A new "treasure" for my son 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My five-year-old son and I did this project together (okay, so I did most of the work, but he was engaged in "helping" the whole time, which is saying something). We have completed pretty much every "mummy" kit we can get our hands on, and this one was probably the best. This kit contains a plastic "pharoah" body with a cavity inside that holds his internal organs. After you assemble the canopic jars, remove the organs, place them in the appropriate jar, and top them with super-cool authentic-looking lids. Then put the body back together and wrap with included gauze. We felt there wasn't enough gauze, so I cut some white cotton into strips, which he unwrapped and wrapped again about 1,000 times! Now the kit is secure in his "treasure drawer" beside his bed. Very cool and fun! He learned a lot.

Editorial Review:

For any child who has imagined the thrill of exploring a pharaoh's tomb or detecting the secrets of a long-ago culture, this kit is the ultimate thrill, combining lessons in science, archaeology, and anthropology with the experience of creating your very own mummy. The guide offers an introduction to various cultural burial practices and beliefs. Full color .

Makes you feel like you're there 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

As a 2nd grade teacher, I've been sharing this book with my students for about 2 years now. It keeps any group mesmorized! The best part about it is the way it makes kids understand that the people of Pompeii were just regular people going about their daily routines when Vesuvius erupted. They especially feel a connection with the little boy Pliny who watched the eruption from across the water and wrote about it in his later years. It is a great book to use as part of a classroom volcano unit or by itself.

Excellent book for educators. 5 out of 5 stars.

Good children's books on Ancient Rome are hard to find so when I came across Pompeii... Buried Alive!, I bought two copies for my son's and daughter's libraries.

The first chapter gives a glimpse into the lives of the people under the rule of the Roman Empire. Mount Vesuvius is introduced along with the assumption that the people of Pompeii were not aware that they were living beside a dangerous volcano.

The correct pronounciations are given for Pompeii and Vesuvius which are often mispronounced by children as well as adults.

In chapter two, the volcano erupts and descriptions are given as to how the people reacted. Descriptions are also given as to how the volcano eruption affected the air, sky, land, and sea.

The town of pompeii was buried under hot ash.

In the final chapter, chapter 3, Pompeii is forgotten. Time passes. A new town is built overtop of ancient Pompeii.

Workers, who were tunnelling for water, discover pieces of an ancient wall and, years later, Pompeii is rediscovered.

Pompeii... Buried Alive! is not only a well-rounded, excellent book, it is a necessity for teaching children about Pompeii. Everything a child needs to know are in its pages.

Editorial Review:

Illus. in full color. "The drama of natural disasters provides prime material to entice young independent readers. In this volume, the account of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius describes village life 2,000 years ago, the eruption itself and its aftermath, and the excitement when the buried town is rediscovered centuries later. A lively and factual glimpse of a devastating moment in history, in an accessible, attractive package."--Publishers Weekly.

More than just mazes 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

There are lots of fun maze books around, and this one is as fun as any, but what sets it apart are the details about pyramid design and construction. A lot of fascinating historical info from National Geographic is woven into the stories and puzzles, and the book still very engaging, not at all dry. I bought it for a niece, but ended up reading all the pages myself before I gave it to her. Good for kids of almost any age.

Editorial Review:

In an ancient Egyptian town, a friend’s father is trapped inside the Great Pyramid. To reach him, readers have to make their way through secret tunnels and chambers, deciphering hieroglyphics, uncovering buried treasures, and learning a lot about pyramid construction and life in the age of pharaohs.

GREAT!!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am a King Arthur, And his knights of course, FREAK!! With this book I couldn't put it down! I really enjoy the twist that Gerald Morris put on Gawain. Terence and Eileen are the perfect couple and are both fun to read about. I didn't really like the way he portrayed Lancelot, but I really favor him, cause he is my favorite. Of coarse other charecters that he portrayed extremly well, ALMOST made up for it.Over all he did a great job with this tale that spins off A Squire's Tale.
Can't wait to read the next book!

Editorial Review:

Squire Terence and Sir Gawain are off questing again, but this time their journey is overshadowed by their ultimate destination: Gawain is to meet up with the Green Knight in a contest that could easily lead to Gawain's death. Along the way the two have a slew of hair-raising adventures and encounter the usual odd assortment of characters, including the plucky Lady Eileen. Sparks instantly fly between Terence and Eileen as she joins the squire and his knight on their travels. As they weave their way between the world of men and the Other World, Gawain and Terence discover much about themselves. The Squire, His Knight, and His Lady is the sequel to Gerald Morris's debut book, The Squire's Tale, about which the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books raved, "This Arthurian road trip will have readers wondering why there aren't more books like this one and hoping that Morris will do it again." And so he has.

Bring Antiquity Alive 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 27 people found this review helpful.

This is a must have book. The projects are easy, usually with things you have around the house. But the simple, one or two paragraph historical perspective offered about the activity is great for a 5 year old or 18 year old. The Greek and Roman recipes were super and we've kept them on our weekly schedules even though we've moved on to the Middle Ages now. Enjoy this book. You may have lots of crafts and activity books around the house (we do), but you'll do over 75% of these.

A fun supplement to the study of ancient history 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

We prefer a literature approach to homeschooling, but also love books like this that bring in creative hands-on activities. Our preferred history spine for Ancient cultures is "Our Young Folks' Josephus" which not only covers Israel, but also all the cultures that affect her including Greece and Rome. "Classical Kids" is a great addition to our homeschool. It includes fun crafts that reflect ancient Greek and Roman arts, as well as great science projects. Along with "Archimedes and the Door of Science" and "Galen and the Gateway to Medicine" it is a wonderful part of our ancient history studies.

Editorial Review:

Travel back in time to see what life was like in ancient Greece and Rome while having fun with such hands-on activities as making a star gazer, chiseling a clay tablet, weaving Roman sandals, and making a Greek mosaic. 100+ line drawings.

Glossy, thin and large 4 out of 5 stars.

Minimal information but minimal information with excellent photographs. Highlightes some of the basic information on some of the more popular "digs". Probably more suited for the yonger reader or a reader completely ignorant of the field of archaeology. A good starter book.......

Editorial Review:

Superb, full-color photographs of bronzes, buildings, paintings, and pottery offer a unique "eyewitness" view of the world's great civilizations. Hear Ye! Hear Ye! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Catherine Daly-Weir has done an excellent job of presenting a general and yet fairly complete introduction to Heraldry. The illustrations are beautiful and attractive. Obviusly written for the younger reader, adults will enjoy just as well. If you are working on a club/class project and need to creat a Coat of Arms, this book and Rosemary Chorzempa's "Design Your Own Coat of Arms" are all you need! You will have no trouble creating your own Coat of Arms expecially with the plastic stencil which is included in the book. A must have!

Great for younger children 5 out of 5 stars.

I think this is excellent for younger children. It is a good basic introduction.

Excellent book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is great. It covers several aspects of heraldry (history, battlefield, heralds, tournaments, rules, positioning, meaning of designs etc.) without being overwhelming for children. I have used this book with my art therapy students, and my sister has used it with her students with art class...all the students loved it. Even those who can't read can get alot from the book as illustrations are excellent. I highly recommend. Ages 6-adult...I have even used this book to design a shield for myself. For those interested in other sources...Heraldic Design by Hubert Allcock is also a great sourcebook.

Editorial Review:

Why did knights of the Middle Ages have coats of arms? What did the different symbols and colors mean? Could anyone have one? Even girls? Here's a fascinating first look at heraldry with an accompanying stencil so that readers can create a shield with their very own coat of arms.

Ulysses 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Ulysses was a wonderful book! It had a lot of made up characters. It was fun to read about all the weird characters! The author must of had a wonderful imagination! The book had a lot of adventures. Ulysses had to go through a lot! A lot of people gave him a hard time and made his life, life threatening. I hope when your thinking about reading a book you read Ulysses!

all action, plus a little R-rated sex 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the young reader's version of the Odyssey, with every chapter a new adventure, most in 6-8 pages. In each chapter there is a terrific line such as "Heroes are made when retreat is cut off," or "Bad luck makes good stories." As a middle school teacher I use those key lines as focal points for each day's reading. This is one of my all-time favorite books for young adoescents.
As a read-aloud, when Circe confronts Ulysses, the boys are all but paralyzed in trying to not to look at each other or anywhere else - I think they all think they're the only one "thinking it." Yes, mythology is hot.

Editorial Review:

The leader of the Greek forces returning from Troy encounters the Cyclops, the beautiful sorceress Circe and more, as he tries to ward off the anger of the gods.
