the absurd at its best! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Ionesco promised to deliberately explore the post WW2 world by integrating the ABSURD (post-existentialist stream of thought) into the everyday life. He did it with such an ingenious way of portraying the lives of two bourgeouis couples who suffer the scandalous effects of WW2. By breaking all rules concerning grammar and the written way of expression as a means to justify the absurdity which lives inside of us and expressed orally with our "stream of consciousness". Pure genius on his writng skills, ionesco demonstrates just how far one can go just by simply observing the distortions of human relations when affected by dark historical moments...

The Other Reviewer Missed the Point 5 out of 5 stars.

Whether you love or hate absurdist (ahem) writers, this play is one of the most exemplary editions of a very important phase in postmodern drama. The other reviewer gives no reason why he didn't like it other than he didn't understand it. Bad critic.

Ionesco was an absurdist, but this play was absurdly awful 1 out of 5 stars.

Wow, I usually like books that are very metaphorical and complex, but I found this book to be too over the top. I became lost in the babble. It put me to sleep. I was too tired to find the symbolism and critiques of society!

Celebrate Latin Heritage and Honor the Work of Farm Workers 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Right away, one can see that this is much more than your run-of-the-mill alphabet books. Two extremely talented people, author Alma Flor Ada and Simon Silva, collaborate on 28 short poems that celebrate the pride of the Latino familes that work the fields as migrant farmworkers. In fact, this book is dedicated to the memory of Cesar Chavez. Alma Flor Ada has written extensively on what it is like to be a Latina immigrant in such books as "Me Llamo Isabel," and Simon Silva has illustrated such like-themed books as "La Mariposa" and "El Campo."

The poems tell of the harvest, from Arboles (trees) to Zanahoria (carrot), with C and Ch telling the story of Cesar Chavez. The poems are both in English and Spanish; in both languages, the verse is rendered with great sensitivity. The beautiful illustrations convey not only the hard work of the fields, but also beauty and hope, not to mention a strong and serene sense of family. The people give thanks to the wind, sky, rain, sun, field, flower, and Earth for all the delicious fruits, while extoling honor, both in hard work and caring in the family. I can think of few other books that tell of these things, which most people take for granted, more beautifully.

Editorial Review:

Translated by Rosa Zubizarreta.

Simple poems and glorious paintings offer a deeply moving portrait of migrant Chicano farmworker families at work and play.

Great introduction to Spanish and English 5 out of 5 stars.

I love how this book allows a parent to teach their child both the Spanish and English vocabulary words. I think it is a great introductory tool, and the pictures are brilliant and interesting. We also have "My First Spanish Truck Board Book" and "My First Spanish Animal Board Book." we plan to purchase "My First Spanish Farm Board Book" next. Hopefully, DK will continue this great series.

Moja Means One - a review 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a lovely little book by a couple who have lived and taught in East Africa. They obviously loved the experience because they were inspired to produce this Caldecott winner.

Though the book was written with African-American children in mind, I believe all children can benefit from reading it. Each number is accompanied by a two-page grayscale drawing. The lack of color may be a problem for younger readers. My 3 year-old son, for example, was not interested in a second read-through. My 5 year-old daughter however was intrigued by how African culture (grantedly of the late 1960's) was different from our own. The counting was not of particular interest to us but all of the other aspects of non-urban African life were.

Pictures depicted are snowy Kilimanjaro, a children's game called Mankala, coffee trees, mothers carrying their babies on their backs (which we now do in the US), savanna animals, styles of dress, Nile river fish, busy market stalls, musicians and their instruments, and, at last, a storyteller entrancing young listeners.

My only complaint is that there is not more to this book: more beautiful drawings; and more explanations of the activities that are depicted. Still a nice book for children who seek an introduction to the broader world.

Editorial Review:

"Primarily a Swahili counting book, Moja Means One is also meant to be a gift of heritage, a glimpse of what is unique about East Africa."--School Library Journal. Full color.

Not recommended as one's primary resource to learn Spanish 3 out of 5 stars.
19 of 23 people found this review helpful.

There are pictures with the corresponding Spanish definition but the literal English translation is not included. I find this to be a bit challenging for some of the items as there can be multiple English words referring to a single object and without the exact English translation you aren't sure. For example, there is a picture of a 3 drawer dresser defined as comoda. In English this could be nightstand, dresser, bureau... Also some of the pictures are difficult to distinguish. One page has a picture of a sheet and of a pillow and they look almost identical.

Fun, Friendly, and Factual 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Tired of boring and bland spanish tools? This book is bursting with vivid, whimsical, illustrations depicting everyday life with humor and clarity that will attract even beginning adult students. The apealing story type pictures not only define spanish words, but they also promote spanish interaction between reader and child or student with student. On "la cocina" page, a father washes dises amidst a swirling pandemonium of dropping dishes, spilt juice, and a todler with a pot on his head. A teacher or parent could easily springboard off of this illustration to begin to form whole sentences based on the action in the picture.

This intriguing book is sure to be a winner with you and children alike.

great tool 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

this is a great resource to have for anyone learning Russian. The website with pronunciations is great!

Great Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is great for teaching my children russian. Each page consists of a setting, for example "At Home" and pictures of each room. Then individual items are around the borders of the page, each labeled with the word in russian and the english pronunciation underneath. I like that there is no english word for the item, since they say that it is better to learn that way. I bookmarked the web page for this book for quick reference. The voice is that of a native russian woman--it is very clear and easy to understand her.

The only con to this book is that my husband (who is russian) has found a discrepancy (and there may be more since we only just started using it), where an item is shown in singular, but the word is in plural form.

Over all, I love this book so far and plan to implement a few words a day.

Not appropriate for young teens 1 out of 5 stars.
12 of 22 people found this review helpful.

I am returning this book. I found it to be totally disgusting and not appropriate for my children. I am not sure sex, mastubation, gay lifestyles are appropriate for any monologue. I do not want my kids reading this, let alone reciting it!

Good, but... 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I did find some extremely clever monologues in this book. Some were good, others made me cringe (either at outdated 'cool' language or the extreme stereotypical nature). However, all of the monologues in this book are ones that have earned people awards. These monologues or monologues that people auditioning you will more than likely know. I enjoyed reading some of the monologues--there were some pretty funny ones, and some good drama (considering it's for teens). These are great to work on in a classroom or workshop, but I would not recommend using this book--or really any monologue book--when going to a professional audition.

Editorial Review:

The monologue Book you have been waiting for! Award-winning material written specifically for today's teens. Challenging monologues in real language and real situations that are really fun to work on. By Janet Milstein

Great for Japanese learning English 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book thinking it would b user friendly for English speakers learning Japanese, but it looks to be intended for Japanese learning English. Unless you have a good working knowledge of written Japanese, especially kanji, this may not be the book for you. I rated it at 4 stars because it is a very good book for it's intended auience.

For Japanese Only 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is totally mis-reperesented on the basis of its title. It is NOT for use by English speakers. It is directed exclusively and only toward Japanese speakers and readers who wish to improve their English. It's a great book for the Japanese. If you're looking to learn Japanese from it, forget it.

wonderful!!! very useful for native English speakers too 5 out of 5 stars.

This just arrived and I am sooo happy! Dont pay too much attention to reviewers here who claim this isnt useful for English speakers learning Japanese. I'm a rank beginner --- studied for 2 months so far and know only 175 kanji and very basic sentence structures --- yet I find this extremely useful. The kanji is easy to read and the illustrations are attractive. You could easily spend hours poring over this without getting bored. I can see myself referring to this handy dictionary for many years to come. Recommend this to all Nihongo students. It's worth far more than $16 IMHO. Do yourself a favor and buy this NOW!!!

Another A++++++++ Book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Any book Ana Lomba has her name on, we will buy.

I am a non-Spanish speaking mother of a five year old daughter and two year old son. I want my children to be bilingual. I bought "Play and Learn Spanish" first and have purchased everything else this author has produced. All Ana Lomba's materails are A++++++++

Another fun and interactive learning tool and Another must have if you want to teach and learn Spanish.

Great for introducing Spanish words 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I've recently purchased this book for my 2 kids, 2yrs and 3 1/2. They are both starting to learn spanish. My only complaints about the book would be that the illustracions are not what I'm used to in kids fairy-tale books, though my son thinks this is great... and also, that on the CD the speaker is speaking with a spanish accent, rather than a latin-american one (we were expecting a LA accent as purchased in the US). But, I still give it 5/5 as it is (so far) the best bi-lingual book we have found to both make new vocab reasonable clear and easy for the kids to figue out, and also, for maintaining their interest. My youngest is walking around the house calling his bears the tres osos, and rocking on his rocker saying delante-detras... so the vocab from the book sticks well due to the repetition.
