Not my favorite AC, but still very good. 4 out of 5 stars.

This volume in the Astro City series (vol. 5?) was a little different than the previous volumes. While the Astro City series has always tried to portray its heroes and people in a realistic light, this book seemed to focus more on the people and what it's like to live in the world of Astro City. The heroes are still there, but they are in the background. The stories follow the regular people and how they live their lives. This happened once before in one of the previous volumes. The story focused on a newspaper editor and his first story about the Shirrak shark worshippers. But here, all but one is about everyday people. Newcomers is about hotel doorman, Pete Donacek. Where the Action Is is about comic book writer Sally Twinings. Great Expectations is about stuntman turned actor, Mitch Goodman. Shining Armor is about political aide, Irene Meriwether. Pastoral is about city girl Camilla spending the summer at her Uncle's farm. Knock Wood is about attorney Vince Oleck. Justice Systems is also about Vince Oleck and continues from where the previous story ended. Old Times is about retired superhero Dale Enright, aka Supersonic. Since the Fire is about former firefighter Arnie Prentice. Don't get me wrong. Every Astro City book is well worth the price. And while I appreciate the intent behind focusing on the real people, I do still like reading about the super heroes rather than the local heroes.

Editorial Review:

Eisner Award-winning writer Kurt Busiek (Astro City, Superman, Marvels) teams up with some of the best artists and writers in this collection of stand-alone stories from Conan. In "Helm," Busiek and Fabian Nicieza (X-Men, Buffy The Vampire Slayer) write and EC Comics legend John Severin draws the story of a certain very famous horned helm. Renowned comics and animation artist Bruce Timm (Batman The Animated Series, Justice League Unlimited) lends his styling to the darkly comic "Conan's Favorite Joke." Current Conan writer and Conan and the Songs of the Dead artist Timothy Truman takes pencil in hand as the Cimmerian's influence crosses generations in "Seeds of Empire" and "The Blood-Stained Crown." Eisner Award-winning Goon creator Eric Powell draws the poignant story of a young and unsung hero in "Storyteller," Dark Horse's centennial tribute to Conan creator Robert E. Howard. And classic Savage Sword of Conan artist Rafael Kayanan returns to the world of Hyboria with "In the Tower of Tara-Teth," a gritty adventure set during the Cimmerian's years as a mercenary and pirate.

Good story...Great Art! 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Imagine...A Conan book where are favorite Barbarian is no where to be seen...It's no joke, but is indeed what you get with Conan The Book of Thoth. This volume reprints the four issue series from Dark Horse comics and lifts the veil on Conan's arch-foe, the black wizard Thoth-Amon of Stygia. It's interesting to note that while Thoth may be considered Conan's greatest foe, he actually only appeared in just one story written by Conan creator Robert E. Howard, "The Phoenix on the Sword" which first appeared in Weird Tales in 1932. It was really in the Marvel Comics' series that Thoth-Amon would become Conan's greatest enemy.

Thoth's origins were always shrouded in mystery and Kurt Busiek, who has been writing Conan's adventures at Dark Horse, along with long-time comic scribe Len Wein, tell the story of his background. Now it's hard to imagine Thoth as a boy but that's exactly how they start the story. Thoth is a street urchin, stealing what he can to appease his abusive father. Fate shines on him one day when his friend Amon, saves the life of Kharantus, the High Priest of the Ibis. The benevolent priest invites the boy to become an Acolyte at the temple. Thoth sees his opportunity, killing his friend and assuming his identity.

Thoth now finds himself in a great power and is soon seeking out the dark arts and comes across scrolls referring to the ancient, and long destroyed city of Acheron, home to great wizards and great evil. Now here's where things get a bit dicey...Thoth mentions that Acheron was home to a thousand centuries of black magic and diabolism, an archaic tradition of evil." This comment is lifted nearly word for word from the Conan story "The Hour of the Dragon" which was uttered by the priest Orastes speaking about the resurrected Acheron wizard Xaltotun. I'm not even sure Howard knew what he was writing as a thousand centuries, or 100,000 years places Acheron about 85,000 years before the Pre-Cataclysmic era of King Kull.

Okay, I got a bit side-tracked on that detail. At any rate, Thoth eventually finds the Ring of Set, the serpent God which gives him incredible power to overthrow the priests of Ibis and usher in the era of Set as Stygia's primary deity. The story takes places over several years as we see Thoth grow both in stature and power as he weaves insidious plots to gain control of Stygia.

The story is somewhat on the slow-moving side. There's only a sliver of the kind of action you expect in the typical Conan story. This is a story about more than swordplay. It's about intrigue and an insatiable quest for power. The story humanizes Thoth and I'm not sure if that's really such a good thing or not. In some ways it diminishes his stature as perhaps the ultimate force for evil in Conan's time. Still, it was interesting to see this take on Thoth's history.

While I will give moderate approval to the story, the art of Kelley Jones gets an unquestionable standing ovation from me. Jones has always been one of my favorites for his angular figures and expressive eyes of his characters. Few artists use light and shadow as well as Jones does.

Very Good 4 out of 5 stars.

Though it's very long and in some parts poorly drawn, this compilation showing Kang's final stand is very well written. You find romance, laughing, thrilling, drama and a lot of action in it. And a lot of inactive avengers take part of the story as well, for the delight of fans who can see again Stingray, Black Knight and others.

An enjoyable What If? 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I had read this story when it first came out in comics. Arion, Lord of Atlantis shows Superman a nightmare, yet logical future which may come about by his continued interaction; or some might say interference with the affairs of mankind. That one story alone is worth the price of the book and in my opinion is one of the best Superman Stories ever written, which is not to say the rest are shabby.

Pick it up and enjoy a story where the world must struggle to the bitter end without a Superman. Chilling and enjoyable at the same time.

Introspection for Superman 4 out of 5 stars.

A common theme in superhero stories, especially since the advent of angst, is whether or not the protagonist is in fact beneficial for society, or heaven forbid, actually does more harm than good. This self examination and subsequent recriminations is endemic to all heroes, but arguably is most appropriate with Superman. Due to his alien status, he is constantly fighting an emotional and intellectual battle on two fronts, both from within due to his own thoughts and fears of isolation and loneliness, and from without, with Lex Luthor leading the parade with his jingoistic bleatings and obsessive paranoia directed toward him. Kurt Busiek's intricate script explores both areas; the first, involving his personal demons, occurs during an encounter with a fellow alien captured at birth and kept in seclusion for experimentation purposes. In spite of their initial combative predicament, the two form a mutual understanding of their kinship, inspiring Superman to ponder "What if this had happened to me?" The second element, regarding his efficacy or detrimental effect on Earth, is touched on in the last page, where the central theme is finally broached. Indeed this trade unfortunately does end where many begin. The premise that history requires down cycles to insure future prosperous ones, and that Superman is impeding this natural development due to his frequent interventions, is intriguing, although academicians and people who lived through various dark periods of history would probably disagree. The use of flash forward to show a desolate future, with Superman inferred as being the cause, is rather ineffective and overly lengthy; it takes the reader out of the ongoing narrative without laying the foundation or giving us cause for investing emotions into an obvious "what if" scenario. One thing is certain, Kurt definately provides the reader with a wordy script, and kudos to him for producing an enjoyable and thought provoking comic that actually takes more than ten minutes to read.

Busiek knows Avengers. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The Busiek/Perez combo for me is the quintessential Avengers creative team and in this collection they prove their prowess yet again.

Following the Ultron Unlimited story arc that features in Avengers Assemble 2 this volume sees a huge clash over the skies of New York guest staring many big marvel names a very interesting line-up change, Silver Claw leading the team back to her South American homeland and a very well executed crossover with the Thunderbolts featuring Count Nefaria. If you're a new fan of the current marvel product you owe it to yourself to pick up these beautiful volumes and get a look at some of the Avengers recent history. In fact, the Busiek/Perez run is the ideal starting spot as Busiek has a thorough knowledge of Avengers history and manages to fit in a great deal of it while telling these new tales.

Volume 3 continues the great presentation of the series and contains what I'd probably call the most consistently good issues of the first three volumes. Five stars.

actioned packed goodness... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If this is not the best volume of Avengers Assemble, it is certainly one of the best if you are interested in action. Clearly, the action in this collection is varied, and involving an extended cast of Marvel favorites from the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the X-Men, The Thunderbolts, the Shiar empire, Ego the living planet, the Silver Surfer, the Grim Reaper, Kang the Conqueror and Ultron to name a few...

Most of the stories of this volume involve multiple title crossovers, and few of the other series are included, or this would be a much larger volume. However, it would seem that the plot of these stories suffers little from the lack of crossover titles included, since these storylines have their conclusions in the Avengers books. It might have been nice, for the sake of completeness, to have the other titles included, but for whatever reason, that didn't happen. Still, I found the stories were long enough to grab your interest, and complete enough to be understood, and gratifying enough to include cameo or better roles from a myriad of characters.

This volume includes the reappearance of Hell Cat, which starts off down a seemingly hokey path, only to turn a much more dramatic conclusion. I was really stunned on this one, and perhaps this volume is worth the purchase for this one story.

The one downside to the stories is that they leave numerous "loose ends" hanging around, with not only the "bad guys" getting away, but mysterious plots and developments totally unexplained, and shelved until later. This is quite unsatisfying in a way.

Another potential turnoff is the change in artistry which seems to occur every other issue. The art is overall quite good in this volume, however, but it is a bit of a challenge to adapt to all the changes in style. And, there is a few unexplained changes in costume for iron man, wasp, and goliath/yellow jacket. The changes in costume for goliath into the yellow jacket makes the split hank pym story line even more confusing.

Overall, this volume was a delight to read. The ultron arc in this volume was not quite as good as in volume 3, surprisingly enough it proved that there is still more water in the Ultron well perhaps for a bit more time to come. This volume makes you miss the Avengers, as they used to be...

Powerful 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Squadron Supreme was Marvel's answer to the Justice League. After an incredible 12-issue mini-series (which is still available), this comic book was released as a follow-up to conclude the story line. This shorter graphic novel was incredibly powerful. The remaining members of the Squadron Supreme put their lives at stake to save their dying universe. It is an intense read. If you loved the Squadron Supreme, you must do everything you can to get your hands on this follow up story. I never cried so hard reading a comic book in my life! This is truly not to be missed.

Something you won't see on The Justice Leauge! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Easily one of the greatest storylines next to Avengers Forever and the Storyline of Final Fantasy VIII in my opinion of course. Only one week after the failed Utopia Project, The Squadron Supreme is visited by a foe greater than Ultimecia and Immortus combined...The Nth Man. No not that pathetic Ninja named John Doe. Having consumed seven whole realities Thomas Lightner finds himself in The Squadron's Universe: Earth-S and continues his mad quest of hunger. The Squadron and their greatest foes head into space to attack Lightner. However things don't go as they planned when Lightner vanquishes Professor Imam, Inertia and even a version of Overmind from the future with but a thought and a little light show here and there. This epic showcases on how The Squadron must face this "Crisis from Infinite Earths" on a "Zero Hour" of Destruction and the pain they must deal with as all whom they know and love fall dead around them. This Graphic Novel set the course for the storyline presented in Avengers vol.3 #5-6 and The Squadron Supreme/Avengers Annual of 1998.
