Not what I expected... 5 out of 5 stars.

... from a WoW novel. It was stunning, really. Okay, maybe that isn't the right word. But if you're a diehard fan of the games like me, you'll find yourself very attached to the storylines, especially if you're an Orc and/or Draenei fan. Some of the scenes near the end of the novel had me very emotional as you watch a genocide, one of a race and another of an ancient culture.

I suggest this to every single WoW player out there who wants to start reading the books.

Editorial Review:

Though the young Warchief Thrall ended the demon curse that had plagued his people for generations, the orcs still wrestle with the sins of their bloody past. As the rampaging Horde, they waged a number of devastating wars against their perennial enemy -- the Alliance. Yet the rage and bloodlust that drove the orcs to destroy everything in their path nearly consumed them as well.

Long ago, on the idyllic world of Draenor, the noble orc clans lived in relative peace with their enigmatic neighbors, the draenei. But the nefarious agents of the Burning Legion had other plans for both of the unsuspecting races. The demon-lord Kil'jaeden set in motion a dark chain of events that would succeed not only in eradicating the draenei, but forging the orc clans into an single, unstoppable juggernaut of hatred and destruction.

A definite read for SC fans, even more for SC2 fans 5 out of 5 stars.

Book Two explains even further the history of the Protoss, and brings forth the legacy of Adun (which Starcraft players will recognize from 'En Taro Adun'). While the author never fully explains where this 'Ulrezaj' comes from, the story makes up for it with a good storyline and a climatic battle in the end.

Also, for people who are looking forward to Starcraft II, this book would be a good read since it's starting to hint at possible connections to the upcoming game. For anyone who's seen the Terran singleplayer trailer for SC2, you'll remember Zeratul mentioning something about a secret that threatens the whole universe. In "Shadow Hunters", the preserver Zamara inside Jake Ramsey also mentions a secret that will threaten all existence. Connection? Maybe. The book also gives a lot of insight on the character of Valerian Mengsk (son of Arcturus Mengsk), who is supposed to play a pivotal role in SC2.

Great story, specially for those who followed the series all these years.
If you were not completely satisfied with Endgame, you should try this.
I recommend you also get book number two, or you might end up frustated as I was, waiting for the next book arrive in order to to figure out how the story ends.
Very easy to read, I started and could not drop the book.

Editorial Review:

After seven long years in the Delta Quadrant, the crew of the "Starship Voyager"(TM) now confront the strangest world of all: home. For Admiral Kathryn Janeway and her stalwart officers, "Voyager"'s miraculous return brings new honors and responsibilities, reunions with long-lost loved ones, and for some, such as the Doctor and Seven of Nine, the challenge of forging new lives in a Federation that seems to hold little place for them. But even as Janeway and the others go their separate ways, pursuing new adventures and opportunities, a mysterious cybernetic plague strikes Earth, transforming innocent men, women, and children into an entirely new generation of Borg. Now the entire planet faces assimilation, and "Voyager" may be to blame

Fantastic, Exciting Read 5 out of 5 stars.

For those of you who loved the Voyager series, this book will not disappoint. As the crew adjusts to being back home, they must adjust to how Starfleet is acting. Not using the crews expertise at fighting the Borg even imprisoning those who "appear" to be the cause of the current Borg virus. Exciting all the way through, I could not put it down!

Editorial Review:

When an unstoppable Borg plague breaks out upon Earth, blame quickly falls on the newly returned crew of the Starship Voyage ™. Did Kathryn Janeway and the others unknowingly carry this insidious infection back with them? Many in Starfleet think so, and Seven of Nine, in particular, falls under a cloud of suspicion.

Now, with a little help from the Starship Enterprise ™, Admiral Janeway must reunite her crew in a desperate, last-ditch attempt to discover the true source of the contagion and save Earth itself from total assimilation into a voracious new Borg Collective.

But time is running out.

Has Voyager come home only to witness humanity's end?

The eagerly awaited continuation of OLD WOUNDS!

Captain Chakotay and his sister, Sekaya, are being held captive beneath the surface of Loran II by a Changeling -- an outcast Founder masquerading as Chakotay's second-in-command, Andrew Ellis. To Chakotay's horror, the Changeling gives the two prisoners over to the infamous Cardassian scientist Crell Moset, who plans to use Chakotay's Sky Spirit-enhanced DNA to create a super species that will bring him the fame and acceptance he craves.

Leaving Chakotay and Sekaya to their fate, the Changeling assumes Chakotay's image and infiltrates the Starship Voyager™, putting the entire crew at risk. Dr. Jarem Kaz and Lieutenant Harry Kim, increasingly suspicious of their captain's odd behavior, turn to Admiral Janeway and Lieutenant Commander Tom Paris for help. As Paris races to save Voyager from catastrophe, the real Chakotay must undertake a "Spirit Walk" that could set him and his sister free -- or lead to their ultimate destruction....

Much better than Homecoming 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Like the new Star Trek Titan novels, our other favourite First Officer gets a well-deserved promotion to Captain of USS Voyager. And brings along plenty of old and new interesting characters for the ride. We are introduced to Chakotay's sister Sekaya - and congratulations to whomever chose Sekaya's portrait on the book's front cover - yowsers! Apart from Chakotay, the spotlight is also focused on Dr. Jarem Kaz, the new Trill Chief Medical Officer, who has quite a few secrets of his own he needs to deal with. Also interesting and believable is the unresolved tension between the old Voyager crew and the veterans of the Dominion War. This kind of interpersonal conflict is much more believable than the conspiracy-fuelled actions of the previous Homecoming duology.

The first half- to three-quarters of the book is revisiting old characters and introducing new ones. Thats fine by me, as Christie Golden has a much more confident grasp of the characters by now. The result is a much better written book with more believable character motivations than what transpired in Homecoming. I still didn't enjoy these as much as the Star Trek Titan novels, but its still worth a read to revisit old friends. And I hope to see more adventures of the new Voyager in the future.

Editorial Review:

Captain Chakotay, one-time Maquis resistance fighter, is ready to prove himself as the new commanding officer of the Starship Voyager -- but sceptics back at Starfleet Command are watching him closely for any sign that he will revert to his renegade Maquis ways. His first mission as captain, to transport a group of displaced colonists back to their home planet of Loran II, seems easy enough: make sure the planet is safe for colonisation, unload the settlers, and head back to Earth. He even has an extra reason to enjoy the trip -- his sister Sekaya has joined the mission as a spiritual advisor to the gentle and peace-loving colonists. But on Loran II hey discover a mysterious storm, an ominously deserted settlement and a hidden threat from Chakotay's past that could destroy them all. Will his career as captain be over before it has even begun?

I went into this book loving the Dragonlance and Forgotten Realm offerings from TSR/WoTC. I have known about the Ravenloft novels for sometime but thought it was a completely different setting and world and while enjoying vampire stories I wasn't ready to plunge into another shared world...I had no idea that it tied into Forgotten Realms (FR)!
Wow! How awesome is that for a setting? All that goes bump in the night in the world of Forgotten Realms takes place here amongst the Dwarven warriors and wizardly elves and others? Yep! That surprised me and thrilled me beyond belief...what a great idea. Grant it there is this mysterious place called Barovia but its still part, somehow, of the world we know and love in FR.
Simply put: this book is outstanding and all the range of emotions were invoked. I felt fear, sadness, relief, disgust, sorrow, happiness, and regret...oh man what a roller coaster of a good time! The ending was not what I expected and was a little let down but then again its not my story but Christie Golden's. The book ends setting up for further stories so I am off to get my hands on them...that is until the sun comes up =)

As only Christie Golden can... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a fantastic trilogy! The third book was as engaging as the first two, I simply could not put it down. Not only were the Voyager regulars beautifully written, but the Romulan characters were excellent. Jekri Kaleh was absolutely captivating, and I came to really care what became of her.

I've heard several comments from various Star Trek fans who feel there were flaws with technobabble. And I also noticed the slip up where someone speaks to Paris on the bridge, when he had been missing since early on in the story. But to be completely honest, I don't see the big deal. When I saw Tom being addressed in that scene, I simply smiled to myself and went on. It didn't distract me from the story. Why? Because the story isn't really ABOUT the technobabble. It's about the hearts of these characters that I have come to love and adore so much.

Christie Golden has a way of capturing the essence of the Voyager characters that seems to elude most authors. She gives them depth and a realism that many Voyager novels lack. I recommend this book to anyone who loves Voyager not only for the space battles and futuristic technology, but for the heart and the character interaction.

Shadow of Heaven is a wonderful conclusion to a brilliant story. If you love Janeway's wry humor mixed with her deep devotion to her crew, or B'Elanna's Klingon temper toned down by her newly found sense of belonging and acceptance, and all the things that make each character unique ... if you love action, humor, and emotion all rolled up neatly into one story - this trilogy is for you.

Kudos to Christie Golden! Once again, she wrote a book that touched my heart, and took my mind off of reality for a short while. What a gift. Thank you, Christie!

Editorial Review:

The trilogy draws to a conclusion as "Voyager" races against time to gather a deadly contaminant. Whose side are the Romulans on? Where is the missing piece? And what surprising figure from the ship's past holds the key to the fate of the universe?

DS9: "Horn and Ivory": Kira's conclusion. 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

To be fair this is a rating of only one of the stories in the book. It is "Horn and Ivory", the conclusion of the DS9 Season 8 Relaunch book "Demons of Air and Darkness" (also book 4 of the Gateways septuplet).

I agree the marketing scheme of making dedicated readers buy the hardcover of this 7th book simply because it wraps up any (and every) one of the first 6 books is deceitful. Myself having read only the DS9 Gateway book as part of the relaunch, I was angered at the idea. Luckily, if you are reading this review, you no longer have to buy the hardcover, but can settle for the cheap paperback. Therefore, my review takes that into consideration.

I'll say that reading Book 4 and its conclusion in this book raised a few questions that I wonder as to whether or not they are solved/explained in the others Gateway books. I deem they probably are, and for that reason, perhaps buying this book simply for one book's conclusion rather than 6, is an incentive to go read the other books. Many have said the DS9 story is one of the best, and indeed I found it was excellent, but in time I may go back to read the other Gateway books. As it is, this is a review for "Horn and Ivory" by the marvelous deCandido.

At the conclusion of "Demons of Air and Darkness", Kira steps through a Gateway to be with what she believes are the Prophets. Where does it take her? Well of course it sends her back 30,000 years to a time of Bajor's past before the uniting of the world. At first, I did not realize that the entire sequel was only about Kira. By the time I had finished the short story, I was glad it was, because deCandido does the best job portraying Kira that I've read so far. You really start to understand her and feel what she feels. You get to understand Kira's nostalgia (of sorts) for the days of the Resistance, but more importantly you get to see her committed to being a good commander.

The plot. At first I was worried why we were in the old days, but slowly I got heavily involved into it and realized that where Kira had ended up had ties to her real life.
The book is about Kira rediscovering herself and understanding where she is in her life and coming to terms with what she's lost. At its base, the book asks: do you give up, or go on. The author certainly knows Kira well enough to answer the question for her, and I was glad watching her grow.

It was also wonderful getting to read about Bajor's fragile past before its unification and before the Prophets were worshipped by the majority of Bajor. Keith did an excellent job with this novel since to me it really didn't feel like a Trek novel or a DS9 novel, but more of a Medieval-type story with Kira thrust into it. Yet it works nicely somehow, and for that I give the book 4 stars. I couldn't give it 5 because though it does a good job, it deals only with Kira and none of the other DS9 crew. Only Garak's book, "A Stitch in Time" managed to pull off writing about one main DS9 character without becoming nostalgic for the other characters.

So there you have my brief review for what I consider to be Episode 6 of the DS9 Season 8 Relaunch novels. I read "Demons of Air and Darkness" in under two days, and immediately wanted to read the conclusion in this book. Thus my review is only for the DS9 Kira story, "Horn and Ivory" and not as a conclusion to the Gateway septuplet.

If you read "Demons of Air and Darkness" and tolerate or love Kira and want to know what happens to her at the end of that book, you'll want to read her conclusion. If you have not read "Demons of Air and Darkness", do not read "Horn and Ivory" as it does not stand well on its own (as it is not meant to!).

Editorial Review:

Created by the ancient Iconians, the Gateways offer instantaneous transport across unimaginable distances. Throughout the known galaxy, the sudden reactivation of the Gateways has destabilized interstellar relations -- and forced several of Starfleet's finest commanders to leap through separate Gateways into the unknown.

Captain James T. Kirk of Star Trek, The Original Series. Captain Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek: The Next Generation (R). Colonel Kira Nerys of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (R). Captain Kathryn Janeway of Star Trek: Voyager (R). Captains Calhoun and Shelby of Star Trek: New Frontier . Captain Nick Keller of Star Trek: New Earth.

All of these heroes have taken the ultimate gamble: hurling themselves through a Gateway without any forewarning of what lay beyond. Now each must face his or her own unique challenge, while struggling to find a way back to the ships and homes left behind....
