Given such a rich subject matter the illustrations should have been more creative. The simplicity and harmony of the original song is lacking on the version provided with the CD so I just play the original version when reading/listening with my son. Doing that also avoids the horrible "but not so little GIRLS AND boys" lyrics revision, at least for pre-readers. There's a typo in the book that annoys me: I believe the words are "Pirate ships would lower their *flags*..." -- in the book it's singular: flag. I personally like the happy ending that the book suggests, though. Summary: my son loves it, and I like it as long as I can listen to the original version of the song while we read.

The latest in the popular "ology" series, Monsterology: The Complete Book of Monstrous Beasts is as beautiful and elaborate as its many companion volumes. Featuring writings on fantastic beasts from griffons and hippogriffs to phoenixes, the pegasus, unicorns, kraken, sphinx, and much more (but not dragons - they're covered in a different book!), Monsterology reads a bit like a nineteenth century naturalist treatise. Numerous delicate pop-up flaps, textured "hide samples" or other special tidbits adorn the pages - most notably the so-called "ashes from the nest of a phoenix". "Ashes from a phoenix's nest [like those above] are said to give long life. They should never be ingested, as this could prove disastrous. Instead, the ashes are so potent that simply keeping this book on a nearby shelf will have a noticeably beneficial effect in fifty years or so." The colorful artwork adds the perfect touch to this "must-have" for any fantasy buff's private collection.

Surpassing its popular prequel Eragon, this second volume in the Inheritance trilogy shows growing maturity and skill on the part of its very young author, who was only seventeen when the first volume was published in 2003. The story is solidly in the tradition (some might say derivative) of the classic heroic quest fantasy, with the predictable cast of dwarves, elves, and dragons--but also including some imaginatively creepy creatures of evil.
The land of Alagaesia is suffering under the Empire of the wicked Galbatorix, and Eragon and his dragon Saphira, last of the Riders, are the only hope. But Eragon is young and has much to learn, and so he is sent off to the elven forest city of Ellesmera, where he and Saphira are tutored in magic, battle skills, and the ancient language by the wise former Rider Oromis and his elderly dragon Glaedr. Meanwhile, back at Carvahall, Eragon's home, his cousin Roran is the target of a siege by the hideous Ra'zac, and he must lead the villagers on a desperate escape over the mountains. The two narratives move toward a massive battle with the forces of Galbatorix, where Eragon learns a shocking secret about his parentage and commits himself to saving his people.
The sheer size of the novel, as well as its many characters, places with difficult names, and its use of imaginary languages make this a challenging read, even for experienced fantasy readers. I originally bought Fablehaven for my daughter. I read it first. And I liked it a lot. Its an easy read, but there are some vocabulary words here and there, as well as some easy words that people don't really use much any more.

The second book of Fablehaven is really quite good and its a wonderful followup to the first one.

Two of my favorite lessons from the book:
1) Kids can learn that confidence fixes a lot of problems. This manifests itself in many places in the book. And its true in real life, too.
2) The machinations of evil follow a pattern that holds a lesson. I don't want to give anything away, but its regarding other people's motivations and not to be too naive and trusting. This surfaces at least 3 times in the book and then its spelled out for you. Its a wonderful lesson for teens to use in real life, especially at the age my daughter is.

So, I'm very happy with this book on those levels. There are many other lessons, but you'll have to read the book to find them.

Otherwise, i can only tell you that its an interesting read, entertaining, holds together well. Nothing too scary, but scary enough to be cool and fun. On rare occasions people seem to speak in a bit of a stilted way when they are explaining things, and lack some character depth, but lets not be too picky.

The author does a wonderful job of tying in concepts and mysteries introduced in the first book, as well as laying the groundwork for new concepts and mysteries. For example, you find out how Grandma became transformed in book 1, yet he leaves it at that, leaving the concept to be more thoroughly plumbed in a future book. In short, the series has been thought out ahead of time, which is always a good sign.

These mildly complicated story patterns will be enjoyed by "young at heart" adults as well as children.

All in all, at $6.99 delivered (I'm with amazon prime) its a no-brainer "buy".

Well,after years and years of waiting,book three in the Unicorn Chronicles is HERE!!!!Praise the Lord!And I am delighted to say that it is worth the wait.I literally could not put this book down until I was done reading it.A danger to the unicorns has been discovered. All mention of it has been blotted out of the unicorn chronicles except for its name-the Whisperer.The new Queen of the Unicorns sends Cara,Lightfoot,Belle,and Finder to the Valley of the Centaurs to see if they can find out what the Whisperer is.But they are split up when delvers attack them,and Cara is captured.With the help of some old friends,however(and a new ally)she is able to escape.Can they find out the identity of the Whisperer before the Blood Moon,when Beloved will begin the last hunt? The eleven-year old who received this book absolutely adored it. It has interesting 'facts' about dragons and many interesting special inserts - it's more of a coffee-table type/reference book than a story. If you have a dragon lover, I'd highly recommend it.

This book was well worth the buy.
I purchased this book as a gift. The recipient was 7.
Most of the book is still a little much for her yet, but she was beyond excited just the same. There was some that she thinks is interesting now, but as she gets older, there will be so much more for explore in the book. After going through the entire book, you have to remind yourself that dragons truly aren't real!

Allegorical Primer in Dealing with Difficult People 5 out of 5 stars.

Along with all the other favorable things that have been said about the entertainment value of "My Father's Dragon," its vocubulary, and Elmer's inventive problem-solving, teachers and parents should not overlook the opportunity to discuss how each animal that Elmer encounters can be related to students' and children's peer behavior. Every chapter has a gentle message about dealing with bullying, selfishness, pride, gossip, etc. That said, the often comic presence of the disagreeable animals is also tempered by Gannett's insertion of sympathetic aspects; for example, the rhinoceros. Elmer's inquiry about why the rhinoceros is in such a temperamental frame of mind is a real lesson in kindness and seeking to understand someone on a deeper level. Elmer's cleverness, bravery and faithfulness to his word are admirable traits but if parents and instructors are looking for really rich discussion, the personalities and behavior of the animals of Wild Island yield some really rich conversation and opportunities to teach.

My Father's Dragon--a favorite of young readers since the 1940s and a Newbery honor book--captures the nonsensical logic of childhood in an amusingly deadpan fashion. The story begins when Elmer Elevator (the narrator's father as a boy) runs away with an old alley cat to rescue a flying baby dragon being exploited on a faraway island. With the help of two dozen pink lollipops, rubber bands, chewing gum, and a fine-toothed comb, Elmer disarms the fiercest of beasts on Wild Island. The quirky, comical adventure ends with a heroic denouement: the freeing of the dragon. Abundant black-and-white lithographs by Ruth Chrisman Gannett (the author's stepmother) add an evocative, lighthearted mood to an already enchanting story. Author Ruth Stiles Gannett 's stand-alone sequel, Elmer and the Dragon, and her third volume, The Dragons of Blueland both received starred reviews in School Library Journal and are as fresh and original as her first. Seth and Kendra Sorenson are looking forward to another summer visit to Fablehaven with their grandparents who are really caretakers of a preserve for magical creatures. However, Fablehaven's magical mayhem comes to them as a fairy creature appears in their school, and a mysterious group bent on the destruction of magical preserves, the Society of the Evening Star, targets the kids at home. Seth and Kendra head for Fablehaven for protection, but also to help solve a mystery that could be a greater threat to Fablehaven than they faced last summer. New characters, new mysteries, and a bigger view of Brandon Mull's magical world make "Fablehaven: Rise of the Evening Star" a must read. Not only is this a fast paced, fun read, it also has some good lessons to learn about obedience, authority, decision making, and courage without being preachy. Just like the first installment in this series, I can't wait until my kids are old enough to read this. The action and other aspects may be a bit intense for kids under 10, but adolescents and teens will love this one. Parents will love it, too!
