Hotter than Hell...... 5 out of 5 stars.

Tanya Huff- "Music Hath Charms"- A bit confusing and not interesting in the least.

Marjorie Liu "Minotaur in Stone"- Slow start and rocky middle. The story is a bit to romancey for me. The usage of Greek mythology is the redeeming factor that made this story a bit interesting. The sex was ok, just a bit weird though, being that she was having sex with a creature that has the head of a bull and the body of a man.

Cheyenne McCray- "Demon Lover"- Exquisite story! Extremely sexy. Cheyenne really knows how to get you to connect with the characters and care for them. This story is about an incubus who falls in love. I'll stop there so I won't give anything away. The sex was hot and sensual. The scenes have a lot of sexual tention in them. No wam-bam here. This is the first time I've read anything thing from this author. Her story was so compelling that I will definitely check out her others books.

L.A. Banks- "Equinox" Just about as perfect a story as you are going to get. The story has a lot of subtle humor that I loved. I also loved the contrast between old times and modern times. I love how different cultures were used. Definitely something different from the norm.

Susan Krinard- "Ride A Dark Horse" Not really sure what to say about this one. It was mediocre at best. It's about dreams, a women, a horse, and a man.

Keri Arthur- "To Die For" Extremely intriguing and sexy. Keri sure knows how to tell a story. This story was about two paranormal agents. One a werewolf, the other a were shifter. The assignment they are given thrust them into more than danger. This story had it all; mystery, action, sexual tension and great sex. I have not read any of Keri's books but I definitely plan to pick one up in the near future.

Heidi Betts- "Curse of the Dragon Tears" This story was predictable but was still extremely interesting. Laura is on a quest that brings her to Scotland, land of her foremothers. She is on a quest to find the man, Dougal MacKay, her great-grandmother cursed 100 years ago. This was a great little story and will not disappoint.

Lilith Saintcrow- "Brother's Keeper" This is the first story that I have really liked from Lilith since the Dante Valentine series. Lilith always has great plots but for some reason her Jill Kismet drags out every moment and emotion. In this story Lilith delivers! I have always wanted Lilith to delve more into the sex-witches from the Dante Valentine series and couldn't be more thrilled with this terrific story. Hopefully we will hear more from Selene and Nokolai in the near future.

Susan Sizemore & Denise Little "(Like A) Virgin of the Spring" Just couldn't hold my interest.

Carrie Vaughn- "Life is the Teacher" Entrancing story. Disappointingly short because I wanted a lot more. Emma's a new vampire that experiences her first real feed.

Linda Winstead Jones- "Moonlight Becomes You" Charming little story. Claire suspects her next door neighbor of being a vampire. Little does she know he has his own secret suspicions for her as well.

Kim Harrison- "Dirty Magic" The return of Mia the banshee. A couple things have changed for Mia since we last heard about in her "Dates From Hell". Mia is now a mother of a beautiful daughter, has a husband and a lover......or so we think. This short story is full of twist. I didn't even see the end coming. Needless to say, I would love to see more of Mia in the near future.

I gave this book review 5-stars because the good stories more than make up for the few dull stories.

Editorial Review:

LEAP INTO THE FUTURE, AND SHOOT BACK TO THE PAST

H. G. Wells’s seminal short story “The Time Machine,” published in 1895, provided the springboard for modern science fiction’s time travel explosion. Responding to their own fascination with the subject, the greatest visionary writers of the twentieth century penned some of their finest stories. Here are eighteen of the most exciting tales ever told, including

“Time’s Arrow” In Arthur C. Clarke’s classic, two brilliant physicists finally crack the mystery of time travel–with appalling consequences.

“Death Ship” Richard Matheson, author of Somewhere in Time, unveils a chilling scenario concerning three astronauts who stumble upon the conundrum of past and future.

“A Sound of Thunder” Ray Bradbury’s haunting vision of modern man gone dinosaur hunting poses daunting questions about destiny and consequences.

“Yesterday was Monday” If all the world’s a stage, Theodore Sturgeon’s compelling tale follows the odyssey of an ordinary joe who winds up backstage.

“Rainbird” R.A. Lafferty reflects on what might have been in this brainteaser about an inventor so brilliant that he invents himself right out of existence.

“Timetipping” What if everyone time-traveled except you? Jack Dann provides some surprising answers in this literary gem.

. . . as well as stories by Poul Anderson • L. Sprague de Camp • Jack Finney • Joe Haldeman • John Kessel • Nancy Kress • Henry Kuttner • Ursula K. Le Guin • Larry Niven • Charles Sheffield • Robert Silverberg • Connie Willis

By turns frightening, puzzling, and fantastic, these stories engage us in situations that may one day break free of the bonds of fantasy . . . to enter the realm of the future: our future.

This must be a mistake... 4 out of 5 stars.

Yes, the book is out of print, but when I ordered it, the page said that it was still available, and I received it in 2 days. Hmmm... There's good and bad to this collection of 21 stories of nuclear devastation. *Bad* - Walter M. Miller's lengthy, rambling, and ultimately pointless foreword and story introductions, and the abundance of typos (did anyone proofread this?). *Good* - The selection of works. Bradbury, Ellison, Clarke, Zelazny, Pangborn, and many others. Plus, it includes one of my personal favorites, "By the Waters of Babylon" by Steven Vincent Benet. The cover is intriguing, as well... looks like Stanislaw Fernandes?

Editorial Review:

In Beyond Armageddon, the distinguished science fiction writer Walter M. Miller Jr. (1923–96) and the famed anthologist Martin H. Greenberg have together collected stories that address one of the most challenging themes of imaginative fiction: the nature of life after nuclear war. The twenty-one stories in this collection, by masters such as Arthur C. Clarke, Poul Anderson, Ray Bradbury, J. G. Ballard, Robert Sheckley, Roger Zelazny, and Harlan Ellison, explore a variety of possibilities of “life after.” These richly imagined stories offer glimpses into a future no reader will soon forget. Miller’s incisive introduction and a thought-provoking and irreverent commentary are included. New to this Bison Books edition is a postscript to the introduction provided by Martin H. Greenberg.

What a great quick read! 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I picked up this book when I needed a break from textbooks and was extremely pleased. The collection of shorts are very good, with a couple that stand out as being absolutely wonderful. Here are my favorites:

To start off with, Battle of Wits by Mickey Zucker Reichert is a story about a character taking over the story. I've always wanted to see a story like this, and Reichert doesn't disappoint.

Goblin Lullaby by Jim C. Hines tells a story mocking the typical "quest" from the point of a overworked Goblin mother.

The Murder of Mr. Wolf by Josepha Sherman is a melding of fantasy and detective done in such a smooth way that is fits perfectly in this book and is a great tongue-and-cheek nod to the world of fantasy.

And my absolute favorite is Food Fight by Alan Dean Foster. You just have to love a short that starts off with the line, "My coffee keeps insulting me".

If you're looking for a quick, fun, fantasy read, look no further. This one is guaranteed to please.

So good it's magic... 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Wizards, Inc is one of the latest in Daw's long litany of anthologies. As always, there is a theme, and the theme is people using magic to earn their money. Fifteen tales are presented for the reader's pleasure, and it is a pleasure to read most of these stories. But before I get to deep into my rants and raves, allow me to list all the stories and authors represented here. (If you don't care, just skip to the next paragraph, or if you have a favorite author you're trying to find, read away)

**Jamaica by Orson Scott Card **Audition by Steve Perry **Back Door Magic by Phaedra M. Weldon **Occupational Hazard by Mike Resnick **Ties That Bind by Annie Reed **Hostile Takeover by Nina Kiriki Hoffman **A Different Way into the Life by Jay Lake **Disaster Relief by Kristine Kathryn Rusch **KidPro by Laura Anne Gilman **Stocks and Bondage by Esther M. Friesner **The Keeper of the Morals by Dean Wesley Smith **Cosmic Balances Inc. by Kristine Grayson **Theobroma by Diane Duane **Chocolate Alchemy by Lisa Silverhorne & **No Rest for the Wicked by Michael A Stackpole

I have read hundreds of anthologies and as usual some stories are better in this than others. Chocolate Alchemy by Lisa Silverhorne was delicious, fun, and made me smile, and Jamaica by Orson Scott Card proves once again why Card is a master of his craft. The reason this anthology gets a five star rating is almost all the stories are good, solid page turning stories, each with their own humor, or twists and turns that leave you wanting more. This is one of the most solid collections Daw has complied in a long time. Are all the stories good? No. I can name at least two that I could have done without, but the other 13 more than make up for it.

Look, if you love Supernatural Gumshoe detective stories, short stories, or you are just a fantasy fan looking for the perfect vacation book, this collection comes with my highest recommendations. It's fun, witty, and wonderful. It shows that you might possess that magic touch, but that doesn't always pay the bills. Wizards Inc is brilliant and well worth the money.

Highest Recommendations.

Terrifying. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

"Bone" by Will Murray is worth the price of the book alone. "Oh, I'm collecting kitties and puttin' 'em in bags," sings our emerald-topped antagonist. What he does with them is, well, horrific. Throw in F. Paul Wilson's "Definitive Therapy," a chilling look at The Joker through a psychiatrist's eyes, and Robert Sheckley's "Joker's War," with The Joker somehow caught up in the second World War, and you've got a must-read for fans of this mythos. The rest of the stories are hit and miss, but you won't care. This collection of stories will keep you up late.

Classic Joker 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Joker is, and has always been, my favorite fictional character of all time. If you are a fan of the Killing Joke, and are a fan of the dark, psychotic portrayal of the Joker, then this book will definitely please you. I first read the book when I was in fourth grade. The story "On a Beautiful Summers day, he was" disturbed me then and still does now. It was the one story from this book that has stuck with me for all the years since I first read it (about 11 years ago). Check this book out; it's a real treat for Batman fans.

"In the earliest days of humankind, everything in the world seemed magical. Gods and demons, spirits and sprites were considered to be responsible for everything from life and death, to the turning of the seasons, to the abundance or failure of crops.Today, much that was once attributed to magic has been explained by science, and in our technologically driven world, the question is whether there is still a place for magic. For twenty of fantasy's finest imaginers, the answer is obviously, "Yes."So welcome to visionary, modern-day realms of magic where surprising things can still happen. From a Gypsy fortune-teller's transforming prophecy...to a troubled teen seeking a haven from his family woes...to a mysterious gathering of cats at Cape Canavaral...and a kid out to spook his best friend into believing that werewolves are real...here are stories that will amuse you or send chills down your spine or have you looking wistfully around the next corner, hoping to find a bit of magic all your own..."

Editorial Review:

It's not merely a task that's thankless--it's impossible. How can you hope to pick out the best of anything, let alone from such a contentious category as SF (and military SF, at that)? But this 13-story collection really does pull together at least some of the best short stories penned for the genre in the last century. Thanks to editors Harry Turtledove and Martin H. Greenberg, you'll find some of science fiction's biggest names--and most influential shorts--in this expertly chosen anthology.

Chronologically, the entries range from '50s pieces like Philip K. Dick's "Second Variety" and Arthur C. Clarke's "Superiority" to more modern ruminations on war like "The Scapegoat" by C.J. Cherryh and "To the Storming Gulf" by Gregory Benford. But rather than quality (all these stories are of inarguable pedigree) or even breadth, what might recommend these most to readers new to them are the ideas and other works they later inspired: Anne McCaffrey's "Dragonrider" and Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game" both gave rise to phenomenally successful series, Joe W. Haldeman's "Hero" preceded The Forever War, and Philip K. Dick's "Second Variety" became the SF thriller Screamers. The collection also gives you a glimpse of what dark thoughts were rattling around the heads of prolific writers like David Drake and George R.R. Martin in the '70s. --Paul Hughes

An Interesting Collection! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Very interesting suite of seventeen stories with differing takes on how America's future might unfold. There are some very good stories here (I am particularly fond of "A Souvenir to Remember" and "Better Guns") and others not so much ("Jesus Runs").

Recommended both for the subject matter and the interesting extrapolations....a fine read!

Editorial Review:

Oh say can you see— sixteen original stories about the America to come

Predicting the future has long been a cornerstone of science fiction, and the number of trends in society, politics, and religion that have followed these forecasts is impressive. Now sixteen authors have taken up the challenge of gazing into the future and seeing where America may be the day after tomorrow. From an America where history has become myth and misinformation amid the ruins of a once-great land...to a place where the only existence for genetic misfits is as slaves...to a company intent on cloning the world’s species, both extinct and endangered, back to a balanced ecosystem, here are stories that will have readers thinking about the future, and about how their own actions now could make a difference tomorrow.
