Editorial Review:

Our White House: Looking in, Looking Out is an astounding collection featuring more than 100 award-winning children's book authors and illustrators. It is much more than a history about the home and office of U.S. presidents and their families. Commissioned by the National Children's Book and Literary Alliance, this stunning picture book transcends the bounds of educational textbook, or any particular genre, for that matter. It includes essays by historians and well-known nonfiction writers (like David McCullough), fictional stories, poetry (including a memorable poem about Lincoln and a butterfly by Kate DiCamillo), imagined letters to the president, texts of actual speeches, memoir (including an essay by Linda Johnson Robb about the eerie history of a White House room where she once stayed), transcripts of TV interviews, and clever games such as a "Best in Show" presidential pet contest and a "Who's in the House?" presidential board game. Among the book's most captivating features are the "illustration essays" which feature stories or ideas rendered completely through pictures. Notable examples include David Small's sketch journal "Backstairs at the White House,"depicting all the people who work in the house and keep it running, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt's "Four Freedoms" speech illustrated by Calef Brown, Peter Sis, Ed Young, and Stephen Alcorn.

Our White House will likely be a favorite of children--and adults-who love presidential trivia, historical facts, and old stories. Children who weren't White House buffs already will surely be drawn into this colorful, fun history of an iconic building that simultaneously tells the story of the United States. bad rating for the book not the seller!!! 1 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

The book came as described in excellent shape and arrived quickly.
I hate the book though. The rhymes are not very good. Just a few variations of words but nothing to really jump rump for a long period of time to. I was hoping for some of the playground rhymes I can't remember from childhood. It seemed like somebody just wrote down some words that sorta rhymed but had no reason.

should have left some of those old rhymes out 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I love the idea for the book, but the author should have been more selective in choosing rhymes that are appropriate for today's children.

I was disappointed to find rhymes such as these included: "Standing at the bar, smoking a cigar. Laughing at the donkey ha-ha-har!" "All in, a bottle of gin. All out, a bottle of stout." and "Johnny gave me apples, Johnny gave me pears, Johnny gave me fifty cents and kissed me on the stairs. I'd rather scrub the dishes, I'd rather scrub the floor, I'd rather kiss the iceman behind the kitchen door." Other rhymes include a "big fat policeman" who grabs the child and makes him pay a dollar, and a yelling teacher with a great big stick. "How many times were you fired?" the child asks the teacher.

There are so many fun and positive jump rope rhymes, it's too bad the author includes these and others that are just not appropriate even if they were popular 50 years ago.

Editorial Review:

How many times can you jump rope? This rhyme makes the game of rope jumping even more fun. It's a counting rhyme, and there are lots of others like it. There are also red-hot pepper rhymes for jumping very fast, and rhymes for jumpingin and out of the rope. There are even fortune-telling rhymes that answer questions and help you predict the future!

The rhymes in this book began as a way to keep the rhythm while jumping rope, but they also lent poetry and humor to the game. Here are over one hundred traditional rhymes that will make rope jumping challenging and, best of all, fun.

Format is awkward 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This collection was appealing in the store, but after a while, it seemed awkward to heft around this enormous book instead of a slim volume containing a single story. When you've got a squirming toddler at hand, the book gets heavy and inconvenient. I have no complaints with the stories themselves, which are charming and funny. In the end, however, I would have been happier if I had bought the individual volumes.

Classic 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is great. I was so pleased to find it. I had bought one 16 years ago for my children and bought this one for a great-nephew. I hope I can find it for many years to come.

Suess rocks 4 out of 5 stars.

I really like this book as the price was a great deal. Of course I think its better to have the individual books but I couldn't resist the price and its not too bulky for reading, although I wouldn't want the book to be any bigger.

Editorial Review:

In the tradition of Poetry Speaks, the anthology named a Best Book of 2002 by School Library Journal, and praised by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer as "a volume to delight longtime lovers of poetry and to spark new love for poetry, especially among the young," Sourcebooks MediaFusion is proud to introduce the joy of the written and spoken word in Poetry Speaks to Children.

Parents, educators, librarians, and poetry enthusiasts have wondered for years how to get children really interested in poetry. Until now, there hasn't been a collection of poems and poets that spoke directly to that elusive audience. Poetry Speaks to Children cracks through that barrier by packaging the best poems by the best authors along with a CD-making the engrossing and often mischievous verses come alive in the voices of many of the creators.

Poetry Speaks to Children reaches into the world of poetry and pulls out the elements children love: rhyme, rhythm, fun and, every once in a while, a little mischief.

More than 90 poems, for children ages six and up, celebrate the written word and feature a star-studded lineup of beloved poets, including: Roald Dahl; J. R. R. Tolkien; Robert Frost; Gwendolyn Brooks; Ogden Nash; John Ciardi; Langston Hughes; Sonia Sanchez; Seamus Heaney; Canada's best-loved children's poet, Dennis Lee; Rita Dove; Billy Collins; Nikki Giovanni and X. J. Kennedy.

On the accompanying CD, 52 of the poems are brought to life-most read by the poets themselves-allow the reader to hear the words as the poets intended.

Hear Gwendolyn Brooks growl her rhyming verse poem "The Tiger Who Wore White Gloves, or, What You Are You Are" with verve and inflection-relaying the story of the striped cat who "rushed to the jungle fair for something fine to wear," much to the hoots of his jungle peers. Amid jeers, sneers and sighs, the tiger eventually learns to be comfortable in his own striped skin! (or fur as it were!).

Follow Ogden Nash as he tells of the brave little Isabel, who "didn't worry, didn't scream or scurry" when confronted with a ravenous bear, a one-eyed giant or a troublesome doctor. Her clever solutions to problems ("She turned the witch into milk and drank her") will keep even the most reluctant readers interested.

Listen to James Berry, who quells a little girl's anxieties about her color by celebrating the marriage of "night and light," emphasizing how all colors are necessary in nature, in "Okay, Brown Girl, Okay."

Turn the page and tune in . . . kids won't be the only ones hooked!

Step Back in Time 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

To wander through your childhood, as I recently did, I highly recommend Robert Louis Stevenson's, "A Child's Garden of Verses". The illustrations combined with the poetry reminded me of my first introduction to poetry. That early experience instilled a life long love of poetry in myself which I passed along to my children. My son has become "the family poet" so I purchased this volume for him for Christmas. Poetry conveys in a few eloquent words the emotions that no other form of writing can. We would be much poorer humans without this medium.

Editorial Review:

Here is a delightful look at childhood, written by master poet and storyteller Robert Louis Stevenson. In this collection of sixty-six poems, Stevenson recalls the joys of his childhood, from sailing boats down a river, to waiting for the lamplighter, to sailing off to foreign lands in his imagination. Tasha Tudor's watercolor paintings evoke a simpler time in the past, and celebrate two of the things she loves most -- children and nature. Her talents are the perfect match for these inspiring poems, making this a handsome gift edition that will be cherished by families for generations.

Not for the moraly minded 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This is a beautiful book and I have only read to Repunzal, but that is when it fell apart for us. In the end of the story the blinded prince is able, by some miracle, to find his beloved Repunzal whom he was to marry. But when he finds her she is not alone. No, two small children are with her. It is THEIR twins! It may not bother many to read this to their children, but I don't want my child believing it is okay to have premarital flings.

A Great Addition to Your Home Library 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book two years ago when my daughter was 3 years old. We had just moved to China for my husband's work and were then without access to a public (English language)library. This one book added so much depth to our home library. Two years later we are still having fun rereading many stories plus we are trying to read all the ones we haven't read, yet. I think we only have about 4 stories left. The illustrations are also beautiful. We are currently enjoying the section of stories that are excerpts from longer stories. These passages are giving me ideas of which full-length books I will want to buy next.

Editorial Review:

This one-volume library of classic children's literature contains nursery rhymes, poems, fables, and stories, and is lavishly illustrated with more than two hundred full-color drawings by sixteen different artists.

This book was pretty cool. It had a decoder thing for those symbols at the bottoms of the pages of the Artemis Fowl books.
If you love Artemis Fowl, this book is a must-have.

Atemis Fowl Files was a great success! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Artemis Fowl Files is a guide on the first couple books to the Artemis Fowl series. The hundred-page book included two short stories on the lives of Corporal Holly Short and the somewhat successful theif Mulch Diggums, before Artemis Fowl revealed his threat the the fairy world. These two stories are must-reads to Artemis Fowl fans, because of the old charecters put into younger points of view that keep the main points, such as Holly's stubbornness to Mulch's not-so-flattering comments, so that they see the two and their enviornment afresh in a loving way.

Also included are diagrams of the LEP helmet and a few other inventions, a quiz to see what type of fairy you are most like, and interviews on Holly, Artemis, Root, Butler, Mulch, and Foaly.

EXTRAS INCLUDE:

* "Behind-the-scenes" interviews with major characters including: Artemis, Holly, Foaly, Mulch, and Eoin Colfer himself

* Coded section from the Fairy Book for kids to translate

* A section for Fairy Spotters including the different categories of Fairy and their physical characteristics and personality traits, including: Elves, Trolls, Sprites, Pixies Goblins, Dwarves and Centaurs

Editorial Review:

Editor Tonya Bolden makes no bones about it: "It's no secret. This book is about girl build-up." Accordingly, the pieces collected in 33 Things Every Girl Should Know have the spicy flavor of rabble-rousing. But instead of a radical call to arms, readers will find more of a call to self-esteem, self-respect, and a summons to keep their eyes on a bright future. Subtitled "Stories, Songs, Poems, and Smart Talk by 33 Extraordinary Women," this collection offers young women first-hand advice from such diverse luminaries as Lynda Barry, Sandra Cisneros, Johnetta Cole, Alice Hoffman, Lauren Hutton, M. E. Kerr, Rebecca Lobo, Natalie Merchant, Faith Ringgold, Tabitha Soren, Vera Wang, Wendy Wasserstein, and Sigourney Weaver. These grown-up girls hearken from many realms and backgrounds, with widely varying experiences and skills, but all join their voices here to offer insight, advice, and a surprising expanse of common ground.

From a fiercely funny comic strip about mean girls, to a moving essay about living with spina bifida, to a forensic discussion of why it's not a crime for girls to love science, these stories reflect and encourage female wit, wisdom, and perseverance. Most of all, the essential 33 things display the infinite range of options for girls, and will inspire young women to pursue the pathways paving their dreams.
