Wilf Brin gets nailed... 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Plenty of action and a couple of new characters you will really, really, REALLY hate. A lot. Wilf, like usual, does his job and does it well - but gets back-stabbed. Read it - you'll see.

This was the first book in the series I read, and hunted up the previous 6. All are well worth the read. One warning - the publisher has no plans to renew the series, even though Bill Baldwin wants to - maybe a little pressure from fans would help!

Update: Bill Baldwin has a new publisher. His books are re-released in expanded versions, and a NEW novel is due by 2007. Wilf will be back!

New Book 4 out of 5 stars.

Like many of you, i have despaired being able to continue the tales of Wilf Brim. I have read these 7 books repeatedly, and basically haunted Bill Baldwin's website to get moe news. Recently, it was announced in his website that Timberwolf Press will be releasing the next book, Turning Tide, as well as re-releasing the earlier 7 books again. I cannot wait for it to be available here.

Editorial Review:

Admiral Wolf Brim's new assignment to secure the space lanes between Hador-Haelic and the Pentad asteroids of Gontor will enable the Empire to launch Operation Spark, a massive invasion to free Occupied Fluvanna, thus ensuring the Empire's remaining source of faster-than-light travel fuel.

Editorial Review:

The Trophy was, is, and always has been, a futuristic, Military-Science-Fiction novel about intra-galactic competition and conflict. Originally published in 1990, it is third in a series of seven novels about the adventures of StarSailor and expert Helmsman Wilf Brim during an epoch of discord and outright war among various star-nations--within a galaxy that could be a far-future version of the one in which we live.

This special, "Director's Cut" Edition is heavily re-written, a la George Lucas' rewrite of the Star Wars Trilogy, to bring it more in line with later novels in the series, as well as the first two "Director's Cut" Editions of The Helmsman and Galactic Convoy. This edition also answers a question from thousands of readers: "What happened to Anna Romanoff," a love-interest character in the novel who, previously, never quite made it to the next in the series

The novel begins just as Brim--once a fast-rising First Lieutenant in the Imperial Fleet--has been thrown out the service during a post-war reduction in force (RIF), along with thousands of other warriors by a Imperial Government that all-too-easily forgets how much it relied on them only a short time previously.

The change devastates Brim; like so many other young men, from humble beginnings, he bases much of his self-worth on his success in his occupation. For a short while, he hangs on piloting worn-out third-rate spaceliners, but when that operation fails, Brim has nowhere to turn. As a last resort, he works passage to on one of the grand liners as a baggage-handler to the City of Atalanta on the planet Hador-Haelic where, eventually, old friends involve him in the great Mitchell Trophy astroplane races, and he ends up piloting for the Imperial Starflight Society.

Anyone familiar with the history of air racing will instantly recognize The Trophy as my personal tribute to one of the grand fascinations of my life: the Schneider Trophy Races that began in 1913 with fragile Bleriot biplane racers on floats and ended in 1931 with Reginald Mitchell's early masterpiece, the Supermarine S.6B, that retired the trophy for all time. In addition, its twelve-cylinder engine was the prototype for the Rolls-Royce Merlin and Griffin engines that years later powered Mitchell's superb Spitfire, the U.S. Mustang, the British Lancaster bomber, and most of the unlimited Gold Cup hydroplane racers of the late 1940s, the 1950s, the 1960s, and the early 1970s.

ON THE "DIRECTOR'S CUT" VERSION: Turned out that Trophy was a pivotal book in the Helmsman Saga, because in the original version, the prototype Starfury was a destroyer-sized starship, but by the time The Defenders came along, it had shrunk to something a fraction of its original size--and made the intervening Mercenaries extra difficult to bring into line with the later books.. It took a lot of rewriting.

Admiral Brim battles at the front for life and freedom! 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The sixth book of the Helmsman continues to follow Wilf Brim, Admiral of the Imperial Fleet in the same vein as C.S. Forrester classical works. Life and death in the Imperial Fleet is center stage upon which Baldwin builds the continuing career of Brim.

As a middle book in the series, it is prone to all of the shortcuts and assumptions a leading book does not have. But to fans of the Helmsman series this provides more of the same excitement and facination of the originals. Though some of the descriptions have now been used at least six times previously, one can skim over them and continue to watch as Wilf Brim fights for right, and his daughter.

A good progression of the Helmsman series with some mature descriptions of Wilf's love life. Probably a pretty boring book for anyone not already familiar and anxious to see how Wilf Brim lives his live 'In Harms Way"

Editorial Review:

Rear Admiral Wilf Brim and his old comrade General Ursis must rally Sodeskaya's archaic ships in order to repel Triannic's vast star fleet and overcome overwhelming odds. By the author of The Defenders.

The Helmsman returns to defend in a new starship 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The fourth book in the Helmsman series finds Wilf Brim as skipper of his own starship based on the racing hull of the last book. Due to politics, the crew ends up as Mercenaries on the far flung Fluvannian star system. Bewitched by his old love Margot, Brim sires a child and battles the League.

Baldwin continues the saga of the Helmsman using his deft touch of technical and piloting jargon to carry the reader through the plot. Dedicated fans of the Helmsman will enjoy the read. New readers should start with'The Helmsman' or 'Galactic Convoy' or many of the plot interplays are lost.

A fine read, but clearly the middle book of a series with all of the faults and traits such a books has. Some mature descriptions of Brim's love life

I rather enjoyed it. 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Although others seem bothered with the way this story was told, I feel that it follows with the rest of the series quite well. From what I can tell, the entire series is based around world war 2, and there are many good transitions in the series from history to story. I don't read Baldwin's books looking for any deep insight, I read them to be entertained. I thought that this book met that expectation quite well.

IF YOU LIKE CLASSIC SPACE OPERA, A GREAT READ. 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I HAVE READ THE OTHER BOOKS IN THE HELMSMAN SERIES AND FOUND THE DEFENDERS TO BE AS FINE A READ AS THE PRECEEDING BOOKS. THIS IS NOT "HARD" SCIENCE FICTION, BUT A GREAT EXAMPLE OF THE CLASSIC "SPACE OPERA". THIS BOOK IS FUN TO READ! THE ONLY SAD THING ABOUT THIS OR OTHER BALDWIN BOOKS IS THAT FOR WHAT EVER REASON YOU CAN ALMOST NEVER FIND THEM IN YOUR LOCAL BOOKSTORE. IF YOU ARE NEW TO SCIENCE FICTION OR JUST LIKE A GOOD STORY WITH GOOD PLOT GIVE THE DEFENDERS A TRY

Editorial Review:

While the Empire crumbles under the blitzkrieg assault of the League of Dark Stars, Helmsman Wilf Brim rallies the surviving Imperial Starfuries for a desperate last-ditch effort to save the core of the Empire at Avalon.

New and updated 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

As of November, 2003 this book has been published in a new directors cut edition, in hardback. The original book was one of my favorite of all time, and this time Bill Baldwin has greatly imporved the story, cleaning up a few loose ends and fleshing out some of the other parts of the story. I have always felt this was the best book of the series and this version is even better! In this book, Wilf, and his comrades Uris, Barbousse and the rest are in a new starship, helping to guard convoys bringing needed suppies to a giant base in another part of the universe, and both the convoys and the base are under constant attack by Nergol Triannic's evil forces. It strikes me as if based on the British convoys to beleagured Malta in the Med in WWII. An exciting story, lots of combat, a new romantic interest, new shipmates, just a dang good entertaining fantasy/scifi novel!

Editorial Review:

During the most chaotic year of his young life, Wilf Ansor Brim, Helmsman of the Imperial Galactic Fleet, faces many challenges while he comes to terms with his love for Princess Margot. Advertising in most science fiction magazines. Original.

If you liked the Helmsman Series, youýll like Canbyýs Legion 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Hey, lets face it, Bill Baldwin is not the worlds greatest author. He will not set new standards for literature. He will not be required reading in high school, nor will his style be appreciated by many. That's not what Bill Bauldwin is about. Bill Bauldwin tells a damn good story, period. Canby's Leagon is just that, a damn good story. If you liked his other work, you will enjoy Canby's Legion.

Baldwin takes major detour into perversion and smut. 1 out of 5 stars.

Baldwin has always displayed a certain facination with hyper-sexual appetites but Canby's Legion is a complete surrender to this questionable practice. I found that his depiction of the sex obsessed imperial society detracted from the story, which was very weak in the first place, and his characterization of the principals (Kobir and Canby) were almost amateurish. I hope this book is an abberation and not the new direction that Baldwin intends to take his work

Editorial Review:

Commander Gordon Canby and Kapitan Nikolai Kobir - space warriors on either side of a military victory - each wind up on the losing end of the resulting peace. As the victors sink farther and farther into a miasma of corruption, the two old enemies find themselves struggling for their very existence, and Gordon Canby discovers that when you fight for traitors, your enemies may be your only friends.

Midwest Book Review - an excellent adventure 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

In this re-release of Bill Baldwin's best selling The Helmsman, Timberwolf Press kicks off the Wilf Brim series. If this first installment is any indication, the series should reach best selling status once again. The first paragraph of chapter one was so well written, I read it through three times. This man can write!

Wilf Ansor Brim - the helmsman - is a charismatic character indeed. Through intelligence, skill, and grit he has raised himself from humble beginnings to reach what to most would be an impossible goal. Determination has taken him from life in lowly Carescrian mines to one as officer of the Imperial Fleet. His courage eventually transforms him into a decorated hero of space battles, mingling with royalty in palaces of State.

Wilf Brim is a warrior with the soul of a poet. In The Helmsman, we meet his compatriots - Nik Ursis, the huge Barbousse, Capt. Collingswood - as Wilf sees his first battle action. He soon gains a reputation as one who excels at whatever he's assigned, whether it be blockade duty, ground battle, or rescuing prisoners of war. Through it all he forges strong bonds of friendship, gaining respect from peers and commanders. Oh, and his life is not all battle action all the time. Wilf finds love with Princess Margot Effer'Wyck. The beautiful royal is scheduled to marry another man, but seeks out Wilf to be her secret lover. Does she really love the commoner, or is he simply a pleasant diversion? Maybe we'll find out in future books if Wilf and Margo stay together.

The battle action is tremendous and the characters well defined. Bill Baldwin turns a fine phrase. Whether you are a sci fi genre fan or not, give this one a try.

Editorial Review:

Book # 2 in the best selling Helmsman saga! Ursis nodded soberly out the Hyperscreens toward the merchant ships, then turned to Brim. "Out there, Wilf Ansor," he brooded, "are real heroes of war. To fight from behind disruptors of warship is something anyone can do. One can always count on lucky shooting to save him from disaster—or heavy armor plate at least. But to face enemy with only black void and thin sheet of hullmetal separating you from disruptors—and then stay in formation—that is kind of bravery we Sodeskayans record in Great Books."
