Another team of Avengers and the return of Ultron 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This volume collects the first six issues of Marvel's 2007 "Mighty Avengers" launch. Tony Stark/Iron Man and Carol Danvers/Ms. Marvel assemble yet another new team of Avengers including Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Janet Van Dyne/Wasp, Simon Williams/Wonder Man, Ares and the Sentry. Having first appearing in 1968's Avengers #54, in this plotline the maniacal robot Ultron returns to Earth to destroy all organic life. Ultron assumes Iron Man's body before changing into another familar form and hastening Earth's demise. A helicarrier crash leaves Natasha as temporary head of S.H.I.E.L.D. as the heroes try to stop Ultron. Brian Michael Bendis and Frank Cho are the writer and penciler/inker, respectively. Though the story is above-average for this sort of six-issue superhero arc, Bendis' dialogue is marred by intermittent thought balloons that grow tiresome. Frank Cho's art is superb, most notably for a few characters.

Editorial Review:

The wait is over!! The Mighty Avengers assemble!! Gathered together to be the greatest Avengers team ever, but who picked them - and why?! And which A-list Avengers villain returns, revamped and reloaded for the ultimate revenge? Big super-hero adventures from the multi-award winning team of Bendis and Cho. Collects Mighty Avengers #1-6.

review for all four volumes 5 out of 5 stars.

DC's 52 was highly ambitious, which made me more than a little nervous, since projects as big as these usually fall flat. With the big three missing, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, DC picks up some acilliary characters and kind of turns them into the modern age superheroes. Really DC is trying to kick start some other books. But they do a good job, especially since there is a book a week. Bravo gentlemen.

Editorial Review:

After the INFINITE CRISIS, the DC Universe spent a year without Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman -- a year in which those heroes were needed more than ever as the fate of the world hung in the balance.

52 combines the brightest and best talents from the comic book writing field, Geoff Johns (INFINITE CRISIS), Grant Morrison (ALL STAR SUPERMAN), Greg Rucka (WONDER WOMAN) and Mark Waid (KINGDOM COME), working together with the world's finest artists to tell the tale of a world awakening from a nightmare to face a new day.

The DC Universe's most eventful year continues in this latest volume of the acclaimed series with Booster Gold, Renee Montoya, Black Adam, The Elongated Man, Animal Man, Lobo, Starfire and Adam Strange taking center stage.

great addition 5 out of 5 stars.

THis is a great addition to both Peter's story and the Marvel Civil War storyline. I'd like to go on about it, but there isn't much I can say that hasn't been said.

outstanding story 5 out of 5 stars.

Spider-Man Civil War is a must have for any new or old Spider-Man fan. The story of Peter Parker's struggle with the law and what is right or wrong was incredible. I actually became a regular Spider-Man comic book collector from reading this book. If you liked this graphic novel I would also suggest Spider-Man: Back in Black.

Editorial Review:

Life couldn't be more complicated - or more dangerous - for Peter Parker. After rushing to the aftermath of the Stamford Massacre to offer aid to its victims, Peter travels with Tony Stark to Washington, D.C., and the White House - where the enactment of the Super Hero Registration Act appears imminent. As the Marvel Universe braces for the implications of legislation that will forever change the societal status of super heroes, Peter is forced to make an important personal decision - maybe the most important decision of his life. As Civil War tears apart the super hero community, will Spidey stay true to that decision? Collects Amazing Spider-Man #532-538.

Il capolavoro di Claremont e Byrne 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Editorial Review:

Gathered together by Professor Charles Xavier to protect a world that fears and hates them, the X-Men had fought many battles, been on adventures that spanned galaxies, grappled enemies of limitless might, but none of this could prepare them for the most shocking struggle they would ever face. One of their own members, Jean Grey, has gained power beyond all comprehension, and that power has corrupted her absolutely! Now they must decide if the life of the woman they cherish is worth the existence of the entire universe! Collects X-Men #129-137.

Still counting to nowhere 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

It's common knowledge that Countdown is in no way, shape, or form close to being anywhere near as good as it's weekly series predecessor 52, and this third collected volume is yet more proof of that. If anything, these issues are slightly better (but just barely) than the ones that came before them, as things finally start to get going. Well, somewhat. The pro-longed search for Ray Palmer finally finds the man found, while the other participants of Countdown (Jimmy Olsen, Mary Marvel, Monarch, and more) continue their march towards Final Crisis. While things do pick up very little story-wise, the artwork remains inconsistent and rushed looking, and Paul Dini's overall story just doesn't seem that enthralling, and the characters still seem to be not all that worthy to really care for. If for some reason you've actually been enjoying Countdown to Final Crisis, this is pretty much more of the same, so by all means jump in. If you haven't on the other hand, you aren't missing much in the least.

The League's Rebirth 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

One day, early in 1996, Grant Morrison wondered if DC would like to relaunch the Justice League. The sales of the Justice League have fallen off. The League was now populated with second and third tier characters in the DCU. Mr. Morrison's plans were simple. He wanted the A list League. When people think of the Justice League, he said in interviews, they think of DC's big guns, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and of course, J'onn J'onz, the Martian Manhunter. That's what he wanted to do. He wanted to do big, epic superhero stories. DC aquiesced. Morrison once said that had he asked DC the next day, they probably would have rejected it.

It's a good thing DC said yes. Because Morrison's relaunch, titled "JLA" would turn out to be DC's biggest selling title of the 1990's hands down. And, true to Morrison's word, he DID pull out the stops. In the first four issues alone, the League tangled with the Hyperclan, an intergalactic superteam (with [shock!] nefarious plans for Earth). Then the JLA would accept a prospective new heroine Tomorrow Woman and prevent a mutiny in heaven and face their old foe, the Key.

The art by Howard Porter, John Dell and others was terrific. But the standout was Morrison. I vividly recall finishing issue #2 when the Hyperclan seemingly vanquished the JLA and I was floored. I couldn't wait for issue #3! Mr. Morrison knows how to write a cliff hanger. Not only that, he knows the JLA's core characters so well that nothing seems forced. His stories move along with the force of a runaway locomotive. This is popcorn reading at it's absolute best.

This is a must own if you're a fan of the JLA or any of the core characters. A comics classic. 5 Stars.

A great book, but DC, PLEASE use better paper! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This really is a great book. Johns knows what Earth-2 junkies like myself want out of a comic book. But the paper quality in this is just awful for a hardcover collection. It's glossy, yes, but it's really thin. I don't know why DC does this and the paper quality selection seems to be completely random from book to book. It's the one thing that Marvel gets right over DC almost every time.

Editorial Review:

Geoff Johns, the critically acclaimed writer of INFINITE CRISIS ushers in the next generation of the world's first super-team that inspired all of the others.

Jeph Loeb's swan song, thankfully 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Up until this storyarc, I pretty much enjoyed Jeph Loeb's run on the high selling Superman/Batman series, but sadly, Loeb's final arc on the title is just loaded with plot holes and hard to understand. Vengeance finds a group called the Maximums hunting down Superman and Batman because they believe the two iconic heroes murdered one of their own. Naturally, this is not the case, and soon enough Bizarro is on the scene, along with "Batzarro" (I kid you not), the Joker, and Mr. Mxyzptlk. What happens next in Vengeance is incredibly hard to follow as Loeb appears to shift things into high gear, but things never take off. His renditions of Supes and Bats are more wooden here than ever before, and the story inconsistencies and additional appearances out of nowhere just boggle the mind. Ed McGuinness, who teamed with Loeb when Superman/Batman launched, returns to lend his pencil work with Dexter Vines on inks, may be too cartoony for some, but it's undoubtedly the highlight of this TPB. This ended up being Loeb's last arc on the title before taking work once again with Marvel, so hopefully the otherwise talented and celebrated writer has had his batteries recharged.

Editorial Review:

The original superstar team of Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuiness return for one of the most talked about storylines of the year.

The fourth volume of the enormously popular SUPERMAN/BATMAN series finds our heroes confronting a new challenge: The Maximums, a group of super-heroes closely tied to the U.S. Government. Someone has killed one of their team, and the Maximums are on the hunt for the murderer. The trouble is, there are two names on the top of their list: Superman and Batman!
