Great Project Book for Kids 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

My eight year old son has become very interested in mechanical and electrical projects. We picked this book up at the library, but quickly saw that this is a "keeper." It has many projects that will help him learn how things work as he builds a working model cable car / gondola (his first major project from this book), boat locks, several types of bridges, and other fascinating projects. I suspect he'll use at least one of these for future projects in school. The book is rated for 11 years & up, but with a little help, even kids a little younger can have a lot of fun.

Editorial Review:

Building is a unique blend of imaginative activities, experiments and science facts that helps develop scientific thought. The vast "Make it Work" series teaches scientific principles through the hands-on process of making science work. It's an invaluable science series for school and home, mixing hobby and science in an effort to show kids how to observe, collate information, and reach conclusions. The easy-to-follow instructions and helpful color photos make it a great resource for children ages 8-11.

School Library Journal says the Make it Work! Science books are "A Great Series."

Editorial Review:

"This book is a good starting place for finding successful science-fair projects."--School Library Journal

"Can provide needed direction to parents and students facing looming classroom deadlines."--The Los Angeles Times

"Offers a real variety to young scientists."--Parent Council(R), Selected as Outstanding

Any kid can be a winner, and take top honors at the school science fair, by picking one of these 100 proven first-place projects. Among the cool ideas: demonstrate the action of magnetic fields, make a moon box, build "ant architecture," and measure static electricity. Plus, there's plenty of fun in creating homemade perfume and erupting volcanoes; doing a bubble gum plant graft; and building a big green solar machine. Youngsters will find plenty of hints for crafting eye-catching displays, too.

wonderful help with the gradual transition 4 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

While this book is chock-full of ideas which any homeschooling family can use, or anyone who spends time with small children for that matter, I think its best fit is for the preschool teacher in a traditional classroom. I bought it after having quite a library of Waldorf books and didn't find it as useful, but after having read through it several times over, I can definitely see its niche -- and it does a tremendous job once you have it in the right slot. If you are already working with children and have decided to gradually transform your classroom into a Waldorf environment, this book is absolutely the one to buy. Combine it with A Child's Seasonal Treasury by Betty Jones and you'll have a Waldorf kindy classroom in a bottle. (Betty Jones includes lots of verses, rhymes, fingerplays, and other movement activities plus art and recipes but doesn't give much of a context for how they are done -- while this book covers mainly handwork projects but gives more help with making the transition. They complement each other perfectly.)

Carol Petrash, a warm and inspiring writer, takes you by the hand at the beginning of Autumn. With ideas for how to gradually transform your classroom environment, she introduces each season and has you start making changes -- first a little in Autumn, then more ideas for Winter, continuing on with new changes in Spring, and so on -- and shares her ideas for "Bringing Nature In" (self-explanatory) and "Supplying the Missing Links" (which focuses on re-establishing connections that children are missing with the natural world, such as how butter is made), both recurring categories throughout the book.

She also gives general craft ideas organized by season throughout the book (such as Wheat Weaving, Leaf Crowns, Lanterns, Star Windows, Finger Knitting, May Baskets, Shooting Star Streamer Balls, Walnut Boats, Paper Birds) but "Bringing Nature In" and "Supplying the Missing Links" are the real heart of the book -- and what makes it such a gem. Some examples are Creating a Seasonal Garden, From Wheat to Bread, Pumpkins, Indian Corn, Beeswax, Butter, Wool, Gardening with Children, Building Playhouses Outdoors, Berries, and Basket Weaving. For each, she gives several ideas so you really get to explore the topic. Instead of just one activity, it is more like a "weekly theme" on Berries, perfect for how a classroom teacher would use this book. She even includes a sample field trip slip.

If you're familiar with Waldorf there's not a lot here that will be new, but if you are just starting out, this books covers a lot of ground at a very reasonable pace -- and a reasonable price. Instead of tearing your hair out trying to replace all your children's toys at once and learning how to bake from scratch, etc., try this book and let it slowly help you find your way. Enjoy this year of change, and by the summer you'll be proudly observing the transformation in your home and in your lives and you will take much pleasure and pride in watching your children grow, learn, and flourish.

Magic Science 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book is exactly what I wanted. It gives step-by-step instructions for quick "magic" science activities. The explanations are clear and concise. The table of contents categorizes the activities so that I can easily identify those that correlate with the objectives I teach. I can see using these activities as introductions to units or as simple "experiments" for my class experts.

The ultimate guide to your microscope 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I bought three of these books for my grandkids. I wanted to introduce them to an exciting hobby. This book turned out to be a good choice, even for teenagers. The paper quality and pictures are very good. It covers a variety of subjects you can study under the microscope. I would even recommend it to adults who are not familiar with microscopes. It is just a pleasant book to browse through and enjoy. I have worked with microscopes for many years and even I enjoy looking through this book.

Editorial Review:

Looking at little things—things too small to see with the naked eye—can be big fun. It’s certainly smart science, and award-winning authors Shar Levine and Leslie Johnstone are here to show kids the basics of creating their own professional-quality slides and using their own microscopes. A whole world will open up to budding scientists as they learn to identify the microscope’s different pieces, practice focusing, and prepare different kinds of samples for viewing. Illustrated throughout with photomicrographs (pictures taken through a microscope), and complete with a reproducible form for documenting specimens, this fascinating, in-depth guide explains how to put bugs, water, food, plants and pollen, and even parts of the body (like fingernails) under the scope for a close-up glimpse. Of course, there are troubleshooting answers to common questions and safety instructions for parents and teachers, too.

Finally, Someone Wrote This! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Leave it to DK Publishing (of Eyewitness Books fame) to create something this cool! Yes, it's the one boys ages 7-13 have been waiting for: a reader-friendly book about cars.

Car Science is divided into four sections. The first is Power. My favorite spread in this section is "Making gasoline," but the part about gears is also fascinating, as is "Bugatti Veyron," about a car with 1001-brake horsepower, which means it can go from 249 mph to a stop in under 10 seconds.

Section 2 is Speed. It begins with a colorful chart comparing the speeds of different animals and vehicles, from a snail's .03 mph to the Thrust SSC's land-speed record of 763 mph. I also liked finding out how something as odd as a boxfish could give designers an idea for the shape of a car in "Inspired by Nature."

Section 3 addresses Handling. My favorite spread title here is "Wall of Death," with "Monster Trucks" and "Car-crash Science" tied for second.

Section 4, Technology, starts off by explaining what cars are made of, moving on to topics like scuba cars before ending happily with "Top 10 Crazy Ideas."

Car Science is written at about a 3rd grade level, but its appeal is much broader. The book serves as a luring introduction to understanding how cars work. My only request is that someone now write a book explaining cars and their engines in more detail, perhaps at a 6th-8th grade level. (The next one "up" I found was for high schoolers and adults.) In the meantime, boys--and girls--should take a look at this fast, shiny sports car of a book. VROOM! VROOM!

Editorial Review:

Car Science is an intuitive and user-friendly children's science book based on a topic dear to children's hearts: cars. In four sections, the book includes: a timeline of automotive invention; a "how it works" guide to modern cars, with exploded diagrams, cutaways, and computer graphics; key physics concepts, all relating to cars and how they run; and a look into the future of cars, including eco-friendly concept cars.

Calling all home educators! Here is a way to teach the periodic
table to your children using witty text, amusing illustrations, and
fascinating do-at-home experiments. Dr. Brandolini really helps
young and old alike to understand the science found in our everyday lives
through this intriguing book. This is one of those books that your kids will WANT to pull down from the home library shelves to enjoy.

Absolutely Wonderful Chemistry 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

If you teach the elements and/or the periodic table to elementary students and want to make them come alive, this book is a definite must have. It is chock full of easy to prepare investigations as well as "element essentials" thumbnail sketches of various elements. Most materials are ones you have on hand either at home or school. Without a doubt, it is the best elementary chemistry book I have ever seen.

Editorial Review:

For ages 8+. What do elements have to do with your everyday life? They make your world -- and beyond -- move and groove, fizz, bubble and flash! Discover what you have in common with party balloons, footballs, computer chips, pizza dough, table salt and TV screens; "Break" a water molecule, produce fluorescent light (without using a switch!), enjoy a half-life snack, compare antiperspirants, and separate the iron from your breakfast cereal!; Find out why broccoli smells, why soda makes a coin shine, the secret of static cling, and what makes a smoke detector work.
