Editorial Review:

For years, social scientists, journalists and media critics have lamented the passing of New England style town meetings and the replacement of public settings that allowed for face to face discussions of the political issues of the day by controlled environments such as the workplace and the mall. In addition, much political "conversation" and discussion has not been participated in but overhead through mediated formats such as talk radio or the television talk show. The consequence of these trends has resulted in much hand wringing over the decline of civic engagement, the rise of public apathy, and a lack of deliberation about the political questions of the day. However, there has been much optimism as of late about a new forum of public political conversation that has emerged in the last decade: electronic discussion. Electronic discussion has been touted as a mechanism for true public discourse. It invites participation by the lay person who can now engage in an open political discourse heard potentially by many others. Electronic discussion comes in three forms, all of which most moderately computer literate people are familiar with: electronic bulletin boards, e-mail, chat rooms, and the most talked about as of late, the web log or blog.

Despite the growth of various forms of online discussion, their impact on American political life is only beginning to be examined systematically. In Politics Online Richard Davis will provide a thorough analysis detailing the political attitudes, behavior, and demographic nature of the electronic discussion community contrasting that community with the general public. He will demonstrate that online political discussion at present still lacks representative qualities essential to serve as measures of public sentiment and therefore fails as a credible gauge for charting public opinion. In addition, he will provide a much-needed discussion of the nature of public space one that suggests characteristics of online discussion essential to create the ideal public space originally envisioned by proponents of online discussion.

a possible future? 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Bruns analyses the rise of a means of news gathering and dissemination. Where people who are not full time media professionals (or even part time) can contribute comments and other content, like pictures and video, towards a hot topic.

The book is certainly aware of the pitfalls. Like how true or accurate are these observations? Do those commenting have any bias? Actually, perhaps the biggest problem is that much of the spontaneous reporting is simply badly written and thus not that interesting to read.

Even so, the immediacy and breadth of the observations makes this a useful complement to traditional news. The events that occurred after the book was printed - the London subway bombings and Hurrican Katrina, show that a mass audience does exist for this new type of reporting.

Editorial Review:

Gatewatching: Collaborative Online News Production is the first comprehensive study of the latest wave of online news publications. The book investigates the collaborative publishing models of key news Websites, ranging from the worldwide Indymedia network to the massively successful technology news site Slashdot, and further to the multitude of Weblogs that have emerged in recent years. Building on collaborative approaches borrowed from the open source software development community, this book illustrates how gatewatching provides an alternative to gatekeeping and other traditional journalistic models of reporting, and has enabled millions of users around the world to participate in the online news publishing process.

Editorial Review:

As more and more bloggers write about books and with some of their Web sites receiving thousands of hits a day, this is an easy-to-follow guide to the top, book-related blogs.

With the current craze for blogs, the phenomenon of book blogging is of interest from an objective standpoint as well as to those keen to read book reviews. How much influence do these bloggers have? Is there any kind of censorship or quality control? Are booksellers aware of them? Does Oprah Winfrey take note?

Many people develop a real fondness for book bloggers who write reviews for love and not money. Taking in small, quirky Web sites like Book Slut, dovegreyreader, Bluestalking Reader, and MoorishGirl as well as large, well-known sites like salon.com, this book will show readers how to investigate literature from distant lands, to find the sites of authors who are yet to be discovered by the mainstream, and to find the pages of book industry pundits who have opened their daily lives to a wider world. Welcome to the honest world of book blogs.

Catheryn Kilgarriff and Rebecca Gillieron are editors at Marion Boyars Publishers, and Meryl Zegarek is a book publicist of many years standing. All three have seen the book industry from the inside and are happy that blogs are now opening this world up to ordinary readers.

find the most popular blogs 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Some tens of thousands of new blogs are estimated to come online each day. So where should you start reading? One answer is offered by this quick guide. The authors are experienced bloggers who have surveyed a gamut of blog topics. From entertainment to hobbies to politics and beyond.

In any given area, the suggested blogs in the book are of course only a tiny sampling. Albeit these are usually the most frequented blogs. Take popular music. For news on it, only 4 blogs are given. But the authors readily concede that much more could be done. An entire book's worth on each topic. Still and hopefully, this book will suffice to get you oriented in the blogosphere.

Editorial Review:

In Zero Comments, internationally renowned media theorist and 'net critic' Geert Lovink upgrades worn out concepts about the Internet and interrogates the latest hype surrounding blogs and social network sites. In this third volume of his studies into critical Internet culture, following the influential Dark Fiber and My First Recession, Lovink develops a 'general theory of blogging.' Unlike most critiques of blogging, Lovink is not focusing here on the dynamics between bloggers and the mainstream news media, but rather unpacking the ways that blogs exhibit a 'nihilist impulse' to empty out established meaning structures. Blogs, Lovink argues, are bringing about the decay of traditional broadcast media, and they are driven by an in-crowd dynamic in which social ranking is a primary concern. The lowest rung of the new Internet hierarchy are those blogs and sites that receive no user feedback or 'zero comments'.

Lovink explores other important changes to Internet culture, as well, including the silent globalization of the Net in which the West is no longer the main influence behind new media culture, as countries like India, China and Brazil expand their influence. Zero Comments also looks forward to speculate on the Net impact of organized networks, free cooperation and distributed aesthetics.

This is yet another installment in this series. While I thought these books were moderately funny in the beginning - they are starting to feel boring to me.

The storyline is essentially the same with the girls trying to find their soulmates - while at the same time trying to matchmake everybody in their school.

The problem with this book is the corny dialogue. The whole opening chapter with them being interviewed was just so painful to read. The author seemed to be trying to be cute and funny and the result was that the characters simply sounded stupid. This is a theme that would repeat over and over throughout this book. I think its time to retire this series.

Editorial Review:

Best friends, Madison, Lina, and Holly created The Dating Game as way to get credit for their Interpersonal Human Dynamics course (a fancy name for Sex Ed). Now they've become sought-after online matchmakers for their whole school! The Dating Game has gotten too hot to handle--at least for the school's principal and parents. After Mads, Lina and Holly come off like junior sex experts on a local radio interview and their controversial new feature, Ex-rating--where exes rate their former boyfriend/girlfriend--brings in scandalous responses, the Dating Game is banned from the school's computers. But Mads, Lina, and Holly aren't giving up without a fight-even if it means being expelled!
