The best of the series yet! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Gayle Greeno has outdone herself in this book. It is a real page-turner! We enjoyed the first three books, the Gatti trilogy, but the first Gatten book is the best yet of the series. Doyce has retired from position as Seeker General and accompanies her husband and children on a trip to the Sunderlies. On the way to the seaport to catch their ship to the Sunderlies, it becomes apparent that someone is trying to sabotage their trip. On the sea, there are further problems which include one of Doyce and Jenret's twins and her bond being swept off of the ship in a great storm. There is intrigue all through the book and the author doesn't give away who are the good guys and who are the bad guys until the end of the book.

Editorial Review:

The Sunderlies-for Doyce's and Jenret's sixteen-year-old twins, Jenneth and her brother Diccon, the very name is a summons to exotic adventure. So when Jenret proposes taking the family along on a business trip there, the twins can hardly contain their excitement. The only thing more thrilling is the newfound Bond Jenneth has made with the ghatten Pw'eek and Diccon with her sister ghatten Kwee. Yet, almost from the start, the journey seems overshadowed with bad luck-or evil intent. But the real disaster strikes at sea, when a storm sweeps Jenneth and Pw'eek overboard. Desperate to find his lost twin, Diccon has no way of knowing that the worst for all of them still lies ahead....

Good but not her best 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I liked this book, but the ending just felt very rushed. Doyce, Khar, Rawn, and hubby seemed just thrown in with no real point. I think the idea of moving to new characters and evolving the world in time a bit was excellent and most of the story went along well, except the cameos by Doyce and crew. Better to have focused on the twins and the Edwin plot lines. The ending was just unsatisfactory. Loose ends were tied up that could have been left for a later book, later plots, but instead got thrown in without hardly any supporting story line.

Editorial Review:

In Gayle Greeno's highly anticipated return to her most successful and beloved series, a new generation of human Seekers and their catlike ghatti companions journey to a dangerous wilderness--while in the tunnels beneath Marchmont's Capital a deadly piece of long-forgotten technology is about to be rediscovered....

Praise for the Ghatti novels:

"A brilliant fantasy series... No one will be able to resist the Ghatti."--Rave Reviews

Seekers and Ghatti enter international diplomacy 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

It's been six months since Doyce's stepson Vesey and the renegade "Gleaners" (telepaths) he led were destroyed, though not without cost to Doyce herself: ever since that battle she has closed herself off mentally from everyone, including her would-be lover Jenret (whose presence she wasn't even aware of) and her beloved Bond, the ghatta Khar'pren. So Khar is delighted when the chief of the Seeker corps asks Doyce to join a diplomatic mission. The chief (only?) continent of the ghattis' world was long ago divided by its human colonists into two countries: the Seekers' Canderis, which is a republic, and Marchmont, a monarchy. Recently Marchmont's aged queen died without obvious heirs, and border incidents have been multiplying ever since, endangering the freedom of trade between the two nations and, thereby, Canderis's prosperity. Accompanied by several other Seekers and their ghatti, plus Nakum, the forester, and his ghatt Saam as guides, she sets out for the border. When Chak, the Bond of the senior Seeker, unexpectedly dies and his human walks off a cliff with his body, Doyce is promoted to head the party, much to her dismay, and they continue on their way.

In Marchmont, intrigue is afoot, and questions are everywhere. Who is the heir, and why can't he or she be found? Who is the mysterious Steward who guides Marchmont while the search continues? Who is trying to disrupt the Seekers' mission? Where does the D'Artagnan-esque guardsman Arras Muscadeine stand? Can the Canderisians stop a palace coup from placing the power-hungry Lord Maurice on the throne? As they struggle to carry out their mandate, they learn, to their astonishment, that Marchmont is overrun with telepaths--but these are not the meddling Gleaners of Canderis; their society acknowledges them and they function openly and, for the most part, ethically. Their powers will prove crucial to the resolution of the situation--but so will the Seekers: the late Queen on her deathbed urged her people to "wait for the ghatt" who would lead them to their next ruler, and so one does.

Although by no means a quick read, this second in the Ghatti's Tale series is equally rich in texture and insight, and author Greeno displays a keen understanding of how governments and economies work and how people react to psychological stress. (Some reviewers take Doyce to task for her "whining," but I understand her feelings: she thinks there should have been something she could have done, as Vesey's stepmother, to prevent him from growing up so twisted, and she believes she should have nurtured rather than destroyed him, which naturally makes for guilt.) The climactic scenes may be difficult for some readers to bear, as two ghatti and their Seekers die gallant but violent deaths for a country that isn't even theirs; but in the end the right triumphs and Doyce and Jenret appear to be on their way to healing.

Editorial Review:

Doyce, a human woman, and Khar'pern, the catlike ghatta with whom she is telepathically linked, join forces with other Seekers to battle the Gleaners, evil mutants able to steal and destroy the minds and souls of other humans. Original.

A retrospective of the beginnings of the Seekers Veritas 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

The war between Canderis and Marchmont is over and some people are afraid of the Resonants powers. The King of Marchmont makes a royal progress to Canderis in an attempt to show the Canderisans that there is nothing to fear from Resonants.

Doyce and Khar'Pern are both pregnant and Doyce is attempting to write a history of the Seekers Veritas for their 200th anniversary. In researching the history, Khar gets her involved in actually meeting Matty Vandersma and his Bond, Kharm. Doyce is able to go into a sort of trance and actually "live in the moment" with Matty.

In a tale of intrigue that involves Jenret, the father of Doyce's babies, Harrup and Parm, Addawanna and many of the people we learned to love in the previous books, the good eventually triumphs and Gayle Greeno leaves us wanting more.

Editorial Review:

The realm of the Canderis is badly shaken when they learn that a neighboring land is home to the Resonants, a race of telepathic men and women who use their mind-altering abilities to transform innocent people into mindless slaves. Original.

wonderful! 5 out of 5 stars.

Drawing you in from the very start, this book is difficult to put down. Don't forget to get the next two in this set. After I had finished this one, I just had to get the rest. Cat lovers will love to get their hands on this, but I don't believe you have to love cats to enjoy this book.

It sounds twee... but this is great SF/F 5 out of 5 stars.

I just indulged myself and re-read this entire first trilogy by Gayle Greeno. I loved the books when I read them a decade ago, and I loved them again today.

The premise sounds a little bit like it'll appeal only to 14-year-old girls. Telepathic cats? Give me a break. What's next, horses with eyelashes? (Oh. Right. That one's been done.) But truly, Greeno takes a lightweight sounding concept and does an outstanding job with it. Ghatti, 30-40 pound cats (or rather catlike aliens, but you'll recognize them as cats) can bond with humans and thereafter share their thoughts. Ghatti have a useful and reliable attribute: they can recognize when someone is lying. That makes them awfully useful as part of a judging team, so Bonds travel around the countryside trying cases.

What makes this series work is that Greeno does an excellent job of world building. Humans settled the planet a few hundred years ago, but the scientific devices interacted badly with the native earth; that is, they blew up, and took a lot of colonists with 'em. Some escaped in the remaining starships, but the story starts with the population of the survivors. Who, 187 years ago, were discovered by the ghatti.

The tale telling is excellent, the characterization is believeable, and the ghatti are a marvelous mishmash of "what you KNEW your cat was thinking" and wise observation (with a fondness for smoked fish).

The "aww, telepathic cats" aspect might make you think this is a book series suitable for young adults. It deals with adult subjects, though, so I wouldn't give it to someone under the age of 12, maybe 14.

Instead, keep it to yourself. It's really a wonderful trilogy.

Editorial Review:

Stranded on the world of Methuen for more than two hundred years, a colonizing expedition from Earth depends for their continued survival on the healing powers of the Eumedicos and the Seekers Veritas. Original.

How disappointing. 2 out of 5 stars.

I eagerly awaited Gail Greeno's next book after finishing the Ghatti's Tale Series. What a truly delightful read. Mind Snare was another story entirely. The characters didn't have the same resonance as the ones from Ghatti's Tale. I found little I had little empathy for Glynn and the relationship established between characters not very well supported. I kept reading the book hoping that it would pull through and at least have a satisfying ending. I found the use of modern references very distracting in the context of the story because it interrupted the content of what Ms. Greeno was aiming for. Only a truly die hard fan or collector should add this to their library. As for me, I'll keep re-reading the Ghatti's Tale and be enthralled again and again.

Editorial Review:

When an assassination attempt threatens to destroy his theater troupe, the last luxury left to Earth's satellite colonies, fifteen-year-old Glynn resorts to forbidden technology to track down the killers on the mother planet below. Original."
