe I just gave Gonick the chance I never gave my teacher. Either way, this was an enjoyable read!

Beware that the lab book comes with package edition 4 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book for my high school daughter so I can't really rate it. But be aware that the lab book comes with the package edition so don't order it separately or you'll have to send it back like I did.

...When I bumped into it during my search for a new physics book.

I'm a high schooler taking Physics. My teacher never uses this book.I decided to crack it open one day because my teacher doesn't explain things well so I thought maybe I could teach myself through the textbook. Too bad it friggin sucks. Everything is explained horribly, and one of the most confusing things, projectile motion, is totally left out. This is just the beginning of the school year so I am unsure how many other important subjects are left out of this book.

Plus, although this might not bother you as much as it did me, there are really crappy kiddy cartoons throughout the book. They are not funny nor helpful.

stuff is a bit out there for me. But, it is written clearly and I am

A chunk of the book covers relativity.
Quantum mechanics is presented with its incompatibilities.
With these formalities over with, string theory is discussed.

There are some difficulties here.
Profound conclusions are presented without much background.
The conflicting view points get tiresome.
There is not much of a climax at the end.
But these problems are inherent to the subject matter.

The digressions and historical bits are always interesting.
The endless analogies to everyday life are better than you would expect.
There is a joy about the audacity of the subject which comes through.

The Secret De-CODE-er Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I've worked my way through the NEC and taken Residential Electrical training, but this book made sense out of the chaos. In simple terms the author explains, not only the code, but the reasoning behind it ... and then offers a common sense approach to wiring a home not just to meet code, but to meet the needs of today's home owner. I build for Habitat for Humanity. Economy and common sense are our stock in trade. Ya gotta have this one!

First, let me say that I'm a do it yourself guy, and have been finishing my 1600 sf basement. This is the first large project that I've undertaken. This consisted of a large theater, bathroom, equipment room, exercise area, wet bar, and large common area. I added 53 outlets, 25 can lights, and a number of switches.

I'm rather handy and like to build things, but I always need a good reference that I can use to ensure that I understand the principles and tricks of whatever I'm working on. This book was the answer to all of my questions. It was in depth enough that I was able to fully understand the concepts as well as the practice of various wiring situations. It covered the "WHY'S" as well as the "HOW'S". Electrical is one of those trades that really needs to be done correctly, and there is little margin for error. This title is the only one that you will need when undertaking a large project such as a remodels, additions, etc. I wouldn't recommend it for the casual outlet addition, new light install, etc as it is much too comprehensive for folks completing these tasks.

The book contains over 1001 practice questions for MCAT. The shear amount of practice from this book is guaranteed to help you prepare for MCAT one way or another.
How similar the questions are to actual MCAT physics questions is a whole another matter. And in truth not too similar. Firstly, actual MCAT physics questions are often based on a passage, all the physics questions from Examkrackers are standalone questions. Actual MCAT questions vary in topic from one question to the next, in this book questions are grouped together by topic. So if you're trying to simulate MCAT testing conditions while doing the exercises in this practice book it wouldn't be a realistic simulation. Secondly because all questions are standalone, it's hard to set time limits for a number of questions. Of course you're always trying to do the questions as fast as you can, being as careful as you can. But taking the MCAT requires a good sense of timing that you probably won't get from this book. Thirdly, the content of the questions in this book rely on what is extra to the MCAT. So there may be questions that require a bit of memorization and knowledge from other sciences. In itself this is not a bad thing, but it should dictate the way you use the book.
If you have time, I would recommend doing all the questions in there. And then moving on to more realistic practice from other books.

The Greatest Physics Tutorial Ever Written 5 out of 5 stars.

Feynman doesn't just teach physics in these books: he teaches you to think like a physicist should. One complaint I've heard is that there's not enough math in them. "Too many words." (Kinda reminds you of Armadeus.) There are plenty of books that have the math. These books offer insight -- something that is very hard to come by in formal physics education.

The introductory material in Volume 1 is highly quotable. You can get your money's worth right there.

When I started Volume 2, I'd had undergraduate electricity and magnetism and found it dry and boring. After Volume 2, I was so pumped, I wanted to teach the subject.

I read Volume 3 when I was starting graduate quantum mechanics. My first final was oral, two-on-one. The professor had a second prof sit in with him to quiz each student. They opened with a few questions on the uncertainty principle. I started rattling off some of the insights I'd gotten from Volume 3. These guys must not have read it, because they were blown away. They'd ask a question and I'd answer and then follow with a hook to keep them coming back. I spent an hour of the two-hour exam on the uncertainty principle! Talk about getting off on the right foot with a new prof!

These books have been an inspiration to me for the last 40 years. Whether you're a student or a Ph.D. -- and especially if you teach at any level -- you must not be without them. They will improve your understanding of physics, and they'll equip you to better communicate it.

I realize that I've sounded a little over-the-top in this review. If I said less, I'd be understating my honest opinion.

Worst book on Tesla ever! 1 out of 5 stars.

This is by all means the worst book on Nikola Tesla ever! This book portrays Tesla in a way that he never was, a confused lunatic with confused visions and a hard line nationalist attitude. It is no wonder that one reader nicknamed huh concluded that Tesla was stupid and was not able to finish most of his inventions (by the way, this guy sounds like someone from Edison's camp). Tesla was born in an environment of constant clashes between Croats and Serbs, and Ottoman empire (not "Asian barbarians" as this author constantly portrays this great Empire) had nothing to do with Tesla's departure to US. Teslas's father was orthodox priest (a hardliner) who wanted to see his son in the Serbian army (it is the same army who completely escaped into Greece which is unknown example of cowardice in the history and whose king also escaped to England leaving his nation to German mercy, thus Tesla did not see anything great in this "great army"). Tesla refused going to Serbian army and he refused being hard-line nationalist. Tesla once said:" I am proud of my country Croatia and my Serbian nationality". This indicates best that he was not hard-line nationalist (keep in mind that Serbian nationalist even today claim that Croatia is occupied Serbian territory and that it will be wiped off the map). This author actually invented many stories of Tesla's life and even more of them are from second or third hand, totally untrue.
On the technical aspect of this book it is not even worth any comments. Someone who does not know anything about electrical tech must be wondering, what the heck did this guy Tesla invent anyway (hence huh reader again)? I would describe the technical portion of this book as a good joke; even Mr. Bean would do it better. Author just could not sustain a certain hatred for Ottoman empire, which by the way was not much different then eg. Roman empire. Stay away from this book, you will not learn anything from it and could be infected with serious hate.
This book is a zero mark!

I bought this book to help my daughter with her physics class. I just wanted to help her practice with a few of the easier problems given that she is still in high school. Surprisingly, I found the book better in comparison to the problems given in her actual textbook. Obviously, one cannot learn physics from scratch by doing these problems alone. Some initial instruction is required. However, once the basic concepts of physics are learned, this in turn becomes an excellent practice guide in order to master the topics covered. No matter what your level of acheivement is, this book will help you get to the next level. I wish I had found this book a lot sooner.

Ms. Cravens has written a very good book discussing the complete nuclear power cycle from a lay person's perspective. Her discussions concerning power baseloading and comparing nuclear sources to coal sources for powering the national power grid are narratives that are rarely, if ever, discussed outside of the power industry due to the emotional issues that nuclear power brings forth in people.

As a non-technical author and former protester against nuclear power, Ms. Cravens tackles the subject material of nuclear power, the security issues, health issues and comparisons to other major power sources with a thoroughness not usually seen at this level. Her approach to "tag along" with noted retired DOE scientist, Rip Anderson and his openness and patience towards teaching a non-technically trained person the ins and outs of the nuclear power cycle add to the narrative. The unique approach she takes to treat her investigation of nuclear power as a personal journey leads to Ms. Cravens' ultimate understanding that nuclear power must be one of the power sources we rely on for our power needs as we go into the 21st century.

The book provides an excellent overview partly due to the length of time it takes for Ms. Craven's accounts of her travels and interviews to be written. Ms. Cravens does not try to write this book in 3 or 6 months just to ride the coattails of the latest nuclear headlines. Instead she took the time she needed to fully understand nuclear power, other sources of electrical power and the subject of baseloading before finalizing her book. The time was well spent as she is able to competently write about the use of nuclear power in today's world of shrinking inventory of carbon based fuels, greenhouse effects and increasing international tensions.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is truly interested in the discussion and future of nuclear power. It does not answer every technical question but that was never the goal of the book. What Ms. Cravens' book does is address the necessary critical technical and nontechnical questions about the nuclear power cycle and the power needs of the United States from a layperson's level. This book should be used as reference material for any critical discussions or debates concerning the pros and cons of nuclear power.
