cute 5 out of 5 stars.

I thought this was an entertaining little book, but as some of the negative reviews suggest, it may be a little too dark for younger children. But then again, most under-10 children (if my nieces are any guide) are going to want books with more pictures and less text anyhow.

A Teachable Moment! 5 out of 5 stars.

As a teacher in a multi-lingual school, a copy of a book in ANY language other than English is like gold! Matilda is a great book for any child.
Most children today are avid movie goers. A book that "goes with" a movie has gotten my students reading, reading, reading! After viewing the video AND reading the book makes for a great compare and contrast lesson...putting the book in Spanish allows for me to expand that experience and the growth of my Spanish speaking learners!
I highly recommend this book to teachers working with non-English speaking students.

Editorial Review:

Matilda is a genius, but her parents treat her like a dolt, so she applies her untapped mental powers to get revenge on her parents and rid her school of the evil headmistress. "Dahl has written another fun and funny book with a child's perspective on an adult world. As usual, Blake's comical sketches are the perfect complement to the satirical humor."--School Library Journal.

Great as an addition to any curriculum 5 out of 5 stars.

I am bilingual (Spanish and English) and wanted to add in French with my own children. Since I just partnered in working on Flip Flop French: Ages 3-5: Level 1, I've been using that of course, and I so enjoyed using Ana Lomba's Play and Learn Spanish for my own students and classes, I got it in French.

I haven't been disappointed! After the children (three of them, ages 5 down to 2 years) completed lesson three, they were able to pick up quite a bit of this book and the interesting conversations that go along with the pictures in the book (it's full color!) My children really enjoy coloring and drawing, so after we do the Flip Flop French activity for the day, this is a great supplement and change for them. It's a little advanced for them without the other more simple lessons, but I think they'll continue to grow into it!

All in all, I love it!

Kris the bus driver 1 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

This is undoubtably the worst jokes you could find. Most children would not even understand the nuances as you have to read the text rather than tell the joke. For instance, "What is the name of the superhero who loves clam chowder? Answer: Souperman." Tell that to a child and see if they laugh! Another example, "Where is the best place to find out the exact weight of a pie? Answer: Somewhere over the rainbow . . . weigh a pie." This joke book is really bad and NOT recommended for anyone. One final example; "What goes, 'Gloom, doom, boom'? Answer: A rhyme bomb." Yuck, yuck.

Jokes okay. 2 out of 5 stars.

This book had a few good kid jokes, but most were the usual retreads. My 8 year old son carried it around the house for a few days reading the jokes to us, so he liked it. But he didn't think it was great. Just okay.

Editorial Review:

Especially for young funny-bones, here is a brand-new collection from the master of the hilarious joke himself, Jeff Rovin. Children of all ages will appreciate this incredible assemblage of the most hysterical jokes on all kinds of subjects. Original.

My nephew just loves this book! I find myself learning so much with her and it supplies plenty of laughter. This book instills plenty of confidence as the words are learned and new words are tried out. Plenty of fun.

This is a great book to promote vocabulary buliding with young children. It has real photos which makes it more realistic and easier to use and build background knoledge. Kids love this book they engage in dialoge and adults use it to learn a different language as well!

Great for adults and kids 5 out of 5 stars.

This books is better than the rest because it includes actions, clearly depicted with photographs of children doing things. But more than that, the way the information is presented helps you learn - opposites (heavy/light, rough/smooth, left/right) are presented together, which facilitates learning. My 15-month-old daughter loves this book like no other because she never gets bored of it, there are always new things to point at and words to hear. I love it because I learn with her!

Presents pictures labeled in both Spanish and English under such headings as "Going to school," "Weather," and "At the supermarket."

WOW. This is an awesome program and an awesome deal.

If you are like me, tired of wasting money on dictionaries, grammar books, travel guides, contrived music programs....

You will not regret buying this. Not only is it inexpensive, and usable for all ages, you will have usable spanish vocabulary immediately.

This Book is Fantastic A++++++ Learning Tool 5 out of 5 stars.

Spanish is not our native language, but we believe our children need to be bilingual. Last October I bought "Play and Learn Spanish" because I liked that it had every day situations to practice and the came with a CD for pronunciation. After bringing it home and using it, WOW it is INCREDIBLE.

After a week, my children and I were singing the songs - not perfectly, but pretty close. We have now been listening to the CD and reading the book for 3+ months. My five year old daughter and I are having small conversations in Spanish together. I can't tell you how incredibly special this is. We have since purchased "Hop Skip and Sing Spanish, "Goldilocks" and "Little Red Riding Hood". All Ana Lomba's materials are of equal exemplary standards.

I hope she will continue to produce more books and CDs, we will buy them all!

Thank you for creating such incredible tools for the non-speaking Spanish population.

P.S. This is now my signature gift to all my friends who would like to learn Spanish.

This book was just what we needed. My five-year-old son has developed a sudden interest for Star Wars, and since he's too young to watch the films, this book was perfect for him. Excellent pictures, everything is well explained, all the major points of interest are covered.

Top Secret Files Revealed! 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

An adult has done the unthinkable! Broken the secret adult pact and published confidential files telling kids the truth about various rules we adults have passed onto them under the misconception that these rules were for their own good. David Wisniewski reveals the truth that the real reason we eat vegetables is to keep them in their place so they do not take over the world and eat us, instead of the lies we tell that vegetables are good for you. Other secrets he reveals include the reason why grown ups say drink plenty of milk, that combing your hair is not to keep it neat, why you shouldn't blow bubbles in your milk, why you shouldn't play with your food, why you shouldn't jump on your bed, why you shouldn't bite your fingernails and why you shouldn't pick your nose.

This book has been published with great illustrations made from cutting little bits of paper and gluing them into very detailed pictures. The only thing that lets this book down for kids and thankfully saves us adults is that there are only a few myths unveiled. This of course makes it extremely likely that David Wisniewski will release a sequel but you'd think if he had the secrets he could have made this book a bit thicker and included them in the one book. As an adult I can only say that I hope the book is so thin because these are the only confidential files he has managed to steal. Wait a minute he is an adult isn't he? So why does he even need the files since he already knows the answers. I predict Mr Wisniewski's motives are not just to publish the truth for kids but to make money along the way and that this is the first in a planned series of sequels. I enjoyed this enough that I'll check them out as well.

Editorial Review:

Sssssshhhhh! You are about to open secret files, heretofore hidden from kids for thousandsof years. Steel your mind for the truth. Prepare yourself for knowledge never before held by America's youth. Learn the real reasons grown-ups tell you to do things! Caldecott medalistDavid Wisniewski's surprising revelations will have you rolling in the aisles.

What started as a chore, became quite enjoyable 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have put off reading this book for years... mainly because of its size, and the fact that it was written in French, and I just didn't want to put that much work into anything. I finally convinced myself that I really needed to read this because I enjoy the movies so much.

In the beginning... I was worried. The language was easy enough to follow (concern number 1 gone) but the writing style seemed a bit loose and haphazard. Rather than my mind being boggled, I found myself getting irritated by the wandering I felt that the book was doing. For the first quarter of the book I had started to question my choice of reading this. At first D'Artagnan irritated me because he seemed so stupid, and ready to fight anyone and everyone over anything, then our introduction to the three musketeers Athos, Aramis and Porthos were also ready to "cross swords" with anyone at even the most minor offence. The first several sword fights were rather sparse as far as description and excitement so it didn't "thrill" me the way I had hoped.

Enter the Cardinal, he was interesting... devious and maniacal... I thought to myself that the book could be picking up. But sadly the first half of the book really was nothing but D'Artagnan pining over women, and the Musketeers drinking, eating or spending money on more equipment. I was a bit weirded out by their lackeys... each of them had a servant who was all but a slave. These servants were only mentioned when they were being scolded, or offered up to do their master's bidding.

The story began to get interesting with the introduction of Milady, one of the most intelligent and evil villainesses I have encountered in a book. Vile of nature and black of heart she is a truly evil being that really spices up the book. Once she was brought into the picture, the tedious story opened up into an interesting tale of intrigue, a battle of wits between her, the cardinal and the musketeers.

There is a fair amount of history in this book, however much of it has been altered with creative license so I wouldn't take the events as gospel. I guess I can see why this is a classic, however I would have to say I preferred "The Count of Monte Cristo" to this. Had the first half been more entertaining I would have really loved this book. I'm just glad I kept reading so that I could get to the interesting part.

Editorial Review:

Dumas's most popular novel has long been a favorite with children, and its swashbuckling heroes are well known from many a film and TV adaptation. Set in 17th-century France, this tale of the adventures of D'Artagnan and the three musketeers is the finest example of its author's brilliantly inventive storytelling genius.

Slow Read 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Great Expectations didn't meet my expectations. I was a little bored throughout the begining and middle of the story. I think what kept me reading on was the desire to read a "classic" (I usually read biography or history).

I continued reading because I wanted to find out if Magwitch would meet his daughter. In addition, I was interested in Pip's strong desire to be a gentleman. Other than help his friend in business and dawdle about thinking about an emotionally deadweight chic, Pip didn't seem interested in obtaining a job or taking real advantage of his opportunities. I'll give Pip credit for helping his friend attain stature in business, and eventually going on to operate with his friend after losing his unearned wealth. But the lazy part is 19th century gentleman, huh?

Maybe Dicken's purpose was to show the benefits of wealth and the slothfullness of one who didn't have to work himself to attain it. Maybe it hit me at the wrong time, as my fiancee just took a hike and left me after I just sold my house (and now have no place to go). Trust you me, I won't be wasting my life away like Ms. Havisham though. I haven't reached gentlemanly status and need to continue working . . . .

I've only read Charles Dicken's Nicholas Nickleby and Oliver Twist in addition to "Great Expectations". Of these, I thoroughly enjoyed Nicholas Nickleby. In the future, I'll look for Kates and Madellines and not Estellas. Great Expectations was a tougher read for me as these characters just simply didn't entice my interest too much. Of course, maybe I needed a brighter read . . .

Editorial Review:

After harsh early years, Pip, an orphan growing up in Victorian England, is given the means to become a gentleman by an unknown benefactor and learns that outward appearances can be deceiving. Presented in comic book format.

Best Buy 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have been teaching English as a Second Language for many years and I have become fluent in Spanish. This dictionary for Americans (North and South) is the best for the money. It has many words that are American Spanish and American English whereas many other more expensive dictionaries use European words and sometimes spellings. It is not a good dictionary for travel but then I don't think most are. I don't use a dictionary when on the road. The paper editions wear out rapidly with moderate use but they are cheap enough. Do not waste time and money on smaller dictionaries such as the Chicago. This one not only has American language, it has many idioms, and a reasonable grammar section. I hope this little gem never goes out of print.

great for high school ESL teacher 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am a high school ESL teacher for new immigrants to the U.S. Our school buys the Merriam-Webster English-Spanish in bulk so each student has one that is easy to carry around, and because they are cheaper. But after experimenting with various dictionaries, I find that I much prefer to keep The New World dictionary right beside me at my desk, when I'm standing at the overhead projector, when I am circulating around the room to help students. I find The New World easier to read and easier to use. For example, when looking at multiple meaning words such as plot or setting, it is easier to pick out the language arts/literary definition in The New World dictionary. It also offers more in the way of support for people learning English or Spanish -- for example the section that helps Spanish speakers understand English prefix/root/suffix is very useful to ESL students and teachers in a high school setting. This year we are going to buy several for each classroom that has ESL students in it.
