Merry Christmas Ollie 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Walking through my local bookstore I was excited to see the terrific Christmas display for MERRY CHRISTMAS OLLIE. Ollie's cute red and yellow knit stocking cap brings the little goslings to life. I fell in love with this picture book! The magic and wonder of Christmas is captured in simple snow filled illustrations that will delight the young reader. Once again Dunrea's goslings take center stage in this sure to be Christmas classic.

Editorial Review:

An endearing and beautifully rendered tale sure to be a family favorite.

It's Christmas Eve.
Gossie and Gertie hang their bright colored boots in the barn.
Peedie and BooBoo hang their striped stockings in the barn.
Ollie stomps through the snow.
It's not easy to wait for Father Christmas Goose!

With ample wry humor, beautiful ink-and-watercolor pictures, and irresistible charm, Olivier Dunrea shares the first holiday story of Gossie and friends.Ollie perfectly encompasses the adorable impatience of young children waiting for Christmas to finally come.

A hit! 5 out of 5 stars.

This series is wonderful! Our two-year-old absolutely loves the Baby Loves Jazz series. We bought a few to start out, then ended up buying the whole set. Two months after acquiring them, she is still enamored and requests to listen to them and read them every day. Her favorites? Well, these are the words we hear most often: "Mommy, read Duck and Miles?" or "Daddy, listen to Duck and Miles?" Philly Joe is also high on the list. I recommend them all. The books stand out on their own, but the music is what makes this series really shine. For example, on Duck Ellington's CD, he does a great Monk style on one track, then switches to great impression of Coltrane's classic quartet on the next track, with a very nice McCoy Tyner impression. Lots of variety and high quality make this series worthwhile (though I could have done without Louis Lion's potty tune). Don't forget the Go Baby Go CD as well (a stand-alone CD without a book), which is perhaps a notch above the music on the book CDs. The ABC tune is her favorite on that one.

Editorial Review:

Boogie along with Duck Ellington as he plays the piano:

The black and white keys, he played them with ease,

And the rest of the animals asked for "more please ."

Great fun 5 out of 5 stars.

Our little boy (a young toddler) loves this book. We've got hundreds of similar books and have owned and read this one for months now--it doesn't get old and he still loves and laughs at it. It's got great illustrations, excellent rhymes, lots of opportunity for sound effects and voices. As for the idea that the duck is treating his friends badly, well...that's part of why it's funny! You have to explain that the duck is being a jerk, although I think the kid will see that himself.

Our favorite book 5 out of 5 stars.

This has been our 2 yr old grandson's favorite book since he was 9 months old. My daughter and I can recite it in our sleep. Yet, it never grows dull.

The illustrations are bright, colorful and engaging. There are several items to point out and look for, which is what our little guy enjoys.

The text has rhythm and the story begs for participation via sounds effects and physical support.

Our boy shouts every time he sees Duck's vegetables go flying (and we exclaim "Where's the carrot? Look at the watermelon!" etc.) He compares everyone's feet during, "These are the feet, which jump the duck down..." And he gets red in the face helping sheep, frog and duck push against the back of the truck.

I like the introduction to poetic language (again, "the feet that jump the duck down") and the rhyme.

Reviewers have commented on Duck's selfishness in leaving his friends stuck in the muck. However, for our family, being in the muck is a pleasurable, sought-after experience and Duck's quirky character provides opportunity for silly comments.

This is the easiest of the duck books. The others are slightly more complex and Duck's irascibility is even more pronounced. As our boy grows and understands, we know that Duck's less desirable characteristics will serve as object lessons and also provide opportunities to highlight the patience and friendship of Goat, Frog and Sheep. Good lessons, those.

Editorial Review:

This is the tale of a duck in a truck
a truck that was stuck in some yucky brown muck.
A sheep in a jeep and a frog in a bush saw the truck stuck and gave it a push.
But the truck stayed stuck!
What now, can you guess?
Could a goat in a boat get them out of this mess?

Don't judge a book by looking at the cover... 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

"Duck and Goose" look like they'll be simplistic and overly-basic -- both the artwork and the text are deceptively plain... But these two little guys actually have a richer and more believable emotional life than many picturebook characters. They might not have a long shelf-life (kids will probably move on past them fairly quickly...) but while they are your book friends, your lives will be enriched. Definitely worth checking out. (ReadThatAgain!)

Editorial Review:

"That egg is mine! I saw it first," says Goose. "I touched it first. It’s mine," declares Duck. Like James Marshall’s George and Martha, and Rosemary Wells’s Benjamin and Tulip, Duck and Goose have to work at getting along. You see, Duck doesn’t much care for Goose at first–and Goose isn’t fond of Duck–but both want the egg that each claims to be his. As the two tend to their egg, and make plans for the future, they come to appreciate one another’s strengths. And when a bluebird points out that it isn’t really an egg–it’s a polka dot ball–the two are not dismayed. After all, it is a lovely ball. . . . Filled with humor that young children will appreciate–and recognize!–and starring two unforgettable characters, Duck & Goose has all the ingredients of a classic-in-the-making.

"Olivia wants Duck and Goose for her birthday. Not the book, she's read the book, she loves the book. Now she wants Duck and Goose." --Ian Falconer in The New Yorker

more than meets the eye 5 out of 5 stars.

We have the board book edition, and I have to admit, I didn't think my 2-year old was going to like it when I first flipped through it. There didn't seem to be much to it --- no eye-catching illustrations and not much text. Shows how much I know... My daughter loves it. The story is less about Rosie the hen and more about the fox --- what happens to it from page to page. It is truly a sequential story and shows cause-and-effect: on one page you see the fox leaping towards Rosie, who is walking past the pond. On the next page, you see the fox in the pond. Your toddler will make the connection on her own: "Uh-oh. Fox fall in water."

Editorial Review:

Rosie the hen leaves the chicken coop and sets out for a little walk. Right behind her is the fox, slyly trying to catch up with her. Rosie's walk is quiet, uneventful and eventually leads her back to the coop, blissfully unaware of the fox's travails as he tries -- unsuccessfully -- to navigate the obstacle course that Rosie has led him through.

This is the well-known and loved five little ducks story, but the artwork is absolutely charming and my daughter loves to notice new details each time we read it. Definitely a book that will get read and re-read, but you won't tire of it since it is so beautifully done.

Three Silly Chicks Review 5 out of 5 stars.

Reviewed by Three Silly Chicks - Readers, Writers, and Reviewers of funny books for kids.

Oh how we love Spring here in the coop! Everywhere we look we see chicks and eggs! We feel the love. We get especially light-headed whenever we see a new chick-and-egg book, which is why we practically passed out when we saw The Perfect Nest.

In this hilarious tale, Jack the Cat, who's hungry for an omelet, decides to build the perfect nest to attract the perfect chicken who would lay the perfect egg. A perfect plan! Things turn out even better than Jack imagined when his cozy nest attracts a chicken, a duck, and a goose, all of whom lay eggs. Jack drools in anticipation. Now he has breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all in one nest. But the frisky fowl don't want to leave. After lots of failed attempts, Jack is finally able to trick them into leaving by telling them there's an even better nest at the next farm. They fly the coop, leaving their eggs behind. Alone at last, Jack is just about to crack open his glorious eggs when suddenly out pops a baby chick, a baby duck, and a baby goose. All three think the wily feline is their mama and proceed to follow him around the farm, much to Jack's dismay. How can he eat something that calls him mama? He can't, of course, and after a snuggle fest with his new brood he realizes that he has made the perfect nest after all.

Tight writing and lively illustrations make this book a chick magnet. We love the idea of pairing it with An Egg is Quiet by Dianne Aston for an absolutely eggcellent storytime. And that's no yolk! (Oh, geez, sorry 'bout that. It couldn't be helped.)

Editorial Review:

Jack the cat is building the perfect nest. It's bound to attract the perfect chicken, who will lay the perfect egg, which will make the perfect omelet. And sure enough, a chicken shows up ("Caramba!"), BUT so do a duck ("Sacre bleu!") and a goose (Great balls of fire!"). Feathers get ruffled - and Jack gets much more than breakfast - in a funny tale rich in detail with a sweet final twist.

They're very cute and simple. Charming would have to be the word I'd use. Just the thing to attract the attention of a baby or toddler.

Can't recommend them enough :)

This one is funnier than most, though I can't say why.

I will say that after several books (and several readings of each book), one starts to notice how formulaic they are. But that's all right. Children like predictable things.

BooBoo is a hit in our household 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The recommended age may be 4-8 years but my 16-month old LOVES BooBoo and asks for it nearly every day. "Shall we read a book?" we ask him and he'll reply, "BooBoo"! The illustrations are lovely and fun and even we adults don't tire of this. Good job!

Editorial Review:

BooBoo is a curious blue gosling who likes to eat. She likes to eat everything. Well, almost everything.

More of Gossie! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Right from the first two books about Gossie, my grandson and I were taken by Olivier Dunrea's books. They are colorful and uncluttered with simple honest lessons for little ones about sharing with friends and how no one is perfect. Peedie with his little red hat is no exception. I was able to read it to my grandson through our web cams and the pictures showed up beautifully.

Peedie 5 out of 5 stars.

My 6 month old daughter loves Peedie. She gets so excited when she sees the simple white cover with yellow Peedie and his special red hat. The pages are nice and simple and the story is also nice and short which should fare well for the upcoming toddler attention span! I am looking forward to picking up the rest of the Gossie and Friends books for her enjoyment.

Love this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

My son absolutely loves this book especially the end where Peedie finds his lucky red baseball cap again. He now has a lucky red baseball cap of his own like Peedie.

Editorial Review:

Peedie is a small yellow gosling who sometimes forgets things. But he never forgets to wear his lucky red baseball cap. He wears it everywhere. Until he puts it in a secret place.

I Wish That I Had Duck Feet is about a kid daydreaming about what he could do if he various differen abilities or talents, including the whacky one of wanting to have duck feet.

This might be handy to have swimming, but not so hot for running around the park or riding your bike.

Very fun 4 out of 5 stars.

We got this one as a TJ Maxx special, I think -- one of those days when the child had to hold something while going through the store.

Anyway, it's great. It's very good for reading out loud, it is very 50's (even though the protagonist and antagonist dislike one another, they still hang around with all the same friends in their small town), and it's funny.

I tone down the mother's harsh words when I read it to my kids -- twice she orders the boy out of the house, and I insert various "please"s in places.

There is an undercurrent of spiteful wishes toward the antagonist (Big Bill Brown) but I think that's how kids really feel, so I go with it.

We read this one a lot.
