It took me forever to find the th volume of this series. I don't know if I was looking to hard. I had the 9th before I got this one.
Great story, things get stickier for Professor X and his X-men. I can't wait to see more characters from the X-men world.

Blue Beetle vs. the Reach -- Place Your Bets! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

From its inception, the latest volume of "Blue Beetle" has been one of the most underrated books being published by DC. It's humor and well-rounded supporting cast have become its trademarks at the hands of scribe John Rogers. But all good things must end and while Rogers' tenure on "Blue Beetle" ends, he goes out with a bang.

The fourth volume kicks off with Blue Beetle's tie-in to the "Sinestro Corps War" event that was running through both Green Lantern titles last year. Given the Reach's history with the Green Lanterns, the event ends up advancing the plot without getting bogged down by the event. From there, "Endgame" moves towards into payoff territory as two years of subplots and developments dovetail into Jamie's final confrontation with the villainous Reach. It's a fun ride to the finish, again with the trademark humor and cast that makes for one of the best conclusions I've read in a while. If you've read the first three volumes, you'll love this.

BKV Bows Out Gracefully 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book collects two three-issue arcs (Dead Means Dead & Live Fast) from "Runaways." These are creator Brian K. Vaughan's last six issues as the writer of "Runaways," and he really goes out on a high note with this emotional, character-driven, action packed TPB.

For the "Dead Means Dead" arc (the first three issues in this book), penciller Adrian Alphona is replaced by Mike Norton. While the regular colorist Christina Strain keeps the feel of the series consistent, I can't help but notice that Norton's art doesn't add as much to the story as Alphona's. Don't get me wrong, Norton is more than competent and his work surely doesn't take away from the story, but there was no way he could have matched the brilliance that Alphona brings to the table. BKV's writing is great here, though, as he gives a little bit of the spotlight to newcomer Xavin. However, these three issues feel kind of stretched, in my opinion. None of them stand alone, and they pretty much just feel like one extra long issue.

Now onto "Live Fast" (the last three issues). Great. Alphona is back on board and BKV is at the top of his game, giving subplots to each and every character but not taking away from the main story arc, which is a great--and dark--one. With this powerful, emotionally driven story, the incredible team of BKV and Alphona give us in three marvelous issues what it would take, in less masterful hands, an entire series to pull off. Also, it's interesting to note that BKV ends his run of this series with a little poignant nod from an old face that will leave everyone feeling really, really satisfied.

"Fantastic" Civil War Tie-In 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Johnny Storm in the hospital! Ben Grimm in France! Reed obsessed with his work and neglecting his family! Sue taking the opposition side in Civil War against her husband! It's just another day at the office for the Fantastic Four.

J. Michael Straczynski follows up his first two collections with this final installment. It's much stronger than his opening arc and on par with the second collection, the equally entertaining Fantastic Four: The Life Fantastic TPB. The final story in this Civil War collection is the epilogue written by Dwayne McDuffie, who promises more high octane excitement (with two surprise guest stars temporarily replacing Sue and Reed!). It's probably necessary to read the Civil War TPB to understand everything--but if you're a comic book fan you've already read that, right? No? OK, then start there and then pick up this collection to fill in the gaps on your favorite family. Collects Fantastic Four #538-543.

One member of the Fantastic Four lies hospitalized, a casualty of the Civil War that has fragmented the superhuman community! Another member of the team is secretly helping the opposition. It had to happen: Amid the tumult and tensions, the Fantastic Four break up! Who will toe the line, who will join the resistance, and who will leave the battlefield altogether? Is this the end for Marvel's First Family? Collects Fantastic Four #538-543.

Geek Indoctrination 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Two, two, two books in one! The blue side ("Heroes United") is an overview of the DC Super Friends toy line characters (Batman, Aquaman, Superman, Green Lantern, and the Flash). The flip side ("Attack of the Robot") does a good job of introducing basic conflict into the SuperFriends universe, with Lex Luthor inventing a giant robot with a kryptonite hand to menace Superman. The thing is, he's not just fighting Supes, he's fighting the whole team and teamwork always wins. Good morals, art in the style of the toy line, and a nice streamlined story. Bonus points for the little stand-up figures in the middle of the book for solo play. I recommend lamination for those bad boys--they're kind of flimsy. The only bad thing is the boys club mentality; despite DC Comics' push for the "Trinity" of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, the Amazon is nowhere to be found. I hope she shows up soon--my son actually complained.

Worthy Follow-up to Jenkins's "The Sentry" Mini-Series 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This "New Avengers" trade paperback adds some interesting twists to the Sentry mythos and firmly entrenches the Sentry into the Marvel Universe. If you were a fan of Paul Jenkins's original Marvel Knights mini-series (The Sentry), then this book is necessary reading. It's less about the New Avengers than the Sentry, so if you're looking to see Wolverine or Iron Man in action, this one might not do it for you.

Graphic SF Reader 4 out of 5 stars.

Coming out of the mini-series a while back, the Avengers have to work out what to do with the most powerful hero going, who is serious schizoid, and his own and everybody else's worst enemy.

So, of course they sign him up, after he helps keep them alive in the Breakout.

This does not mean he will not destroy the planet afterwards, but that is a risk they have to take, unfortunately.

so far, the worst of the ultimate spider-man books... 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

ultimate spider-man by bendis and bagley is one of the best series out there. not as much action and non-stop bad guy fighting, but a good mix of that and a lot of peter parker being a teenager with problems (girls, bullies, being grounded, etc.) along with his spidey life.
the series is great great great. only a few minor things that could be better:
1. i don't like how nick fury comes in and tells spider-man he's going to work his whole life for him and shield. the idea of peter being...trapped in a web? haha...well it isn't too cool. superheroes need to fight the good fight because they want to, not because shield will go and take away their superpowers (as fury has threatened) if they don't comply. plus the issues where the ultimates come in aren't that great, the whole series gets hijacked by them and not a lot of spidey. imo, the ultimates are easily the worst part of the ultimate universe. beyond ultimate spider-man and the ultimate fantastic four the ultimate universe isn't too great.
2. bendis needs to cut down on the tuchas talk. seriously if parker grew up in nyc today he'd more likely speak spanglish than yanglish.
3. geldoff.

new avengers 4 out of 5 stars.

I was never really an Avengers fan, but this new incarnation is a pretty good one. Wolverine and Spider-Man are two of my favorite characters. I really like what they've done with Captain America and Iron Man. Luke Cage and Spider Woman are new to me, but I can really get into them. It's just the start of what could be something really great.

Great re-working of classic title 5 out of 5 stars.

If you love Bendis you will love this title. The way that characters come together is terrific and the use of classic criminals is terrific. The gathering of this group of avengers has troubled some (they think of it as a Marvel JLA), but this story really makes it work. I personally think this is Bendis's best work. I think the series has a small drop-off after this initial explosion, but this is modern Marvel comics at its best. Finch has amazing artwork. You'll love all that comes out of this.

Make Mine...something else 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Didnt really like this one too much. Sure, we all knew Gwen was going to die, it was Just a matter of when. Carnage, Much like Venom, was reduced to a much weaker version of his mainstream counterpart. Very Bad move. I do not care for whats implied with this "Ben Riely" charecter.. Come on Marvel , just say no to clones.

Bendis stops trying. (Minor Spoilers) 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I'm a long time Spider-Man fan. My first comic book was a Marvel Tales reprint of an older Spider-Man issue. I've read all the Essential Spider-Man volumes in print thus far. While I'm not a fan of Spider-Man joining the Avengers or any of that nonsense, I love the character and what he represents.

I liked Bendis run on Daredevil. I felt it was the closest to Miller's in tone, and Maleev's art was some of my favorite in any comic, superhero or otherwise.

I give that introduction to make it clear I'm not bashing Bendis. This volume was the reason I've quit reading Ultimate Spider-Man. The "Hollywood" story was a stretch, but most of the stories that preceded that were very solid. They 'felt' like a good Spider-Man yarn: a young teenager, part-time worker at the Daily Buge newspaper and bookworm at school, and a masked vigilante by night, constantly forced to maintain a balance between his seperate worlds. His supporting cast consisted of his Aunt May, girlfriend Mary Jane Watson, and orphaned housemate Gwen Stacy. Each has a counterpart in the 'real' Marvel universe, and each has a history associated with that character.

Ultimate Gwen Stacy was a smart aleck, not unlike Peter in his costume. She's fiercly independent, though that brashness same hides a vulnerable side. She was by far the most interesting cast member outside of Peter himself, since Mary had been reduced to a part-time damsel in distress and full-time worrier. Without a thought, the science experiment gone awry named Carnage killed Gwen as if Bendis had to match the fate of one univese's counterpart to the other.

Ignoring the fact that Ultimate Carnage was an experiment born from the "Venom" arc and has no real human identity like the serial killer Cletus Cassidy, and ignoring that the climactic battle between Carnage and Spider-Man lasts only a few pages and doesn't give the rage Peter must be feeling due justice, Gwen's death feels placed; it's not natural, and it ignores the multitude of stories that could have been told with Gwen alive. And in subsequent volumes, her death goes almost unaddressed until very recently.

The reason I consider this volume such a misfire - the main reason - is what I stated earlier: Gwen had potential, and for all of that potential to be squandered in such a mediocre Frankenstienesque story... it's unfortunate. It's sad that Gwen had to be the victim for nothing other than cheap shock value, when she could've been so much more, when there (apparently) wasn't a publisher mandate to keep Peter unmarried or unattached.
