Even better than the first book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This second book in Brandon Mull's wonderfully imaginative Fablehaven series is even better, and more complex, than the first one. Sister and brother Kendra, 14, and Seth, 12, who are being pursued by the evil Society of the Evening Star, return to their grandparents' sanctuary for mythical and magical creatures. Kendra has magical abilities as a result of having been kissed by fairies that make her a target of the Evening Star, and Seth is being chased by a froglike demon that is determined to devour him.

This story begins in middle school near the end of the spring term, when Kendra, with her magical fairy sight, can see that a hottie new eighth-grade boy who the other girls instantly fall in love with is really a hideously ugly kobold.

When the kids arrive at their grandparents' preserve, they find out that Grandpa has hired three specialists: Tanu, a potion master; Coulter, a collector of magical relics; and Vanessa, a capturer of mystical animals. They must keep a powerful artifact, hidden on the refuge, from falling into the hands of the Society of the Evening Star. Grandpa tells Seth and Kendra that the evil organization has an "uncanny ability for infiltration," and it soon becomes apparent that there is a traitor among them. But who? Issues of trust and betrayal are a prominent theme in this fantastical, suspenseful story.

I find this series so enthralling that I read the first book twice within a month, and I'll be rereading this one before going on to the third book, which I'm hearing very good things about and am really looking forward to.

Editorial Review:

At the end of the school year, Kendra and her brother Seth find themselves racing back to Fablehaven, a refuge for mythical and magical creatures. Grandpa Sorenson, the caretaker, invites three specialists -- a potion master, a magical relics collector, and a mystical creature trapper -- to help protect the property from the Society of the Evening Star, an ancient organization determined to infiltrate the preserve and steal a hidden artifact of great power. Time is running out. The Evening Star is storming the gates. If the artifact falls into the wrong hands, it could mean the downfall of other preserves and possibly the world. Will Kendra learn to use her fairy gifts in time? Will Seth stay out of trouble?

Dragon Rider 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Dragon Rider is a book about a dragon named Firedrake, a brounie named Sorrel, and a human named Ben. The main characters ran into two problems. The first problem was that they did not know where the rim of heaven was and the second problem was that Nettlebrand, another main character, was after them. I like the book because it was adventurous and very interesting. I would recommend this book to a person who likes fantasy and adventure.

Editorial Review:

Firedrake, a young dragon, receives a frightening warning one night: Humans are planning to destroy the valley in which he lives! All the dragons must flee. Their only refuge is a place above the clouds called the Rim of Heaven --- which may not even exist. Firedrake boldly volunteers to go ahead first. As he embarks on his journey, he meets Ben, a runaway boy. Together, the boy & dragon make their way toward the Rim of Heaven, all the while running a step ahead of Nettlebrand, a monster who will stop at nothing to hunt down Firedrake. Their quest will truly become an adventure like no other.

Well drawn and a clever teaching tool 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I love this book! It is a large format so my son has a lot to look at and does not get as easily distracted as he does with smaller books. The pictures are also high contrast. I enjoy the illustration a great deal myself. And did I mention the clever integration of the Chinese characters into the illustration. I'm not sure yet how much my son has learned but it has taught me a lot. Great book!

Editorial Review:

Meet Lin and her pet dragon!

When the dragon mysteriously disappears, Lin sets off on a journey to find her best friend . . . and readers set off on a journey of learning and discovery.

By ingeniously integrating written Chinese characters into the illustrations as the story progresses, Christoph Niemann has created a book that is engrossing, unique, and memorable. The Pet Dragon is a playful introduction to the fascinating world of Chinese language and culture . . . and a terrific story to share with children everywhere.

You are invited to join Lin for an adventure you will not soon forget!

third.

My oldest boy loves them 5 out of 5 stars.

I had never heard of any of these books til my son went to Wal-Mart w/ my mother and came home w/ the paperback version. He loves anything that has to do w/ Dragon's and stuff. He was right at the end of the book when the movie came out and the book fell apart on him. He hurried up and gathered all the pages and finished reading it so I would buy him the movie when it came out on DVD. Now let me tell you never have a child read a book and then watch a movie about it they always have to say what is missing. He just finished the second book and he is waiting for the movie to come out on it. Buy the Hard Copies. The Paperback will fall apart in no time. If you are into Dragon's, Fantasy, Harry Potter or anything in that nature then you will want to get this set to add to your collection. Hope this review helps some.

Disappointed: a dissenting voice 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was looking forward to receiving this book, following rave reviews and awards. But both I and my twin nearly-five-year-olds have been very much disappointed, and are unlikely to finish the second book (or even start the third) in this three-volume compilation.

While the theme and content (a quest to rescue a baby dragon, subsequent adventures with dragon) was extremely appealing given this audience's passions, the poor execution of this story neutered the otherwise promising tale.

The first person narrator describing a third person protagonist (the protagonist is "my father" in each sentence) is a tortured device which annoys, and adds nothing (it's not as though this relationship ever plays a role in the story) and a red herring / non-sequitur is the informant cat.

There was little characterisation, so we didn't really get a sense of the heroic adventure that the plot called for and consequently, we failed to become engaged. And to this post-Pippi Longstocking generation there was a certain anticlimatic lack of ingenuity in the uses to which the backpack contents were put.

Most disappointing for me was the artlessness in the telling. I longed for language that would stretch or bounce or play, given all else that was missing in the book. But it wasn't there.

On the plus side, once the protagonist reaches the island, the adventure paces well with a single digestible adventurelet in each chapter. The final chapter worked well too, where the animals all band together in one last-ditch attempt to prevent the rescue.

Admittedly, they're reasonably bright kids - it could be that it would suit a younger mind. If we get through the second (and third) volumes, I'll post an update.

BTW this edition has pages that are more a paperback than a hardback quality.

Editorial Review:

The classic fantasy trilogy of Elmer Elevator and the flying baby dragon has delighted children and their parents for generations. Now, on the occasion of their fiftieth anniversary, Random House is proud to bring the three timeless tales together in one beautiful commemorative edition, complete with the original delightful illustrations.  A Newbery Honor Book and an ALA Notable Book, My Father's Dragon is followed by Elmer and the Dragon ("rich, humorous, and thoroughly satisfying"*) and The Dragons of Blueland ("ingenious and plausible, the fantasy well-sustained"*).  Each story stands alone, but read in succession, they are an unforgettable experience.*Library Journal, starred review

Allegorical Primer in Dealing with Difficult People 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Along with all the other favorable things that have been said about the entertainment value of "My Father's Dragon," its vocubulary, and Elmer's inventive problem-solving, teachers and parents should not overlook the opportunity to discuss how each animal that Elmer encounters can be related to students' and children's peer behavior. Every chapter has a gentle message about dealing with bullying, selfishness, pride, gossip, etc. That said, the often comic presence of the disagreeable animals is also tempered by Gannett's insertion of sympathetic aspects; for example, the rhinoceros. Elmer's inquiry about why the rhinoceros is in such a temperamental frame of mind is a real lesson in kindness and seeking to understand someone on a deeper level. Elmer's cleverness, bravery and faithfulness to his word are admirable traits but if parents and instructors are looking for really rich discussion, the personalities and behavior of the animals of Wild Island yield some really rich conversation and opportunities to teach.

Editorial Review:

When Elmer Elevator hears about the plight of an overworked and underappreciated baby flying dragon, he stows away on a ship and travels to Wild Island to rescue the dragon.

Beast Quest Series 5 out of 5 stars.

Great! My grand daughters really enjoy bed time stories and this series is exciting, yet age appropriate. It has a good story base and lessons on sticking with it because the long term gain is more important than the short term gains.

not a keeper 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I agree with other reviewers, this is a weak book for McKinley. The book comes across as undeveloped in storyline and characters. The narrator, the boy hero Jake, can be witty, but also sometimes too cute. The book rambles to a close. One wishes that a good editor could have taken a stronger hand in guiding this book along.

Despite boring stretches of dragon history and animal communication theory, this book can be sometimes engaging. But I did skip reading a fair amount of blah blah. If you're curious about this book, I suggest you try your public library. Not one of those books you'll read a second time. Or maybe not even a first time.

Dragonhaven 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed the story very much as it revealed the boy growing in awareness regarding his world and his response to it as effected by his mothers death. The dragons are not overwhelming but are still much in tune with the growing problems they presented. All in all a nice story but it did ramble on when these incidents could have been included in the main story.

Editorial Review:

Dragons are extinct in the wild, but the Makepeace Institute of Integrated Dragon Studies in Smokehill National Park is home to about two hundred of the world’s remaining creatures. Until Jake discovers a dying dragon that has given birth—and one of the babies is still alive.
