Editorial Review:

Considered the innovator of "horizontal history," Genevieve Foster became frustrated when her two school-aged children complained about the boring presentation of history in their school texts. This frustration led to Foster's first book, George Washington's World (1941). In her unique approach, Foster weaves a story of the world around her central character; rather than focusing exclusively on geo-political events, as most textbooks do; she includes stories of scientific discovery and invention, music, literature, art, and religion. She has a keen intuition for stories that will especially delight and amuse her youthful audience. In Augustus Caesar's World, Foster traces the seven major civilizations Rome, Greece, Israel, Egypt, China, India, and Persia from 4500 B.C. to the time of Augustus Caesar in 44 B.C. and culminating in 14 A.D. Within this timeframe readers will learn not only the stories of Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, and Marc Antony, but also the historian Livy and how Virgil came to write the Aeneid. Foster will then take her readers all over the world to learn what was happening at this same time in China, Persia, India and so on. Foster's detailed pen and ink drawings are fresh and appealing, and her illustrated timelines give a clear sense of chronology, enriching the engaging text. An all-time customer favorite!

The perfect fairytale 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

As the mother of a young daughter, I am always aware of how hard I must work to ensure that she sees herself as a person and not an object. I absolutely love how this book turns convention upside down and how Jane is true to herself even when everyone else--her parents included--is trying to tell her to conform. This book served as an excellent introduction to a brief discussion with my daughter as to how she can be anything she wants to be, no matter what others tell her.

Jane and the Dragon 5 out of 5 stars.

This is such a special and unique book. It has a great message, especially for girls. It challenges stereotypes and convention in such a sweet way. Enjoy!

Editorial Review:

A feisty heroine who’d rather joust than sew seeks out her own adventures in these magical fairy tales for today’s young readers.

Jane longs to be a knight, but everyone laughs at her. Everyone, that is, except the court jester, who lends her a small suit of armor to help make her dream come true. And when an enormous dragon swoops in and steals the prince, Jane quickly gets the chance to prove herself!

Editorial Review:

In this superbly illustrated volume, Athens and Rome, the two greatest cities of antiquity, spring to life under the masterful pen of Peter Connolly. All the historical and archaelogical evidence has been seamlessly pieced together to reconstruct the architectural wonders of these mighty civilizations. Re creating public buildings, religious temples, shops, and houses, Connolly reveals every aspect of life in glorious detail, from religion and food to drama, games, and the baths. In addition to the great monuments and moments of classical Greece and Rome, readers learn about a typical day in the life of an Athenian and a Roman. They read about and see the houses people inhabited; attend 5 day festivals and go to the theater; fight great battles and witness the birth of Rome's navy; visit temples and spend a day at the chariot races. The spectacular artwork and vivid descriptions provide a window into the fascinating history of these two extraordinary cities and civilizations. The Ancient City is the crowning achievement of Peter Connolly's distinguished career.

Partisan update 1 out of 5 stars.
20 of 26 people found this review helpful.

Van Loon's book has been a staple of family reading hour for decades, and more recently it has received renewed circulation among homeschooling families. Originally written in 1921, this story of civilization has been continuously updated, not always profitably. What's below is an excerpt from the current edition:

"The civil rights movement escaped another defeat when the Reagan administration's attempt to grant tax exemptions to schools that discriminate against blacks failed. The economic future of young blacks remained bleak, as they continued to suffer the highest unemployment rate in the United States, while the government reduced many of the welfare programs that had helped the poor subsist."

Readers seeking a less partisan history are advised to find an older edition or to obtain E.H. Gombrich's excellent A Little History of the World, recently released by Yale University Press in an English edition.

Editorial Review:

The Story of Mankind by Hendrik Willem van Loon was the first book to be awarded the Newbery Medal for an outstanding contribution to children's literature. Written for his grandchildren, The Story of Mankind intermingles personal anecdotes with the history of Western civilization, covering the development of writing, art, and architecture, the rise of major religions, and the formation of the modern nation-state. Van Loon explains that he selected what to and what not to include by asking the question: Did the person or event in question perform an act without which the entire history of civilization would have been different? Well written, informative, and vastly entreating.

Tut is in Town 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Tut exhibit is in town this summer and I wanted to be able to provide some information to my seven year old before we went. This book was absolutely the right amount of information for the 7-10 year old age group. We enjoyed it so much that we have purchased additional books in the series and are racing through those as well. I highly recommend the series as a great introduction to biographies!

Excellent! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 8-year old had a class project to read a biography, chose 4 objects to represent the person in the biography, and talk about these objects to the class. Since we are Egyptian and own several ancient Egyptian replicas, we thought we'd try this book. We couldn't have been happier! Just the right amount of information for my son's age, presented in a captivating style supported by lots of diagrams. After reading the whole book alone, he asked me to read it again with him "because it is such a nice book" he said! Looking forward to getting the rest of this series!

Editorial Review:

Ever since Howard Carter uncovered King Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, the young pharaoh has become a symbol of the wealth and mystery of ancient Egypt. Now, a two-and-a-half-year-long museum exhibit of Tut’s treasures is touring major cities in the U.S., drawing record crowds. This Who Was . . . ? is complete with 100 black-andwhite illustrations and explains the life and times of this ancient Egyptian ruler, covering the story of the tomb’s discovery, as well as myths and so-called mummy curses.

Packed with information... 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 8 people found this review helpful.

There was a lot involved... so much infact that my 8 year old son wasn't very attracted to it. However in the next few years perhaps he'll take another look thought it or use it for a project he does at school. I wouldn't recommend buying this book for 'fun' but rather for direct use with a project you might be working on.

Good Read for Children 5 out of 5 stars.

I ordered this book for my 9 year old son. He absolutely loves it. Since he has started reading Magic Tree House books his reading has drastically improved. I believe this book and the Magic Tree House books are a must have for this age group. These books help them learn history facts in a fun way.

Magic Tree House never fails 4 out of 5 stars.

I only wish I'd discovered this series of books sooner! These books are great supplements to teaching history to your kids. The Magic Tree House website even offers a few free activity pages to go with many of the books and in addition to the history study guide, we use the companion story books to really get "personal" with history.

Great for homeschooling 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is great. I use it for homeschooling my children along with The Great Courses DVD course "Between the Rivers: Mesopotamia". It is easy to match each lecture and the page number that it correlates to in this DK book. As usual, the photography is fantastic. We watch one 30 minute lecture and read one part of the book each day and along with some extra discussions, crafts, and supplemental reading, we have a two month course on Ancient History in Mesopotamia that is top notch.

Editorial Review:

In these 4 all-new titles-each with its own clip-art CD and wall chart-DK shines its Eyewitness spotlight on vital topics from the past, present, and future. While Mesopotamia explore the cradle of civilization and Great Scientists reveals the minds that shaped the modern world, China investigates the present-day culture of the most populous country on the planet, and Oil takes a look at the controversial substance responsible for the beginning-and, if we're not careful, the end of life as we know it today.
