Great Book 4 out of 5 stars.

I loved this book, but it was a little long for one sitting of elementary aged students (K-3). Broken into smaller arts as you do the experiments over a week or two it works great.

Editorial Review:

"Oh, to be a kid in Mr. Whiskers’ primary science classes! The next best thing is doing hands-on explorations at school or at home with this guide." — KIRKUS REVIEWS

Mr. Whiskers, the teacher, has that wild look in his eyes again. That’s the look that means, Get ready for hands-on science! This time the subject matter is . . . matter. Using seven science stations, Mr. Whiskers encourages his kids to use all their senses to make observations and draw conclusions. Everyone’s a scientist in Mr. Whiskers’ class, where hands-on mini-experiments lead to Big Ideas — and promote an ongoing passion for independent, open-ended discovery.

I love this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

What a great way to learn mathematical concepts! My granddaughters and I had to try each of Zack's classroom demonstrations for ourselves just to see how they really worked. Math was never my favorite subject in school, but the mathematical principles illustrated in this book are presented in such an entertaining way that I found myself wanting to see more books like this. Great Book!

Great Teaching Aid 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book as a way to provide my 6th grade math students with some fun ways to understand shapes. What I liked about this book was that it wasn't just discussing shapes, but covered perimeter and area as well. The "magic tricks" made the class sit up and pay attention when I read it to them. And, they all wanted to try out the "tricks" themselves!

Grandmother from Massachusetts 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Great fun! Activities require very easily accessible materials that educate and entertain. We took this book to a family reunion and had everyone from age 8 to 88 trying to do the experiments the scientific experts claim are Impossible. Now, every time my grandchildren (ages 6 and 10)visit, this is the first book they drag off the shelf. This is a timeless winner!

This is a great book full of science challenges. 5 out of 5 stars.

Bet You Can't is a wonderful tool for teachers and students. Science is presented as fun challenges. It can be used in the classroom setting in many ways--as independent centers, and as science process presentations. Students are amazed at the activities. This book helps students understand science in a fun.

Editorial Review:

The start to a brand-new children's series puts the fun back in science with a little fizz, foam, and chemistry magic.
It's a sure-fire formula for selling success.

What could be more entertaining than grossing out parents with a homemade batch of disgusting runny slime? Or making miniature cave stalactites and stalagmites out of saturated salt solutions and string? These 50 irresistible experiments, explained in terms that children will both understand and appreciate, show just how enjoyable science can be--and that's definitely cool. Even the look of the book has real appeal. All the activities appear on colorful illustrated spreads with an engaging cast of kid characters who show how the science fun is done. Most of the experiments use ordinary household materials, and they provide some delightful visual and tactile effects. See what happens when cola and mint come together. (Hint: take cover!) Watch a rubber balloon inflate itself over a bottle. Bounce a raw egg--with no breakage. Every idea is a winner.

Time for Kids - Bats 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book for my first grade classroom. We do a unit of study on the elements of a non-fiction text. The Time for Kids books are wonderful for this unit. They have terrific pictures (which the kids love), and many elements of a non-fiction text, such as labeling, comparisions, captions, glossary, types of print, etc. I would highly recommend this book - really all of the time for kids books - to those looking for appropriate non-fiction books for a first grade classroom. The level 1 and 2 books are most appropriate.

Special features include How Big?, Take a Close Look, Did You Know?, Words to Know, Fun Facts and 27 full color photographs, as well as a full page, labeled diagram showing body parts.

No Champion Science Fair Book! 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have looked at tons of Science Fair project books. Although this book looked the most promising because the experiments were not ordinary, it turned out to be a flop. Full of frustrations and wasted time on everyone's part.

This is one of the most jumbled unorganized, unclear Science Fair project instructions I have ever seen. I was hoping to get a lot out of it for my children (ages 11, 8, and 7) who were getting ready to do Science Fair projects. We picked several to do. One of them was the experiment on generating electricity through a hydroelectric generator. We secured the materials over several days; followed the 3-page instruction and set out to follow each one. It turned out very frustrating for my kids. The instructions were not really step by step. As soon as you follow the first instruction you realize the author forgot to put the information that would have been helpful for the previous step--like coiling 200 yards of wire only to find out the next two steps had you do it clockwise or counterclockwise. The instruction was not very clear. Very unorganized thought process.
As for the magnet, a sidebar for a young elementary student on how to figure out the north and south pole of a magnet would have been helpful.

Secondly, the instruction was not clear how long the whole project would take a child to do. You had to figure that out as you go along. It was not easy to determine on each page. Thirdly, it was unclear whether the project was specific to a particular age group. The level of difficulty was not clear. It would have been helpful as the child was picking each one.

My kids and I tried it. We gave it a try. It had a potential to be a good reference book but it was too unorganized. Not a Champion Science Fair book as the cover would have one believe!

Editorial Review:

With these 100 proven projects, students will have a really winning science fair experience—and hone their analytical skills, too. Best of all, the author makes even the most complicated subjects—such as DNA research—marvelously clear. The wide range of topics offers something for everyone: the many faces of acids and bases, the science of life (cells, enzymes, algae), perfect plant projects, the nature of hot and cold, chemical conundrums, and lots more. Students can construct a solar oven in a pizza box, figure out how many phone books can balance on a couple of eggshells, concoct a “snail salad,” and other blue-ribbon ideas.
