Absolutely intriguing story 5 out of 5 stars.

Goodness, this is still my favorite book ever since I bought it in '96. DS9 was not my favorite series until I read this book. LA Graf has truly written a masterpiece when it comes to character inteactions, plot twists (there's a KILLER one at the end... I'll let you read to find out what it is!), and grasp of 24th century thinking in the way of time travel and how everything works on a starship. I have reread this book over 10 times since I purchased it, and I find something new everytime I read it that sparks my imagination.

I know that this is the largest book in the Invasion! series, but I hope that more people will buy this series, Invasion!, and see what all the hype is about for this DS9 book! It's excellent, and you won't want to put it down! Happy reading!

Editorial Review:

Millenia ago, an apocalyptic battle was fought in the Alpha Quadrant. The losers were banished, but what became of the victors?

The Federation is threatened by this ancient mystery when a battered and broken version of the Defiant is found, frozen for five thousand years, in an icy cloud of cometary debris. Captain Sisko and the crew of Deep Space NineTM are summoned to answer the most baffling question of their lives: how and when will their ship be catapulted back through time to its destruction? And does its ancient death mean that one of the combatants in a primordial battle is poised now to storm the Alpha Quadrant? Only the wormhole holds the answer -- and the future of the Federation itself may depend on the secrets it conceals.

Excellent novelization. 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book captures the events in the premier episode of the television series, "Star Trek: Voyager" quite well, yet one never has the feeling that one is reading a recap. The story flows quite well, the characterizations are excellent, and I can't think of any scenes from the episode that are left out of the book, yet there are many instances in which the book adds to the story, and none of them seem out of place.

The only objection I have is the treatment of the holographic doctor; he is portrayed much too mechanically. I realize that he IS mechanical, but the series never failed to present him as having a personality, even in this premier episode. I feel that his mechanical aspect was overplayed in this book. Otherwise, this is an excellent telling of an excellent story, and necessary background for anyone planning on reading other "Voyager" novels.

Editorial Review:

Captain Kathryn Janeway and the crew of the "Starship VoyagerTM are transported by alien technology to the other side of the galaxy, years away from the Federation and everything they call home. There an enigmatic being known as the Caretaker kidnaps two crew members and transports them to a people known as the Ocampa. Captain Janeway must rescue her crew members, battle a hostile race called the Kazon-Ogla, and solve the mystery which surrounds the Caretaker, only to begin the fantastic voyage back to Earth.

Star Trek Envoy - A fairly interesting premise! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Some years ago, George Takei, a.k.a. Captain Hikaru Sulu took the opportunity to capitalize on his character becoming the captain of the USS Excelsior in "Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country." Star Trek "Envoy" a Captain Sulu adventure is one of those ventures.

Overall, the entire premise of the story and the all out production for this audio CD is well worth the price and the time. The only downside to the entire adventure is that in its attempt to create a realistic atmosphere, they use alien language in the background while Sulu listens to the universal translator. Thankfully, this isn't used too often in any of the episodes because it provides a major distraction to what's important, the story.

While it has been the rare L.A. Graf story that I've been enthralled with over the years, this story is quite good for this writing team.

The premise:

Captain Sulu is ordered away from the Excelsior in a shuttle craft on a mission to act as the Federation's envoy between two warring races, the Krikiki and the Den-Kai. Captain Sulu finds himself in a grave moral dilemma as he is to deliver a young Krikiki prince over to Den-Kai as a peace offering, but that prince will have to undergo isolation and physical mutilation.

What follows from there is a fairly interesting story that I would recommend to any and all fans of Star Trek fiction as it makes for a great hour or so while driving down the highway. {ssintrepid}

Editorial Review:

While on the U.S.S. "Excelsior, Captain Sulu receives top priority orders to proceed by shuttlecraft to Starbase Three. He is to act as the Federation's envoy to a historic peace ceremony between the Krikiki and the Den-Kai -- the two dominant, warring races in that sector. Sulu's role is to hand over a young Krikiki prince to the Den-Kai as a symbol of peace, but once Sulu learns of the physical hardships and isolated life that are to befall the prince, he is faced with one of the most difficult choices of his career: carry out his orders and protect another being's life only to see it taken away, or interfere and risk destroying the fragile peace, and violate the Prime Directive in the process.

My favorite book in the Lost Years series 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is my favorite in the Lost Years series for one simple reason: Dr. Leonard H. McCoy. Before other reviewers go to scoffing and rating this one unhelpful, let me explain why.

The scenes in which he treats a wounded Chekov for a broken arm show me so clearly what all doctors should strive for as an ideal: not just "bedside manner" which can be put on and taken off like a coat, but actual _compassion_ for their patients, that they left me breathless and dazed with wonder at the enormity of the revelation. L. A. Graf should be a lecturer (or is that lecturers?) at every medical internship school in the country. At the very least, this book should be required reading for all surgical students. (Probably a lttle unrealistic, I know, but where there is life, there is hope.)

Traitor Winds

It began with the lost years, the long-awaited story of what happened to Captain Kirk and the legendary crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise™ when their original five-year mission ended. Now, it is more than a year later, and Kirk and his crew have settled into their new, separate assignments.

But when Sulu and Chekov find themselves framed for murder and treason, the two officers are forced to go into hiding. As Admiral Kirk and Uhura frantically search for evidence to prove Sulu and Chekov innocent, they uncover evidence to prove Sulu and Chekov innocent, they uncover a plot that threatens the very foundations of Starfleet. The web of conspiracy is woven tighter as the real culprits and Federation agents close in on the fugitives. Unsure of whom to trust and with time running out, the former U.S.S. Enterprise shipmates must once again rely on each other to find the truth and prevent the Federation from facing utter destruction.

If you like Uhura, Chekov, or Sulu, READ THIS BOOK!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I love this book! It takes so many twists and turns you're not sure what's going to happen next! Excellent storytelling and wonderful character portrayal meld to create a book that is, above and beyond a shadow of a doubt, an awesome read. Uhura shows an aggressive, dominating side, and even if it's just an act, she's still as totally cool as ever. Of course, we can't forget Security Chief Chekov. He's more or less a hero, always willing to sacrifice himself if doing so will save his friends. As in many other L. A. Graf books, Chekov gets pretty beaten up, but he always seems to end up okay. Sulu plays his role too, even if he gets inslaved by the Dohlman of Elas. Any dedicated Trekker should definitely read this book.

Firestorm

When a convert Elasian mining operation interferes with a Federation geological expedition, Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise™ are dispatched to the planet Rakatan to mediate between the rival parties. The Elasian Dohman claims that the planet and its dilithium deposits are hers. But the geologists warn that if Rakatan Mons -- the galaxy's largest stratovolcano -- should erupt while the Elasians are mining its flanks, no amount of dilithium will save them.

While Lt. Commander Uhura and a landing party struggle to determine if the Dohlman's claim is true, Captain Kirk puts his ship on the line to keep the two ships from each other's throats. Soon, however, concerns over the planet's ownership are overshadowed by the arrival of a hostile Elasian armada and a cataclysmic volcanic explosion on the surface that threatens all parties with a deadly shower of destruction...

Timely Return To Form 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The final book in this time travel trilogy is another excellent effort from Graf who has restored my faith that people can still write exciting Star Trek adventures instead of the usual soap opera stuff that plagues much of the modern material. Here we have an interesting story that delves further into Kirk's past, including his relationship with his father, but never loses sight of the overall plot. How easy it would have been for this to become a "Next Generation" or "Voyager" style story with the characters "getting in touch with their feelings" and all "having a group hug" - but no, this is a serious story, and thankfully the author allows the characters to resolve the drama in an adult fashion. The overall conclusion to the Janus Gate side of the story back on Tlaoli IV is also brilliant, although a bit convoluted at times (*but then most time travel stories are !!!), and again I must praise the author for the way she cleverly brings it all together at the end. On a side note I must add my voice to the other readers who have complained about the synopsis that Pocket Books has provided for each of these novels. Only book two contained a synopsis that was remotely close to the actual story of the novel, while book one and three in fact were a load of garbage. Do the publishers actually read the books ?!! And if so who is responsible for the totally inaccurate synopsis writing ?!! Maybe the readers would like to start a letter writing campaign to Pocket Books to ensure that consumers are actually getting what they pay for when they buy a book instead of something completely different !!! Anyway at least this was one of the really worthwhile titles, and one of the better series of Star Trek books, regardless of the lousy synopsis on the back cover. A thoroughly enjoyable read which I would recommend to anyone, and I only hope Kevin Ryan's "Errand of Vengeance" trilogy will prove to be as good.

Editorial Review:

In the final part of the trilogy, we find that space and time have been altered by the Janus Gate. Members of the crew of the Enterprise have been thrown backward and forward through time, altering history, and then returning to the present many years older or younger. Mr Spock and Chief Engineer Scott have managed to avoid the effects of the Janus Gate and are trying desperately to reorganise the crew and to find a way to pass them through the gate to restore them to their proper ages. This task is made even more difficult when they realise that they must re-adjust history to ensure not only that everyone still exists in the present, but also that the Federation itself has a future.

Another enjoyable story from my favourite Trek authors 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Out of all the Star Trek authors it is the L A Graf team that I enjoy reading the most. There are 2 reasons for this; 1)the high level of action in most of their books, 2)the focus on Chekov, Sulu and Uhura and the friendship between the three and their relationship with the senior officers (Kirk etc). I have enjoyed all of L A Graf's novels and this one is probably my favourite as it has heaps of drama and action and a pretty good plot. I certainly think the authors books are not to all Trek fans taste as they don't fous on the three traditional leads and many fans may see this as off-putting, however, I love the use and development of these characters and am always looking for new books to explore the experiences of the three junior officers.

Death Count is action heavy as mentioned with a fast-paced plot and some nasty moments for Chekov, who always does get into all sorts of mishaps in the novels. The authors obviously like putting Chekov in these dangerous situations and seeing how the stoic Russian comes through (always heroically but with a lot of angst along the way). Bring 'em on guys!

Editorial Review:

The disappearance of Andorian scientific genius Muav Haslev fuels tensions between the Orions and Andorians -- tensions that come dangerously close to full scale war. Captain Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise™ are called to Starbase Sigma 1, located on the edge of Andorian-Orion space, to patrol the sector as a deterrent to hostilities.

On arrival, the crew encounters an inexplicable series of events, beginning with missing equipment and shipboard malfunctions. After a deadly transporter accident, Kirk suspects sabotage -- suspicions that are confirmed by the mysterious murders of three Federation officials. Now, Kirk and crew must put together the fragmented pieces of the puzzle, before the Starship Enterprise faces destruction and the galaxy faces interplanetary war.
