Editorial Review:

Who knew proton torpedoes were so expensive? Apparently that's why Luke only had one pair when he set out to take down the Death Star. And that's not the only bit of trivia you'll bring away from this aptly subtitled Ultimate Guide to Star Wars Vehicles and Spacecraft. Whether you're looking for the bathroom on Jabba's sail barge or you just want to see where Boba Fett catches a few winks on Slave I, this is the book for you. In Star Wars: Incredible Cross-Sections, author-archaeologist David West Reynolds zooms out from cataloguing minutiae as he did in Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary, and instead takes apart the big toys of Star Wars, from AT-ATs to X-Wings.

Full-color, exploded technical illustrations get you under the hood of every noteworthy ship in the Star Wars trilogy, from a grand tour of a Jawa Sandcrawler to a sprawling, four-page foldout of (what else but?) the Death Star. Detailed labels and realistic, miniature depictions of crew and characters roaming around each ship are so engaging that you may find yourself imagining you're on the Millennium Falcon giving Chewie a hand with the power couplings. --Paul Hughes

Fantastic Tales 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 31 people found this review helpful.

This book is a selection of the choicest tales from the Thousand and One Nights. The translator, N.J. Dawood, also translated the Koran for the Penguin Classics series. Dawood explains in the introduction that the first of these tales appeared in a written form around 850 C.E., in a book called, "A Thousand Legends." More tales, of lesser quality, were added over the years until an anonymous editor in Cairo finally codified them in the 18th century. A French version of some of the stories appeared in the 17th century, and was followed by several English versions in the 19th century; the best known adaptation came from Sir Richard Burton, in 10 volumes. The stories are a mix of Arabic, Persian, and Indian tales and appear to have been written in response to classical Arabic literature. The Arabs do not consider them part of the classic canon, and after reading these stories, I can see why. They are aggressive and highly sexualized, and are loaded with sorcery, fantasy, and criticism of authority figures.

Whatever their origins and means of transmission, these are excellent and entertaining stories. I cannot think of one tale in this selection that I did not like. Included in the book is the instantly recognizable Aladdin story, as well as the Sinbad voyages. Other tales are just as interesting: "The Tale of the Hunchback," "The Tale of Judar and his Brothers," "The Porter and the Three Girls of Baghdad," and many others. Many of these stories are cycles; they have stories within stories, as characters in one story tell their own stories. At the end of the cycle, the story is cleverly wrapped up, usually with a happy ending. I do not think I need to go into detail about Aladdin or Sinbad, except to say that I was surprised to see Aladdin described as Chinese. Providing details to these stories would be useless anyway because they are so detailed as to be impervious to summary.

There is no doubt that many of these stories started as oral stories, and retained that shape into the written versions. The best example is the Sinbad cycle. All of the stories in this cycle are framed in the same way. This repetition made it easier to memorize the stories, or at least the basic outline. A good storyteller could take the frame and fill in the blanks with whatever his heart desired. You often see this kind of writing in the Bible.

Social roles and class play a large part in these stories. Women are presented as wily and dangerous, but not always. Several stories show men trying to pull fast ones on the ladies, with the results much to the detriment of the men. Many stories show how the high and mighty come crashing down, or how the lowly are elevated to great status. These movements are attributed to the grace or condemnation of Allah, and the characters all act out their movements with Allah close by.

You will not go wrong with this book. These are immensely entertaining stories for both children and adults, although you might want to find a toned down version for the kiddies. Why? I am thinking about the tale where a man and some women play "name that body part." My only criticism of this version is that the tale of "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" is absent. I have no idea why it is missing, but the book loses one star for this grave omission.

Editorial Review:

A selection of the tales told by Shahrazad in an attempt to save her life, including "The Young Woman and Her Five Lovers," "The Fisherman and the Jinnee," "The Historic Fart," and "The Tale of Kafur the Black Eunuch."

Dog-gone funny! This reviewer gives it Five Bones! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Being a dog is a full-time job, indeed...as Snoopy's wacky antics will certainly convince you. Snoopy pulls various pranks on the adorable Peanuts children that will have you laughing until your eyes bleed! Laugh as Schroeder repels Lucy's wanton advances, and Peppermint Patty plays both sides of the ball! Fun for the entire family, even distant cousins!

A Great Snoopy Book Review 5 out of 5 stars.

"Being A Dog Is A Full-Time Job", strips from 1989, was very funny! Join the Peanuts characters on tons of new zany adventures! For, example we met another one of Snoopy's brothers Olaf!!! Lucy enters him in an "ugly dog" contest(Isn't that just like her?). Peppermint Patty goes to summer school!! She's so mad Marcie and Charlie Brown go to camp, she sneaks away to camp!!And plus, an "old friend" of Charlie Brown's calls and wants to meet him at the mall!! Could this girl have really been an "old friend"??!! To reveal more in this delightful book would be crazy!! It's funny, because I was born in 1989!! Have fun with this one!

Editorial Review:

Filled with a year's worth of strips, this book from cartoonist-philosopher Schulz is certain to top the list of his smashing volumes. The world's most famous beagle works hard in his job as a dog, as portrayed in the pages of this humorous yet thought-provoking strip.

Good book, but focuses on only rural areas... 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I am an American citizen, but my fiance is Kenyan. I was thrilled to find this book, since when we have children I want them to know as much about his culture as they do mine. I really like the idea of this book - introducing young children to Kiswahili words, and I love the pronunciation guides that are provided. I only have one complaint with this book. Its focus is completely on rural life, rural traditions, and rural culture. There is nothing about the larger African cities (my fiance grew up in Nairobi... not a tiny village). So if your goal is to learn a few Kiswahili words (although many of the words themselves are related to rural life), then this is a great book. But do not expect to get any idea of modern aspects of African life or city life. Even so, the book is cute, and worth it just for the Kiswahili it does contain.

Editorial Review:

"The beautiful vision of African life in the text merely hints of the community breathtakingly captured in the illustrations. . . . The space has been filled with monumental figures that glorify the power and beauty of man."--Horn Book. Full color. Caldecott Honor Medal; ALA Notable Book.

Great resource for learning/teaching Spanish 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I was so happy to find this book. I am teaching my 2 year old Spanish but I don't know Spanish. We're learning together. This book was great because it has the pronunciation of the words also written phonetically. I sure don't want to teach her what I -THINK- the word should sound like. 2,000 common words with lots of pictures. It's a great addition to the other books/CDs I'm using.

Good way to extend what's learned on Dora and Diego 4 out of 5 stars.

This is just the basics. Our son loves learning Spanish. He's 3 and I want to encourage it. My old tapes are coming back to me from Jr. High and High School Spanish. I'm able to help him with simple sentences using the words from this book. He really likes the pictures. Some of the words are different than in other versions. This can be a bit confusing. Not sure which is correct all of the time, but it serves our purposes. We have two other versions of this dictionary and cross reference. My son likes it because he knows it guarantees more reading time with mom.

This is a great book. Luke and Mara are wonderful together, and 'Union' is a cute story about their wedding. Sometimes the pacing is a bit confusing, but overall a great comic.

Not as good as it could be 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This sometimes confusing comic should have had a great story. The idea was a good one. I am sorry to say that it didn't inspire the imagination or hold interest for long. Don't get me wrong. As comics go, this is okay. I read it completely through once, but will never feel the need to pick it up again. Die hard fans beware: You will not be falling in love with this one.

A great book for introducing poetry to French children or those who are bilingual. 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book to slowly introduce poetry to my grandson, as the author is a favorite of is mother's.

Jackson is only 18 months old. His vocabulary French and English is beyond that of a two year old. Still, we are going to go very slowly. We have completed the first two pages and he now comprehends them.

I think that it will be best used and understood when he is about 9 and reading himself. For that reason I have put the book away for a few years.

Delightful.. 5 out of 5 stars.

I adore the works of Shel Silverstein and I desperately want to speak and understand the French language.. This book is perfect for a novice like me and the story is wonderful and heartwarming..

This book is a great place to start 5 out of 5 stars.

My husband and I are historical researchers and I am currently working on teaching Madarin Chinese to my daughters, ages 6 1/2 and 10 1/2 (and my husband) as well as to myself. Public schools being what they are today with the current dummying down effect inflicted by "No Child Left Behind" & etc. (and no, I am NOT a full-time homeschooler), I have always felt that the parents of smart kids NEED to supplement their family's public school experience with home instruction according to their personal interests. This book(along with Tuttle's 250 Essential Chinese characters, vol. 1 & 2 AND Schuam's outlines) are what we are starting off our learning process with. My kids are very excited with what we are discovering in our studies. This is not just work for them, its fun. I highly reccomend this kind of family project to other parents. Medical studies have shown that a brain that is continued to be challenged is one that far less often falls prey to the terrible decline into dementia. If you think of Mandarin as a giant "acrostic puzzle" and leave your preconceptions dumped at the door, adventure awaits!

Best Spanish CD for babies/children 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I speak Spanish fluently, but not being raised speaking Spanish, I did not know any songs to share with my son when he was born. I found this CD, and it has been fantastic! We speak Spanish about 20% of the time at home, but in spite of hearing more English, this is the first CD my son had any interest in at all. He loves De Colores, and the song about the Elefantes especially well.

I am uncertain what another reviewer meant about the CD and the booklet being out of sync, unless that was true in an older version. In ours, the tracks on the CD and in the booklet are both arranged according to age/developmental level. The booklet is extremely helpful because it includes the full lyrics to all the songs, so if there are some parts of the song you don't understand (or if you don't speak Spanish but are prepared to imitate the songs), the lyrics are right there for you to study.

I have about 15 CDs and/or DVDs of songs/rhymes in Spanish, and this is hands down my favorite!

Editorial Review:

Before they focus in on their native language, babies have an amazing ability to hear and absorb sounds that adults unconsciously block out, like the subtleties of a foreign language. Created by linguistic experts, Baby’s First Words in Spanish is designed for newborns to toddlers up to two years old. Each package includes:

·60 minute CD of sweet and soothing songs, rhymes, words and stories
·Parents’ guide that explains how children learn languages
·Lyric sheet so that parents can sing along to the songs on the CD with their children
