Editorial Review:

Sometimes no news is bad news.

It’s been twenty years since the end of the Cylon war. The twelve human colony worlds are rebuilding, and the Cylons . . . the Cylons have been just too quiet. They are nowhere to be found. The robotic race that tried to obliterate their creators has gone to parts unknown in deep space.

The aftermath of the war has created a new, illegal profession: scavenger. Tom Zarek is one, scouring the outer settlements for valuable Cylon technologies and artifacts and usually returning empty-handed. But now, he and the crew of the Cruiser Lightning have found the Omega Station, a scientific station shrouded in secrecy beyond the edge of charted space. This is it, the big score, except something is wrong…the base is still occupied, not by humans, but by Cylons!

The Battlestar Galactica, one of the oldest warships in the fleet, receives the Lightning’s distress call, a cryptic one-word message: “Cylons.” William Adama, newly promoted to second-in-command, is worried. Most of his crew are green, new recruits, not prepared for anything but the most routine missions. And, as Adama soon discovers, this mission is anything but routine. Omega is indeed full of Cylons, but also something much more disturbing . . .

Mixed feelings 3 out of 5 stars.

Ordinarily I enjoy what I read by Craig Shaw Gardner, but I think he just missed the mark with this one. The story idea is good, and the idea of Druids in Sunnydale is very interesting. I think, though, that Gardner is not quite as familiar with the show as he should be to write a novel about it. His vampires consistantly exhibit powers that other vamps in the Buffyverse do not have and there is no explanation for this (or none that satisfies). Characters do not speak or act anything like they do in the show.
One other thing that bugged me was the fact that the red herrings were obvious at several feet and there was virtually no suspense. I was quite aware of what was going on through much of the book and was getting frustrated that the characters were taking so long to figure it out.
Also, my usual complaint. Don't tell me, show me!

Basically, I'd love to see more from Mr. Gardner, but I'd recommend that he watch the series a bit more carefully first.

Editorial Review:

Old Magic, New Problem

The Hellmouth (a.k.a. Sunnydale, CA) has drawn vampires, witches, and other demons to its powerful vortex. Now it has also drawn the attention of an ancient set of Druids -- allies in Buffy Summers' battle against the Undead.

Clocked in Darkness, wrapped in mystery, the Druids descend on Sunnydale ready to perform new rituals to summon forth a new world order, free from the evil that shapes Buffy's nights.

But the Slayer's concerns are more immediate -- someone is stalking her friends. Cordelia, Xander, and Oz -- all are falling victim to this spell. And now it's up to Willow and Giles to find the cause, while Buffy stands between the Mouth of Hell and the New Dawn.

Delightful 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Suspended somewhere between the shallow-silly world of Xanth and the wry quirkiness of Discworld is the strange world of Ebenezum and his hapless apprentice Wuntvor.

Wuntvor is the apprentice of the famed magician Ebenezum (whose main vice is being somewhat greedy). But when a sinister demon, Guxx Unfufadoo, is conjured up -- the worst kind, a rhyming demon, whose power grows with every rhyme he utters. (Fortunately he's not too good at it) And Ebenezum manages to survive Guxx's attempt to kill him. But he soon discovers that Guxx has made him allergic to magic: whenever he's near magic, he starts sneezing uncontrollably.

After self-treatment fails (miserably) Ebenezum concludes that he can only be cured in Vushta, the City of Forbidden Delights. Wuntvor, being a typical teenage male, has no problems at all with this. But their way is fraught with peril -- much of it with silly dialogue, beautiful girls, and more than a few lunatics. Along the way they will encounter a singing-dancing dragon, a used-weapons dealer (who is also a demon), a mildly crazed warrior Hendrek with his club called Headbasher, Death in a game-show setting ("Now, Wuntvor, are you ready to double your lifespan?"), a cult that worships Plaugg the Fairly Magnificent, trial by custard, and demons trying to invade the world from the supernatural Netherhells.

As you can tell, this is not a particularly serious book. It reads like a series of loosely interconnected vignettes (because it was originally published that way) but somehow the episodic tendencies never bothered me. Every chapter is started with a hilarious quote from the Teachings of Ebenezum.
The humor ranges from the character oriented (Wuntvor's perpetually hormone-addled state) to the wry and funny (the hideous torment of aspirin commercials) to the low ("Neebekenezer's Syndrome of Universal Flatulence" and the chicken that... well, never mind).

The humor generally stems from the characters (Wuntvor's perpetually hormone-addled state) or the silly situations (Ebenezum being chased out by Grandmother) or the delightful dialogue ("What rhymes with silver?" "Orange!") such as Ebenezum critiquing Guxx's terrible rhymes. ("There is no justice in the cosmos. At least no poetic justice.")

The characters are hilarious: Ebenezum is the archetypical wizard, with a few secrets and flaws up his voluminous blue sleeve. Wuntvor is the character we see the world through, but he is as quirky as Ebenezum in his own realistic manner: He falls for every pretty girl nearby, looks forward to Vushta, and is a little too gangly and earnest for his own good. Supporting characters (with the exception of Snarks and Hendrek) are generally not developed as well, since they often vanish after a few chapters. This book is okay for most kids and all teens -- a few kisses between Wuntvor and his various love interests is about all that is objectionable.

It's fantastic that this book is back in print. A must-read for fans of fantasy and comedy.

Tightly written, well paced story 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

In Dark Mirror, Angel Investigations must face a group of demons capable of becoming duplicates of anyone they get close to -- complete with their personality and memories. The duplicates just happen to reflect their darker, angrier selves. And their duplicates are out to destroy them.

The book is well written and fast paced. The character portrayals are strong and the interrelationships are accurate for the timing of the book (clearly early in season 4).

Gardner does a good job of capturing the strained relationship between Wesley and Angel Investigations, the complex relationship between Wesley and Lilah and Conner's confusion about who he is and what (and who) he should believe.

The ending seems to wrap up quickly (...). But, really, that mirrors the format of a one hour television series, where all is neatly wrapped up in the last 10 minutes. It is, in essence, exactly what we expect and saying that gives away nothing of the plot!

I was a little unclear about how the characters knew how to put a final end to their duplicates (and I won't go into that as it does give something away). I'll just say that I didn't see that part explained -- it may have been edited out or I may just have missed it, as I did read the book in a hospital waiting room.

If you like Angel or Angel books, I'd recommend this book. Its exactly what it should be; a fast paced adventure, true to the characters and the story. Its sure to make for an enjoyable afternoon of reading.

Even if it takes an eternity, he will make amends...

THE SINCEREST FORM

In his two-plus centuries on Earth, Angel's seen his share of imitators: kindly, misguided people intrigued by the exotic business of being a P.I.; not-so-kindly misguided people drawn to the lure of the undead unlife. But so far he's not encountered a clone -- a true double.

Enter Angel, the Second. And Fred 2.0. And Wesley Redux....A steady parade of perfect doubles arrives at Angel Investigations, but they're not looking for help. They want the original humans (and vampire) dead. And if Angel, Lorne, and their friends can't band together to figure out where the clones are coming from, a murder spree that starts in their lobby might spread to the entire city. But how do you defeat someone who knows your every thought, your every battle plan, your darkest fear? How can Angel defeat himself?

A very dark but nicely done comic-book based on the film! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is much better than the movie itself, in my opinion. It's much more serious and sophisticated in a graphic novel format and the gothic mood is more captured in this way. And it also demonstrates quite elegant drawings of the beautiful, sexy Catwoman in her shiny sewn-together costume and the virile Batman in his handsome bat get-up with its long, sweeping cape. Their lithesome stunts and fierce struggles on the moonlit rooftops are artfully depicted in each panel as well. As for the Penguin himself, he provides a very colorful, circus-like flavor to the story with his kooky penguins and his gaudily-costumed associates. In addition, there are many grisly deaths and a much more tragic ending as well. In all, this film adaptation is quite a lovely little comic album to keep anywhere on your most favorite bookshelf!

Editorial Review:

Batman has vowed to rid Gotham City of the dastardly Penguin and his slinky confederate, Catwoman--but while the Caped Crusader is repulsed by his umbrella-wielding nemesis, he is also tantalized by the darkly seductive Catwoman. Movie tie-in.

One of the Best! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Okay, this book is one of my favorites. According to me the previous two reviews didn't explain much.
First off, Dragon Sleeping continues with Dragon Waking. The wizards are becoming desperate and are struggling and fighting even more with the dragon so close.
The neighbours are turning against each other and struggling merely for survival. More of them receive stones from the dragon and Nunn, a dark wizard, is as cunning as ever and continues to use and toy with everyone.
Nick's sword is changing the young boy and Nick is becoming unsure what to do.
In this book we learn more of Obar and his true intentions and how Mary Lou feels about Garo. We learn the deepest desires of the neighbours and we begin to question who the dragon is going to take next.
Will the neighbours all turn against each other or will they band together to be all they can be? What's to become of the wizards?
This book is not boring and I found it interesting and just as great as the last book. Usually in sequels we find that they destroy everything, but this book does not. It ties in perfectly with the rest of the trilogy.

Editorial Review:

In their unending struggle to control the ultimate power, wizard brothers Nunn and Ober turn neighbor against neighbor in the sleepy village of Chestnut Circle, a situation that is complicated when a destructive dragon attacks. Reprint. PW.

I suppose you'd have to have a certain sense of humor when reading this book (as with any of the other Wuntvor books). It's hilarious, it's intentioanlly cliche, and it's just so much fun to read. I wish it weren't out of print, or else I'd buy this for all my fun loving friends! =o)

Moderately funny, and very original, magic adventure 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Wishbringer is one of the Infocom books, loosely based on the Infocom games. Ignore that; it won't affect your enjoyment of the book.

The story is about a scam-artist who must save a Jeckyl-and-Hyde community, with the aid of some magical, but not entirely reliable or discreet, companions. Not as good as The Ballad of Wuntvor or the Ebenezum Trilogy, but an enjoyable light read.

A little slow at first, but then it's great! 4 out of 5 stars.

I read the book cause I'm a infocom game fan. The book is excellent once you get into it. Some parts are down right hilarious, others are filled to the brim with puns. So arm yourself with you Acme Kitchen Wonder, put on your Magic Glasses, and prepare to run from the Boot Patrol (just read the book already)

Dont bother 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I picked up this book with very high hopes. Since almost every other Spider-Man novel i've read were great, my expectations were to high for Wanted Dead or Alive. The plot is pretty lame at times, even darn right confusing. The Rhino shouldnt have even been brought into the story at all, since he served almost no pourpose to keep the action going, well, whatever little action you actually get to read. This is a poor excuse for a Spider-Man novel, it's collecting dust in my closet right now.

Editorial Review:

Attempting to stop a bank robbery on a crowded New York street, the amazing Spider-Man finds himself blamed for the accidental shooting of an innocent bystander. The newspapers--especially The Daily Bugle and its publisher, J. Jonah Jameson--have a field day with the incident, which makes the web-slinger the perfect target for mayoral candidate Brian Timilty. However, Timilty is secretly the pawn of Tyler Stewart, a wealthy businessman seeking to take over New York's crime syndicates. With Timilty in office and the mob under his control, Stewart will become the undisputed king of New York. To ensure his success, Stewart executes a plan guaranteed to keep the wall-crawling superhero from interfering with his grand designs: He frames Spider-Man for a grisly murder! Wanted by the police and forced into hiding, Spider-Man must find a way to clear his name. And that's when Electro and the Rhino--two of his deadliest foes--arrive on the scene to complicate matters.

Wonderful! Funny! Fantastic! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

In Vushta, city of a thousand forbidden pleasures, there is something wrong. Every wizard there now sneezes when near magic! They all cought this cold when trying to cure their fellow wizard, Ebenezum, greatest mage in the Westerm Kingdoms! It seems like another quest is in the offerings, for, in the meantime, the demons in the Neatherhells, after failing to conquer the surface world, have settled on something new, something more horrifing then the Grand Hoohah, (don't ask!) Conquest by comittee. So, boldly, Ebenezum's appentice, Wuntvor, must set off alone, to try to talk the great and horrifing ruler of the Eastern Kingdom, Mother Duck, into helping them. At first the bold lad is alone upon his quest, (all his companions from the last quest were too busy arguing who shoud go and who shouldn't come), which is exactly the way someone, or rather, something wants him. Death Itself appears to Wuntvor, and reveals that the lad is only the latest reincarnation of the Eternal Apprentice, forever destined to aid true heros in his bumbling, inept way, with the help of any number of magical companions. And since he is forever being reincarnated if he dies, he is forever beyound Death's grasp, (something that drives the specter wild) unless he's alone. Well, Wuntvor happens to be alone at that moment. But before Death can take him to his kingdom, several unexpected companions arive. First there is one of Wunt's 500 magical ferrets. (He conjured it with a magic hat.) Then Tap the Brownie arrives, just in time to scare Death off. Two deamons, Gruxx Unfufadoo, former enemy of Wunt and former Grand Hoohah (don't ask)! and Braxx, traveling Salesdemon join up. Then the vadville act of dasmel and dragon show up. There is also the Warrior Hendrek, and the truthtelling deamon Snarks, as well as a unicorn that longs after Wunt's lap. But they soon learn that Mother Duck has made a pact with the Neatherhells, and intends to take them all to the Storybook, (they would have prefered being baked into bread!) Is this the end? I really love this book, but had to get it from a Z-shop. I recommend it to everyone and everything with a sense of humor!
