Great! 5 out of 5 stars.

H. Beam Piper (1904-64) was one of the premier science-fiction authors of the 1960s, and should rightly be considered one of the all-time greats in that field. Among the wonderful books that Mr. Piper published during his all-too-short career was Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen. In that book, a Pennsylvania State Trooper name Calvin Morrison is accidentally lifted out of his own space-time continuum, and deposited on a parallel Earth, where some of the Aryans went east, across the Pacific and into North America. Dropped into the midst of a war of conquest, directed by a religion that holds a monopoly on gunpowder, Calvin must use his knowledge of military history to save himself and his new friends.

In this 1985 sequel, Piper fans John F. Carr and Roland Green take us back to the world of Lord Kalvan. Having saved his new nation of Hos-Hastigos from destruction only last year, Calvin Morrison (now Lord Kalvan) now finds a new campaigning season upon him. But, the House of Styphon is not about to see this new force put an end to their gunpowder wealth and authority. And now, Kalvan must prepare to meet an even greater threat, and once more use his knowledge of military history to save a seemingly impossible situation.

Now, I am a massive H. Beam Piper fan, so I went into this book with a little trepidation. I mean, can anyone write a book in Piper's universe with anything like the right feel to it? Well, in fact this is an excellent book - well written and a worthy sequel to the original. All of the characters are here, but they have grown and changed, just like you would expect real people to do. The action is almost non-stop with some excellent battle scenes and tons of action and adventure.

So, if you are a fan of H. Beam Piper, or just his Lord Kalvan story, then you should get this book. It's great.

Also, if you are a fan of alternate-reality science fiction, then this book is something you should consider - but definitely read Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen first.

Green delivers good, solid fun. 4 out of 5 stars.

Good characters, well developed intrigues and flashes of blood, sorcery and rampaging creatures. I'll definitely join Green for another Conan adventure.

A poorly constructed Conan book 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The writing is rather fun and lively with wit and good character development. You are easily sympathetic to the characters of the book. But plots holes take away some of the joy here. Something called the "Living Wind" features prominently in the book, isn't explained, shows up in the last two pages as a monster and is easily destroyed by a shaman leaving one to think "so what?!" The "god men" are never fully evolved, vague and almost irrelevent. Also, it takes a good half the book to get down to what it's about. Much too much time is spent with Conan roaming some tunnels. An average work.

Editorial Review:

Fleeing the sorcerous destruction of a long-lost city, Conan fights side-by-side with Valeria of the Red Brotherhood, that notorious and voluptuous she-pirate. Pursued by deadly spies and assassins, the Cimmerian and Valeria find themselves caught squarely in the front ranks of a bloody and savage war. But greater peril lurks in the shadow of a vast and forbidding mountain, where the Spirit Speaker wage occult battle with God-Men, who can read the future--and summon a Living Wind that consumes the soul even as it destroys the flesh.Even a sword powered by barbarian might is of little use against spirits, much less against great beings of the elder dark, but the final struggle for survival will come down ton...Conan and the Gods of the Mountain

The Worst Dragonlance Book (so far) 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Let me start by saying that I am an avid Dragonlance reader, having read just a little over 100 DL books to date.
Yet I find myself in the sad obligation of warning any potential buyers that this book is awful.
Where Knights of the Crown was a relatively good book, this time I was simply forcing myself to keep reading this dreadful thing until I just couldn't do that to myself anymore.

Why is it so bad? How can you describe a bad meal? The best I can say is that the author takes a different approach this time by constantly giving you a peek at what's on the characters minds; I know this may sound interesting, but in this book, it simply doesn't work. Also, the story just keeps dragging along to the point where you wish the fiery mountain would divert itself from Istar and just fell on these caracters' heads for the good of Krynn.

Looking for good DragonLance? Please let me help:
1) AVOID THIS BOOK.
2) If you're a newbie, you must read Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends before anything else. Then follow it up with Dragons of Summer Flame and then start with the War of Souls.
3) If you've already been to Krynn before, then may I suggest the Soulforge and Brothers in Arms... Done that? Then pick up The Doom Brigade and Draconian Measures (all 4 of these are brilliant!).
4) But if you're a REAL DL nut, then find Elven Nations Trilogy and Dwarven Nations Trilogy. Those books, although rare, are excellent!

I hope this helps...

Editorial Review:

The greatest order of chivalry in the history of Krynn.

After a knight has achieved the Order of the Crown, he must then begin his training in the virtues of courage and heroism in order to achieve the Order of the Sword.

This is the second tale of Sir Pirvan the Wayward, whose reluctant and inauspicious beginnings bore few clues to his potential as a Knight of the Sword or as a Knight of the Crown, nor as a mentor for another similarly dubious prospect for Krynn's greatest order of chivalry.

Roland J. Green is the author of the Starcruiser Shenandoah and Wandor series and numerous Conan novels, and is coauthor (with Jerr Pournelle) of the Jannisaries series.

The Warriors series details the exploits of the heroes and villains of the War of the Lance.

Not Bad, worth the expense 3 out of 5 stars.

If you have read the first to book, go ahead and buy this one. The story of Pervin is okay. This is not an unique story. it won't leave you astounded at Mr. Green's writing ability, but I don't believe you will feel you have wasted your money either.

Editorial Review:

The Knights of Solamnia were the greatest order of chivalry in the history of Krynn.

After a knight has achieved the Order of the Crown and the Order of the Sword, he must then begin his training in the virtues of wisdom and justice in order to achieve the Order of the Rose, the highest of all orders.

This is the third tale of Sir Pirvan the Wayward, whose reluctant and inauspicious beginnings bore few clues to his potential as a knight of the highest order. In a time when others of Solamnia had become corrupt and self-serving, Sir Pirvan maintained the dignity of the Order, walking the fine line between personal codes of honor and loyalty, and diplomacy and duty.

Roland J. Green is the author of the Starcruiser Shenandoah and Wandor series and numerous Conan novels, and is coauthor (with Jerr Pournelle) of the Jannisaries series.

The Warriors series details the exploits of the heroes and villains of the War of the Lance.

Really good, much better than the first three....... 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

After reading the first thre Knights books, I was not really looking forward to reading this book. But even after reading the first hundred pages, I knew it was much better than the others. It certainly described a lot about krynn and not just Istar like the other books, and was a really good book. I would recomend it to any reader.

Editorial Review:

The heroic conclusion to the tale of Sir Pirvan the Wayward!

Despite his humble beginnings, Sir Pirvan has managed to ascend to the highest orders of the knights of Solamnia. Along the way, he has become known as the founder of an obscure group of knights whose own dubious pasts have helped to dub them the Wayward Knights. On the verge of a well-deserved retirement, Sir Pirvan once again answers the call of duty and the only allies he can rely on now are the Wayward Knights he himself recruited so many years ago.

Roland J. Green is the author of the Starcruiser Shenandoah and Wandor series and numerous Conan novels, and is coauthor (with Jerr Pournelle) of the Jannisaries series.

not the best but not the worst 3 out of 5 stars.

It took a while for this tale to get rolling. It was heavily mixed with both a slow story line and intriguing situations. This was a thin story, however it was not a total waste of time. This one belongs in the middle of the pile. Not Green's best. It left me wondering.

Editorial Review:

Few places are as desolate as the Thanza Mountains on the border of Nemedia and Aqilonia. few area are so remote, so dangerous, or so inaccessible...which is why Conan chose these mountains as the perfect spot in the world for Conan to be.

Unfortunately, it is the single worst spot in the world for Conan to be.

Bandits and sorcerers--and worse--inhabit this lonely realm. Worst of all, it is the home of the Soul of Thanza. He who possesses the Soul will become the Death Lord--a post unfilled for many thousands of years. If the Death Lord should come into his full power, mountains will move, seas will be pushed back, the earth itself will shiver, and dead men will rise to fight again. No army of puny humans will be able to stand against the Death lord. Only one man would even dare to try--Conan the Cimmerian!

Swashbuckling Sword&Sorcery 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

A fast-moving Sword&Sorcery adventure that, chronologically, falls between "Queen of the Black Coast" and "The Vale of Lost Women" (both from "Conan of Cimmeria"). The plot, not being bogged down with either gorgeous or gory detail, and also interspersed with subtle humor, almost made this a Conan "Lite". The ease with which the Cimmerian extricates himself from one impossible situation after another makes the story line somewhat simplistic, although the flash-backs and flash-forwards do add some otherwise-needed depth. This is escapist fun nearly at its best!

Editorial Review:

No son of Cimmeria ever spent much time mourning what was gone forever...but Conan has never before lost a woman such as Belit, the fierce pirate queen. So great is his grief that the mighty barbarian disappears into the wild green depths of the Black Coast. But Conan cannot hide himself from an adventure for long!

Along with a fearsome band of Bamula tribesman, Conan is transported by the Demon's Gate to the distant Pictish Wilderness, where he must lead the Bamula warriors against warring clans of savage Picts, a deadly living statue, and a powerful sorcerer bent on revenge!

The Nadir of the Conan Series 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This books shows the latter-day Conan series at its lowest ebb, with Green writing almost on auto-pilot. I don't even think he knows what's going on in the story, and I certainly don't care.

Editorial Review:

Conan the Cimmerian must venture into the nightmare world of the dead to retrieve the Silver Lotus, a powerful weapon that can undo the the dreaded incantation that holds the city of Queen Rufia under the spell of the undead witch Zeriti. Original.

a very short book, but damn good 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

ISBN 0-441-38294-0 Ace Books first printing Nov 1982. A large format book, unusual in the 1980's with illustrations, and large print. Why they didn't just combine this book with Storms of Victory (Janissares 3) I have no idea, because it was 1/2 of the original book. Easy logical progression of the original. Rick Galloway and his men have their hands full -changing weather patterns, growing madweed, spreading technology, revolting nobles, reuniting Rome and preparing to survive the nuclear winter if he succeeds.

The story continues 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Rick Galloway and his band of mercenaries have been stranded on a secret planet by space aliens who want them to produce a crop of intoxicating drugs. In order to achieve this goal, however, Galloway and his men must bring order to the chaotic mix of human cultures they find surrounding them. By carefully building alliances, Galloway begins to transform the planet's social, political and military landscape. However, his efforts are hampered by the changing climate and the resulting mass migrations. Galloway struggles to improve the lives of the people he rules, always mindful that any progress he promotes increases the chances that the aliens will bomb the planet back to the stone age.

While not as well written as the first book, this follow up does flesh out the varied cultures on the planet Tran, and shows the continuing impact of the introduction of advanced technical knowledge in a low technology culture. The military and political implications prove to be challenging, but perhaps not as bad as the social impact. While the first book could have stood on its own, this one ends abruptly, without any resolution, and is clearly intended to be read as part of a series.

Friends of mine claim that the Dragonlance series is extremely addicting. I think that I started with the wrong series for addiction. This was a good story, but the many inconsistencies within the story and the predictability were a little dissappointing. Not a terrific story, but for the price of a paperback, you could definitely choose worse. Check for it at the library first though.
