The Story of Peter Pan after he grew up. 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I thought this book was wonderful. Not only would Disney himslef be pleased but the original author of the Peter Pan books would also be pleased.

It is also classic Brooks. Filled with his enriched details and his way of writing that draws the reader into the book.

I have read almost all of the books that Brooks has written, including all of the Shannara books and the Landover series.

He is a wonderful writer and is able in his own way to make the reading of a book not only enjoyable but also very stimulating.

His way of bringing the reader into the novel is so wonderful that you can not put the novel down.

Brooks stayed true to the Peter Pan story and offered us a look at what Peter Pan might have been like had he actually grown up.

For a "What If" book, I give this book, not a 5 star rating but a 10 star rating.

A must-read. 5 out of 5 stars.

Granted, this book is a novelization of a movie, and a very faithful one at that, so much of the credit goes to the makers of the movie rather than to Brooks, but he does succeed in taking a marvelous story and telling it wonderfully, fully capturing the spirit of the story with his tone, as well as the events in it.

And a wonderful story it is, too. A superb sequel to the original Peter Pan story, answering the question "What would Peter be like if he ever DID grow up?" in a very plausible, indisputable way. Further, it is a perfect primer on how NOT to be a father, and what effects it can have on the children of someone who's falling down on the job, as well as showing a good example of how to do it right for comparison. Additionally, it is, like the original Peter Pan, an excellent story of the magic of childhood, but this one discusses how an adult can (and indeed MUST, if they want to avoid becoming unbearable) hold on to some of that magic, even while growing up and becoming responsible. And that sometimes, even people who HAVE lost that magic still don't learn how to be particularly responsible.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is truly wonderful; do yourself a favor, and track down a copy. It will be worth the effort. Then settle in for a good evening's read. You won't regret it.

This book is good, but the series is not over..... 3 out of 5 stars.

This book is similiar to the first of the series book, except the hero, Howard Bell ruins his flying machine, Yam-Yosh changes sexes, Howard goes to earth to find theses weird "carrier" aliens, and a mysterious woman has blocked his acess back to earth. That about wraps it up in a nut-shell. Note: it is very hard to find this book. You may wish to look for it ASAP as it becomes increasingly harder to find. Good Reading! Also, the author was supposed to write another book in the series called, "World of the Night Wind", but has never printed it. This is strange as it is advertised in the back of this book.

Geary said he's working on it... 5 out of 5 stars.

I found Geary Gravel's e-mail address and wrote him about the rest of the series. He said he's got a full schedule, but he's writing when he can find the time. I personally can't wait for the next book, since I've already read the first two about 10 times! I love these books!

How "completed" does a series need to be, FCOL*? 5 out of 5 stars.

*For crying out loud.
The first Geary Gravel book I read was The Pathfinders: The Pathfinders, featuring a delightful teenage heroine, Ai.
The present book, The Return of the Breakneck Boys, and its prequel, A Key for the Nonesuch A Key for the Nonesuch: (#1) (War of the Fading Worlds Bk 1) seem to be earlier works, whose main protagonist the author seems to identify with.
Howard Bell is a writer and fix-it man who finds himself transported into the middle of a no-holds-barred tournament between a host of armed militias, in a collection of worlds organized by vague menacing figures, called The Keyholders. There is a very limited amount of blood-and-guts, but the majority of the action devolves on creative problem-solving by our boy Howard.
Howard has made friends with some delicious characters, including the beautiful Alaiya, a fierce fighter who has taken our hero under her wing, and in this second book, Howard returns to Boston with Alaiya, to try and understand what brought him into this adventure to begin with.
There are a few interesting plot twists, and more interestingly, Howard and Alaiya begin to understand each other a little better--something we can all feel good about.
The hue and cry for a conclusion is understandable, since we never get a denoument with the shadowy Keyholders, though we do meet up with a Traveler and a Slake or two. Mr Gravel does not strike me as one who is driven to write--at least, not one driven to complete a series! Romantically, there is enough closure. I'm sure if a suitable final episode comes to Mr Geary's mind, we will see it, if not in print, at least on the Web!
Here's my suggestion: write a brief ending; it can be easily accomplished in less than a hundred pages. Then publish all three books as a single novel: The Breakneck Boys Bite Back! Bye Bye!

Pilots, I see you! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is the story of a 15-year-old girl Ai who was born with a rare gift that will enable her to pilot faster-than-light ships after suitable training. Unfortunately, she has a recurrent blindness problem for which she must get help from a family friend. (Where is her family?) We follow her off the planet on which she has lived for many years, on her interesting journey to get help.

This is one independent kid, and a funny one. On the way we meet wonderful, unusual, caring people, characters that shine off the page. It is a whimsical book, with wonderful insight into the adult perspective on the world of young people such as Ai. Young people will love the book because of Ai, but adults will love the book too, because of how G.G. can remind us of young folks we know whose beauty and eccentricities seem distilled into Ai so perfectly. The single-mindedness and tunnel-vision, the romanticism, the warm-heartedness and the generosity and surprising protectiveness that Ai shows, the resilience, the excitement, all this reminds us of the best that youth has to offer.

There are wonderful descriptions of life forms very strange to us, that inhabit a world that is stranger than most. There are characters that anyone who lived through the sixties would recognize, even in the distant future! Then, too there are incredibly comic episodes that describe telepaths struggling to understand regular people--just let me say, don't try to read this one while you're proctoring a test :) To top it all, there is a cameo appearance of the author as well. However whimsical it is, though, it is a satisfying, action-filled story.

This is a delightful book that stands alone. [Added 2008/9/26: this book is a sequel to The Alchemists, and we learn that Ai is in fact a child created by some of the central characters in that book, and brought up by some others, also in that book.]

Entertaining and funny. Charaters are belivable and modern. 4 out of 5 stars.

I will warn you that not only are they out of print. But he has yet to finnish the series. I rate this as two of the better books I have read and in a time when finding a good story in the sci-fi section is like finding Jimmy Hoffa that is saying a lot. Geary Gravels sence of humor rates with Harry Harrisons and he like to put his charaters in worlds were they can compare how narrow minded people can be.

Very interesting environment for Sci-Fi novel. 4 out of 5 stars.

It is based on an ordinary guy who finds the way to leave the earth with a key that he finds in the mens room. It is really some complex machine that opens portals between worlds, but he doesn't know that. He meets interesting characters and they decide to unite to defeat the keyholders, the people who originally only had the keys. Very imaginative worlds and realistic characters.

Good series... if he finishes it! 4 out of 5 stars.

His writing style is good, and the story layout reminds me the way Jack Chalker and Gordon Dickson write their stories. It a sci-fi book, with the unsure hero, the female warrier, and lots of aliens. I wish he would finish this series, as the author keeps you in the dark about the keyholders at the end of the book.
