Wonderful novel! 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This book is a delight to read, a tense adventure. I haven't had this much fun since discovering the Harry Potter series after JK Rowling published her fourth one. I'm glad I got in on the ground floor this time, starting the adventures of "Trouble" from the beginning with "Everest is Hollow." I had to buy a second copy for myself to finish, so I could see how the story turned out. Halfway through, I lost the first copy to my wife, who wouldn't let go of it. I also shared "Everest is Hollow" with friends at a picnic, reading some of the book aloud. They, along with their kids, were hooked. The story is hypnotic.

Editorial Review:

Everest is Hollow is an adventure novel, featuring a teenage Indiana Jones-style archaeologist. His nickname is "Trouble." Together with his friends Nuru and Tattoo, Trouble climbs Mount Everest's difficult West Ridge. Fierce weather and snow leopards add to the risk of an already challenging expedition. Their risks multiply when Trouble enters a cave and realizes Everest is hollow. Inside the world's tallest mountain, he discovers an abandoned city, the key to a lost civilization built on treasures of the past. How it was done is a mystery. The only clue is a strange creature, the last of his species.

Editorial Review:

In Man vs. Wild, Bear Grylls demonstrates all manner of survival techniques when faced with nature's extremes--from crossing piranha-infested rivers to fighting off grizzly bears. He shows us how, armed with the correct know-how and a determination to stay alive, all of us have the potential to beat the elements in even the bleakest of situations.

Bear Grylls is the ultimate modern-day adventurer. He spent three years with the British Special Forces (21 SAS), only leaving when a near-fatal parachuting accident broke his back in three places. Just two years later, Grylls followed his childhood dream and became one of the youngest climbers ever to reach the summit of Mount Everest. He is the host of the Discovery Channel series Man vs. Wild, where viewers tune in to watch Grylls show what it takes to find your way out of the most inhospitable places on earth with little more than the clothes on your back.

Now, in his book, he shows his millions of fans worldwide how to do what he does in an utterly entertaining crash course in surviving every kind of hard ecosystem--mountain, sub-zero terrain, jungle, desert, and the sea. Grylls takes readers on a journey to the corners of the earth and recreates disaster scenarios such as being stranded on a desert island or lost in the snowy Arctic. Perfect for armchair adventurers and extreme sports buffs alike, Man vs. Wild is destined to become a classic in adventure literature.

Prepare to learn how to ...

  • Snack on maggots
  • Dig yourself a shelter from the snow
  • Suck the fluid from fish eyeballs
  • Skin a snake and eat it
  • Use your own urine to cool yourself down
  • Live without your cell phone

"When disaster strikes and we find ourselves alone in an unknown and hostile environment, why do some people survive and others perish? Almost all of the most extraordinary tales of survival seem to involve an indefinable Ingredient X, which can only be understood as having its source in that mysterious entity, the `human spirit.'"

I love this book!! It is a must have!! This book is great for all ages and it has a great message! There are little puppets that can be purchased to go along with this book; they are really cute and get students really engaged.

I Love YOU Stinky Face! 5 out of 5 stars.

I just love reading this book to my grand child. It is a great introduction to unconditional love. This book should be on every bookshelf! All of us have times when we wonder if we are loved. It would do us well to remind children, starting at a very young age, just how special they are to us. I Love You Stinky Face

Editorial Review:

"But Mama, but Mama, what if I were a super smelly skunk, and I smelled so bad that my name was Stinky Face?"Mothers love their children and this unconditional love is truly tested in I LOVE YOU, STINKY FACE. Lisa McCourt and Cyd Moore beautifully weave a reassuring tale of the love and affection of a parent. The imaginative son turns himself into a meat-eating dinosaur, a swamp creature and much, much more before being satisfied with the fact that no matter how stinky he is or how slimy of a creature he could possibly be, he is loved and nothing will change that.

A teacher in PA 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent book if you are interested in the Iditarod race in Alaska. The book helps young children understand the importance of perserverence and is a great introduction to history for the very young (6-8).A true story that inspires people to understand the bond between animals and people.

Balto: not just for kids 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

We purchased this book after seeing the real Balto (courtesy of the art of taxidermy) at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Our quest in Northeast Ohio, where Balto enjoyed his senior years, was prompted by my seven year-old daughter's love-affair with the animated film about this dog, who navigated a lost sled team carrying life-saving medicine through Alaska in 1925. I hereby confess publicly that, after myself reading the book, which is aimed at the 9 year-old set, I cried, much as I had done 35 years before after reading "Lassie Come Home." This account, however, is much more compelling than "Lassie" or "Old Yeller," because it entirely factual (possibly excepting the subjective thoughts imputed to the protagonist).

The author did her homework researching this story about a sled dog who was just one of the pack facing poor odds against daunting weather and unrequiting expanses of blinding snow and ice. When the alpha dog loses the trail, and another refuses to lead, the team turns to Balto to bring them and their cargo safely to rest in Nome.

Perhaps Balto deserves an authentic, grown-up biography, but this one will serve in the meantime. It appears to be the definitive account.

Editorial Review:

When dozens of children in a remote 1925 Alaska town become seriously ill with diphtheria, they can only be saved if Balto the Siberian husky successfully leads a team of sled dogs through a dangerous blizzard to deliver their medicine. Simultaneous.

Woodsong
By
Gary Paulsen

Woodsong is a story about the author's adventure in Alaska. He writes
about running dogs and racing in the Iditarod.
This story begins in Anchorage, Alaska in the 1980s. Paulsen runs the
dogs which means hitching a dog team to a sled and taking them for a
run.
One time while running the dogs, they saw a glowing light in the
woods. It seemed to be person walking in the dark with a lantern.
Paulsen also thought it was a ghost. It turned out to be a dead tree
with a glowing mushroom on it. He walked up to it and hit his head on
the dead tree. He felt the glowing light and realized it was a glowing
mushroom.
On another adventure, he was running his dogs in a snow storm. Paulsen
was headed for the edge of a cliff. He told the dog team to go straight
and straight would take them off the edge of the cliff. Paulsen did not
know because he was in a snow storm and he could not see. The dogs
knew they were about to go off the cliff. They tried to turn away but
Paulsen told them to go off the edge. They flew right off the edge of
the cliff. The sled and some of the dogs fell on him. He had a broken
rib. He got the dogs and the sled off of him and got the sled in to
shape. He got on the sled and the dogs knew the way and pulled him home.
The last part of the book is about the Iditarod race. The Iditarod
is an annual dog sled race in Alaska, where mushers and teams of dogs
cover about 1,150 miles in eight to fifteen days. Paulsen had a long
and hard race but he finished in about thirteen days.
I would recommend this book to someone who is a adventure seeker.
I liked it because it was a true story.

Editorial Review:

A LIFE AS EXCITING AS FICTION

Gary Paulsen, three-time Newbery Honor author, is no stranger to adventure. He has flown off the back of a dogsled and down a frozen waterfall to near disaster, and waited for a giant bear to seal his fate with one slap of a claw. He has led a team of sled dogs toward the Alaskan Mountain Range in an Iditarod -- the grueling, 1,180-mile dogsled race -- hallucinating from lack of sleep, but he determined to finish.

Here, in vivid detail, Paulsen recounts several of the remarkable experiences that shaped his life and inspired his award-winning writing.

A Sailor at a Young Age 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This was a very interesting book written by a man who at the age of 16 decided to sail around the world alone. The book describes his journeys and his feelings as he experienced life alone.
I believe this book is suitable for 8th through 12th graders based on conservative views of a parent. There is the use of swearing in the book so be aware of this before hand. I did appreciate the fact that the Lord Jesus led Robin to Him through his experiences. Would be interested to know how the family is doing now.

Sailing solo around the world at such a tender age.. 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This non fiction story is filled with interesting adventure. A young boy setting off to sail the world. Finding new friendships, discovering beautiful places and falling in love with a girl that was raised not too far from his home in the U.S., yet met half way around the world. A very good read.

Editorial Review:

In 1965, 16-year-old Robin Lee Graham began a solo around-the-world voyage from San Pedro, California, in a 24-foot sloop. Five years and 33,000 miles later, he returned to home port with a wife and daughter and enough extraordinary experiences to fill this bestselling book, Dove.

A Review of A Boy at War by Steven 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a great and stunning book! It is about a high school age boy named Adam. Adam's dad is in the Navy in Hawaii. In the beginning of the book Adam doesn't have any friends because his family has to move a lot. Then he becomes friends with two boys, Davi and Martin.

One day when Adam is fishing with Davi and Martin the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor and bomb American battleships. After that the Americans think of the Japanese as their enemy. Adam helps the wounded soldiers. He searchs for his father, a lieutenant in the Navy, because he saw the Arizona, his father's battleship, explode.

In this book Adam has to grow up very quickly. During this one horrible day he has to do a lot of adult things including driving a jeep to help find his father. Does Adam's dad survive? Is Adam going to be okay after being injured? Will Adam and his sister Bea ever see their dad again?

Editorial Review:

December 7, 1941: A morning like any other, but the events of this day would leave no one untouched.

For Adam, living near Honolulu, this Sunday morning is one he has been looking forward to -- fishing with friends, away from the ever-watchful eyes of his father, a navy lieutenant. Then, right before his eyes, Adam watches Japanese planes fly overhead and attack the U.S. Navy. All he can think is that it's just like in the movies. But as he sees his father's ship, the Arizona, sink beneath the water, he realizes this isn't make-believe. It's real.

Over the next few days, Adam searches for answers -- about his friends, the war, and especially, his father. But Adam soon learns sometimes there are no answers.

Adventures, and Projects and Hijinks, OH BOY! 5 out of 5 stars.
24 of 24 people found this review helpful.

To quote the author, "Adventuring instincts have been dulled over the years by video games, television, and all those electronic toys that short-circuit the imagination". The Curious Boy's Book of Adventure is certainly a wonderful antidote to the electronics age. As a tomboy at heart and the 44 year old mother of an adventurous young son, this book immediately won me over with it's instructions on how to build a water balloon catapult. There are experiments, projects and hijinks of every variety. The book is easy to understand and just the right size.

It's time to put down the game-boy and start making some forts, bottle rockets, slime and home-grown crystals. Fun, Fun and more fun!

Editorial Review:

Boys of all ages love to hunt, explore, and discover. They like expeditions, secret messages, and remote hideaways. They love to build, fix, and create. They love adventure, and this book shows them 100 ways to make adventure even more fun.

THE CURIOUS BOY'S BOOK OF ADVENTURE is full of hijinks and escapades that boys can get into right in their own backyards. Classified into 5 distinct sections:

* Exploring (with advice on things like how to row a boat)
* Hunting (bird watching and beach combing)
* Experimenting (Erupting volcano, simulating a tornado)
* Building (boats, igloos, sleds, etc) and
* Playing (boomerangs, dog-training)

The activities in THE CURIOUS BOY'S BOOK OF ADVENTURE reawaken the adventure instinct!

A perfect title for sons, dads and the rest of the family!
