An Abundance of Fun 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Picking up a book by John Green is a guaranteed treat; you know you are going to become friends with a host of teens who will make you laugh, make you think, and make you recognize yourself in them. An Abundance of Katherines is no exception, and it's a fun ride from the first pages.

Colin Singleton is a child prodigy who wants to make his mark in the world and prove that he really is the genius everyone's expected him to be. To that end, he's working on a Theorem that will predict how relationships will go, and he has the experience to draw from: Colin has dated 19 girls, all of them have dumped him, and all of them have been named Katherine. So when Katherine #19 dumps him, Colin's best friend Hassan talks him into a road trip designed to clear Colin's head so he can focus. What they actually find, however, is Gutstop, Tennessee, and a girl named Lindsey who is perfectly happy to remain there for the rest of her life. After striking up a friendship with Lindsey, her mother invites the boys to stay in Gutshot and work for her for the summer. What follows is a series of interviews, hornets, new girlfriends, a fight, and a secret hiding place as the boys learn more about themselves than they'd figured they ever would.

Green is a terrific author who knows just how to enliven a story with humor and then bring it back to the original concept subtly. I loved that Green didn't make all the Tennesseans seem like simple-minded hicks (being from Tennessee, this is a particular irritation of mine). Green is obviously a very smart man, and I loved the footnotes that explained the languages used and gave fascinating details about the conversations. My ability to imagine one boy falling for nineteen Katherines was sorely stretched, though; it was the one point of the book that kept sticking me and pulling me out of the story. But other than that, I laughed and enjoyed this book tremendously, and I would give it a solid 4.5 stars. Recommended for readers of all ages who love a good road trip tale.

Everyone can make a difference. 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Beatrice's Goat is a great way to introduce children to the golden rule: Treat others as you would like to be treated.
Everyone with even a little gift can make a huge difference in the lives of many people. I highly recommend this book to parents and teachers!

Editorial Review:

More than anything, Beatrice longs to be a schoolgirl. But in her small African village, only children who can afford uniforms and books can go to school. Beatrice knows that with six children to care for, her family is much too poor.

But then Beatrice receives a wonderful gift from some people far away -- a goat! Fat and sleek as a ripe mango, Mugisa (which means "luck") gives milk that Beatrice can sell. With Mugisa's help, it looks as if Beatrice's dream may come true after all.

Page McBrier and Lori Lohstoeter beautifully recount this true story about how one child, given the right tools, is able to lift her family out of poverty. Thanks to Heifer Project International -- a charitable organization that donates livestock to poor communities around the world -- other families like Beatrice's will also have a chance to change their lives.

Shallow 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The characters in this book are spiteful, manipulative, and shallow. But even worse than that, I feel sorry for them, and sorry for any girl who feels like she has to be fake in order to have friends. How terrible that people won't like them for who they really are.. and how awful that must feel to think that one wrong move and your best friend is now your worst enemy. The author of these books has glorified being cruel and encouraged young girls to be scared of who they are. What a heartbreaking message to send girls as they try to discover who they are. Being kind, compassionate, funny, adventurous -these are the sort of things that maintain a friendship. Under all the glam and the glitz, Massie's character seems so lonely. She is afraid to be real with her friends, her family, and herself. Girls thinking of buying this book: you are better than this. Love yourself enough to be proud of who you are and read books that encourage you to be the incredible girl you are! Parents, if you love your daughter, pay her not to read this.

Editorial Review:

The Clique is back ...Massie Block - Still gorgeous. Still trendsetting. Still ruling the social scene at school...she hopes. To keep her spot at the top, Massie decides to throw the school's first boy/girl Halloween party. But her parents are making her invite the entire grade AND share the party with Claire. She's not sure which is scarier...Dylan Marvil - Lost the weight. Kept the attitude. Plans to use her new look to snag a cute guy. Kristen Gregory - Clothes are for sharing. Guys aren't. Likes the same guy Dylan does. Will do whatever it takes to get him. Alicia Rivera - With the Clique unravelling faster than last season's Burberry sweater, is it time for Alicia to stage her takeover? Claire Lyons: Still out. Wants in. Seriously needs to lose those Keds.

Sibling Rivalry 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

In Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing (Bantam, 1972), Judy Blume introduces Peter, an average fourth grader, living in an apartment in New York City with his parents; his little brother, Fudge; and his newly acquired turtle, Dribble. Three-year-old Fudge constantly creates drama in this otherwise quiet family, whether he is ruining his father's career or disrupting the family dinner. Fudge always seems to attract some type of attention from adults--whether for his cute face or his mischievous behavior. By comparison, Peter feels like a fourth grade nothing. It's not easy for Peter to love his little brother, who always seems to be the center of attention. As Fudge's trouble-making habits escalate, Peter's life is increasingly affected. Fudge destroys the school project that Peter and his friends labored over for weeks, and the toddler can't seem to keep away from Peter's beloved pet turtle. But when Fudge's actions bring on a family disaster, Peter learns that he is more than a fourth-grade nothing in the eyes of his family.

Readers will identify with scenes from Peter's everyday family life. This book is for every kid who leads an ordinary existence, dealing with parents, siblings, homework, and know-it-alls.

Editorial Review:

Two is a crowd when Peter and his four-year-old brother, Fudge, are in the same room. Grown-ups think Fudge is absolutely adorable, but Peter and his pet turtle, Dribble, know the truth. Fudge is actually a tiny terror in disguise, causing mischief everywhere he goes.

The Pretty Committee Strikes Back-Review 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is all about a trip to Lake Placid. On this trip the girls from OCD and the Briarwood Boys go together, and everyone has their secret crushes. Before the trip Massie(the leader of the "pretty committee") starts M.U.C.K. This is Massie's Underground Clinic for Kissing, but she has never kissed anyone before. Then on the trip problems start occuring.

Kristen's parents can't afford to pay for the trip and when Massie, Alicia, and Dylan ask to pay Kristen declines. Also, in The Invasion of the Boy Snatchers, Claire kissed Josh and now Cam isn't talking to her. Will Cam ever forgive Claire? Will Massie get her first kiss? This page-turner is a great book and I would reccomend it.

Editorial Review:

A tragic haircut leaves Kristen looking manlier than a New York Jets linebacker. Will she be condemned to a season of trying to find cute hats when, as everyone knows, hats are so over? Meanwhile, Claire got everything she wants--new camo converse high-tops, bags and bags of gummies, and best of all, her first ever cell phone, from Massie. Although Claire's now an official member of the Clique, presents don't matter to her--all she really wants is her first kiss from Cam, of course!

"She's Done it Again" 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It's a new year at Octavian Country Day Middle School, and this year brings up whole new drama. A new character Skye Hamilton (the eighth grade alpha), is in charge of who gets the key to the "forgotten" room. The key has been passed down from alpha to alpha. Of course Massie thinks she will get it. But everything turns around when Skye decides to do a scavenger hunt for the key. Massie cannot let it get into the wrong hands, like an LBR. (loser beyond repair) She gets so worried along the book that she doesn't even insult people with her witty jokes! This book is by far one of my favorite Clique books, because it keeps you so entertained. Especially when each clique gets so close to find to key! This book also has a ton of detail, and it is just the type of book you just can't put down! I would highly recommend this book but only if you are a girl from the ages 11-16, and make sure that you have read the previous books in the series because then it will make a lot more sense.

Editorial Review:

Massie Block: Massie is the uncontested ruler of The Clique and the rest of the social scene at Octavian Country Day, an exclusive private school in Westchester County, New York. Claire Lyons: Has finally arrived! She's in the Clique and adored by super-cute Briarwood boy Cam. But will she be able to stay in Massie's inner circle? Alicia Rivera: As sneaky as she is beautiful, Alicia would love to take Massie's throne one day. She just might do it. Dylan Marvil: Divides her time between sucking up to Massie and sucking down Atkin's shakes to try to get rid of the extra fifteen pounds that won't seem to leave her butt alone. Kristen Gregory: She's smart, hardworking and will insult you to tears faster than you can say "scholarship kid." The Clique... The only thing harder than getting in is staying in.

Fun and emotionally educational 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

A very fun and whimsical story that illustrates Lilly's emotional experience and how she deals with her emotions. I highly recommend. My 3 year old son loves it, and is a common birthday gift, especially for girls.

Adorable, funny book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book, especially if you have an independent, free-thinking, stong-willed little person to share this with. Lilly is a spunky little mouse that exhibits typical traits of every 4, 5 and 6 year old. This is one book that I don't mind reading over and over again.

Editorial Review:

Lilly loves everything about school, especially her cool teacher, Mr. Slinger. But when Lilly brings her purple plastic purse and its treasures to school and can't wait until sharing time, Mr. Slinger confiscates her prized possessions. Lilly's fury leads to revenge and then to remorse and she sets out to make amends.

Lilly, the star of Chester's Way and Julius, the Baby of the World, is back. And this time she has her name in the title - something she's wanted all along. If you thought Lilly was funny before, you are in for a treat. So hurry up and start reading. Lilly can't wait for you to find out more about her.

Best set for reluctant readers 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I had a heck of a time getting my six year old to WANT to read anything. It was constant whining and "do I have to?". I crossed one of these books by chance at my workplace and brought it home. Now my daughter can't get enough and begs to read. She reads in the car in the morning and at bedtime. In a few short months she has really built up her vocabulary and reading proficiency. I don't know how this author figured it out, but he knows what keeps a child engaged! I got the whole set of books and she read through them, a couple chapters at a time, over the summer.

Great book for kids! 5 out of 5 stars.

Here's my 9-year-old son's review:

I think this book is appropriate for kids, because it has funny stories about kids you don't see every day and kids who do strange but hilarious things. It's even more fun that the author uses himself as a character in the book - the yard teacher. He must have thought the book through really well, because it's full of interesting details. I read all three books in 5 evenings.

Alicia tap dances on Massie's last nerve 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Alicia creates her own clique that imitates Massie's pretty committee. She is pretty smug after she cheats her way into victory with Olivia. She and Olivia may have fooled the judges, but they didn't fool Massie! The pretty committee is mad and after revenge. That's just what they get! Massie's revenge humiliates Alicia beyond all reason and in the blink of an eye she manipulate and threatens the whole rest of the pretty coommittee onto her side, leaving Massie all alone. Revenge of the wannabes;the thrilling third book in the clique series by Lisi Harrison is told in Alicia's point of view.

Editorial Review:

pr`es Thanksgiving. Weeks before Christmas. Alicia and Olivia are on their way to Manhattan so the Teen People editors can do a story on them about winning the Octavian Country Day uniform design contest. When Massie finally processes that the girls who hijacked her victory are also modeling for Teen People, she is livid. It should have been her. 'Ehmagod, what will everyone think when they find out it wasn't me who was asked to model? I will be SO over.' Massie decides it's time to get revenge. This snake can not lay idle in the weeds for one more second. Kristen and Dylan throw out terrible 'revenge' suggestions and Massie vetoes them all. She will think of something! But first she has to go home and exfoliate. The social minefields of Westchester County's most privileged middle school girls drive the page-turning action of this addictive series, set in New York City's most elite suburban county. The Clique . . . the only thing harder than getting in is staying in.

An Ageless Tale 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The Hundred Dresses

I read The Hundred Dresses while I was growing up. Over the years I have often thought of poor Wanda, who wore the same shabby dress, every day to school.

Wanda claimed to have a hundred dresses, all beautiful and all lined up in her closet. Peggy would wait each morning to see Wanda coming from the poor-side-of-town. She would taunt her, "Wanda, tell us about your one hundred dresses. Maddie felt bad going along with Wanda, but she was poor herself and wearing Peggy's hand-me-downs. Maddie was afraid that if she said anything, the teasing would turn to her.

Wanda proudly described her one hundred dresses, the red one, the green one and the blue one. Each of the children wondered why Wanda wore the same dress each day, when she had so many beautiful dresses.

As a young girl from a large family, I wore hand-me-down clothing from others in my school or church. I could relate to Maddie, who didn't like the teasing, but was afraid to speak up.

For a church activity, the church women were given a copy of the book The Hundred Dresses. After reading the book, we would pass on our copy to the next person on the list. One month later, we had an activity where we brought in new or gently used dresses to donate to a women's shelter. The dresses were folded neatly, placed in large, sealed bags and marked with the size. These dresses will be donated to women, so they can look their best while job hunting.

We discussed this book, and how important it is to fit in. We also discussed the importance of acceptance.

Editorial Review:

Never out of print since its 1944 publication, this tender story offers readers of all ages a timeless message of compassion and understanding. At its heart is Wanda Petronski, an immigrant girl in an American school, who is ridiculed for wearing the same faded blue dress every day. When she tells her classmates that she has one hundred dresses at home, she unwittingly triggers a game of teasing that eventually ends in a lesson for all.

In restoring the reproduction of Louis Slobodkin's artwork, this new edition recaptures the original vivid color. And to celebrate the book's enhanced beauty, Helena Estes, the daughter of the author, has written a new letter to readers about the true story behind The Hundred Dresses.
