Charlie Chick eats lots of barley and corn, which causes him to have a big belly and feet. Starting with the sound chip on the cover, through oversized pop-ups and a surprise ending, this book is fun--huge oversized fun.

This delightful 14-page book is sure to be a favorite with the little ones.

Armchair Interviews agrees.

Just Ducky! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Duck celebrates his birthday with animal friends in this beautifully illustrated book for younger children (from about age one to five). The animals bring him gifts:

"Duck got a ball that was pumped full of air. And a scuba mask, and a watch to wear And suntan oil to rub on his beak So it wouldn't burn and it wouldn't squeak."

The problem is that most of the toys are for water play, and Duck and his buddies live in the desert. Good thing Turtle brings the present that makes it possible for everyone to splash around and have fun!

The book is both simple and clever. The highlights here, though, are Jan Brett's vivid right-on illustrations of the Southwest: Big, bright, colorful, with warm tones, and enough detail to keep older toddlers interested. An absolute delight!

Great book to read to young children or for beginning reader 5 out of 5 stars.

Great book to read to young children or for a beginning reader

Editorial Review:

For his birthday, Duck's animal friends give him a swimming suit, a diving board, and a slide, but it is not until Tortoise arrives with an inflatable pool that they have something to swim in.

One of the best children's book I have ever read!! 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I am an avid reader and this is the one THE BEST children's book I have read. Great moral and ethical values for a child to learn at an early age. Loyalty, honestly, and integrity are more important than money, and position. Also, when life seems to turn against you, sometimes your friends turn and run also. Can't understand why this book has not become as popular as James and the Giant Peach which was made into a movie and written by the same author. This was far far better and I think should be required reading for every child. Also the words used by the author will probably challenge the average reader and might possibly require a dictionary sometimes to be nearby. Which is not bad either.

Unfortunately it does not seem to be in hard back. A book you'd want to keep in your library even after your children are grown. Mine are now 19 and 17, so I am buying it for gifts for other children. Excellent book!!!

Editorial Review:

Gawain is a loyal and true goose serving as chief guard of the royal treasury. He’d been happy enough with his life at home tending his garden and making sketches of architectural masterpieces. Now he’s being charged with stealing from the treasury. Gawain is certain of his innocence, but he can’t prove it. Will the real thief come forward to save Gawain, or will he live in exile forever?

Henry Learns a Lesson 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Henry, who is a duck by the way, was cooking supper for his friend Clara when he saw an ant in the kitchen. He was worried Clara would think he didn't keep a clean house, so he grabbed for the ant spray. But wait! He couldn't spray so close to the food he was cooking, so he got a frying pan and chased the ant around the kitchen. But the ant hid behind the stove, so Henry shut off the flame and pulled it away from the wall. No way was that ant going to get away.

But the ant ran into a crack in the wall. Henry got a hammer and pounded a hole in the wall until the hole was huge, then he saw the ant sitting on a pipe in the wall. He tried to hit the ant with the hammer, but he missed, hit the pipe and broke it. Poor Henry. And there is much more awful stuff that's going to happen to him, all because of that ant. In the end Henry learns a lesson and so will your child as you read him this delightful story which is so superbly illustrated.

Editorial Review:

Henry the duck tries all sorts of methods to rid his kitchen of an ant before his guest comes to supper.

Fun, imagination book! 5 out of 5 stars.

Reviewed by Cayden (age 3-1/2), Max (age 19-months) Aures and Mom for Reader Views (4/08)

"Ducks Don't Wear Socks" is about a serious girl named Emily who keeps encountering a duck wearing strange things like socks, boots, and a hat. Duck teaches Emily that it is okay to be silly sometimes instead of being serious all of the time.

Cayden: "What does `serious' mean?"

Cayden: "Why is he wearing socks? Ducks don't wear socks! They swim in water."
Max: "Socks!"

Cayden: "The duck is going to work?"

Cayden: "The duck is going to plow a field?"
Max: "Boots!"
Cayden: "Yes Max, the duck is wearing boots."

Cayden: "Look! There is a policeman- is the duck going to jail?"
Max: "Police."

Cayden: "The duck is wearing underwear! That is silly!"

Cayden: "Now Emily is being funny too! She is dressed up like a duck!"

Parent's comments:

"Ducks Don't Wear Socks" is a silly book that teaches children that even though it is okay to be serious, it is still important to have fun and laugh sometimes. My children both thought that it was hilarious that a duck was wearing all of these different articles of clothing. The illustrations are very entertaining as they show the duck engaged in a lot of non-traditional duck activities. The text is great and the humor will have your children laughing out loud!

Editorial Review:

Emily is a serious girl. She enjoys serious things like bird-watching, math, and playing the cello. But one day while she’s taking a walk, Emily runs into Duck, who is anything but serious . . .

“Duck,” asked Emily. “What are you wearing?”
“Socks!” yelled Duck.
“Ducks don’t wear socks,” replied Emily seriously.
“Cold feet!” yelled Duck, and off he went.

Through a series of humorous run-ins, Duck teaches Emily the importance of laughing—especially at oneself. A witty and comical debut picture book, this hilariously illustrated story will have readers laughing along with Emily.

No more diapers for me! That’s what toddlers will proudly proclaim after they hear this appealing tale of a lovable duck who takes the big step. When Piggy can’t come out to play because he’s busy sitting on the potty, Ducky realizes it’s time to grow up, too. A sweet and subtle story, with two huggable animals that children will embrace.

Love this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My 2 1/2 year old twins love it when I sing this song to them, so I was thrilled to find a book that illustrated it. The pictures are bright and fun, and it's always nice when the publisher includes the lyrics/music, as it does in this one.

I love the song - - I ADORE this book!! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I came across this book while searching for the lyrics to the 'Bushel & A Peck' song from the 'Guys and Dolls' soundtrack. My grandmother used to sing the song to my mother and my mother used to sing the song to my sister and I. In keeping tradition, we both now sing the song to our children and I was so excited when I found this book! The kids love the little duck characters as they sing the song through the vibrantly colored pages. We all 'doodle oodle oodle' through the end!! If you like the song - - you will absolutely love the book!!

Editorial Review:

A bushel!
And a peck!
A barrel!
And a heap!

Mutual affection grows between two flirty ducklings as they bill and coo around the farmyard in Rosemary Wells's young and sassy interpretation of a beloved Frank Loesser song. This calls for hugs around the neck while reading, so be sure to share it with someone special.

An important message for parents too! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I can't say enough about this book and its positive message about trusting your instincts as a parent and following your child's lead. Yes, this book has adorable photos and simple text that children will enjoy - but it also carries an empowering message that is important in today's fast-paced world of schedules and timetables of development for healthy babies and toddlers. Children will do what they are ready to do - when they are ready to do it, if we only let them. We are in such a rush for our babies to be born, to eat, to talk, to walk... to grow up. Have faith in them, offer a safe and loving environment and know that they will FLY when they are ready! I think this book makes a great gift for new parents as well as their babies and toddlers!

Editorial Review:

Mother Duck and Father Duck are worried about Ruby. As the littlest duckling of the family, she learns to eat and swim long after her four sisters and brothers. Father Duck frets that Ruby will never catch up, but Mother Duck calmly reassures him that Ruby will flourish -- "in her own time."

Readers of all ages who have ever felt like the biggest or the littlest, the slowest or the fastest, or somewhere in between, will root for Ruby as she takes wing toward independence, at last. Once you've met Ruby, you'll never forget her!

My 18 month old loves to read this book. He really enjoys opening all of the flaps to see what's behind them.

Editorial Review:

Help Johnny Tractor, Danny Dozer, and the rest of the machine characters as they work together in Deerfield Valley and on Merriweather Farm.

In this new board book with flaps, J.T. has a new friend at Merriweather Farm--a little duck--and what a pair they make! As J.T. goes about his work, the little duck goes too, imitating every job his giant friend performs. They collect apples, gather wheat, and make apple treats--just in time for the Apple Festival. But when apples spill everywhere just before the festival is to begin, will J.T. be able to pull everything together with a little help from his new friend?

Little Quack's Hide and Seek 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The book is funny and it was funny because he hid behind his mother. His sister hid in a log. His brother hid under a lily pad. His other brother hid in a tree. ANother brother hid in the leaves. His mother found him last.

One of our favorites! 5 out of 5 stars.

My little girl loved this book from about 9 months. She loved ducks so she was already inclined to like this book, but the cute and bright illustrations along with the fun story really captivated her. We read it over and over and a year later it still has not lost its charm on her. She is too young now for the addition and subtraction at the bottom of the pages, but I can see how they would offer an easy and fun way to learn math when she is a bit older.

Editorial Review:

Ready, set, go!

The ducklings are playing hide-and-seek. By the time Mama counts to ten, everyone has found a hiding place...except for Little Quack. Where should he hide?

Laugh along with the cutest duck family around as Little Quack's silly hiding place turns out to be the best of all! And use the QUACK-U-LATOR to help Mama count her quacky little ducklings.
