I had not read about Toby Longdirk for years, and it was only when I was about halfway through Demon Rider that I begin to recall having read Demon Sword quite a few years ago. Demon Rider was the right length, and the plot twists were excellent. There is a little problem with the time travelling mechanism used by the hob, but it appears to have been the only way Mr. Hood could comment on the horrors of the Inquisition from a surviving victim's point of view. His adaptation of Don Quixote into a living character in the book is marvelous. The necessity of including the Inquisition in a book where the fundamental belief in CHristian Faith is not a given posed some real obstacles, however I am impressed with how Mr Hood pulled it off. There is sufficient humor to go with the swords and sorcery to make this book a very enjoyable read. It fits into alternate history nicely, providing a very human protagonist. The metahporical dealing with inner demons is well resolved by the example of selflessness. Perhaps a lesson more people in the modern world coud use. Suitable for mature teens.

Editorial Review:

Tobias Strangerson, known as Toby Longdirk has repeatedly escaped capture by King Nevil and his henchman, Baron Oreste of Utrecht. Traveling from Scotland to England, to Bordeaux and Spain, only Toby knows that the king is possessed by a demon and therefore is both immortal and devoted to evil. As Toby struggles against his own inner demons, he must start a crusade against the enemy, depose a tyrant, and restore legitimate rule to the land.

This story is a rousing adventure story of the sort that one might find written by Alexander Pope but with magic and involving the chaotic state of Italy during the time of the condotierre, generals for hire during the Renaissance. One might also compare it to the movie Ladyhawke, but on a much greater scale. The story follows Toby Longdirk and his sidekick Hamish in their efforts to stop the demon-possessed King of England from conquering all of Europe. Along the way, for a change, the spectre of true love and a lady in distress, in the form of Princess Elizabeth of England, appears to complicate things. It gets suitably Macchiavelian toward the end, but I eagerly await further novels. I am not one of these readers who can only handle straightforward storylines. This is not a childrens book, it has too much detail and plot twists to appeal to the Saturday morning cartoon violence crowd.

Editorial Review:

Demons on Loan

When the Scottish outlaw Tobias Longdirk used gramarye, or magic, to defeat the Fiend, he did more than save Europe from abject slavery. He made himself the most feared and most envied man in all Italy.

Now, with the hordes poised once more to sweep down over the Alps, Toby and his friend Hamish must unite the quarreling city-states when no ally can be trusted and traitors lurk in every shadow. At stake is far more than just a continent's destiny. At stake is a woman's love!

I have read many different types of books and this is one of the best I have read. It kept my interest from beginning to end. I could not wait to see what was going to happen next. It was very hard to put down once I started reading. I really enjoyed this book.

Editorial Review:

The outlaw Longdirk wields a wicked sword in the Scottish highlands of 1244, but strange demon winds are howling across the lochs and the enemy Sassenach king is a sorcerer whose Black Arts can free Europe from the Golden Horde.
