Rocks Rock! 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful introduction to concepts for your young geologist as well as a great place to find ideas for activities and experiements to aid her in her exploration of the earth! I've seen some of the activities presented in this book before, but several were new to me. The text is written in a witty manner, yet still provides a wealth of information.

Familiar Territory 3 out of 5 stars.
18 of 25 people found this review helpful.

I've looked over the book, and a friend who teaches science from ages 6-14 read it. It covers a lot of familiar territory found in other books. There were very few interesting or unusual new ideas presented. It would take more than presented here to get a young student interested in geology.

This book ROCKS! 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm not sure why the previous reviewer thought there was nothing to this book, perhaps they did not actually USE the book themselves. I HAVE used this book for my children's homeschool study, and it is FANTASTIC! The concepts found in the book can be elaborated upon for older children, and used ~as is~ for younger kids, while the activities very well lend themselves to cementing basic geology into ANYbody's head, young or old. Plate tectonics with graham crackers, earth's crust with a composite homemade marshmellow- peppermint candy- chocolate-coated lolli-pop, sand-box crater creater... and the list goes on! My children have absolutely LOVED this book! And quite to the contrary of the previous reviewer's opinion, it has gotten them FAR MORE interested in geology then they ever knew they were!

Editorial Review:

Presents fifty hands-on activities to introduce the science of geology and explain the formation and history of the earth.

Hands on History 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

We are homeschoolers using this book in part of a unit on Inventors. My eight year old is able to read and enjoy the history behind the different inventions. I thought it would just be a "how to" book, but we are both really enjoying the well written historical information in this book. It really makes Leonardo and the world he lived in come alive. I like to just browse through the book and look at all of Leonardo's sketches as well.

The pictures and instructions are fairly easy to follow. The inventions do use common items, but we don't always have the right "common" items at the right times. We have modified most of the directions to use what we actually have in our house. Today we wanted to make the camera obscura, but we just threw out our last empty Pringles can... guess we'll be eating lots of chips in the next week :)

Editorial Review:

From armored tanks and gliders to "plastic glass" and drawing machines, this interactive book explores the incredible mind of Leonardo da Vinci through hands-on building projects and activities. Most of Leonardo's inventions were never made in his lifetime and remained sketches in his famous notebooks; kids examine some of these original sketches and learn about the models he made of his inventions. From there they delve into detailed step-by-step instructions, diagrams, and templates for each project, which are interspersed with historical facts, biographical anecdotes, and trivia. Most of the building can be done using simple household supplies: construction paper, tape, markers, glue, cardboard tubes, aluminum foil, and cardboard boxes. Background about the Renaissance as a period of remarkable achievement in art and science appears throughout the book.

Looks great, but... 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The pictures in this book are wonderful, however, our success rate is 0.5 out of 4 for the experiments. I am sure many of the experiments will work, but not the ones we selected. Many of the experiments are quite elaborate, so unless your child is very ambititous, you will be doing quite alot of work.

Great fun in science! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a big, colorful, fun science book. It is full of fun practical science demonstrations, many of which can be done with common household items. This book is at a level that young gradeschoolers can understand, and covers science topics as high as middle school levels. It covers eleven different areas from air and gases to motion and machines. I have done many of these projects with my children. I even used the "Make a Rainbow" demo from the Color section in my Sunday school class while teaching about Noah. This book is a great addition to a homeschool library.

A Favorite for my 3 year old! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

In 1990, my husband went to the library and brought home " gravity is a mystery" for our son to read. He loved it! It was his favorite book for weeks! Every night one of us would have to read it to him. This is a fun book that everyone should get a chance to read.

Gravity is a mystery 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is as important as it is wonderful. It brings home the Big Secret about science that escapes most people: Science is about the unknown, not the known. There are lots of mysteries out there; the business of science is to change the unknown into the known, which is the lesson, I think, of Franklyn Branley's masterpiece.

Not Just for Preschoolers 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Although this book will painlessly teach your four year old what science is and what that abstract concept, gravity, is, it is also excellent for a teenager who is struggling through a physics course. As Einstein said, you don't really understand a concept until you can explain it to your grandmother. Well, this is a book for Grandmother.

Editorial Review:

What goes up must come down.

Everybody knows that. But what is it that pulls everything from rocks to rockets toward the center of the earth? It's gravity. Nobody can say exactly what it is, but gravity is there, pulling on everything, all the time. With the help of an adventurous scientist and his fun-loving dog, you can read and find out about this mysterious force.

I never realized how beautiful science can be. 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I had never really thought how beautiful and mysterious and colorful and delightful science could be. This book inspires me, a person who has never really liked science all that much. Now I do! And I will pass that on to my kids when we do the Chromatography Art Experiment and separate colors on absorbant paper. Can't wait!

Science made EASY! 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This book is simply great. I bought several of Jean Potter's other books so when I found her name on line, I decided to buy this one. It is everything I thougt it would be and MORE! I love art, but never thought the two mixed. This is a book for every kid, teacher and parent!

Gets Kids' Attention with Art and Science as Friends! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

These science experiments all have a flashy art component, either becoming an art project, or employing unusual use of color or sparkle or something artistic and flashy. This is one of those books that boys love around the age of 7 or 8 especially. It's art with spark!! It will get kids' attention and be fun for everyone to do together. For example, I really like Chromatography on page 97, where colored paints or food coloring are absorbed through absorbent paper strips. But there's a surprise! The color pigments separate as they are absorbed and move up the paper, not acting like normal colors that kids are used to. Fascinating to kids, and really pretty to see. The book says : ScienceArts is a fun way for children to learn basic science concepts through easy art activities. (or just enjoy the art!). I vote 5 stars for the kids that I know who love this.

Editorial Review:

Each page of this exploration of science through art features a recipe-style science activity, complete with simple instructions and illustrations, that teaches young readers a scientific concept. All ages.
