Part two of the Rissa Kerguelen trilogy 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

While this book can be read independently of the series, I have found it better to read it in its proper order. First comes "Young Rissa" where the foundation of the story line is laid out and character personalities are developed; important characters are introduced as well. In "Rissa and Tregare" Rissa matures as does her relationship with Bran Tregare. Lots of action and more foundations are laid for the final book in the trilogy called "The Long View". The books uses physics ... but not to an overpowering degree. The storyline is grounded in reality and is good sci-fi.

A Classic in SCi Fi 5 out of 5 stars.

I was first introduced to F. M. Busby in college years ago and it turned into a long love affair. "Rissa and Tregare" was the first book I purchased. It is a book you would be hard pressed to put down. Clear your calender before staring this book and have lots of coffee handy!

Editorial Review:

Living a desperate life in the Total Welfare Center, the orphan Rissa discovers she has won the lottery and takes a chance to shape her own destiny. After she escapes from Earth with the help of a space pirate who may be more trouble than she expected, she soon discovers that together they might have a chance to shape Earth's destiny as well.

Rebel's Seed 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Rebel's Seed is the continuing story of Rissa and Tregare. These two together have overthrown the evil United Energy and Transport conglomerate that had held Earth in a stranglehold by creating a Total Welfare State. This is the story of Lisele, their daughter. She survives a shipwreck on a sparsely populated planet and with great ingenuity helps her shipmates defeat the UET outpost that nearly captures them. This is an old story, but one I have read again, and again. I guess I like it so much because the welfare state could really happen. The story can also be found in a book called the "Rebel Dynasty" which also includes the "Alien Debt".

The continuing saga 4 out of 5 stars.

This book continues the storyline started with the Rissa trilogy ("Young Rissa," "Rissa and Tregare," and "The Long View"). After "The Long View" comes "The Alien Debt" and then "Rebel's Seed." This story is of Lisele, daughter of Rissa Kerguelen and Bran Tregare. In many ways Lisele is similar to her parents in personality ... yet without their early harsh years of development. Too, this is the story of Arlen Limmer, son of Derek Limmer and Felcie Parager who were main characters in the earlier books as well. Arlen is even more sheltered than Lisele and this plays out in their interraction and developing relationship. It was good to see a continuation in this series, though we lose contact with many of the earlier main characters in this book.

The beginning of a saga not to be missed 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is like many firsts. It could have been thicker with details but the plot is solid and the books to follow are fantastic. The plot is solid SF fare with a political twist. Basically "what would happen if corporations really DID take over most of the world" is the backdrop for a seriously good read - even the 5th time around.

Exceptional start to a wonderful series 5 out of 5 stars.

This, the first book in the Rissa Kerguelen series, is a brilliant story that was years ahead of its time. The prologue takes place right about now, in which total government control, alien coverups, and cloning add up to a bleak future for one Rissa Kerguelen. Her parents slain, separated from her brother, the five year old girl is put into a "Total Welfare Center", which is little more than slave barracks. Neglected, abused, and raped, the lonely girl grows up to win her way out of the Center via a lottery. Once out, she decides to go into hiding and get training to survive the Government which has almost total control over the planet earth. Making a valuble friend in Erika Hulzein, the heir to the survival training center, she leaves earth for a better future...and finds more adventure. Rissa is an inspirational feminist; smart, strong, quick, and able to fight for her self and beliefs. I found her to be a classic heroine, on par with Scarlett O'Hara. All in all a wonderful read, and make sure to check out the next 2 books in the series.

Editorial Review:

Rissa breathes a sigh of relief as the ship lifts off. It seems she's escaped danger, and no one has recognized the scientifically altered being as the beautiful young heir to the Hilzein Establishment-or so it seems. Possessing the only force capable of challenging the tyranny that devastated the Earth and Universe, Rissa can do almost anything--then again, almost anything can happen to her while she's doing it.

A great look into the early years of a beloved character 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Zelde M'Tana is a main character in the Rissa Kerguelen Bran Tregare series. You get a rough sketch of her early history in the Rissa trilogy, but it leaves you with only a basic understanding of her motivations and personality. This book delves into her childhood, adolescence and early adulthood giving you an even greater appreciation of Zelde. While it is technically a prequel to the main series, it can be read at any point the reader wants insight into this character without over powering the storyline of the Rissa saga.

Fantastic, a real page turner! 4 out of 5 stars.

If you like the rest of the Rissa saga, you'll love this book, I know I did.

If you've read & liked other FM Busby, You'll like "Zelde" 3 out of 5 stars.

"Zelde M'Tana" gives a fast-paced look into the life of Tregare's one-time Second Hat. It deliciously fills in the history of Zelde M'Tana, elaborates on her rise from ship's "property" to ship's Captain by the time she was 18. We see first hand the strength of will of this Wild Child, and understand her love and commitment to the ailing Parnell. If you liked "Rissa and Tregare," "Zelde M'Tana" is a must-read.

Interesting ideas wasted 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Humanity has overcome most of the bigger obstacles to intersteller travel by developing a powerful propulsion system and a system of gates that transports matter over an infinite distance. The gates are linked one to one so the only thing holding mankind back from exploring the galaxy is transporting the gates throughout space. On the initial journey humans accedentally run into an alien ship and damage it, puting in motion a chain of events that may destroy the Earth. All in all it seems like a lot of interesting ideas. Unfortunitly interesting ideas, on their own, do not make a good book. Busby, the author, buries his gems in a flood of verbous writing and shallow sexuality. I would estimate that 40% of the book is made up of uninteresting stories of the various chacater's sexual past. Even when the story shift view-points to the aliens, a great deal of that section is taken up by lengthy description of their sexual habits. None of this is interesting. A good basic story is so sidetracked by the writer's obsession on sex that the book just isn't worth the time you put into it. This is the first time I've read a book and actually thought "were was the editor?". A terrible 310 page book may have been condensed down to a pretty good and focused 150 pages.

The Saga of Bran and Rissa Continues 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Their victory over the Imperial tyranny of United Energy and Trasport complete, Bran Tregare and Rissa Kerguelen set out to aid the Shrakken aliens in their war against the telepathic killers called the Tsa. But on route to battle, the Tsa attacked, and Bran and Rissa's scoutship crashed on the wilderness world of Shaarbant. Leaderless, their starship's crew fought the Tsa with an untested, time-twisting stardrive, while Bran, Rissa and their daughter Lisele faced an equally desperate struggle for survival on a perilous and primitive planet.

Rissa returns 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

After she and her husband, Tregare, overcome the corporate lords who had enslaved so much of Earth, it took them years even to start undoing the evils of that time. Then once the human wrongs are ended, or at least their end well under way, there remains one more wrong to right, the inhuman one. The alien Shrakken figured heavily in the freeing of Earth, even after their first envoy to Earth had been ruthlessly slaughtered and their technology stolen.

Rissa, Tregare, and their precocious tweenage daughter Lisele set out to return stranded Shrakken to their homeworld, and to offer advanced technology as a gift of friendship. But the Tsa have arrived, a telepathic species that attacks Shrakken worlds, destroying the minds of the inhabitants, and moving on. Our heroes fight a desperate defense against the mind-burners. Then the Tsa capture Lisele ...

Not to worry, it's a feel-good swashbuckler with strong family values - even if driving the pram into interstellar combat isn't most people's idea of proper child care. Busby offers a great space opera built around a strong female lead. It's good adventure, lightyears across even if not very deep.

A roller coaster ride of boredom and intrique 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My Review: In the begining of the book Marnie is sexually assaulted by her druggie mom's boyfriend and she happened to run away from his clutches during one of her mom's drug benges. The mother by the way is totally unware of the problem. Marnie goes to her father, who by the way isn't Captain of the ship yet, and he sneak here through the Hebegger gates. The Hebegger gates, one labeled "M" for mouth and the other labeled "T" for tush. Once you pass through the gate time speeds up. Marnie goes through gate "M" which leads to a starship that does space exploration and to top it off just by being on the ship for 2 months equals 4 earth years. During this time Marnie is discovered by the crew and the mother is on the hunt for her daughter, which lead her to the conclusion that her daughter must be on the starship Arrow with her ex-husband Clancey. Honestly, the book started great. I was curious and intriqued by the time I got to the middle of the book I started to lost interest. Anything that was about to happened was quickly short-lived! I think the author try to put the story into the views of a 12 yr old girl but it failed in my opinion. This book had alot of good ideas like the gates having to due with dimensions and that why time speeds up time. I feel this book is for the true hardcore sci-fi readers, but if you want some action this book doesn't have much as the summary in the back of the book suggested.

Editorial Review:

Captain Clancy Allaird, his desperate young daughter Marnie, and the crew of the starship Arrow set off on a seventy-five-light-year quest of high adventure, where they find challenge from terrorists, mutineers, and a fanatical conspiracy.

Role Model 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

FM Busby created Rissa... at times, I let myself believe that he created her specifically for me. She has been my role model for many years: strong, confident, yet compassionate. Breaking free of her past tramas and stretching out on wings powered by her own determination, Rissa is everything I want to be when I grow up. At 36, I STILL go back and read this series when I need to renew my sense of worth and confidence. Thank you, Mr. Busby!

Rissa Victorious 4 out of 5 stars.

"The Long View" concludes the saga of Rissa Kerguelen. The first two books in the trilogy set the stage for this one: the conquest of Earth. In those earlier books, we saw little-girl Rissa, torn from her family and raised no better than a slave in a corporate concentration camp. We saw her escape, befriend the powerful Hulzein dynasty, leave for the stars, and become co-leader of the rebel forces.

Now, she returns. It's been years of preparation - decades and lifetimes, if you take the "long view" of relativistic time dilation and suspended animation. But factors arose that Rissa's group could never have foreseen: a doomsday bomb, and a madwoman with its detonator always at hand.

For all that, this book and this series convey a family-based feel-goodism that are easy to enjoy. They remind me of Heinlein's happy communes, in ways, but with more swashbuckling and more of the hero[ine] with humble beginnings.
