Good for a beginning homeschooler for science 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 34 people found this review helpful.

This book has very many things to do for science, but we have been homeschooling for 10 years, so there was nothing new in it for us! If you are new to teaching or homeschooling this may be just what you need though. It is very nicely laid out and easy to understand.

Editorial Review:

The book was written to open the door to, and invite your students into, the World of Science. -- There they can explore, think and wonder - and find out that anyone can experiment and learn; that the only thing you truly need to study science is an inquiring mind; and that science is all around us, all you have to do is look! -- This wonderful book features more than 250 kid-tested experiments covering geography, chemistry, meteorology, geology, animal biology, plant biology and engineering. -- Simple experiments and activities show students how to build a mountain to demonstrate contour lines, observe how heat makes chemicals change; use Epsom salt to form stalactites and stalagmites, measure the weight of the atmosphere, start an ant colony, build a two-ring paper airplane and more! -- Also includes information on science fair projects. Ages 8-12. Glossary index, 491 pp., softcover.

A Fine Biography 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This interesting biography with excellent illustrations and primary source photographs provides facts and fun! An excellent index and table of contents provides easy navigation. The chapters are well-written, beginning with a interest-grabbing first chapter describing Edison's introduction of the electric lights to the public. Historical events and settings build a broad understanding of the lives and times of inventors and builders who paved the way for modern times.

Editorial Review:

Another good book from the Exporatorium 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Most of the Exploratorium books that I have purchased have been activity-based, so they're great for grown-ups (teachers, parents, etc.) who want to lead kids in discovery as well as for the kids who want to try things out for themselves. As a science instructor for elementary-aged students (pre-K through 5th grade), there are several of the activities in this book that I am going to use for my kids, but it seems well suited for the kids themselves because it also gives a lot of basic background information on everything from static to DNA. This particular book from Exploratorium is a bit different from the others because of its extra background information and would be a great book for an elementary-aged child who loves science and wants more information, as well as hands-on activities to explore.

I've been voted "Coolest Grandad"! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I am well over 13 years of age! -- I am approaching my 75th birthday. I bought Exploratopia for one of my grandsons and all grandchildren (who have reached the 'use of reason' thought Grandad's present to Aaron the best of all.
Not only is it a book of discovery -- every discovery gives you an experiment that you can to to illustrate what you have just read.
Thank ytou very much!

Editorial Review:

Combining fun and interactive activities, this guide will have kids captivated for hours constructing fantastic racing cars with the basics of only rubber bands, cardboard, and glue. These simple instructions with templates allow budding engineers to gain hands-on experience as they learn not only how to build a basic racer, but how to make modifications such as aluminum foil axle bearings, steering mechanisms, hinges, cam shafts, and wheels made out of old CDs. This helpful resource has step-by-step instructions for making a basic rubber-band model, a railroad push-car, and a high-speed racer. Other unique projects include Oscar the Laughing Clown, which has a jaw mechanism that opens and closes when it moves, and Spot the Dog, which has a moving tail. Children can even learn how to build a rubber band car big enough for a human. Exploring wheels, bearings, and friction, kids will learn not only how to make speedy racers but also the science that makes the process work.

Lots of Fun for elementary-age kids! 4 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book when my daughter was in first grade and find myself using it on a regular basis. There are activity suggestions for every day of the year to help you and your kids learn more about nature, together! There are also games to play and suggestions for stories and poems to read. I find that the ideas are easily adaptable to each child and a great reference for the times when your child says "mom, I'm bored". An all-around great book for parents who want to teach their children a greater appreciation for nature and the world around them. I learned a lot, too!

Excellent classroom tool! 5 out of 5 stars.

I referred to this book often in a Migrant Head Start Program. The kids love the activities, and so do the adults!

The creativity of each activity is amazing. They are organized on a day-by-day basis, corresponding to the different seasons. For example, in fall kids are painting with leaves, watching birds fly south, and creating projects with apples; in spring, they observe green life under the snow and plant seeds which they can tend into fall. It is the perfect book with which to cultivate a life-long love for nature in children living in a world of rapid environmental change.

Start learning today!

Editorial Review:

Shore to desert, country to city, exciting nature activities await discovery from beneath th smallest rock to the vast sky above.
With a full year of "nature-nurturing" activities, Milord lauches kids on a lifelong love affair with the natural world.

Packed with Great Information & Projects! 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Not many readers know about this book that is literally the most "Complete" book on science fair projects out there. This is an all-new revision of the original book that came out in the 90's and it has been updated with great information, drawings, photos and more. It is the best resource for students who need to do a science fair project and need to know everything from finding a topic to carrying out an experiment to delivering a presentation before judges. Resourceful ways in which to find a topic, where to go for help, how to measure and calculate data, etc. There are also 50 classic sample project outlines with illustrations that give students ideas for projects in all scientific disciplines, an ample list of possible project topics, a detailed list of possible subject areas to find a topic in, with a useful list of websites where a student can find information on almost any topic, scientific supply stores across the US and Canada, a list of every science fair in the country and around the world and their corresponding websites (where available), and a list other competitions students can enter their projects in. In all my years of working with our school science fair, this book is still the authority on the subject. Highly recommended for all in grades 5-12.
