This story will inspire and move you 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I had borrowed this book from the library when I was reading William Fiennes' book, The Snow Geese. He mentioned that the story had inspired him to embark on his epic journey to follow the snow geese from their wintering grounds in Texas to their breeding grounds in the Foxe Peninsula. I was so moved by this story that I had to have a copy for myself. Get this book - I know you'll be glad you did! And when you read it, you'll see why it is still being published, 66 years after it was first published in 1941. That it has stood the test of time is a testament to the masterpiece that it is.

This book is really not written for children. I don't know why they keep saying that it's for kids. I suppose it's because of the lovely illustrations in it. However, the reading level is for young adults and adults. There's another book titled THE SNOW GOOSE AND OTHER STORIES. That book is written for young children and it's the same story, just rewritten for junior readers.

The Snow Goose 5 out of 5 stars.

I first read this story as a child but never had my own copy. It was wonderful to re-read this again and still find it a lovely and poignant story. I loved my beautifully illustrated new hardback version. This famous book is a must in anyone's library.

a resourceful, independent hen 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The story of a resourceful, independent, persistent hen, told with a sense of humor. Nice short book with good illustrations. A perfect story to read on a snowy day. My 2.5 y.o loves to hear it again and again.

Fall in love with a hen 5 out of 5 stars.

Such a simple little story with a winsome little heroine. After meeting her in a bookstore I fell hopelessly in love. I will admit that visually she struck me to the heart and of course there is her name. My granddaughter reads about her adventures every night and she understands that even though she gets to hear the stories the books are still Grandma's. If she is properly respectful of Minerva Louise I will pass her along one day. Not yet. This charming little hen must stay with me for a while

A Hat for Minerva Louise 5 out of 5 stars.

This book serves two purposes. Young children love to have it read to them. Older children like the humor of Minerva Louise's judgement errors. It's a very enjoyable book, ages 2 to 10.

Editorial Review:

Minerva Louise, the irrepressible little hen, sets out on an adventure on a cold, snowy day, but she soon discovers that she needs to find something to keep her warm.

Great laugh out loud story! 5 out of 5 stars.

There once was a duck named Max, an aspiring chef of soups. Previously, Max had made such culinary "concoctions" as Fish Soup with Curry and Pickled Lemon, Cracker Barrel Cheese and Marshmallow Soup, and Squash Gumbo.
One day, Max decided to make a masterpiece of soup, but discovers that he is missing an herb to bring his dish to perfection. While out in the garden, Max's friends come by. While they discover and empty kitchen, they find a pot bubbling away on the stove. What follows can only be described as a hilarious and fun treat. With bright eye-catching illustrations and gloriously fun text, Duck Soup is sure to be a hit with young and old alike!

Duck Soup 4 out of 5 stars.

I am a preschool teacher and I received this book as a gift for the classroom. The children really enjoyed the story. A very sweet story with wonderful illustrations. We did go back after the first read through to find the floating feather part, because the children were a bit confused as to why the animal friends thought the duck was in the soup. A worthwhile buy.

Editorial Review:

Max the duck is cooking up an amazing soup. But what's this? A feather floating in the soup! And where's Max? Brody the dog, Dakota the cat, and Bebe the bird race about in their hilarious search for the missing Max. But remember, sometimes things just aren't as they appear.

If your boy loves balls... 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

My son has a new obsession-balls. He loves his t-ball set. He nadders "ball, ball, ball, ball..." whenever he spies a baseball game or any other game involving a ball. So, I searched the bookstore for a book about balls that I liked, because I knew I would have to read it over and over again! This book has done the trick for us.

It appeals to all ages. It has the animals and the sound effects (swoosh, crack, bump etc.) that toddlers love. It is comical to my daughters, as the bossy duck is cute in his ideas for retreiving the ball, and ultimately is shut down with a YOU'RE OUT! It also teaches them the value of every team member. It appeals to me, because I get a chuckle out of an A type personality exhibited in a duck and the other group dynamics which we see in play groups everywhere! The little frog is run over in the beginning because of his size, but he plays 2 very important roles later on in the book.

The illustrations aren't prize winning but certainly aren't drab brown and/or black and white. They are simply fine. I consider them cheery.

All in all, I give it 5 stars because my different aged children all love it! I give them choices, and it is one of their "go to" books. So far, I haven't gotten bored reading it to them, so that counts for something too!

P.S. Using different animal sounding voices has really been entertaining as well!

When Arther Bobowicz is asked to bring home the Thanksgiving turkey,he is horrified to discover the shops are empty. But when he visits the apartment of an eccentric scientist,he finds himself bringing home a 266 pound chicken instead. He insists to his parents he should be able to keep the chicken and eventually, his begging succeeds. He has great fun teaching his chicken new tricks,(such as going down slides, playing on swingsets etc.)but his 266 pound chicken escapes. Mayhem ensues.

This book is a fun, fast read for children of all ages to enjoy. While it can be read in one sitting,it should be read at least twice, in order to get all the jokes.

RATING:B+

Editorial Review:

SOMETHING'S FOWL IN HOBOKEN.

When Arthur Bobowicz is sent out to bring home the family's Thanksgiving turkey, he returns instead with Henrietta -- a 266 pound chicken with a mind of her own. Feathers fly when this colossal clucker descends upon Hoboken, New Jersey. Thus begins the hilarious hen-tastic tall tale that has kept readers in stitches since Henrietta first pecked her way onto the scene in 1977.

Revised with brand new illustrations by Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Auth, this new edition of The Hoboken Chicken Emergency will have readers crowing so hard with laughter, they may just lay an egg!

Another Great Duck and Goose book 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book for my 2 year old neice Abby. She couldn't put it down. She especially liked the number 8 page. A simple but effective way to learn to count to 10 with beautiful illustrations and short sentences.

Abby and I are Duck and Goose fans and this one is another hit. We are eagerly awaiting Duck and Goose's next adventure.

Editorial Review:

PRESCHOOLERS WILL CHEER the return of Duck and Goose in their second board book appearance! All the favorite characters, including Bluebird and Thistle, return—this time to introduce basic counting concepts.

One goose. Two ducks. Three friends. As the characters illustrate from numbers 1 to 10, children will love to follow along with the simple text and all-new original art.

A small trim size and Easter egg-colored art makes this the perfect Easter basket stuffer for young children everywhere!

Nice series promoting emotional growth... 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

A great sequel to the first book... "Duck and Goose" look like they'll be simplistic and overly-basic -- both the artwork and the text are deceptively plain -- but these little guys actually have a richer and more believable emotional life than many picturebook characters. The newcomer, Thistle, is one of the most believable brats to be seen on the printed page in quite a while... But you still gotta love her!

These books might not have a long shelf-life (kids will probably move on past them fairly quickly...) but while Duck and Goose they are your book friends, you're lives will be enriched. Definitely worth checking out! (ReadThatAgain!)

Editorial Review:

Duck & Goose, Goose & Duck. Feathered friends forever . . . or are they? That's what we discover in this charming and hilarious follow-up to the bestselling Duck & Goose. You see, there's a challenge to their friendship: a little whippersnapper of a duck named Thistle. Thistle's good at everything (or so she thinks), from math to holding her breath to standing on her head. Duck thinks she's fantastic. But Goose does not! And so Goose is faced with a problem close to the hearts of children everywhere: what happens when your best friend makes a new friend?

This book is a wonderful & unique story!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have owned this book since I was a yong child and has always been one of my favorites. It has all of the trimmings, a wickid step mother and all!

Wild Swans 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

In the mid-1800s, Andersen wrote many original fairy tales. He has many common themes however to the stories that had been passed down for generations. This story is of a young girl sent away by her evil stepmother. She then must rescue her eleven brothers from the spell that has been placed upon them. In a dream, a fairy came to her and gave her the answer. So after, a king falls in love with her at first sight. This tale is a bit lengthy and has a few passages of irrelevant information, but because the reader feels an emotional attachment to the girl so quickly, attention never waivers. The watercolor illustrations help to support the text, but at times do not have very much contrast, giving them a murky feel. Second graders would be able to read the text; however it may take until fourth grade for children to be able to do it in one sitting.

Why 4 stars?:
Some passages in the story can get a bit lengthy. Although the text is written on a second grade level, it may take a while before students can read this in one sitting. However, they will definitely listen to it, as the characters are very captivating. The illustrations are a little muddy though.

Editorial Review:

When her eleven brothers are turned into mute swans by their evil stepmother, brave Eliza endures great suffering to break the spell and rescue them. A story of loyalty, deceit, and the healing power of love, this classic fairy tale is exquisitely illustrated by Susan Jeffers. Luminous new jacket art, newly rendered interior art, and gold foil throughout enhance the wonderment of this glorious, largeformat reissue.

Disappointed that the new version added words! 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

If you were lucky enough to purchase this and the other books of this very unique children's series before 2000, then you got the version without words. I found this endearing because the books characters and the action taken by the little one reading the book needed no words to prompt him or her. Unfortunately the new version has words to accompany the pictures and kind of ruins it for me. Instead of "Find the Duck" it should be called "Your Mommy will read the words and tell you where the duck is!" And they also changed the size of the book (its now bigger and too heavy for the 2-4 age range of the book) and added color backgrounds to the covers. I still think the series makes a good gift.

New version is great 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a more sturdy version than the previous version. Adding words is great. And it doesn't mean that you have to read the words when going through this book. We have all adlibbed, haven't we? It can be just a search book or a read to them book. Use it any way you want. It's great. It's bright, colorful, and holds up to baby's use. There are so many things to talk in this book. A great feature for special needs children is the duck on each page for them to find. Small steps learning.

A RYE-OT!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I hear the review on NPR and bought 5 copies for kids niece, nephew and collegue's daughter....it is a HIT, even if a bit corn-ey. Only trouble is wee-people running around with bad puns intended.

Reading should be fun! 4 out of 5 stars.

Learning is great but lets not forget to allow the children to have fun! That's what being a kid is all about. Usually when adults read they read novels or non-fiction that interests them, for entertainment. Lets let the children have their fun too.
This is a fun book. It wasn't my favorit by any means but it was fun. My children also didn't seem to get all the humor.
I also recommend books by Beau Beaudoin who has become my children's favorit picture book author and illustrator. The Url King and Boetry
