Silly & Fun! 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

If you're looking for a serious book about Thanksgiving, then 10 Fat Turkeys is not the book for you. This book is about ten fat turkeys walking along a fence, when one by one they fall, break the fence, and perch on a tree instead. It's funny, and intended to appeal to the very young, or young at heart. The illustrations are bright, and bold, and will appeal to young children say 1 to 5-years. My son laughs when I read this book, and now at five he's starting to read it to himself.

10 Fat Turkey's mimics the pattern in Melanie Gerth's, Ten Little Ladybugs, although Gerth's book is sweet, this work is just plain silly.

10 fat turkeys fooling on a fence.
"Looky!" says a silly turkey, swinging from a vine.
GOBBLE GOBBLE WIBBLE WOBBLE whoops! Now there are...9.

It's a lesson in simple subtraction, and one we enjoy reading after Halloween. It's not a Thanksgiving book per se, there is no mention of the holiday, or even the season. It just a fun, nonsense book for little tykes.

Editorial Review:

"Looky!" says a silly turkey swinging from a vine. Gobble gobble wibble wobble.Whoops! Now there are nine.Girls and boys will gobble up this hilarious story about ten goofy turkeys and their silly antics: swinging from a vine, strutting on a boar, doing a noodle dance, and more. Veteran author Tony Johnston has written a joyful text, which first-time illustrator Richard Deas brings to life as wild and wacky fun!

Editorial Review:

Sesame Street veteran and Emmy Award-winner Mo Willems returns with a fast, funny follow-up to Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!--only this time, the short-tempered pigeon faces his perfect foil in a "special guest star" duckling. In the previous Pigeon book, author and illustrator Willems expertly distilled the escalating emotions of preschoolers all too anxious to get their way. The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog--also a simple and sparsely illustrated story--explores the flip side of that coin, exposing the poker-face persuasive powers of young negotiators. The pigeon just wants to greedily eat the hot dog that he's found: "Oooooh! A hot dog! Yummy! Yummy! Yummy!" Then along comes the duckling, "scooty scoot scoot!" with his insistent questions about hot dogs: "What do they taste like?...Would you say that it tastes like chicken?...Hey, I'm a curious bird." At first, the pigeon entertains the duckling, "Each morsel is a joy! A celebration in a bun!", but then he soon suspects the little bird might have designs on his delicious dog. In the end, of course, the clever duckling gets his way--and half of the hot dog: "You know, you're pretty smart for a duckling." (Ages Baby to Preschool) --Paul Hughes

The Election Process and Children 5 out of 5 stars.

The New York Times best illustrated children's book of 2004. Need I say more.

Adults will love reading this to the little ones! 5 out of 5 stars.

Cronin books always tickle my funnybone, so it's fun to read them to the little kids, especially since we will read them 1000 times over the next few years!

I'd vote for him 3 out of 5 stars.

Considering the present elections, I felt this was an appropriate book to pick instead of the political madness.

When Duck sees unfairness on the farm, he decides to change things (always with the hope of making things easier for himself). He runs for farmer (this is a democratic barnyard) and this political career shoots off from there.

The story runs on the same joke of ballots, but it's all funny and reminiscent of the Florida incident. But what really makes this a charmer is the nonchalant way everything plays out and the universal acceptance that animals can run for office and still be second-class barn yard animals.

Editorial Review:

Our fellow Americans,

It is our pleasure, our honor, our duty as citizens to present to you Duck for president in 2008. Here is a duck who began in a humble pond, who worked his way up to farmer, to governor, and now perhaps the highest office in the land.

Some say if he walks like a duck and talks like a duck, he is a duck.

We say if he walks like a duck and talks like a duck, he will be the next president of the United States of America.

Thank you for your vote.

Merry Christmas Ollie 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Walking through my local bookstore I was excited to see the terrific Christmas display for MERRY CHRISTMAS OLLIE. Ollie's cute red and yellow knit stocking cap brings the little goslings to life. I fell in love with this picture book! The magic and wonder of Christmas is captured in simple snow filled illustrations that will delight the young reader. Once again Dunrea's goslings take center stage in this sure to be Christmas classic.

Editorial Review:

An endearing and beautifully rendered tale sure to be a family favorite.

It's Christmas Eve.
Gossie and Gertie hang their bright colored boots in the barn.
Peedie and BooBoo hang their striped stockings in the barn.
Ollie stomps through the snow.
It's not easy to wait for Father Christmas Goose!

With ample wry humor, beautiful ink-and-watercolor pictures, and irresistible charm, Olivier Dunrea shares the first holiday story of Gossie and friends.Ollie perfectly encompasses the adorable impatience of young children waiting for Christmas to finally come.

What's up Duck 5 out of 5 stars.

I like this book. My girls love it and is a great way to teach opposites. It is very simple my 2 year old knows it by heart. I do add say for clean I say the "opposite" is dirty so they have that reference of the word opposite.

So cute and educational! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is absolutely adorable! If you've read anything else by Tad Hills, you know he has a great sense of humor and the illustrations in this book make our family laugh! They also so clearly demonstrate the opposite that my 2 year old reads this aloud to us, using the pictures as a guide. A wonderful starter book of opposites that is also really fun.

Editorial Review:

Little siblings of Duck and Goose fans rejoice! The stars of the bestselling Duck & Goose and Duck, Duck, Goose return in this board book for preschoolers, this time, to introduce basic opposites. Goose carries an ohso-heavy log, while duck easily balances a light-as-a-feather feather. Thistle is one fast bird, but Goose is slooo-w. And when Duck is sound asleep, Goose is wide awake. With a simple text and colorful illustrations–plus the inimitable characters, of course–here’s a wonderful, and humorous, introduction to an important concept.

Don't judge a book by looking at the cover... 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

"Duck and Goose" look like they'll be simplistic and overly-basic -- both the artwork and the text are deceptively plain... But these two little guys actually have a richer and more believable emotional life than many picturebook characters. They might not have a long shelf-life (kids will probably move on past them fairly quickly...) but while they are your book friends, your lives will be enriched. Definitely worth checking out. (ReadThatAgain!)

Editorial Review:

“That egg is mine! I saw it first,” says Goose. “I touched it first. It’s mine,” declares Duck.
Like James Marshall’s George and Martha, and Rosemary Wells’s Benjamin and Tulip, Duck and Goose have to work at getting along. You see, Duck doesn’t much care for Goose at first–and Goose isn’t fond of Duck–but both want the egg that each claims to be his. As the two tend to their egg, and make plans for the future, they come to appreciate one another’s strengths. And when a bluebird points out that it isn’t really an egg–it’s a polka dot ball–the two are not dismayed. After all, it is a lovely ball. . . .
Filled with humor that young children will appreciate–and recognize!–and starring two unforgettable characters, Duck & Goose has all the ingredients of a classic-in-the-making.

Very easy to read particularly as a bedtime story. My toddler has the refrain "Pittery, pattery, skittery, scattery ZIP round the corner came Zachary Quack" completely memorized. Very nicely illustrated as well.

Hairy Maclary dozily dreamed as he lay on his back when pittery pattery, skittery scattery, ZIP ‘round the corner came Zachary Quack. Little Zach presents quite a nuisance, but their friendship wins out in the end.

Ping - an old story still as popular today 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book because I had lost the school library's copy and it was my husband's favourite book as a child. When it arrived I read it to every class from Kindergarten to year six and they all loved it. It was a good lead into the Beijing Games but it also led into a study of cormorants, river dwelling, mapping, relationships and counting.I can highly recommend this ageless story.

Editorial Review:

The tale of a little duck alone on the Yangtze River, The Story About Ping is a sweet and funny book with wonderfully rich and colorful illustrations. On a day like any other, Ping sets off from the boat he calls home with his comically large family in search of "pleasant things to eat." On this particular day, he is accidentally left behind when the boat leaves. Undaunted, the little duck heads out onto the Yangtze in search of his family, only to find new friends and adventures--and a bit of peril--around every bend.

The exceptional illustrations bring the lush Yangtze to life, from Ping's family to the trained fishing birds he finds himself among to the faithfully rendered boats and fishermen. Certainly intended to be read aloud, The Story About Ping deserves a place on every young reader's (or listener's) shelf. (Picture book)

Three Silly Chicks Review 5 out of 5 stars.

Oh how we love Spring here in the coop! Everywhere we look we see chicks and eggs! We feel the love. We get especially light-headed whenever we see a new chick-and-egg book, which is why we practically passed out when we saw The Perfect Nest.

In this hilarious tale, Jack the Cat, who's hungry for an omelet, decides to build the perfect nest to attract the perfect chicken who would lay the perfect egg. A perfect plan! Things turn out even better than Jack imagined when his cozy nest attracts a chicken, a duck, and a goose, all of whom lay eggs. Jack drools in anticipation. Now he has breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all in one nest. But the frisky fowl don't want to leave. After lots of failed attempts, Jack is finally able to trick them into leaving by telling them there's an even better nest at the next farm. They fly the coop, leaving their eggs behind. Alone at last, Jack is just about to crack open his glorious eggs when suddenly out pops a baby chick, a baby duck, and a baby goose. All three think the wily feline is their mama and proceed to follow him around the farm, much to Jack's dismay. How can he eat something that calls him mama? He can't, of course, and after a snuggle fest with his new brood he realizes that he has made the perfect nest after all.

Tight writing and lively illustrations make this book a chick magnet. We love the idea of pairing it with An Egg is Quiet by Dianne Aston for an absolutely eggcellent storytime. And that's no yolk! (Oh, geez, sorry 'bout that. It couldn't be helped.)

Editorial Review:

It’s the perfect read-aloud! A flustered cat is on the verge of crying fowl in a farmyard story that will crack kids up.

Jack the cat is building the perfect nest. It’s bound to attract the perfect chicken, who will lay the perfect egg, which will make the perfect omelet. And sure enough, a chicken shows up ("¡Caramba!"), but so do a duck ("Sacré bleu!") and a goose ("Great balls of fire!"). Feathers get ruffled — and Jack gets much more than breakfast — in a funny tale rich in detail with a sweet final twist.

Nicholas Duck loves Christmas as much as the next animal, and he is happy to try on the new Santa hat that’s mysteriously delivered to his house. But when his friends see him and immediately launch into their Christmas lists, he doesn’t know what to do . . . until he runs into Santa himself.

David Milgrim’s bright, bold art is instantly appealing and readers will embrace a brand-new Christmas story with a truly original twist.
