Particle physics still alive? 3 out of 5 stars.

Frank Wilczek, Physics Professor, MIT, Nobel Prize winner 2004,
427 publications, impressive work on theoretical particle physics.

This book is a classic, and a great read for anyone who is interested in physics.

Looking at the MIT website, there are many physics professors. What about the students? They can do research on particle physics. Where are the jobs when they graduate? How do they make a living? This is the main reason that Physics is fairly dead for the rest of the country.

I got my Ph.D. in Chemical Physics. I worked at Princeton University, under the late Dr. Lyman Spitzer. The first thing he told me, was there was no guarantee of jobs if you worked here. He was brutally honest and I appreciated that to this day.

I subsequently changed my field, Physics to Chemistry, to Computer Science, then to work as a Business Professor. Today, I teach everything from Accounting to Unix.

Yes, Physics is the foundation of everything. Dr. Wilczek has done very well. But for the young aspiring physics researcher, you need to put in 10 times the effort to be the next Dr. Wilczek. Good luck.

Feynman never got out of his box, because he never had one! 5 out of 5 stars.

Part physicist, part prankster, part musician, part teacher, part genius, part story teller, part little boy and all human being, this is the true story of Richard Feynman. He was a man with an insatiable curiosity, and had a zest to explore the world of physics, human nature and himself.

The stories in the book are funny, entertaining and enlightening. Feynman never got out of his box, because he never had one. From the gifted young boy who fixed radios by thinking to the top notch physicist who could explain concepts to laymen like no one else, Feynman was one of a kind.

Well worth the read!

I enjoyed the book so much I am on my second reading of the book. This book explains Quantum Physics better for me than dance of the wu-li masters.
I am a Buddhist and most of everything in this book rings true to the Buddhist view of life. Someone needs to take this material and make a documentary out of it. thanks F. White-Poe

I found this book to be absolutely mind-boggling. It is incredible that one man could be a pioneer in so many separate fields of technology. Moreover, it is incredible that one man can be traced back to be the originator of practically all of our global power and information infrastrucure- yet he benefitted so little for it in terms of either credit or wealth.

Nikola Tesla was the single genius behind the the entire modern polyphase and single phase system for generating, transmitting, and utilizing electrical current. He was no mere theorist- he actually designed the dynamos, motors (the FIRST AC motors- when all the "experts" said that it was impossible), transformers, and automatic controls. It all occured to him in a flash in the 1880's. This alone should have made him the greatest of modern inventors, yet it was only a tiny part of his genius. Tesla also invented wireless communication (Marconi used his patents and lied about it.) Now combine this with his seminal work in superconductivity (he had to invent the technology to produce liquid oxygen on an indistrial scale), cryogenics, flourescent lights, radio-control, robotics, logic circuits, x-rays, radar, aeronautics, bladeless turbines, etc. He didn't merely predict the developments in these fields- if you look he held the original U.S. patents backed by detailed drawings and models (this book does an excellent job in tracing those patents.) Much of it dated from the 19th century- before the "electron" had been discovered or named.

Yet, he received so little in credit or financial reward. After his time working for Edison (who cheated him him out of his promised fee for redesigning his DC dynamos), and after starting up and being forced out of his own arc lighting company, he was actually pennyless and forced to work as a street gang laborer during the recession of of 1886. He barely survived. In fact he often found it difficult to even pay his room rent during his life. One is stunned to find that this greatest of minds could be so poorly treated by society- it truly puts one own misfortunes into perspective...

Those people who only associate the inventor with high frequency, high voltage stage spectaculars only see the tip of the iceburg. The only reason that Tesla even put on such theatrical displays was to try to attract investment capital from ignorant but wealthy men that did not understand his real work.

Personally, Tesla was an enigma. He held that human beings were fundamentally no more than "meat machines." Yet there has seldom been a more altuistic personality. He did not subscibe to the rule of the jungle and the social Darwinism of his times. In fact, he essentially gave away his royalty rights to Westinghouse just to see that his superior system would actually be given to the world. Plus, there is the fact that Tesla experienced many instances of ESP and precognition in his life- yet he seemed to pss this off as a type of "mental radio" not yet explained. However, he never did come to grips as to how he could predict events in the future...

One result of my reading the is book was that I grew ashamed that I kept a picture of Thomas Edison over my drawing board for years. Edison was a petty little man who behaved shamefully, especially concerning Tesla. Tesla was by far the greater innovator, plus a polished gentleman, linguist, and poet. One thing stuck out forcefully- Tesla was a great believer in developing solar, wind, geothermal, and ocean power as well as other forms of revewable energy. On the other hand, Edison held that such methods would not be needed for 50,000 years because just chopping down the South American jungles would provide us with that much fuel...

Already thoroughly familiar to the seasoned science fiction fan, Hyperspace is that realm which enables a spaceship captain to take his ship on a physics-defying shortcut (or "wormhole") to the outer shores of the Galaxy in less time than it takes a 747 to fly from New York to Tokyo. But in the past few years, physicists on the cutting edge of science have found that a 10-dimensional Hyperspace may actually exist, albeit at a scale almost too small to comprehend, smaller even than a quark; and that in spite of its tiny size, it may be the basis on which all the forces of nature will be united. This is the first book for a general audience on one of the latest, most exciting developments in modern science. It is not possible to express the ideas of modern physics without using mathematics very different from what one studies in high school. But a popular physics book can hardly assume more than a high school level of math. Therefore popular physics books are impossible.

Penrose's 'The Road to Reality' is a demonstration of this proposition. Penrose must be congratulated for facing the problem head on, not shying away from the formulae and trying to teach his readers all the mathematics needed. Penrose is more capable than most for such an undertaking, and often he comes up with clever, intuitive ways of explaining difficult concepts. But ultimately the beautifully-crafted intuition collapses due to the lack of a supporting structure of necessary technical details and hard proofs and the reader is left holding fuzzy ideas which he cannot independently apply.

The book would be a great way for a graduate student in physics or mathematics to see the big picture. Others would do well to stick either with less ambitious popularizations or to go straight to the textbooks. For the former, my recommendation would be Penrose's own The Emperor's New Mind: Concerning Computers, Minds, and the Laws of Physics (Popular Science) while for the latter there is no better place to begin than Singer and Thorpe's Lecture Notes on Elementary Topology and Geometry (Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics) and Needham's Visual Complex Analysis.
