This an acceptable entry level book to fantasy, it doesn't have any real depth or much in the way of originality. If your looking for a moderately enjoyable book that you can blow through in an evening then its right up your alley.

There are however much better books to be found at the same reading level.

Boring... 1 out of 5 stars.

So far I've hated this book. This book has a terrible plot. The Author will introduce a character and only use him or her for three pages. The Book was very confusing. It's more of a chore to do than a book to read. The only reason I'm reading it is because i want to get to the next book. I'd skip it if I were you... don't even start the book.

Editorial Review:

How do you tempt an archmage who has everything?

The path he takes will lead to a Realms-shaking confrontation where Elminster has to make the most important choice of his long life.

Whatever he decides, the Realms will be forever changed . . .

dry and unimaginative 2 out of 5 stars.

being a loyal forgotten realms fan, i was disappointed with greenwood's take on waterdeep. the story line never drew me in and the characters were one dimensional and largely uninteresting. would definitely not recommend this book - thank goodness he didn't write a trilogy.

Not their best... 1 out of 5 stars.

I was hoping for something great. Ed Greenwood and Elaine Cunningham together... Well, the prologue was awesome and I bought the book.
Chapter after chapter, I was hoping for the story to get interesting... at last... to no avail.
Not everything was bad. I learned some interesting things about the city and got the feel of some places at least.
I will try to forget this book and fondly remember others I enjoyed so much.

Editorial Review:

In the streets of Waterdeep, conspiracies run like water through the gutters, bubbling beneath the seeming calm of the city’s life. As a band of young, foppish lords discovers there is a dark side to the city they all love, a sinister mage and his son seek to create perverted creatures to further their twisted ends.

Althought the writing is decent, the story doesn't seem to go anywhere. Chat, Flirt, Hack, Die, Chat, Flirt, Hack, Die. Sorry, I hope I didn't spoil anything for anyone. If your looking for a bunch of sensational fights, you'll enjoy the book. If you want a little more depth, try one of his other books.

Editorial Review:

Aglirta is known as the Kingless Land. Once prosperous and peaceful, it has fallen into lawlessness, studded with feuding baronies engaged in a constant state of war . . . but the land is kingless no more.

The legendary Sleeping King has been reawakened by the efforts of the valiant Band of Four:
-Hawkril, a bold and brave warrior gifted with great strength and fortitude
-Craer, the crafty and clever thief
-Sarasper, the learned and wise healer
-Lady Embra Silvertree, the mystical Lady of Jewels, a powerful sorceress

With the aid of the Dwaerindim Stones, the King's curse has been lifted . . . but it will take more than the Dwaerindim to restore him to the long vacant throne of the land. Ambitious and devious barons are ready to challenge him for the throne, while dark, inhuman forces wait for the chance to bring Aglirta under its evil shadow. The Band of Four must quest for a powerful secret that will restore the kingdom to its former glory.

The 2nd best book in the trilogy. 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book starts out like another trilogy I can remember. It reads like a page by page record of a Dungeons and Dragons game with a little story peppered in here and there, which is not all that bad really. Ed Greenwood has a literary style that is quite different from most other authors I can think of. It's strangely different, but it holds my attention and keeps me reading more. I can't really explain it any better. He's a storyteller, a bard, and he has the gift that draws me in and holds me there. Oh, and that other trilogy was the Dragonlance series: Dragons of Autumn Twilight or something...

I thought the fighting, action and magic (spellfire) were all well-done. Some of the kissy-kissy sequences between Narm and Shandril were a little annoying, but this book really evoked scenes of another world, filled with magic and creatures and all sorts of items, and I felt like I could actually see the things Ed Greenwood was writing about. It was colorfully written, with plenty of amusing dialogue between the characters, as well as lots of magic (spellfire) and swordplay.

Definitely worth rereading, and I will someday.

Editorial Review:

A mass market expanded edition of Ed Greenwood's first Forgotten Realms novel.

Working from his original notes, he has revised and expanded the novel, developing characters and scenes that were cut from the original edition published in 1988. Fans will enjoy this mass market edition of the "director's cut" of the first novel in Greenwood's story of Shandril of Highmoon.

exciting Aglirta anthology 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 6 people found this review helpful.

On Aglirta, resides Silent House, the Silvertree clan ancestral estate. For centuries, the dynasty consistently politically outwitted their foes. However, the real power behind Silvertree is wizardry for this clan consists of the most powerful wizards known on Aglirta. However, not as well known is the price paid for this prowess. Some would say curse, as souls become part of a depository controlled by the Silent House, which over two thousand Sirl Reckoning has become sentient, alive, and protective of its "wards". These are the stories of ten lost souls sheltered by an increasingly intelligent essence.

This exciting anthology provides readers with an engaging look at Aglirta, world of the Band of Four series, but is much more than just a typical sword and sorcery collection. Each tale contains an underlying caution based on Lord Acton's concept that power corrupts, etc. The key characters are often bewildered as to why they did a deed as Ed Greenwood cleverly delves into cause, effect, and after-effect through a person feeling guilt and questioning their motives though acting courageously. These heroes understand they make mistakes and though suffer pangs of sorrow, they can admit errors. Mr. Greenwood is at its best with this fine look at one of his not-Forgotten Realms.

Editorial Review:

It is known as the Silent House.
The Silvertree Stronghold is more than just an ancestral estate for a dynasty of warlords known for their wizardly powers and political cunning - it is their otherworldly protector.
But with the protection that has allowed them to overcome both rivals and inhuman ravagers (such as the dreaded faceless) has come a curse that leads to a corruption of the soul that forever binds one's power to the stronghold itself in a prison of magic and madness.
Now two daring treasure hunters hope to profit by unlocking the secrets of its past and harvesting the powers of its bounty...but unbeknownst to them an observer watches their every move and waits to make his presence known from the halls of eternity.
The Silent House is a Chronicle of Aglirta, the multigenerational tale of a powerful and feared wizardly dynasty.

The Band of Four Meet 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

It reads like a Dungeons and Dragon adventure. This new land Mr. Greenwood created is called Asmarand. And this story takes place in the region of Aglirta where the King has been in a magical sleep for centuries, and Barons fight for power. This is the world our band of heroes is formed in. The band consists of The Four, gruff warrior Hawkril, sly thief Craer, grumpy healer Sarasper and beautiful sorceress Lady Embra Silvertree. They have reckless adventures that seem to never end. And the battles are magical. Worth the read, but not sure I will continue the series unless the book just falls into my hands.

Editorial Review:

Aglirta is known as the Kingless Land--once prosperous and peaceful, it has now fallen into lawlessness, studded with feuding baronies engaged in a constant state of war. The only hope for peace lies in the legend of the Sleeping King: destined to rise and restore peace when the Dwaerindim stones are recovered.

Lady Embra Silvertree is the sorceress daughter of a bellicose baron with an eye towards world domination. She has been imprisoned by her father who hopes to use her as a magical battery to fortify his castle. When a pair of good natured rogues attempt to steal one of her jewel encrusted gowns, they are quickly enlisted as allies to help her escape and, with the aid of a shape-shifting cleric, to seek out the Dwaerindim.

Good book, lots of details 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be very detailed in its descriptions of the North, and liked the fact that it leaves a few mysteries and potentially interesting sites here and there for you to embellish yourself. In doing this, I think it does a good job of giving you lots of details without restricting you.
The art and presentation are great. I liked the large fold-out map, however, I would have liked to have seen small shots of the relevant portions of that map in the "Lay of the Land" part of the text so that you could read the book without having to constantly refer to the large and unwieldy map. The map is nice and nicely done though, and I think it would be excellent for use in a game.
Anyway, I'd give it 4 stars because it was everything I expected it would be, gave me all of the information I was looking to get out of it, and was well done. It didn't blow me away, but it's a solid book and well worth the money.

An excellent narration by veteran Christopher Lane 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Ed Greenwood's DARK LORD provides an excellent narration by veteran Christopher Lane as it tells of author Rod, who finds himself trapped in his own world after he loses control of his scene and creation. It's up to him to embark on a journey to fight a self-created darkness in DARK LORD, the first installment in The Falconfar Saga.

An authors personal tale 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Ed Greenwood tries something a little different with Dark Lord. The main character is an author of both Fantasy and other Fiction who is magically tied to the world Falconfar and who has the power to shape this magical land with his ideas and words. It's not a bad premise, but it would take some really great writing to avoid being too much of a personal fantasy.

Dark Lord is not a long book and it's packed with lots of action. I felt like I was reading some of the Forgotten Realms books...oh, that's right Greenwood wrote some of them. In the FR series I normally felt like I was reading the depiction of a Dungeons and Dragons game with some nice padding to flesh things out. That's mostly what I felt like with Dark Lord.

Greenwood's writing style is solid and he creates an interesting world to tell the story in. I just found his characters to be a little flat. Some of them were better than others, but there was nothing ground-breaking or overly compelling with them. So, this is a good book, but nothing that will have you anxiously waiting for the next one.

A good 2nd book in a great trilogy. 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Ed Greenwood has a style of writing that I just like to read; and he created the Forgotten Realms! The man needs to be inducted into the Fantasy Authors Hall of Fame just for that one act alone.

This book picks up where the first book left off and continues the story of Shandril. It's pretty good writing, and Ed Greenwood writes about the swords and sorcery things I like to read about. I don't know how many other books, and movies for that matter, that over the years have fallen short just because they don't have enough magic in them. While the whole Shandril Saga has way more "spellfire" than magic, it's still interesting and fun to read. The characters are funny and interesting and I really wanted to find out what happened to them next.

I felt like this book (#2 of 3) wasn't as good as the other two, but I can't really put my finger on it. I don't remember enough really to make any kind of detailed dissertation on it, but I remember it being a little slower-paced, and not quite as interesting as the other two were. All in all it was a definite must-read of course to get to the 3rd book (the best in the trilogy!).

The Shandril's Saga trilogy is one of my favorite series, and I look forward to rereading them one day.

Editorial Review:

The second book in Ed Greenwood's first Forgotten Realms trilogy.

Author Ed Greenwood continued the story of Shandril of Highmoon in this second volume of the Shandril's Saga trilogy. This mass market edition of the trade paperback features new cover art by John Sullivan.
