A large collection of quite short stories, published first in all sorts of places, some of them of the mundane variety, which I have taken out. A lot of these in past I have found dated and a bit twee, and it hasn't changed too much now. (3.34 average overall for around 70 of 'em, so not too bad).

First King helped to answer a lot of the questions I had about the Sword of Shannara trilogy, such as the history of the creation of the actual sword and how Jerle failed at defeating the dark forces. It also brought into play the black elfstone, giving us a little more information about this mysterious stone.

The book was relatively short for Brooks, considering it was a one book stand alone novel, but this might not be a bad attribute for someone new to fantasy.

If you are new to fantasy and Terry Brooks, this would be a great place to start. But I'd suggest that you also get the Sword of Shannara so that you can go immediately from First King to Sword so that bits and pieces of the history from First King are still fresh in your mind. This will help to makes sense of things in Sword, allowing you to relate to the past.

I love all of Brooks books, and although I loved First King, it was probably my least favorit in the Shannara series, but probably because I still want more history on the origin of the first Druid council, the actual first falling of the dark lord and some other tidbits I've pondered on along the way. All in all it was a fun read and answered half of my questions, so Terry if you are reading, we still need a prequel to First King and after Gypsy Morph...Maybe First Druid Council of Shannara? :)

Fresh from the collapse of his marriage, and with the criminal Jhereg organization out to eliminate him, Vlad decides to hide out among his relatives in faraway Fenario. All he knows about them is that their family name is Merss and that they live in a papermaking industrial town called Burz.

At first Burz isn’t such a bad place, though the paper mill reeks to high heaven. But the longer he stays there, the stranger it becomes. No one will tell him where to find his relatives. Even stranger, when he mentions the name Merss, people think he’s threatening them. The witches’ coven that every Fenarian town and city should have is nowhere in evidence. And the Guild, which should be protecting the city’s craftsmen and traders, is an oppressive, all-powerful organization, into which no tradesman would ever be admitted.

Then a terrible thing happens. In its wake, far from Draegara, without his usual organization working for him, Vlad is going to have to do his sleuthing amidst an alien people: his own.

"I'm putting down this huge, long, overly-written, derivative, dull, long, book" 2 out of 5 stars.

The Sword of Shannara was a very popular book back in the 70s right after the huge success of The Lord of the Rings when everyone wanted to read more fantasy. I wasn't old enough to read it back then, so I came to it much later. I read part of the first book and, knowing how popular it had been, and feeling like it was a classic, I was prepared to enjoy it. About half way through I gave it to my ten year old son.

The weird thing is, it's so like The Lord of the Rings, at the same time that it's not. I don't mind a few common fantasy elements (especially in works written before they were cliché), but Brooks' plot and characters come almost straight out of Tolkien. This may have been acceptable if the writing had come straight out of Tolkien, too, but Brooks' style is clunky, wordy, and awkward. Adjectives and adverbs are used without restraint. I mean there are constant repetitive superfluous unnecessary redundant profligate excessive numbers of adjectives. And did I mention the weirdly-placed adverbs which are used unsparingly, unrestrainedly, extravagantly, and immoderately? And annoyingly? . . . When I couldn't care less whether Shea and Flick (they're the hobbits-- I mean the heroes) live or die, then the characterization is weak. Actually, I was kind of hoping that they would die. If they died, the book would have to end, right?

Conclusion: These are fine for kids (at least this one is, I can't say if all of the later Shannara books are -- probably not). But, do you really want to teach them to write like that? If not, give them C.S. Lewis, J.K. Rowling, Susan Cooper, and Lloyd Alexander. To be fair: This series is wildly popular. Perhaps the writing gets better (it has been 30 years, after all). I have heard that only the first book is too much like Tolkien. But I'll never know for sure because I can't make it through the first one. --FanLit.net

Since the other reviewers did great job summarizing and specifying good points and bad points about this book, I will just make a comment. I am a big fan of Patricia Briggs and read all of her books (i.e. ones that are available). I enjoyed all of her books EXCEPT for this one. I don't mind the simplicity of a plot as long as there are a great character development and wonderful diaglogues. I was unable to connect with the main characters. I just did not care what happened to them. To me, it was very slow paced and well...boring. Please don't judge the work by Patricia Briggs by this book. She is a great author and is one of my favorites. In my opionion, this book was just not upto her usual standard.

I think that the ability to create a world that is filled with magic and unknown places is perhaps too great a task to do in one book. There are details and concepts that we, as readers, have become spoiled with thanks to the growing trend of long, multi-volume series.

The author does a good job of telling a story within the constraints of a single volume. The main character is interesting, relatively likeable, but not terribly believable. That's probably due to the fact that there simply isn't enough space to do much in the way of character development.

The setting is a small village that goes through several disasters in a short time. The heroine loses her new husband, her family and is plagued by an onset of magical power in a community the equates magic with evil. Add to this mix the return of mythical, magical creatures and you have a pretty good idea of what's going on.

This is a really, good author who's work in other series I have really enjoyed. This is not her best work by any means, but it's not too bad if you need something simple to read on a plane flight or something.

As I stated in my other reviews, I normally don't enjoy science fiction novels; this book I had to read for school. As I read what I expected to be a boring and unentertaining novel, my opinion changed, and I became more open to enjoying the story. I found that it was an enchanting novel that no one should pass up. H. G. Wells made the story come alive and he made the setting, set in the future, somewhere you feel could possibly exist as his descriptions are so vivid and his wording fanominal. Read this story and your beliefs on time travel and the way earth will turn out in the future will change. H.G. Wells gives you somthing to ponder while you enjoy the sentences that flow together like the river he describes. H.G. Wells makes an unknown world seem familiar and is an expert in his proffesion. I guaranty this book will send powerful astonishment and awe up and through your mind.

Hm, I'm a bit embarrassed. I mean here we have a book which is basically a romance, mixed with some mystery elements and set in a fantasy landscape (you can't get much lighter) and yet I liked it. I liked it so much, I gave it four stars.
The heroine is flashy and sassy, the hero well muscled and and has the famous soft spot under a crusty exterior. Their dialogues are fast paced and witty, the plot flows along nicely and never drags. The world (same as in STEAL THE DRAGON) could have had some potential if it hadn't been neglected so badly (Sham and Kerim need some place to hold their witty dialogues after all). Fortunatelly the novel was revised before being republished in Aug 05, causing a definite improvement of style and story line.

True Fiction
Though this book [Faremhieght 451] is a piece science fiction, it relates in its own little ways to the way the world is today. I, for one, can see this world of ours turning into a world with the same basis and same ideals that make up this book Farenhieght 451; a world which trys to keep everyone happy and careless about everything to the point of making people seemingly mindless, and in the process of doing so they destroy everything that brings people feeling and a individual way of thinking. Farenhieght 451 is a must read for anyone who likes a good philosophical novel.

Special indeed are holiday stories with the right mix of high spirits and subtle mystery to please both adults and children--Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol," for example. Or Ray Bradbury's classic The Halloween Tree. Eight boys set out on a Halloween night and are led into the depths of the past by a tall, mysterious character named Moundshroud. They ride on a black wind to autumn scenes in distant lands and times, where they witness other ways of celebrating this holiday about the dark time of year. Bradbury's lyrical prose whooshes along with the pell-mell rhythms of children running at night, screaming and laughing, and the reader is carried along by its sheer exuberance.

Bradbury's stories about children are always attended by dread--of change, adulthood, death. The Halloween Tree, while sweeter than his adult literature, is also touched at moments by the cold specter of loss--which is only fitting, of course, for a holiday in honor of the waning of the sun.

This is a superb book for adults to read to children, a way to teach them, quite painlessly, about customs and imagery related to Halloween from ancient Egypt, Mediterranean cultures, Celtic Druidism, Mexico, and even a cathedral in Paris. (One caveat, though: Bradbury unfortunately perpetuates a couple of misconceptions about Samhain, or summer's end, the Halloween of ancient Celts and contemporary pagans.) This beautiful reprint edition has the original black-and-white illustrations and a new color painting on the dust jacket. --Fiona Webster
