Ooo, Heart-Shaped Money 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

"The earliest reports of payments with cowrie shells were from China about 3,500 years ago."

The first thing I noticed on the first page was the heart-shaped English brass halfpenny token from 1665. I've seen a lot of coins, but had no idea that they could be in so many shapes. From the Ancient Chinese bronze hoe-shaped coin of the 6th century to the square Indian gold mohur of the 17th century, there is a coin for every taste and collection.

There is information on funny money, the first coins, paper money, how coins are made, how banknotes are made, forgery and fakes, money and trade, money in war, power, shared currencies, checks and plastic and coin collections. The countries features include ancient cultures, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan and African countries.

"The name for a piggy bank comes from pygg, a type of clay used in Middle Ages to make pots for money and other thing. The idea to make banks in the shape of pigs probably came from the similarity of the words."

If we could still pay with shells, many of us would probably spend a lot more time at the beach. Some of the most fascinating "money" in this book includes red feathers glued together and tied onto vegetable-fiber coils. Writing a check on a cow? That has to
be the strangest thing I've heard about money.

This book has the most bizarre tales about money and also has a special section on coin collecting, how to store them and why you should note store them in a plastic envelope.

Other features:

Timeline of Banking
Glossary with Pictures

It is truly amazing how humans went from stone money to transferring money directly into our checking accounts. This book reminded me of visiting a place in Africa where a man told me if I could lift a gold bar with one hand I could have the gold. I did try. There is a picture of the Federal Reserve Bank in New York where one-third of all the monetary gold in the world is found in special cages.

"When one country sells gold to another, it is moved between the cages by workers wearing shoe covers to protect their feet from dropped bricks."

The most fun you will ever have reading about money.

~The Rebecca Review

Editorial Review:

A cheerful approach to all things financial plus playful photo collages and colorful drawings make up this fact-filled compendium of everything kids could possibly need to know about money--and more. Neale S. Godfrey, a nationally recognized expert on kids and money, and illustrator Randy Verougstraete tell the story of money--from bartering to investing--with animated appeal. Each subject receives careful and lively attention: the history of money; earning, saving, and spending money; banking facts and bank account information; credit card explanations and warnings ("It's In-credit-ible!"); information about America's economic structure and the government's economic role; taxes; the laws of supply and demand; inflation and depression; and stocks and bonds. Fun financial trivia is interspersed throughout, and word problems and matching games complete each of the nine chapters.

Godfrey does a fine job of covering complicated concepts, successfully tying her explanations with kids' everyday experiences (for example, creating a business plan for a dog-walking service). Kids will enjoy learning about finances with this easy-to-digest format, and grown-ups may be surprised to learn a thing or two as well. This book is about as far from dull gray, boring, banking as it gets. (Ages 8 to 12) --Ericka Lutz

Young Bankers in the Making 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Two of our children adopted from China and Russia were having a hard time learning how to count money, and were not understanding the concepts. This coin book is big, easy to handle, colorful and was very helpful to them. I would recommend it.

Good relation, poor reasoning 3 out of 5 stars.

My daughter is in Kindergarten and is working on addition and subtraction in her class. I bought this book as a supplement because she loves money, especially since our family instituted a $.25 bad word "game." In my opinion this book does a good job of tieing the different money types together, i.e. 5 pennies can be 1 nickel. What it doesn't do, and this may just be my preference, is to force the reader to identify amounts outside of .25, .50, and 1.00 denominations (with varying degrees of course.)

Editorial Review:

Children will enjoy counting and adding while learning the names and denominations of all of the U.S. coins. What do you get when you add five pennies together? What coin combinations add up to a quarter?

A bold design encourages play with actual coins while reading the book.

Wow..it is a good book! 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This story is about the history of money. It was kind of interesting because it tells in long time ago how they got foods without money. Also, it tells how money started. The book explained how money is made and now how it is use. I like this book because before I read this book I wondered what money is made of. Well, I thought it was going to be a little bit boring, but it was ok. I want to recommend this book to students who like history books and also who are interested in money.

Fiscal Management for Little Ones 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Mr. Talbot's book appeals on so many levels, it is a "must buy" for any household with children who are curious about coins.

Pick it up for any child who is always wandering around with that spare penny, nickel, dime or quarter clutched in his or her little fist. The book provides a safe place to collect those coins, while storing them in such a way that they can be looked at from time to time.

This book is perfect for any child who is ready to learn about the distinguishing characteristics of these basic coins, and how we use those coins to add up to different amounts.

And the book walks little ones through the process of saving, a stepping stone in the lesson of the value of responsible money handling. The book's premise: "If I fill all the slots, then I will have..." You and your child can then decide how the amazing sum (over $20.00, ultimately) will be spent.

Our entire family is having fun with this book. I would pick it up again in a heartbeat, and will undoubtedly be giving it to everyone I know.

Editorial Review:

Children save over $20.00 by filling the built-in coin slots on each page with pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters while building early math skills.

This money book features a delightful rhyming verse, which takes young readers along the savings path through the Penny Candy Shop, the Five-and-Ten-Cents-Store, and Quarter Quarry, until they complete the journey at Dollar Roundup, and discover the many ways coins add up to dollars. A fun and educational way for children to learn the value of coins as they watch their savings grow!

Great book, try to get it on sale 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I came across this book originally at Sam's club for $4.99, and picked it up for my son. We are homeschooling 6 children and my wife liked the book so much that she color-copies the pages so my daughter can also do the assignment. She makes several copies so even the little ones can 'try' it.

Unfortunately, the cost of color printing at home is not negligible. Since she liked it so much I returned to Sam's to buy 5 more copies, but they were sold out and would not re-stock. I hesitated in paying $10-11 per copy, but the kids really eat this up and have rocketed in their understanding of time, money and math in general using this book. It is a great accessory for learning.

I finally bit the bullet and bought 5 more copies at the $10-11 price. It will be worth it, considering that is the cost of one print cartridge for a color printer these days.

I only regret I did not know how good this book was, and I did not purchase several copies the first time around.

Rich Dad broke the code. 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I ordered this book with a skeptical outlook. The other financial instruction books I purchased for my teen lasted all of ten minutes. This book arrived, she opened it, started reading, and didn't put it down until finished. She was so excited, she called me at work to tell me she had learned about assets, liabilities, expenses, and income. She said the concepts were so simple, she didn't understand why they aren't teaching this in school. Now, she's pointing out investments to me! Rich Dad actually got the attention and respect of a teenager. I'm very impressed.

Editorial Review:

Solid in the psychological issues surrounding money 4 out of 5 stars.
35 of 38 people found this review helpful.

We bought this book to help teach our 7 year old how to manage her money. Where the book met expectations were the areas of values and healthy ways to think of money : Money isn't ours. We're stewards of God's money and therefore, we should spend it wisely, etc.

Where it didn't meet expectations, is that it didn't really provide a sample plan for how to allocate resources. While certainly, the greatest issue in dealing with money is mental -- getting your head around the idea that you have to live within your means and that you don't have to have everything NOW or just because someone else has it -- there is also a need for concrete examples....Given the above problem, I would still recommend this book as something to work through with a child because those psychological issues about spending are significant enough that they can make the difference between a someday adult with healthy attitudes about money and someone who is in debt, unhappy yet still wanting MORE! In that respect, this book is aces.

Editorial Review:

Teens always want more money. However, often they do not know how to handle the money they do have. Larry Burkett knows parents need to educate teens on solid, biblical money management if they're to exercise these habits as adults. In Money Matters for Teens, Burkett address issues of specific concern for teens and teaches them the basics to help them prepare for financial independence.

Wealth Creation 5 out of 5 stars.
43 of 46 people found this review helpful.

"Any settlement that becomes import-replacing becomes a city." Cities and the Wealth of Nations, Jane Jacobs

Written by an economist, this is a very unusual book. Ms. Jacobs is not hampered by orthodox preconceived notions, misleading postulated theoretical myths like utility optimization, rationality, or efficient markets. These standard phrases of neo-classical economic theory cannot be found in her book. Instead, and although her discussion is entirely nonmathematical, she uses a crude qualtitative idea of excess demand dynamics, of growth vs. decline. Her expectation is never of equilibrium. The notion of equilibrium never appears in this book. Jacobs instead describes qualitatively the reality of nonequilibrium in the economic life of cities, regions, and nations. She concentrates on the surprises of economic reality.

Jacobs argues fairly convincingly that significant, distributed wealth is created by cities that are inventive enough to replace imports by their own local production, that this is the only reliable source of wealth for cities in the long run, and that these cities need other like-minded cities to trade with in order to survive and prosper. Her expectation is of growth or decline, not of equilibrium. If she is right then the Euro and the European Union are a bad mistake, going entirely in the wrong direction. As examples in support of her argument she points to independent cites like Singapore and Hong Kong with their own local currencies. Other interesting case histories are TVA, small villages in France and Japan, other cases in Italy, Columbia, Ethiopia, US, Iran, ... .

The book begins in the chapter "Fool's Paradise' with discussions of Keynsian economics and Phillips curves (the Philips curve idea is demolished convincingly by Ormerod in "The Death of Economics"), I. Fisher and monetarism, and Marxism. These were all ideas requiring equilibria of one sort or another. Also interesting: her description why, in the long run, imperialism is bound to fail, written in 1984, well before the fall of the USSR. Her prediction for the fate of the West is not better. Jacobs is aware of the idea of feedback and relies on it well and heavily. She is a sharp observor of economic behavior and is well versed in economic history. This book will likely be found interesting by a scientifically-minded reader who is curious about how economies work, and why all older theoretical ideas (Keynes, monetarism, ... ) have failed to describe economies as they evolve.

I'm grateful to Yi-Ching Zhang of the Econophysics Forum for recommending this book.

Editorial Review:

"Learned, iconoclastic and exciting...Jacobs' diagnosis of the decay of cities in an increasingly integrated world economy is on the mark."—New York Times Book Review

"Jacobs' book is inspired, idiosyncratic and personal...It is written with verve and humor; for a work of embattled theory, it is wonderfully concrete, and its leaps are breathtaking."—Los Angeles Times

"Not only comprehensible but entertaining...Like Mrs. Jacobs' other books, it offers a concrete approach to an abstract and elusive subject. That, all by itself, makes for an intoxicating experience."—New York Times
