Too many errors 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I found too many errors within this text. I was amazed that they were not located in the proofing prior to selling. I had no choice but to use this book for a class in Medical Assisting. Major errors including defining terms with the wrong definition. One section states a word meaning one thing and then the next section had a complete different definition. I recommend any instructor seeing this to use another text.

Editorial Review:

APPALLING book ! Full of insulting stereotypes & little insight! 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I have a long-standing interest in cultural issues in healthcare and so I eagerly bought this book. It's in the 3rd edition--I figured it must be good.

It is appalling! You can turn to almost any page and find a portayal of a person from a minority culture that is presented in such a way that it makes the person sound like an idiot. Not just immigrant and ethnic minority patients--immigrant medical professionals, too.

In addition, she does not modify her gross generalizations by saying, "HIGHLY OBSERVANT Muslims" or "LESS-ACCULTURATED Mexicans" or even "SOME Chinese." No, for Galanti, she generalizes about Muslims, Mexicans and Chinese, with no gradations according to people's country of origin and degrees of orthodoxy (e.g. Muslims), generations in this country, fluency in English, etc.

I am afraid this volume will perpetuate stereotypes. Yes, it may be "fun reading" for people who know nothing about the topic, but they will end up with a view of "how weird those people are!" rather than either any true cultural understanding or a better sense of how to adapt their own practice to meet their patients' needs.

i have never returned a book in my life--this is going to be the first.

For alternative choices on related topics consider:
Culture & Clinical Care (Lipson & Dibble)
Ethnicity & Family THerapy (McGoldrick)
Child Abuse & Culture: Working with diverse families (Fontes)
The spirit Catches You and YOu Fall Down (Fadiman).

Stay away from this one!

Editorial Review:

What happens when a Cherokee patient summons a medicine man to the hospital, or when an Anglo nurse refuses to take orders from a Japanese doctor? Why do Asian patients rarely ask for pain medication, while Mediterranean patients seem to seek relief for even the slightest discomfort? Geri-Ann Galanti argues that if the goal of the American medical system is to provide optimal care for all patients, health-care providers must understand cultural differences that create conflicts and misunderstandings and that can result in inferior medical care. This new edition includes five new chapters and 172 case studies of actual conflicts that occurred in American hospitals. With new chapters on pain, dietary practices, staff relations, death and dying, and mental health, the new edition is more comprehensive and has been designed for easier use. Each case study is extensively cross-referenced in the index, and there is a comprehensive bibliography arranged by both topic and ethnic group.

A good investment 5 out of 5 stars.

This thesaurus is very helpful. You will be able to find the word you're looking for about 8-9 times out of 10, which is not bad at all. I am an English major and therefore use my thesaurus quite often and I give it a thumbs up. The price is reasonable. The look is professional. It's a great buy!

A Good Book. No, make that a Very Good Book. 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a good book. It has good words that mean other good words, and that is very good. Sometimes, it can help you know good meanings of other words, like a good definition, but that is not what this good book is for.

If you wanted to know a different good word for a describing word, you can look up your word, and it will tell you a different good word for your good word. These describing words could be good ones, like 'hard' or 'wet' or 'swollen' and it will give you other good words like 'stiff' or 'dripping' or 'engorged'. This helps me write good letters to my favorite good magazines and different good places on the internets.

Now I never use the same good word over again if I know a different good word.

In conclusion, this book is very good. In fact, I'd say it is better than good -- it's Very Good!!

Editorial Review:

Find the right word to enrich communication. Alphabetical lists include more than 340,000 synonyms, antonyms, related and contrasted words, and idioms. Brief definitions describe the meaning shared by synonyms. Thumb-notched, and jacketed. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

The only care plan book you'll need! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

After receiving a recent email asking me which care plan book I'd recommend to a nursing student who was staying up very late working on her care plans, I told her I'd write a review of the book that was my best friend on the night before clinicals. This is it.

I had two care plan books that were not working for me so I spent about 8 hours one weekend in Barnes and Nobles looking through every single book that had on the subject. When I got to this one, I didn't need to look any further. The diagnoses are in alphabetical order, with:
~the definition of the condition,
~defining characteristics both subjective and objective (to jar your memory of your interview of the patient pre-clinical),
~and a big one, Related To Factors (r/t) [which can be a struggle fine tuning as a nursing student];
~Client Outcomes [Client Will (Specify Time Frame)--answer is--"Ct. will____________(something that is obtainable and measurable) during my shift",
~Nursing Interventions and Rationales (in italics.) On my Client Care Plans forms, rationales were called "Scientific Principle (Documentaton Source)" and my instructor wanted the page number as well.

***Please note: I've noticed that there is an 8th Edition available now for purchase. I don't see how they could improve on this text; however, I would probably recommend the newest edition. If you already have the 7th Edition, I would say you probably don't need to buy the 8th edition. It's your call.

Good luck future nurses and Soar!

Editorial Review:

Nursing Diagnosis Handbook, 4e is a complete and convenient reference to help practicing nurses and nursing students make a nursing diagnosis and write a plan of care with ease and confidence. This extensively revised and updated edition presents the most up-to-date information on all NANDA-approved nursing diagnoses. Further integration of both the NIC and NOC taxonomies in Section II enhances the books clinical applicability.

The standard for teaching EBM 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

As a physician-teacher of EBM to internal medicine residents, this is the best book I've run across for this purpose. We utilize the reader's guides, first published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal and later in JAMA, written by Guyatt, Sackett, and others, which are perfectly complemented by this volume. I recommend it to all of the residents and have purchased multiple copies for house staff use (although I can't seem to keep them on the shelf...) It makes learning EBM fun and highlights its usefulness and, most importantly for busy physicians, speed. Worth reading for every physician interested in practicing medicine based on only the best evidence.

Evidence Based Medicine 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent "how to" manual for those who are serious about learning how to apply evidence based medicine principles. Lots of folks talk about "evidence based medicine" but few really know what it means. This is obviously intended as a teaching tool for residents but is equally useful for any physician who is interested in learning the principles required to do the best job for his/her patient. The size and summary cards are handy for carrying with you wherever you may need them! Easy to read but with great substance.

It's surprising that the sound / pronunciation is missing and the CD-ROM is an Old version 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

We are surprised that the CD-ROM that comes with this dictionary is an old version. Also, it is highly desirable that there should be sound available in the CD-ROM so that kids can learn correct pronunciation. Also, isn't it the time that Merriam Websters publishes a new edition for this as this version is already too old?

Any one from Merriam Webster's customer services watches these comments to address them?

Other than these short comings, I highly recommend this dictionary - as it is single source for most of the words that one comes across.

Inevitable Comparison 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I see there are 72 reviews of this dictionary (Sep. '08) and some of them are quite good. And the reviewers inevitably compare the WTNID to OED. Sure, both are coveted reference volumes (OED is 20 volumes) beautifully fit into your computer's hard drive. What a practicality! --except OED on your book shelf bestows upon you an aura of unique scholarship and seriousness on language James Joyce would have been jealous! Just kidding!

What are the differences between the two great reference books?

Let's see:

1) OED is $295 2nd Ed. 3.0 CD ROM vs WTNID is roughly $45 at Amazon.

2) OED is first and foremost an English Language Dictionary vs WTNID is an American Language Dictionary

Below is the most important difference; if you do not appreciate this point you must read up a bit more on the philosophy of language and semantics (meaning and the interpretation of words), etc.,

3) OED is a PRESCRIPTIVE dictionary vs WNTID is a DESCRIPTIVE dictionary.

What is that mean?

Suffice to say the prescriptive and descriptive are self explanatory words but if I had to expatiate on this point I would say:

OED will say this is how it should be! WTNID will say this is how it's nowadays and discard the judgement about it.

I hope this delineates the basic differences.
