improbably great 4 out of 5 stars.

By the strangest coincidence I left this classic at the office and was stuck at home reading Hemingway short stories. Hemingway writes about drink, and war, and illness. Adams, on the other hand, writes about drink, and war, and illness. One thing's for sure: Hitchhiker's Guide is not science fiction. It is also not science. Probably not fiction either. What it is is really weird, like the front page of the daily newspaper, only more enjoyable.

Editorial Review:

Join Douglas Adams's hapless hero Arthur Dent as he travels the galaxy with his intrepid pal Ford Prefect, getting into horrible messes and generally wreaking hilarious havoc. Dent is grabbed from Earth moments before a cosmic construction team obliterates the planet to build a freeway. You'll never read funnier science fiction; Adams is a master of intelligent satire, barbed wit, and comedic dialogue. The Hitchhiker's Guide is rich in comedic detail and thought-provoking situations and stands up to multiple reads. Required reading for science fiction fans, this book (and its follow-ups) is also sure to please fans of Monty Python, Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, and British sitcoms.

OUTSTANDING!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Beautiful Book! The binding and high quality of the paper and printing would have made Douglas proud... this is the way you should remember this extraordinary and hillarious set of books. I bought two copies for my daughter and myself. I'll be ordering more for Christmas presents - what a great gift for all of my slightly crazy friends.

Buy this and you will not be sorry.

It's easy to fly, just jump at the ground and miss. 5 out of 5 stars.

The Hitchhiker's Series is wonderful and quirky. The Main Character, Arthur Dent, is swept up in events beyond his control when the Earth is destroyed to make way for a hyperspace bypass. Accompanied on his journey across the galaxy by assorted friends, or at least traveling companions, Arthur learns to take things in stride, the importance of a good cup of tea and to NEVER go anywhere without his towel.
Douglas Adams was a true visionary. To me sci-fi books about space travel were always a bit too clean and perfect, think "Federation." Adams, however, has created a bizarre and often ridiculous universe where literally anything can happen. This series is one I have read several times and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys comedy, sci-fi, or fantasy. In a world of writers, Douglas Adams will be sorely missed by his fans.

Editorial Review:

At last in paperback in one complete volume, here are the five classic novels from Douglas Adams’s beloved Hitchiker series.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Seconds before the Earth is demolished for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is saved by Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised Guide. Together they stick out their thumbs to the stars and begin a wild journey through time and space.

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
Facing annihilation at the hands of warmongers is a curious time to crave tea. It could only happen to the cosmically displaced Arthur Dent and his comrades as they hurtle across the galaxy in a desperate search for a place to eat.

Life, the Universe and Everything
The unhappy inhabitants of planet Krikkit are sick of looking at the night sky– so they plan to destroy it. The universe, that is. Now only five individuals can avert Armageddon: mild-mannered Arthur Dent and his stalwart crew.

So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish
Back on Earth, Arthur Dent is ready to believe that the past eight years were all just a figment of his stressed-out imagination. But a gift-wrapped fishbowl with a cryptic inscription conspires to thrust him back to reality. So to speak.

Mostly Harmless
Just when Arthur Dent makes the terrible mistake of starting to enjoy life, all hell breaks loose. Can he save the Earth from total obliteration? Can he save the Guide from a hostile alien takeover? Can he save his daughter from herself?

Head-spinning fun! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I'm not going to give any spoilers in this review about this book, because honestly the plot is so odd I don't know if it's POSSIBLE to spoil anything effectively. (That's the head-spinning part of the title)

Anyway, the humor is absolutely great. I will warn you though, that the plot of this book doesn't quite pick up until about 8 chapters or so into the book. So if you've tried to read it before but gave up because it's too slow, just be patient. From what I have pieced together, Douglas Adams' writing technique is to give the reader several seemingly disconnected pieces of the plot and this takes several chapters to do. Then he slowly but surely begins to connect them together and by the end, you still may not know what the hell the story's about, but it's quite funny. I found this book laugh-out-loud funny and it only took me 4 sittings to read!

Editorial Review:

There is a long tradition of Great Detectives, and Dirk Gently does not belong to it. But his search for a missing cat uncovers a ghost, a time traveler, AND the devastating secret of humankind! Detective Gently's bill for saving the human race from extinction: NO CHARGE.

CD Mix Up 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Was really looking forward to this box set. There are supposed to be five 3-CD sleeves, labeled Part One through Part Five. My box set arrived with two Part Three sleeves and no Part Two sleeve.

First time I've ever used Amazon's RMA system. I am impressed. I hope my box set was a one-of-a-kind error and not a systematic problem with BBC Radio's product. In any case, no fault of Amazon. My replacement is all ready on the way!

A fantastic listening experience 5 out of 5 stars.

I highly recommend this audio box set from the BBC - the terrific cast and the quality of the recording makes this a fantastic listening experience.

A great series! 4 out of 5 stars.

I read Douglas Adams' books with a friend when we were teenagers over 20 year agos but I didn't realize how much better they were as they were originally broadcast on the BBC. The plot lines are so tangled and the allusions so quick, you can listen to them over and over again and still feel like you're catching more each time.

A friend of mine said that he had a hard time following the Quintessential Phase while he was driving. All I could say was - listen to it again! I've listened to some discs 2 or 3 times before I got even "most" of the jokes.

Unlike movies that you rarely want to see twice, never mind 3 or 4 times, the Hitchhiker Guides can be enjoyed over and over again and still not get old.

He wrote some great stuff that wasn't Hitchhiker, too 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

He really got his non-Hitchhiker groove on here and wrote a thoroughly enjoyable, imaginative, and thought-provoking novel that will have you turning pages from start to finish. You don't even have to read the first Dirk Gently first if you don't want to. Just go grab this, dive in, and enjoy. I gave more words to the first one, but this one's better.

...Not the same as Holistic Detective Agency 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is also definitely WAY OUT THERE. But I have to say, I did not find it quite as laugh-out-loud funny as its prequel, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. I am almost finished with it (less than 50 pages to go and those will go quick), but it is VERY ODD! Still, it has many of the same classic Adams' techniques and it still quite funny.

Brilliant, but what would you expect? 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Only Douglas Adams could come up with sentences like, "He was deliberately and maliciously watching tv at him!"
I love both Dirk Gently books, but this one is better, and funnier. I still laugh out loud when I think of Kate's "alleged car". I was afraid I'd be disappointed, since I've been a fan of the Hitchhiker books for years, but these seem to be books for his more mature audience, as the jokes are a little more subtle.

Editorial Review:

Sequel to Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. A passenger check-in desk at London's Heathrow Airport goes up in a ball of flame and Dirk Gently becomes very inquisitive.

Editorial Review:

On Friday, May 11, 2001, the world mourned the untimely passing of Douglas Adams, beloved creator of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, dead of a heart attack at age forty-nine. Thankfully, in addition to a magnificent literary legacy—which includes seven novels and three co-authored works of nonfiction—Douglas left us something more. The book you are about to enjoy was rescued from his four computers, culled from an archive of chapters from his long-awaited novel-in-progress, as well as his short stories, speeches, articles, interviews, and letters.

In a way that none of his previous books could, The Salmon of Doubt provides the full, dazzling, laugh-out-loud experience of a journey through the galaxy as perceived by Douglas Adams. From a boy’s first love letter (to his favorite science fiction magazine) to the distinction of possessing a nose of heroic proportions; from climbing Kilimanjaro in a rhino costume to explaining why Americans can’t make a decent cup of tea; from lyrical tributes to the sublime pleasures found in music by Procol Harum, the Beatles, and Bach to the follies of his hopeless infatuation with technology; from fantastic, fictional forays into the private life of Genghis Khan to extended visits with Dirk Gently and Zaphod Beeblebrox: this is the vista from the elevated perch of one of the tallest, funniest, most brilliant, and most penetrating social critics and thinkers of our time.

Welcome to the wonderful mind of Douglas Adams.

"DOUGLAS ADAMS IS A TERRIFIC SATIRIST."
--The Washington Post Book World
Facing annihilation at the hands of the warlike Vogons is a curious time to have a craving for tea. It could only happen to the cosmically displaced Arthur Dent and his curious comrades in arms as they hurtle across space powered by pure improbability--and desperately in search of a place to eat.
Among Arthur's motley shipmates are Ford Prefect, a longtime friend and expert contributor to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy; Zaphod Beeblebrox, the three-armed, two-headed ex-president of the galaxy; Tricia McMillan, a fellow Earth refugee who's gone native (her name is Trillian now); and Marvin, the moody android who suffers nothing and no one very gladly. Their destination? The ultimate hot spot for an evening of apocalyptic entertainment and fine dining, where the food (literally) speaks for itself.
Will they make it? The answer: hard to say. But bear in mind that the Hitchhiker's Guide deleted the term "Future Perfect" from its pages, since it was discovered not to be!
"What's such fun is how amusing the galaxy looks through Adams' sardonically silly eyes."
--Detroit Free Press

The BBC Radio Full-Cast Dramatization!

Seconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.

Together this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by quotes from The Hitchhiker's Guide ("A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have") and a galaxy-full of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox--the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian, Zaphod's girlfriend (formally Tricia McMillan), whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student who is obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he bought over the years.

Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? Why do we spend so much time between wearing digital watches? For all the answers stick your thumb to the stars. And don't forget to bring a towel!

Presented Fully Dramatized on 3 CDs.

Editorial Review:

How shall we begin?

This is the story of a book called The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy—not an Earth book, never published on Earth and, until the terrible catastrophe occurred, never seen or even heard of by any Earthman. Nevertheless, a wholly remarkable book.

or

This is the story of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, a number-one best seller in England, a weekly radio series with millions of fanatic listeners, and soon to be a television spectacle on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

or

This is the story of Arthur Dent, who, secnds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, is plucked off the planet by his friend, Ford Prefect, who has been posing as an out-of-work actor for the last fifteen years but is really a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Together they begin a journey through the galaxy aided by quotes from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, with the words don’t panic written on the front. (“A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.”)

In their travels they meet:
•Zaphod Beeblebrox—the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch President of the Galaxy
•Trillian—Zaphod’s girl friend, formerly Tricia McMillan, whom Arthur once tried to pick up at a cocktail party
•Marvin—a paranoid android, a brilliant but chronically depressed robot
•Veet Voojagig—former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he bought over the years

To find the answers to these burning questions: Why are we born? Why do we die? And why do we spend so much time in between wearing digital watches? read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. But remember . . . don’t panic, and don’t forget to bring a towel.
