Tales of future wonders that stand out. 5 out of 5 stars.

Graphic novels are usually overlooked or thought of as the big brother of comic books, but some of them, stand out as surpassing what can be done in either text or art alone.

The 2001 Nights series is one of them.

Imagine the various yet interconnected Arabian Nights tales mixed with a bittersweet realistic hard sci-fi reality. 2001 Nights uses the anime drawing style to deliver stories of mankind's first steps into space.

Each story is set years apart, at the next logical step in the possible evolution of spacetravel. Some are fairly far-fetched (the Devil Planet, about a world made of anti-matter) while others seem sad and poingant (I am Rocket, where a robot probe is given artificial intellegence and sent out to a neighboring star never to find out that it has become obsolete).

But all of these form a wonderful weaving pattern that should be enjoyed by anyone who likes well written stories.

On my list of top 10 graphic novels of all time 5 out of 5 stars.

I LOVE THIS SERIES. It's filled with heart and emotion and coupled with great artwork. The feeling of vastness and numbness in exploring the endless realm of space oozes from these stories. One begins to realize how small we are in the grand scale of the galaxy. The stories in this volume continue the linear storytelling of mankind's advancements into space exploration, so read Volume 1 first! Great great stuff. I'm surprised this doesn't make it on the top 10 essential graphic novels of all time. I mean, I love Alan Moore and all, but he's not the end all, be all to great comic storytelling - sheesh! Try Yukinobu Hoshino's masterpiece, you'll not be disappointed!

A Manga Odyssey 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

2001: A Space Odyssey is one of my favorite movies for its detailed and believable vision of a future that is still largely unrealized. I was pleasantly surprised to see Yukinobu Hoshino pay homage to Kubrick's visual style throughout much of 2001 Nights, in scenes that were recognizably inspired by the film. The skillfully-rendered black-and-white panels throughout the book are evocative of the silence and vastness of space, yet the human characters are drawn with grace and style, without the occasional cartoonish facial expressions that mar other manga I've read. This stylistic discipline helps to keep the work focused and believable.

Aside from the fantastic artwork, the author lays out a sweeping story of humankind's quest to find its destiny beyond Earth, told in a series of time-separated vignettes. He touches upon issues of cooperation, isolation, exploration, greed and even religion -- and manages to pull this off without becoming trite.

It's pretty tough to describe in words something that is so visually distinctive and compelling. I originally ordered this book on a whim, but it has just blown me away.

Most influential AI SF 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This is book ignited my interest in AI. I recently bought a used copy, signed by Hogan. Looking at it again, Hogan is a much weaker writer than I had remembered, but his vision was dead on. Clarke's HAL is completely unrealistic in comparision to Hogan's Hector and Sparticus.

Editorial Review:

Midway through the 21st century, an integrated global computer network manages much of the world's affairs. A proposed major software upgrade - an artificial intelligence - will give the system an unprecedented degree of independent decision-making, but serious questions are raised in regard to how much control can safely be given to a non-human intelligence. In order to more fully assess the system, a new space-station habitat - a world in miniature - is developed for deployment of the fully operational system, named Spartacus. This mini-world can then be "attacked" in a series of escalating tests to assess the system's responses and capabilities. If Spartacus gets out of hand, the system can be shut down and the station destroyed... unless Spartacus decides to take matters into its own hands and take the fight to Earth.

Best Sci-Fi Graphic Novel I've ever read. 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book, along with its 2 companion books in the series, were truly extraordinary Sci-Fi stories, with marvelous art. I've read hundreds of graphic novels so far, haven't seen anything quite like this; just coudn't put the books down. You can't go wrong... PS: I've also reviewed hundreds of graphic novels on my personal homepage. Give it a shot.

The Most Fantastic & Fascinating Sci-Fi Ever! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book deserve the best acclaim I can think of and much much more. And 'Graphic Novel' is the perfect medium for the stories this author tells. The drawings are so realistic that you almost feel like you are out there in the space, engulfed by fathomless dark void, and slowly feeling your way out of it into an unknown, yet somehow familiar world the universe provides.

I couldn't believe one person thought of all these stories. The author puts strong yet imaginative scientific ground for all his stories (nicest Scientific anecdote lessons I ever got) and from there, go on to unfold his inspirational stories. If you want to fully appreciate this book, you better read it in order. The first book of the series is "2001 Nights" and then "2001 Nights: Journey to Tomorrow" and then this book, "Children of the Earth". Each story is very distinct and excellent in its own right, but read together, they provide subtle but much bigger and deeper wonder.

If you are fan of Science Fictions, you will love these books. If you are not a fan of Science Fiction, you will still love these books for the all-too-emphatic struggle and hope experienced by the characters in the story.

P.S. I had this weird feeling that the author somehow had a time machine and actually went to the future to learn how the history of space exploration is gonna unfold.
