A mature & thought-provoking work 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This latest offering from Nancy Varian Berberick presents a more mature and thought-provoking work than much of what passes for genre fare these days. In the book, Usha is a heroine confronted by very real difficulties in her marriage and makes choices that are all too easily dismissed as simple acts of betrayal. But these are choices faced by flesh-and-blood people, not hollow, shopworn idealizations. That doesn't mean what she chooses should be condoned, and indeed she bears the consequences of her actions, but that is what sets this work apart -- there are real-life decisions to be made and real-life consequences to be borne. All of which is dealt with in Ms. Berberick's beautifully crafted language. All in all, this is a work to be savored, to be relished, although it is not, perhaps, a work that will satisfy those who have yet to achieve a certain level of life experience.

Editorial Review:

The latest title in a series based on characters from the best-selling War of Souls trilogy.

This title is the next in a series that explores the lives of key characters from Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman's New York Times best-selling War of Souls trilogy. Prisoner of Haven describes events that directly overlap events during the War of Souls, and it features a character originally introduced in Dragons of Summer Flame. Author Berberick also wrote The Lioness, a previous title in this same series.

poetry?? 2 out of 5 stars.

First off I would like to say that this book does have a good story line, that is if you can understand it. The writings that this author (Berberick) uses is not easy to follow for she uses a poetic type of wording that is not typical to the dragonlance series. When I try to read the words to creat that visual in my head of the story it just scrambles it form the reverse writing that the author uses. It tends to distract you from the real story and leave you in the fog where every thing is blurred. If you are a dragonlance fan then you will read this, If not then pass on this one for it does not work for me to be a real dragonlance book.

Editorial Review:

The Inheritance depicts the origins of one of the greatest heroes of Krynn and provides detailed information about this point in history. Fans will be interested in filling in the history of Dragonlance with this novel.

Kidnapped by outlaws, an elven princess places her faith in her husband and the gods to save her. Lord of a ragtag band, her human captor has no faith in anything but his keen wits. The princess and the outlaw forge new definitions of trust and faith and from their love will spring one of the greatest heroes Krynn has ever known-Tanis Half-Elven, Hero of the Lance.

This blade is dull 2 out of 5 stars.

Blah. Weak. Flat. Boring. These are just a few of the words that describe this book. As with the other Heroes books it's not really part of the Dragonlance canon, so there isn't much to miss if you decide to skip it. There is a bit about the Companions, but it is brief and actually doesn't fit well with the Chronicles (this book takes place between books 1 and 2 of that series). Supposedly the Companions "fought to recover the Hammer of Kharas" but in this book it seems like the fighting was for something else and the Hammer gets found later. I won't dwell on these issues though, let's break the book down a little:

Writing: Its fine, I'm not expecting classical literature in a pulp fantasy novel, and I'm not going to mark a book down for lacking something I didn't hope it would have. The action scenes and dialog were good, but not enough to carry the book.

Story: Except for the fact that it relies on a rather irrational event (A ranger's gifting of a priceless sword to a barmaid he never met before), the rest is borderline. Political events often serve as a good backdrop to stories of love and hate, but this one doesn't really pull it off. The love is contrived, the hate/revenge is simplistic, and the politics are downplayed to be predictable to make room for the action.

Characters: Here is where the book really stumbles. The characters are so predictable and stereotypical (even for fantasy) that you really don't care who lives or dies. The stoic good-hearted elf, the lovesick young human woman, the stubborn honor-bound dwarf, the evil one-eyed henchmen, etc. At the end an important character dies and I really wasn't moved at all.

About halfway through this book I found myself eyeing my shelf for what I wanted to read next, which is not a good sign. Considering how many other (better) Dragonlance books are out there, I would save this one until the end, or just skip it entirely.

Editorial Review:

The second in a series of recovers of classic Dragonlance novel tales.

This attractive new re-release of Stormblade showcases a new look for the Heroes series. Each title in the series will reflect the new series design and feature entirely new cover art.

Dalamar: the Early Years 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This Dragonlance Classics book tells the story of Dalamar's youth in Silvanesti and his eventual calling to the dark arts. He is cast out of his Elven home and left on his own to pursue his fate. He goes to the Tower to be tested, and is willingly used by the leadership of the Tower to complete a task that would allow more than one person the revenge they seek. Berberick's telling is good although her characterization of Dalamar falls slightly short of his personality from what we know of him from other stories. Her perspective of the fall of Silvanost and Lorac's Nightmare is insightful and well written, and ties well into the Chronicles storyline. This is a good book for someone who has already read the core books of the Dragonlance series.

Editorial Review:

A talent for magic runs like fire through the blood of Dalamar Argent. Yet he is only a servant in the house of an elvish lord, not worthy of the High Art of Sorcery and denied all but the most grudging teaching.

As war simmers on the borders of Silvanesti, Dalamar will find a way to learn his art. His quest will take him along dark paths toward an awesome destiny.

I can't believe it... 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book is so,well there are no words to describe it but i could say stupid,crappy,dumb....I didn't read the whole thing (and i'm glad because i'm going to return it.) just the ending and its really stupid. Whoever likes Crysania/Raistlin (i'm one of them) DON'T read this book its a real dissapiontment, as for people who don't they'll enjoy it i'm sure. But i think that all dragonlance fans probably do like them so i would reccommed everyone not to read it. When i was buying this book i read a few reviews and some of them said its stupid and that they wasted their money i didn't believe them but now i wholeheartedly agree with them...... I wish i never read the ending and i deeply regret buying it.

Editorial Review:

A journey into peril.

Cyrsania, high priestess of the Temple of Paladine, is blind to the beauty of the world but not to the joy of her faith. Lately, though, her communion with the god of light has become distant. Now a mysterious stone has come into her possession. Its power compels her to undertake a merilous quest, accompanied by a strange band of companions.

Together they endure the burning heat of Kyrnn's most violet summer as they struggle toward their destination: the Temple at Neraka.

If they reach it, their world will be transformed forever.

This novel, set in the time of the Chaos War, brings to life the story of Crysania, a Revered Daughter of Paladine, and Dalamar, the dark elf.

Nice try, but try again. 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

That's right, two stars, I would have given it more but only two thirds of the book was readable. Any one that has read my other reviews knows that I'm not the biggest Nancy Varian Berberick fan, and this book didn't help her score any points to win me over. You should remember before buying this that it is a source book, if you are coming in expecting some story that gives info on the Fifth Age as it goes along than you are wrong.

What you get is good old information, in a half way cool fashion. The way that the authors did that is that they made it as if they themselves were working for Bertrem in Ansalon, and he was nice enough to give a foreword, notes on the writings, and an afterword. I liked this better than just throwing out info and stats like most source books do.

Now the authors themselves, best to worst (and we all know who that is). First is Paul Thompson, he did a great job, the section about Politics is one of the most interesting source readings about Ansalon ever. Stan as always was funny and solid, but nothing that really kept me reading.

Last of course is Mrs. Berberick. She's not a bad writer, I just don't think she is a dragonlance writer, she is way too descriptive and flowery. An example is "Can we say with certainty that they yet pile up their lovely tresses of silver and golden so they may wear the shimmering veils of sheerest silks flowing from their coiffures as clouds stream round the glimmering sun-shining mountains?"...excuse me? I mean does that really belong in dragonlance? I personally think it is a bit overboard for DL, good for some other novel (romance?), but not in the Dragonlance shared world.

Final Thought: You really have to love the Fifth Age to get this and enjoy it totally, if you have money and want to buy a DL book then go ahead, but don't expect something that will change your view of Krynn.

Editorial Review:

Come wander the highways and byways of Krynn in the Fifth Age.

Another book that shouldn't be out of print! 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Ms. Berberick's characterization gets a lot stronger in this sequel to Jewels of Elvish. The story wasn't quite as exciting, but still really good. This, like the first book, really shouldn't be out of print. I had to hunt for months at several used bookstores before I was able to find them. If you find them, grab 'em...quickly.

Terrific alternate-world fantasy novel 5 out of 5 stars.

The Jewels of Elvish lay deep within a mountain: emerald, sapphire, diamond, topaz, and fiery ruby bound in a golden crown: Proud Ruler of Nature, gentle King of Air, wild Prince of Water, golden Thane of Fire, all held in check by the fearsome Mistress of War.

Long ago a strong-willed queen stole the crown to save her people and broke it apart to field fire and water to defeat the fearsome Sorcerer who was ravaging her land. Now only her ghost waits in the deep caverns, waiting for someone to help her restore the balance she has undone. Her last hope may be a child made for magic . . .

Editorial Review:

The ghost of a queen who long ago stole the elemental-controlling Jewels of Elvish to defeat an evil sorcerer now enlists the aid of an elf and a man to battle the revitalized sorcerer.

This book is out of print! 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I can't believe no one is publishing this duology (with A Child of Elvish) right now. I had to search all over in used bookstores before I was able to find it. Does that tell me that it's really good because no one wants to part with it or that it's no good and I can't find it because there aren't many copies around?

Personally, I really enjoyed it. The first third or so was a little weakly written, but then Miss Berberick found her stride. Vivid characters, an exciting plot, and just enough hints about a mystery here and there to keep the reader engaged. I found it very difficult to put this book down at night. I would recommend this to any of my fantasy reading friends, but good luck finding a copy.

when people ask why you read sword & sorcery, point to berberick. She does the Old Englishy stories with the technical proficiency of 'The Broken Sword' or the Inklings. Her characters are good people and her macguffins are magic.
