All teen and young adult survivors need this workbook 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 29 people found this review helpful.

This workbook is just excellent! I have trouble putting it down! It manages to be relevant to a wide variety of teens, without being too technical, too cutesy, or too preachy. Each exercise is short (2-3 pages) but challenging. There are also quotes from teen survivors and sidebars that point out problem behaviors common in abuse survivors without being judgmental. As a college student, I'm a little too old to be the intended audience of this book (all the teens mentioned in here are between the ages of 13-18), but as someone who still has to deal with her parents on a regular basis, I appreciated that lots of the exercises here dealt with family matters under the assumption that you're still living and dealing with your family, something that's not in many of the adult books. Guys might not like that pretty much all the pronouns are "she" and "her", but otherwise it's still a very relevant book for every teen survivor. It can be completed by yourself, in a group, or as part of therapy. Topics covered include emotions and emotional manipulation, keeping secrets, impulsive behaviors, how to get along with other people, sex, suicide, and commitment to recovery. The emphasis is not on "name your disorder" but on returning to emotional health. Even if you have to make a secret trip to the bookstore and hide this book in the back of your closet, it's worth it.

Editorial Review:

At least one in four girls and one in seven boys endure some form of sexual abuse. And most of these sexual trauma survivors find the early adult years are crucial for recovery. During this time they have the best combination of motivation, capacity for insight, and support to begin the process of healing. Written by a psychologist who works with sexually abused teens, It Happened to Me helps young adults reflect on what happened, examine its impact on their lives, and begin to develop healthy relationships.

Editorial Review:

Lately I feel like an astronaut out on a space walk – constantly praying the tube attaching me to the ship doesn’t snap and send me flying into outer darkness.

The only good thing about having a mother with cancer is that people are willing to let you get away with pretty much anything. Like failing a Latin test. Or being late to class. Or skipping tennis practice. But there’s one thing Edna’s fairly certain even she can’t get away with – her burgeoning romance with Mr. Howland, her fourth-period Ceramics teacher. That day when Mr. Howland kissed her in his office, she felt like she was floating, like she could levitate right out of her skin. It’s Mr. Howland, with his tousled blond hair and his beautiful guitar and his spot-on impression of Dracula, who makes Edna feel happy for the first time in a long time. But what does Mr. Howland want? And how does Edna really feel – about her mother, about Mr. Howland, about moving forward?

Set in New Jersey in the 1980s, this is a piercing story about decisions both heart-wrenching and wonderful, and how life and love so often lead us down unexpected paths.

My Personal Favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have read literally TONS of young adult fiction novels and I would have to say that this is my favorite along with When Kambia Elaine Flew In From Neptune by Lori Aurelia Williams and Ms. Frank's other book, Life Is Funny. I am fourteen years old currently but at the time I read this I was twelve almost thirteen and it has still resonated with me. I stayed up an entire night to read the book which was over two hundred pages but I couldn't stop. I felt a great desire to know what was happening next and I couldn't stop.
It is an incredibly well written book and has one of the most powerful plots I have EVER come across. It shows the crippling horror of abuse to an innocent child and his experiences growing old from a broken home. I would reccomend it to anyone age twelve and over who are tired of fluffy marshmallow plots of some of the books for teens today.

Editorial Review:

You try not to think. You try not to imagine, but then those cracks pop up, and these flashes squeeze right through. At first, some of it's not too bad, and you get stupid, maybe even wanting a little more, but then you pull yourself together, knowing what all is likely going to ooze out if you're not careful....

Fifteen-year-old America has been nowhere, has been nobody. Separated from his foster mother. A runaway. A patient. Without love. Without hope. And, eventually, without the will to live.

Until Dr. B. steps in. To listen. To explore. And to find within America both the story and the boy who are lost.

Magical, fantastic, completely bewitching! 5 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book.Once agian francesca writes a poetic prose on topics that are very sensitive. Franseca tells the story of laurel. A girl who lives underneath the famous hollywood sign with her mother, a once beautiful woman that now cleans incessantly to keep the "disease" away. In the meantime laurel is thrown into situations of family, love, sex, and turmoil all to learn the one thing she should have learned from the beginning. To learn that in order to love, you must first learn to love yourself.

Read this book. Block makees you believe the most endearing lesson of all. The power of love.

Editorial Review:

After the death of her father, Laurel is haunted by a legacy of family secrets, hidden shame, and shattered glass. Immersing herself in the heady rhythms of a city that is like something wild, caged, and pacing, Laurel tries to lose herself. But when she runs away from the past, she discovers a passion so powerful, it brings her roundabout and face-to-face with the demons she wants to avoid.

In a stunning departure from her enormously popular Weetzie Bat books, Francesca Lia Block weaves a darkly exhilarating tale of shattered passions and family secrets.

why is this book in the sexual abuse section? 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It is not about sexual abuse/rape. I don't think there's even a mention of it.

Anyway, I read this when I was about 13 and liked it a lot. It's about a white girl who falls in love with a black guy and how their friends and families have more of a negative reaction than they would expect. I guess it's kind of an "issue" book, but it is well-written and the relationship between the boy and the girl is sweet, believable, and unique. They're not stock characters who were just invented so the author could make a point.

I feel like I should mention, it doesn't have a happy ending.

If You Come Softly 5 out of 5 stars.

In this book there's a teenage girl named Ellie who falls in love with a another boy her age, named Jeremiah. In this book, it is filled with romance and love which teaches you so much in life. The ending in this book really does teach you about life, even though it is sad, it is a really great way to end this book. I couldn't imagine another ending for this book that makes you think about your life and how much you love the people around you. This book got me into all of Jacqueline Woodson's books. - Kana

Editorial Review:

Miah and Ellie are in love. Theirs is a rare and special first love. But the people around them don’t see it that way. They can only see black and white: Miah is black, Ellie is white, and Jewish; and their love, no matter how real, is too strange and scary for the world they live in.

Suzanne Phillips is a wonderful writer. This book is filled with honest, true and riveting details. You really feel for Chloe. I couldn't put it down. The writing is stunning. A book that stays with you long after you've finished. You should definately read this one!

Gritty and engrossing 4 out of 5 stars.

This is an interesting, workman-like addition to young adult literature. It has elements of mystery and family that make it more than just another gloomy look at a grim character in bleak circumstances. Like E.R. Frank's "America," "Chloe Doe" reveals the ache of its title character. Teen prostitution will make some readers uneasy, as will the appropriately realistic language, and such readers will seek out other material. The book is a quick read, even for people who don't normally enjoy reading. I can easily see teen readers of "A Child Called It" looking to this title.

Editorial Review:

Chloe Doe chronicles a 17-year-old girl's tumultuous path to becoming a prostitute and her ultimate transformation back into mainstream society. During her therapy at Madeline Parker Institute for Girls, Chloe slowly reveals aspects of her painful past--the stepfather who abused her sister, the mother who let it all happen, the need to love and be loved--and faces the future she finally decides to build for herself. Told in heart-wrenching language that's sometimes caustic, often ironic, and always authentic, Chloe Doe is certain to find a place among classics about teens that triumph over their loneliness and desperation to find hope.

Unbelievable 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Sarah Weeks did a wonderful job writing this novel. In this novel there is a boy named Jamie Reardon. At the beginning of this book his dad leaves him and his mom at home alone. After that Jamie's aunt has an accident at her work which causes her to loose her memory. So now they have to move to Aunt Sapphy's trailer to be with her. While they live there Jamie makes a friend and her name is Audrey. Audrey claims that she can hypnotize people. Through this story Jamie and his mom try to find the 'magic trigger' to make her remember. They want to help her 'jump the scratch.' Like on a record player, the needle needs to 'jump the scratch.' I really liked this book. Even thought the end it a little bit predictable, it is still surprising. I recommend this book for all young readers because I liked it a lot.

Editorial Review:

Jamie Reardon has always heard that bad things come in threes. So after his cat, Mister, dies, his father leaves, and his aunt Sapphy has an accident that causes her memory to develop a skip, Jamie hopes his life will go back to being as normal as cornflakes. But unfortunately there's one more bad thing in store for Jamie—something he'd give anything to be able to forget—and this one leaves him feeling like a stranger to himself. Jamie tries in vain to find the magic trigger that will help Sapphy's memory jump the scratch, but in the end it's Aunt Sapphy who, along with a curious girl named Audrey Krouch, helps Jamie unravel the mysteries of memory and jump the scratch in his own life.

Captivating Tragic Tale 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I use this in my Adolescent Literature course, and the kids eat it up. Atkins is able to tell the story of a boy who is kidnapped and raped without being graphic at all and still keep teens wanting to read on. This is like Deep End of the Ocean for teens. It's about the family trying to heal and get to know each other again, with the mystery of what actually happened intertwined.

Readers must understand that this is only the first stage. The tale doesn't show the counseling that would be needed, but one would figure that would come next.

Editorial Review:

Two years ago, Jeff Hart was kidnapped at knifepoint. Now his kidnapper is releasing him to return home. But when Jeff finds his family, he feels shell-shocked and unable to tell anyone what happened. He can't believe that anyone-not even his family or friends-will understand what he went through. Jeff isn't the same person he was before, and he never will be again.

"An accomplished, intense, and powerful first novel." (Kirkus Reviews)

A gripping tale so well-written 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

What's most amazing about this book, to me, is that it has all of the insight and vivid detail you'd expect from a prolific writer like Lipsyte, but he's captured the tone and pacing you'd expect to encounter in a high school. He truly immersed himself in the culture of high school and high-level high school sports, and he places the reader right there in the locker room and in conversations in a way you'd swear you were listening to two 17-year-olds talk.

The book is also an incredible tool in the fights against cruel hazing and doping. Without beating you over the head with the message, Lipsyte shows everything that is wrong with the darkest sides of sports. A must-read for every high school athlete.

Editorial Review:

What's it mean to think team? It means you don't talk team business with anybody who isn't on the team. It means whatever happens inside the team stays inside. It means you can only trust a brother Raider. Any questions?

At Nearmont High School, football stars are treated like royalty, and Matt Rydek has just ascended to the throne. He's got it all: hot girls, chill friends, plenty of juice to make him strong, and a winning team poised to go all the way. If he can keep his eye on the ball now, his future will be set. But when the team turns on one of its own, should Matt play by Raiders rules, or should he go long alone?
