Best Book & DVD on the Subject of a North American Great Ape! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is seminal work in the research of "BIGFOOT." The author is a man of science, and not a "Believer" putting his academic job on the line, and being an EXPERT in the study of how primate learned to be bipedal (walk on 2 legs) this anatomist, and archaeologist systematically goes through the EVIDENCE and not the hyped up sensational cases to prove that their is a high likely hood that their is an unknown primate in North America predating white man's arrival into this country. He backs up what he says. Anyone with an open mind, who is not easily swayed but convinced by science will come away thinking there IS A HIGH LIKELY HOOD we are not the only large primate in North America. I think even if you have seen the video on the Discovery Channel one would be wise to buy both the book and DVD with the special features that are not shown when aired on TV would be a good investment. I'm sure the avid debunkers have not studied the book, nor the DVD. KUDOS Dr. Meldrum!!!

Editorial Review:

In this landmark work on a subject too often dismissed as paranormal or disreputable, Jeffrey Meldrum gives us the first book on sasquatch to be written by a scientist with impeccable academic credentials, an objective look at the facts in a field mined with hoaxes and sensationalism. Meldrum reports on the work of a team of experts from a wide variety of fields who were assembled to examine the evidence for a large, yet undiscovered, North American primate. He reviews the long history of this mystery--which long predates the "bigfoot" flap of the late fifties--and explains all the scientific pros and cons in a clear and accessible style, amplified by over 150 illustrations. Anyone who has pondered the mysteries of human evolution will be fascinated and eager to join Dr. Meldrum in drawing their own conclusion.

Editorial Review:

The bicycle is almost unique among human-powered machines in that it uses human muscles in a near-optimum way. This new edition of the bible of bicycle builders and bicyclists provides just about everything you could want to know about the history of bicycles, how human beings propel them, what makes them go faster, and what keeps them from going even faster. The scientific and engineering information is of interest not only to designers and builders of bicycles and other human-powered vehicles but also to competitive cyclists, bicycle commuters, and recreational cyclists. The third edition begins with a brief history of bicycles and bicycling that demolishes many widespread myths. This edition includes information on recent experiments and achievements in human-powered transportation, including the "ultimate human- powered vehicle," in which a supine rider in a streamlined enclosure steers by looking at a television screen connected to a small camera in the nose, reaching speeds of around 80 miles per hour. It contains completely new chapters on aerodynamics, unusual human-powered machines for use on land and in water and air, human physiology, and the future of bicycling. This edition also provides updated information on rolling drag, transmission of power from rider to wheels, braking, heat management, steering and stability, power and speed, and materials. It contains many new illustrations.

Shockingly Readable 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book as a textbook for a class, and I have to say that it is a surprisingly readable math book. The class only used the first few chapters, but I find myself flipping through the rest of the book and trying to understand more advanced material. This is a good book for a scientist who needs to learn linear and nonlinear dynamics but is a little intimidated.

Keep in mind, this is a math book, and no writer can turn math into something it isn't. Still, the writer gives lots of relevant examples (especially in the problems--the only complaint I have is that the solutions in the back don't give any explanation, and these solutions are a bit sparse), and milks as much storytelling out of the subject matter as is possible. I thoroughly recommend it--it brings out the closet math geek in everyone!

Editorial Review:

An introductory text in nonlinear dynamics and chaos, emphasizing applications in several areas of science, which include vibrations, biological rhythms, insect outbreaks, and genetic control systems. Contains a rich selection of illustrations, with many exercises and examples. Softcover.

Great reference for college bio 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This book is definitely written in a reader friendly manner. It's nice and brief. It gets right to the point without having to read the same passage over and over again. I also recommend:
The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations
(Volume 1: isbn 1933023007)
(Volume 2: isbn 1933023015)
(Volume 3: isbn 1933023023)
These three study guides helped me to get excellent grades. They had the kind of questions that I got on my college biology tests. The Biology Cliff Notes made biology learning a lot faster.

Editorial Review:

Flash Cards in BIOLOGY present all the major topics of biology in a condensed format that can be easily understood and quickly assimilated. The key subdisciplines of biology are featured, including Cell Biology, Genetics, Evolution, Biochemistry, Plant Biology, Animal Biology, and Human Biology. This unique reference supplements a standard introductory course in biology as it is taught in all college and precollege programs.

Too much personal bias for a purported factual book 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Let me start by saying that I enjoyed Don't Know Much About History, and some of this author's children's books such as Don't Know Much About the Presidents. They present facts in a fun way, and provide interesting details that are little known to many. I began eagerly reading Don't Know Much About Geography expecting the same format and writing style. Unfortunately, this book (and Don't Know Much About the Universe) were laced with just enough insults and left-leaning commentary to take the enjoyment out of these books.

Mr. Davis was, too often, injecting his own, clearly patronizing opinions about what can loosely be termed the Judeo-Christian religions. He is obviously entitled to his opinions, but in a book that is supposedly factual - even a humorously factual book - these jabs seem unneccessary and frankly, annoying. He speaks of those people of the past (both famous and not) that had a religious faith as being "chained" to it or somehow held down/held back, both intellectually and literally because of their faith. In fact, he is blatantly condescending towards "religion" in general.

In addition, he often insults those who can be termed "conservative" leaders of the past such as former President Ronald Reagan. Again, he is the author and can write was he pleases, but why add politics in this fashion into a book of this type?

Mr. Davis has small sections in the book entitled "Geographic Voices" which contain interesting and humorous quotes from the past. I wish he had placed all his political commentary into sections entitled "Liberal Voices" so I could have just skipped this nonsense.

Other reviewers correctly pointed out scientific and historical errors which were presented as facts. I tried not to focus on these things because others had already described these issues in detail. Let me just say that besides the handful of just plain inaccuracies, some theories (or at a minimum, debatable points) are presented as FACTS. The mainstream media often employs this tool - "If we printed it/reported on it/broadcast it, it is true" - which in turn is accepted as fact by many of the nation's viewers/readers, without even the slightest question as to its accuracy. Perhaps most people don't have the time to verify every piece of information for its accuracy; but that is why, in my humble opinion, those who DO report/write/broadcast have a duty to the public to be accurate.

If you can get past the insults and left-leaning politics, you may still find this book an interesting read. For me, these things were too instrusive.

Editorial Review:

To be useful, scientific research needs to be explained clearly to others--to colleagues, to administrators, to foundations and governmental bodies, and to the public. This thoroughly revised edition of the classic How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper gives beginning scientists and experienced researchers alike practical advice on writing about their work and publishing what they write. The core of the book consists of a "how-to" guide to writing and publishing research articles for scientific journals, explaining every step of the process, from choosing a suitable journal for your work to presenting the results and citing references. In addition to the information on writing for scientific journals, this book provides additional advice for the scientist of the 21st century:
  • What ethical issues are important in scientific publishing?
  • What should a scientist know about rights and permissions?
  • How does a scientist write a grant proposal, or prepare progress reports for administrators?
  • What should a scientist know to work well with the media, or to write for a general audience? All of this practical information makes How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper the essential guide that scientists need for succeeding in the competitive environment of today.

Cecil is once agaon THE textbook of medicine 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

The new Cecil (23rd edition) set a new high standard for an Internal Medicine Textbook. Up until now Harrison has been my standard textbook but with the 23rd Cecil, I have to say:" Hasta la vista, Harrison" . I have been using it for the past few weeks and I must say I am very impressed.

The quality of printing is superb; the book is filled with color figures, useful algorithms (better than UptoDate's), beautifical clinical pictures, and highly intelligent use of color text. Of course, the authors of such an important textbook are the Who's who in medicine, but the style of writing is not as condescending as Harrison's. The therapy section of each disorder is also highly practical and highly current. The use of the principle of evidence based medicine and the incorporation of treatment guidelines made this textbook highly modern. Even psychosocial oriented practitioners will enjoy the psychiatry chapter in this book: the discussion of psychopharmacology of various disorders is deep without being long-winded.

I have been using Medstudy for my board recertification, but now I am spending more time flipping through Cecil than any other Internal Medicine books. For day to day use in the clinic, UptoDate is slightly more up-to-date. But for learning and studying, Cecil is much more practical and it is an extremely good-buy. I just love those algorithms.

Drs. Goldman and Ausiello, thank you for your wonderful book. And now Harrison's editors have to try to play catch up with your excellant work. Residents will soon be quoting from Cecil's rather than Harrison's in morning round as the ultimate authority in Internal Medicine.

    Editorial Review:

Now available on CD-ROM, this full text of the 2300-page "Cecil Textbook of Medicine 20/e", includes a drug database of approximately 800 drugs. It enables the user to instantly locate any word, figure, illustration, legend, or reference from the text using a simple search command. Features include a zoom/reduce mechanism for more than 1,200 illustrations, including color plates.

Not bad for a textbook! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I like how the author has broken down the different chapters. As with most textbooks there are a few areas that sort of drag on, especially the intro chapters, but mostly due to them giving you a background and history of Child Development. As you start breaking into the other chapters the information gets much more interested and it starts to read faster. I had to get this book for a class I was taking, but I found the information also useful in my personal life. All in all, not bad for a textbook!

    Editorial Review:

This text presents theory, research, practical examples, and controversial issues in a way that should inspire students to think about development, addressing the individual's role in both the community and the wider world. Berger's academic background, focus on current research, writing style and commitment to students combine to make this textbook a useful teaching tool.
